THE "FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE" LIVE PERFORMANCE
In my opinion Paul generally sang songs humbly and with great joy and careful excellence, extending to the hearer a pure and genuine love and happiness... He truly loved singing and performing, and he was free in that element, he didn't feel the need to force it. However I believe that beautiful humility was no match for this song on this night. Paul as always is still beautifully humble here, but the song and performance is not. In this performance the song is bold and piercing. It seems as if everything within him is onstage on this night, and the listener cannot help but to feel it... Paul's Passion for Love truly shined through here, and even if only for a few moments, we're truly blessed to be able to catch a glimpse of such a magnificent Love...

I saw the Temptations perform @ 1962, at the Uptown Theater, in Philly. 20 years later, I sold the house Paul Williams was renting. We got to hang, and he was one terrific guy. He was about to buy his first home, ever. He gave me an autographed poster. Pretty sure I gave it to one of my sons....but it may be in a closet I seldom open. He was a genuinely nice guy.
1962 sophomore year at West Philadelphia High School-then graduated 1964 to USAF Security Police-Nam 69-70.
My father was the stylist that did all the hair. He worked at Don's Doo Shop

It makes me so mad that Paul never gets the credit he deserves! All people talk about is David and Eddie! But what about Paul?! He was so over looked.. He could sing so beautiful but never got the songs he should have.. RIP to all the temptations.
He was not over-looked in that era, maybe people of today may not know him as well as David and Eddie and maybe he didn't have as big of an impact on people today but in that era Paul was just as popular,actually all the Temptations were popular But song writers tailor there songs to a voice, you can see that even after David Left Dennis Edwards became the voice although Paul had a lot of hits on their albums like For once in my life, and Hey Girl, to name a few.but he lead on a lot of songs.
He sure did. He was my favorite. He was the choreographer for a long time before they got a professional one. His "Don't look back" , f"or once in my life", all of them, my man Paul Williams. His son looking Just like him. Paul Jr not as strong but you could pretend that he was Paul Sr.

I wasn't born until 1965, but Motown has always played an important role in my musical life. Paul Williams was also my favorite Tempt. He was such a joy to watch!!

Paul's voice was magic. Only one Temp left. I saw them in '65 in Detroit. Visited David Ruffins grave. They are missed... motown treasures...always!😥
Saw the Temptations original classic line up in Georgia, Fall 1969 with David, Eddie, Otis, Melvin, Paul Williams my favorite, he was like a magnet on stage and unforgettable, they were in concert as the headliner, along with other Motown acts (Mary Wells, Marvaletts, Drifters, Four Tops…) they all gave exceptional performances. Years later 1984 met Eddie Kendricks as a solo artist in a new area nightclub promoting his music, he was sitting alone when I ask for his autograph ✍🏽 on a napkin addressed to me, very friendly too and I still have it 38 years later. R.I.P. Kings.👑
Both Paul and the Temptations never let anything stop them and as a result, they left us one of the greatest legacies in pop music and performance.
He was a sensitive person, you can just tell. Sensitive people feel things very deeply. We need those people. We should treasure them. Thank you for posting this. He was a wonderful singer, and obviously very loved.

Shud have more songs, which his strong nd sexy bariton deserved.. Once in my life was so emotional performance.. we can c, he is suffering inside not only cos of his sickness, but something inside him was killing him.. thats y he started to drink..RIP Paul..

Thank you for THIS portrayal of Paul Williams. The movie made him a drunk and that was NOT the case Paul suffered with sickle cell disease, the movie did not show Paul nor sickle cell in its proper light. In a minute the scene where the Dr says Paul may never sing with the group again the writers could have written in he has sickle cell anemia.

Although I love the movie, I feel it's not right that they left out the fact that he suffered with Sickle Cell.
Paul Williams was absolutely incredible and I love how this video shows just how amazing he truly was.
The writers for the movie were jerks and did a great disservice to this wonderful man/singer. The only reason he drank was because of the pain caused by sickle cell--a really treacherous disease.Miss you Paul!

Most likely the Dr.'s did not know alot about SCAD. I never heard of it until TLC and that was not revealed til yrs later.

It was known back then but there were no real treatments for it back then. They only had blood transfusion and oxygen mask. It was known that he had sickle cell anemia but they felt it was just easier to make him out as a one dimensional drunk in the movie. Even as a child I didn't understand how drinking would ruin his body and stamina alone. It made it look like Paul had no will power when in fact his body broke down from sickle cell and he was masking the pain with drugs and alcohol; and slowly fell into depression as sickle cell claimed his body along with a spot on his liver. If they would of put that in the movie, it would of gave more depth and understanding cause for years I always felt there's gotta be a bigger reason why he couldn't get it together. Paul didn't even drink before the strain of touring caused his sickle pain to increase and become unbearable. That's how he started drinking for real for real!

Leandro Santos Don't Look Back (one of my favorites and Oh Mother of Mine; I also love Paul's rendition of "For Once in My Life." He sings with such heartfelt emotion in this song. Each time I listen to it, I get the sense that he was really crying out for help, love from someone...

Paul Williams was an overlooked but indeed a key ingredient of the Temptations; not only did the vocals come straight from his heart, but he had the musical chops that brought it all together; "Don't Look Back" & "I Want a Love I Can See" are two of my favorite songs from The Tempts. Truthfully though, every member of the group had a unique vocal stamp & style that is forever embedded into that wonderful music. Otis Williams was an incredible crooner with a voice that was smooth as silk; Melvin's bass notes were truly a gift from God; David was an incredible performer and when prime time came knocking on Motown's door, his incredible talent played a big part in introducing that phenomenal brand of music to the world. Eddie Kendricks?? Hey, what can you say about that man? There is no Temptations without him; the essence of cool who would be emulated, but never duplicated. Dennis Edwards walked into a tough situation and incredibly managed to revive (only my opinion) that iconic group, while at the same time leaving his own indelible mark on The Temptin Temptations! Truly one of America's sacred musical treasures!
Paul Williams was not over-looked he was the Lead Singer along with Eddie Kendricks all those songs he sang on were hits, Smokey Robinson wrote My Girl for David Ruffin and it was there biggest hit ever at that time and all the songs after that were just as big with David Ruffin out Front the rest is history.

He was not overlooked. Ppl in that era recognized all of them. Early recordings (1961-64) Paul sang lead on many of their songs. If you have all their albums/cd's you'll see the flow fm Paul to Eddie to David to David/Eddie to Dennis into Damon/Richard as varios leads over 15 yr petiod.
He also shared leads on Cloud Nine which was/is another big hit.
I want a love I can see was and still is my favorite sung by Paul.

I loved "Don't Look Back." He was an amazing singer/performer.

I am only 27 years old, but my father, who is 74, introduced the Temptations to me and my brothers. He always told us about how great of a group they were, but it wasn't until I started researching their performances and music that I gained a HUGE bit of respect for these men! They set the standard for all R&B male groups for all eternity. Paul's death must've been super tragic. May he, David, Eddie and Blue rest in peace.

And Eddie introduce Paul the place went wild. Girls were fainting. That was the last time seeing Paul perform. I am glad I have such great memories.🌟
I love this tribute to the man with a voice that helped make 'The Temptations' and their sound a house whole name through out American and the world. The puzzle would not have been complete without him. No one has stood in his shoes as a baritone sense the day he left.

Paul for some reason was my favorite temptations, he just look like a caring person and his dancing stood out to me, remember I'm 8,9,10 years old I'm 61 now. My mom died in 1970 her favorite temptation was Eddie Kendricks, there's a connection here Paul & Eddie was the best of friends coming up together !

This was a great tribute to Mr Paul Williams. He is my favorite Temptation and favorite singer period. He had the total package. The voice of every emotion, the moves that were smoother than silk, the personality that make you fall in love, and he was handsome as all get out. His smile was a heavenly light, but on the opposite end, his eyes could also show you his pain. He was a sensitive, beautiful soul that deserved more. He had more to give. There are rare times in music when a performer bares their whole being, holds nothing back, has nothing more to give. This was such a performance we saw from Paul doing For Once In My Life. I count myself lucky to have been privileged to see and hear this magnificent performance
