Holy shit, the dude is so good, he can’t even portray sloppy feet.
No, just this his tolerances for sloppy are several thousand times more precise than the rest of us, probably.
Although I hate the "lol" thing - I actually did laugh when I read this because I was thinking the same thing when I heard him do that - I thought "that's sloppy?, then I suck ass for sure".
@@charlesrocks The bar in drumming isn't "Travis Smith is the only person who does not have sloppy feet" so, not sure why you're trying to make it sound like he's saying that, unless you're some fan who just wants to get a high five and a "No Way, I wasn't saying that - NO ONE is as good as him, Dude, right? He's so awesome!!!!'.
His timing is purposely off in that clip, rewatch it and listen closely if you have to... But him trying to put down other drummers when he literally is as bad as the people he is portraying. It isn't right. Even when he tries to show off fills, it's literally the same fill for 5 minutes. Fuck this guy.

“Loosen Up Buddy” takes me back to when I first started playing a kit. Started on a practice pad (as many do), but for some reason I just couldn’t loosen up my wrists on the kit 😂 made my entire body ache. Also, I think “Stick Breaker” should be on this list. I have broken many sticks while playing! Twice in front of people. First time, the guitarist (these were both Church settings so it wasn’t too intense I just got too excited) pointed to me and I saw the tip was gone so mid song I flipped it and kept playing. Second time, hit the Ride so damn hard that the tip hit me in the eye. Bassist laughed his butt off for the rest of the song. The congregation had no idea why I was playing with one eye closed 😂 sorry for the long comment
The tip in the eye reminded me, I used to smoke cigarettes and once while playing I caught the cherry with a stick and put the smoke out in my eye. Stopped for smoke breaks after that 😂
Lol it's me right now, 1 month in. I'm always tense though. Drums are helping me loosen up.

I only play Portnoy fills whenever I'm playing metal, but I feel obligated to point out that Portnoy fills are far more varied and interesting than RLRLKK which is all that was shown in the video.
I'm the "I never do fills" guy. I pretty much can only play the intro fill to Chop Suey. The only fill I know. Other than a triplet fill.

let's be real, we've all had the "I only play Portnoy fills" fail at least a million times in our careers
I remember buying the "Liquid drum theater dvd".... every song my band wrote for 3 months was death by portnoy fills...

Probably, he does heel toe technique for really fast stuff and he prolly had the triggers set up to be max velocity for the sake of the bit. Samus is insanely good

Domonics Dániel thankfully I don't know any drummers who play like that but it sounds like you just want someone with fast feet. you could look up George Kolias, Mike Portnoy or Zbigniew "Inferno" Promiński

So today I talked to Mike at Drumnetics. My order is in for the standard double. How cool to be the first on my block, awesome.. We talked for a bit , I congratulated him for his creations. Mike seems like a great guy and I for one am glad it was someone like him who's been involved with music and giving lessons throughout his life. Now he will get in return.

Tbh, in my guitar experience, it was harder to convincingly play badly on purpose than to actually progress at a normal speed. Like once you know how to play something well and at speed and have been playing it that way for a long time, it becomes that much harder to deconstruct

The Tapper actually works pretty well for Black Metal. If it's grindcore or noisecore I want the drummer going nuts on those blasts, but for BM I want it to sorta fade back and be atmospheric.
I am guilty of speeding up the tempo during fills among other things, but Ive only played for a year and a bit. Thanks for the heads up, Im constantly trying to figure out what I suck at and then improve it.

Mate we met once, about 15 yrs ago at an Abigail Williams concert in Wolverhampton, England. You left them shortly after that, but it's clearly done you no harm. You're an absolutely phenomenol drummer - the "Common Fails" videos show you can adopt many styles, and that is a rare talent. Plus you have a sense of humour. 5 stars for being epic.

I Love how you pulled off NOT playing to the click track while demonstrating how some CAN'T play to a click track. Did you actually have that playing in the room when you taped that, or is the click overdubbed. I've never tried it, but I'm pretty sure I'd have to concentrate harder playing off tempo of the click.
Hate to admit it but "beats that don't make sense" definitely reminded me of Lars as well. XD Still love the guy though.
