    Mate, I take my hat off to you. This is the best car channel I have come across. You take the complexity of modern tyres and very eloquently describe how intricate the details and differences are between them. Bloody love it. Keep them coming.
    I’d also be interested to see a test where you take front wheel drive hot hatches (high torque) and show how the handling can be transformed with the right set of tyres. I remember how sensitive the Mk1 Focus RS was. The original Michelin PS1’s it arrived with from the factory meant the car received very mixed reviews regarding the differential and tendency to torque steer. Replacing them with the newly launched at the time PS2’s was a revelation. Front end wet and dry grip/feel was sensational. Lift off oversteer was also so well telegraphed after the swap. I think in Britain we put tyres last when it come to our cars and a channel like this will hopefully be educational and ultimately save lives.

    I appreciate that you put a decent distance on the tyres before talking about them. Too many forum based reviews are based on the comparison with flogged tyres or a confirmation bias on their specific choice. Nice review! I'd recently came home from a vacation at the Nürburgring. Before I drove to the ring, I mounted the sportcontact 6 on my car (e46 M3). I was beyond impressed by these tyres, -so much grip! I came from less grip (Kumho ecsta) so it was a huge improvement! The only problem I would say is that they did get overheated after 1,5 lap on the nordschleife (especially the fronts). I tried different tyre pressure to sort it out, but the air and track temperature was too hot I think. (~30'C air and ~42'C ground).
    Anyways, -I'm super happy with the Continentals!

    Great to see such a comprehensive review. Interestingly I found the PSS awful on my E92 M3. Standard sizes but felt like the sidewalls were really soft. Higher grip limits than the OE PS2, but much less feedback. It even flickered the TC light on undulating motorway slip roads in the dry, as you could feel the tyres moving side to side at the rear, but without actually sliding. Very odd sensation.
    I spoke several times with Michelin UK who were great about it. Made a few suggestions (pressures, alignment & camber etc) but ultimately I wasn't happy. They offered to collect the tyres and replace with OE tyres again.
    Now running Cup2's and they are fantastic

    • @tyrereviews
      @tyrereviews  7 років тому +5

      Sadly every iteration of performance tyre is getting softer to fall in line with the EU noise and rolling resistance label scoring (see latest video on PSS vs PS4S). We've yet to try the Cup 2's directly with the PSS / PS4S, but it's something we're working on :)

    I've driven both the conti 6p and Mpss on s205 c63 and the conti 6p wet and dry grip is outstanding. it is a step up for sure.
    All that said, ive done 10k+ of hard miles on the c63 with MPSS with a lot of tyre abuse and the rear wheels have loads of tread left. ultimately that's what matters to me .
    I used to have conti 5p on a AWD performance car previously and just after 6.5k miles the tread was down to around 4.5mm .
    my e46 m3 wears MP4s and with the complete lack of torque on this car, I can see these tyres lasting me 15 to 20k miles even though I drive with plenty of spirit

    Awesome review, this is perfect how you get in the details, very helpful thank you. I am in the train on my way to purchasing a bmw M3 e92 which has the stock 19’ m220 rims. I’m looking to replace them with a set of Avant-garde m359, a good copy of the original bmw competition package on this M3 (the ones you have I believe).
    I’m wondering about tire size, I want to have a good fit, I don’t like stretched tires but also I want no rubbing. On the avant-garde The rim in the back is 10’ and the front is 9’, just like on the originals. Would you say going for 275 back and 255 front is the good decision ? Do you have any spacers on your car in this video or is it stock ? Do you happen to have rubbing, even slightly, on aggressive driving style ?
    Thanks in advance, keep it up !

      Great car / wheel choice :)
      I have a spacer rear (10mm), nothing front. With the 255/275 combo, the fronts rub a little on lock, and the rears can rub under extreme bump. I much prefer the car with the oe 245/265 sizes (which I've now moved back to), even if it doesn't look as cool. Worth noting my car is also lowered a little.
      Enjoy the new car :)

    •  6 років тому

      Tyre Reviews thank you for the reply. Why do you prefer the original size tires ? Because of the rubbing maybe ? Or do you feel less power with the bigger tyre size ?
      Is there not too much stretch with the 245/265 on these 9 and 10 inch rims ?

    Having driven on various tires from both brands and what I would consider two (2) of the highest quality rated on the market incl. the model & trim lines tested I for the most part concur with the narrator/driver comments. In my opinion Michelin has more lateral grip and much better braking response. The racetracks iI am referring to are "road course" tracks as in TCR and SCCA GT circuts. The road courses are the closest to everyday road condions are crical factors as ir relates to cornering and braking. I tend to be "Miichelin" biased on that experience. Morever while Continental makes a very good, high quality tire if/when it comes to my family I will choose Michelin as the OE replacement whenever possible. Bred on exp.with family history of Mortsports driving, many in countries with various driving factors to consider including type of vehicle, altitude, hourly climate changes, and road conditions incl. omitted aggregate/pavement. Bottom line is IF $ are not a key factor you would want them to wear the best shoes for safety/heath, conditions and aesthetics. Now × 40 since since their in a vehicle traveling a much higher rate of speed. You would buy them best there is affordable within your budget of course. And that would be Michelin by a large margin. Check the stats, they lay out the facts, the most important being safety history

    I've just ordered 285/30x20 SportContact6 rear tyres for my M4CP (destroyed the standard MPSS in 5k miles between November and March in mainly cold and wet conditions!) and I'm wondering whether to cancel the order and just go for the MPSS again? I normally hate mis-matched tyres front to rear but from what you are saying, steering feel will be better with the MPSS (and front end grip is fantastic with very little understeer) and traction will be better with the Conti so it could be win-win as the traction with the MPSS was really poor. Whats your thoughts? Thanks

    How does the Continental Maxcontact 6 perform? I am looking for some new tyres for my 2013 Audi S4. I drive the car year round and I live at 300m altitude in the mountains of the south island of New Zealand so in the winter we sometimes get sub-zero temps in the mornings. We don't often get snow in town so that isn't a concern. The MC6's are a about 20% cheaper than the Pilot Sport 4 and the tyre shop recommended them saying that he uses the same tyres on his Ford Falcon and found them to be a very good balance of performance, comfort and longevity. I just ride the Continental SportContact 6, and well ....
    Comfort level and rolling noise is day and night compared to my old Bridge Turanza ER300 in Runflat.
    At the management level it's super soft and light. I feel like driving a different car, a lighter car especially on the front end.
    Level of handling nothing to see too. It feels like you can place the front of the car where you want to centimeter.
    Placebo effect or not, when starting strong the car leaves much faster, the power is "better transmitted to the road"

    Abnormal physical wear! hi; i bought for my audi a8 255/40/19 continental sportcontact 6 in 25.06.2016. Normal driving, quttro, one time on high way, driving out of the city 120km/h medium speed. After ~8000km from 7mm deep of the profile (factory measured) now i have 5.3mm. School eraser rubber!

    • @JohnSmith-dg9sy
      @JohnSmith-dg9sy 6 років тому +2

      Judging by that wear you'd get roughly 24000km which is amazing for a high performance tyre on a heavy car with lots of power. I'm lucky to get 12000k out of a set, regardless of brand.

    I'm curious, how do you test the tyres for wear, exactly?

    • @tyrereviews
      @tyrereviews  6 років тому +1

      Proper wear tests are extremely difficult to do, as you need identical cars and professional drivers to drive the tyres for at least 10,000km, then you can extrapolate life, this is why so few magazines do wear tests.
      Alternatively you can look at user tread life on sites such as Tyre Reviews

    • @sanscipher
      @sanscipher 6 років тому

      Thanks. I thought there might be a machine that simulates that or measures the rubber hardness somehow.

    • @tyrereviews
      @tyrereviews  6 років тому +2

      You can measure the sure hardness of the rubber but it tells you very little about the wear or grip of the tyre. There are machines that can run "moving road" wear tests, but they still don't recreate real world conditions such as wet driving, temperature changes, different road surfaces. This is why real world wear testing is the best way.

  • @zackdamion9286

    From my experience, Contisport are much better overall tires, but if you drive on road which has rim bending potholes, the sidewalls are easiest to get bulging. I take the Michelin which has better construct sidewalls due to this one reason. But this is for me, I'm sure other drivers have the benefit of better quality roads than my country.
