BIG WAVES CROSSING THE NORTH ATLANTIC | Putting our Production Sailboat to the Test - Ep 99

  • We continue our west to east Atlantic crossing. We depart from the Azores Portugal Islands and head for the United Kingdom/Europe sailing in the biggest waves and seas we've ever encountered in our monohull sailboat. The winds, waves and current make this offshore passage very demanding and aim us off our intended destination.

To quote Gordon Lightfoot🇨🇦, From his song The Edmund Fitzgerald.
"Does anyone know where the love of God goes , when the big waves turns minutes to hours"
Your outer casing of your job line is the strongest and protection facture.
Sailor of forty years and spent 4 years in my youth as a merchant marine. On a 120 tugboat pulling hundreds of thousands ton barges, from Vancouver BC to Alaska in the beginning of January. We were tied up for three days because if a massive storm. We had to leave because of the cost factor . We got out to open the ocean in the Pacific with 80 foot swells. Our tugboat from water to chimney stack was 65 feet, and we were getting buried when in the trough of the swell. We were worried that our stack was going to get swamped and stall our engines. We had 2 1,500 HP engines and could only make 3 knots. So I know the feeling.

The thing about manifesting you dreams to reality is that YOU are the X factor. You are the only true obstacle to making your own dreams happen. Life happens fast and you either hop on the ride and hold on or you sit on the sidelines and watch others living the life you want to live.
This year my wife and I made our first move from the sidelines to a player in the game with a small 17' Vagabond pocket cruiser for us to learn on, on Lake Champlain. It's been an AMAZING summer on the water and I can't recommend to anyone reading this enough. Do it. Buy that boat that tickles your fancy, fix her up and get out there. Just get out. Trust me. You will not regret it. To team Jibsea. THANK YOU from SV Morning Star for showing us the way here in Vermont!

I mean when in the trough and ago you can see in the sky and the horizon disappears, you know the waves are at least 10-15 feet. Have been there and you two handled it like real pros.

It is amazing how a camera does not seems to capture the true size of the waves. Many, many years ago sailed south across Biscay in my 26 foot Contessa. No freeboard, and the waves were towering above me. This is when a camera was a camera and you did not see the results until long after the pictures were taken. I described every detai of my heroic voyage with, wait until you see the pictures. They looked like a gentle day out on the English Channel. Loved your video and Bon Voyage.🙃that was a big wave.

well done guys, thanks for actually being descriptive and including us with the ride rather than 2 seconds of travel and then all about the destination. Much more balanced approach including the debates about your success rates at catching fish, and remembering that you need to drive on the correct side of the lights now that your not in north america lol (Green starbord right)
Its just a shame that the cameras never record the true feeling and look of the ocean, or we could experience some of the seasickness as well! Having done a bit of offshore racing and cruising I can assure everyone that those waves and seas were way bigger and rougher than it looked by a long way!

Wow, great crossing, after you have finished with Ireland you should come up the Bristol Channel, you can then stop off in Swansea, Cardiff and then come up the river Avon into Bristol under the Clifton Suspension Bridge.....

Steph, you seemed to handle the waves and conditions well, especially since Travis was saying he was terrified, I figured he would purposely sail the boat into the waves 🌊 😂 being the adrenaline junkie he appears to be. ;) 😬🤷‍♀️. Safe travels

Congrats to you both!! Well sailed, those damned furlers are great until they're not. Think about a hanked on staysail with a downhaul on that lonely inner forestay. Easy to rig and control in most conditions. Enjoy yourselves by taking the time to immerse in the culture and maybe the Guiness! Jeff and Julie s/v Oo La La Westsail 32 #81

Maybe if we were at anchor , while sailing big seas I think we feel more comfortable in a mono! 😆
