- Here is another drum composition I recently created. I named it “ Minotaur”. This solo has been composed around a drum pattern I particularly love, the alternate single stroke roll “between the hands and the feet”.
I’ve never used it with Gojira, but this effect can be spectacular.

He stands out as one of the best drummers ever because he expresses musical ideas. He uses dynamics, groove/feel, and theme development. His skill and technique are both mindboggling, but the way he uses ideas in a truly musical way sets him apart. It also allows Gojira to be able to put sections together in unique ways and create intensely meaningful music.

I love how Mario almost always starts with a nice and simple groove and then develops it to become more complex. I always start too explosive and burn out with my creativity early in. I should start doing this kinda style more. Mario will always be one of the greatest drummers and trailblazers in history

Thomas has skill, no doubt about it.... but Mario has what musicians of any instrument call 'musicality '. Anyone can spend years honing an art form with speed, and independence, but it takes something much deeper to make music. Mario makes music, and with the band even more so...

The alternating right hand right foot, left hand left foot pattern starting at .32 are insane. I tried getting those down but gave up, damn Mario is a straight up animal behind the kit. Keep the vids coming Mario!

DOUBLE PARADIDDLLLLLLLLLE!!!!! Madly musical solo. My favorite ostinato in there... the LRR (hat bass bass)... and the single stroke roll alternating between hands and feet is always a pleasure to hear. All played with Mario's signature power and brutality... freakin' awesome.

George Kollias plays with his eyes closed too. Something tells me that very little of this extremely complex drumming relies on eyesight. Just gotta set the toms and cymbals in the right place.

Yeah. But its alternating like Right hand - right foot - left hand - left foot. Kinda like odd blastbeat on toms
it is actually not that hard, but to be honest, you would have to practice and learn hundreds of hours of simple rudiments before you would be able to do this beat. And yes, the beat mentioned here is a simple one, because he uses all 4 limbs in a linear rotation. like Herny Valkonen described it. just look at one limb, it is not that fast. so for the speed it is very doable, but the trick lies within the timing. if he would play this fill with variation in timing of lets say +/-2 or 3 milliseconds for each limb, then this fill would never ever work or sound good. the next trick is, that he uses 2 floor toms and 2 basedrum pedals within this fill. they all sound kind of equal (not really but almost). with that you can do insanely fast sounding fills, because every limbs job is a quarter of the tempo.
Wtf, that is the easiest and most linear part of the entire solo. It's the only part of the solo that doesn't require "inhuman limb independence" because it's completely linear.

Mario is unique. After hours of watching him and decades of watching all kinds of drummers, I think he's a player who doesn't necessarily think first of the 'sonic result' he's trying to achieve; I think he envisions a way of moving his body first and foremost. It's as if he's choreographing his arms and legs like a dancer, and thereafter decides what drums or cymbals to play, and how. Although rhythmic sound is the result, these great solos are more like snippets of ballet movement -- or Tae Kwon Do. It's like a body-first or motion-centric approach to drumming. He's dancing at the kit, and also found what great rhythms could be wielded in that choreography.

@@georgeak3864 Yeah, there must be seen cameramEn all around the kit as well. But you never see one, although camera angles change all the time. So, basically it's prerecorded audio + some video takes edited together. Not offended by this, though, and you shouldn't be too. It's just cinematography!
I definitely feel like this was dubbed. the recording had a stereo field and the kick was detailed enough to most definitely have a kick in/out mic, maybe even a kick sub. Unless they are really good at hiding mics and wires with camera techniques... Or we have some tech i dont know about
