  • The Stalingrad Grain Elevator first fell to the Germans, then was retaken by the Soviets, who were described as 'devils' by one of the German soldiers fighting for the 94th Infantry Division. Meanwhile, the battle for Mamaev Kurgan continues, as does the fight for the centre of the city. Finally, as Paulus removes Wietersheim, Zhukov and Eremenko prepare for the 2nd Kotluban Offensive - the third attack in the area. Will it succeed?

    ABOUT TIK 📝
History isn’t as boring as some people think, and my goal is to get people talking about it. I also want to dispel the myths and distortions that ruin our perception of the past by asking a simple question - “But is this really the case?”. I have a 2:1 Degree in History and a passion for early 20th Century conflicts (mainly WW2). I’m therefore approaching this like I would an academic essay. Lots of sources, quotes, references and so on. Only the truth will do.
This video is discussing events or concepts that are academic, educational and historical in nature. This video is for informational purposes and was created so we may better understand the past and learn from the mistakes others have made.

Man, that description of the guy making his first kills at the beginning really got to me.
It's stories like these that remind you that all these unspeakable horrors and atrocities are happening to regular, normal folk who probably just wanted to live happy, productive lives with their families.

What got me was running out of 20mm cannon shells for the flak guns, which had been routinely expended in anti-personnel roles. Ever seen what a 20mm cannon shell can do to a person? I haven't either but it is grim to imagine the suffering of the targets.

@Tracchofyre Exactly! The documentary made by one man (sometimes with some assets made by others) which is better than the ones made by whole studios.
I highly doubt that they would be willing to by though, since general audience usually prefer simplified and short version of events.
However, it is really great to see, that this trend is turning and there are more people who wants something better.

What is so good... I have read the 2 books mainly used (Glantz and Mark - actually 2 by Mark) and while Jason Mark is an easy, enjoyable read... Glantz is just HARD. He's lightyears better than his first books but still they are very dry. TIK did extensive research to put these sources together. EXTENSIVE.

Rodimtsev also a great selection. Honestly its hard to imagine fighting over a hill and changing multiple times. We could use more video games that focus on stuff like what Checkhov and Rosimstev had to go through, and less on one man armies that mow down everything in front of them.

Fightings for the Mamaev Kurgan reminded me one old russian song written by Vladimir
    Vysotsky :
They clung to the height, as one clings to his kin.
    And mortars were constantly shelling.
Together we all rushed to summit this hill,
As one storms buffets and train stations.

Our shouts of Hooray soon were freezing on lips
When there was a bullet to swallow.
We made to the top seven times, seven trips.
    But seven retreats also followed.

Another attack is not welcomed by troops,
The earth now reminds of burnt porridge.
The eighth time we’ll take it for certain, for good.
Take back what is ours and not foreign!

Or maybe we should walk around this damn hill?
    What caused this unhealthy attachment?!
It looks like this height is now destined to be
The crossroads of paths we imagined.

Many Russians chose to go to his memorial instead of watch the events and because of that there were many empty seats at the time. Your constant harping on the supply issue for the Germans reminded me of why the Japanese did not sail that huge battle fleet to the Hawaiian islands and blast the base to scrap with their cannons. They too were at the end of a long tenuous supply line. They simply did not have enough resources to go that far and get back. Most history books and all video games leave out supply chains. But it seems that supply is the most vital of all considerations. Just ask Napoleon at Moscow what happens when one ignores supply. Thank you TIK for this most thorough history lesson!

Things I did notice of amusement and attention, was A, "Communist Street", at about 8:01 in the video. (The house set on fire cause of a sign was amusing as well.) B, The fighting for the Grain Elevator. Having played "Red Orchestra 2" a fair bit, I know how brutal the map is. And the way to win is not with massed Infantry charges. But infiltration teams of 3-5 guys with SMGs, sneaking around fire points and clearing each area, with automatic fire & grenades. And C to cut this short, Dragan's 1st Company holding the nail factory rather than the train station. I find it more ironic that they held a nail factor, "hard as nails" springs to my mind, than just some bombed out or burned out train station.
I found other points in the video interesting. Like the background politics of things as well as the statistics data of relative strength forces and so on. But didn't want to waste your time. Still fought this was damned good. And looking forward to more of your work. 👍🍻😊

Another great video. Thanks for the excelent work!
According to german records (see for example at Anton Jolys Battle Atlas, also in the Erinnerungsbuch der 94. Infanterie Division) there is no evidence or indication, that the 94th ID captured the elevator at the 16th of september. The records says that on this day a first connection was established with the 24th PD in the vicinity of the train station nr. 2 and futher progress were failed. The very interesting source of Willy Hoffman says the same. Yes there is a contradiction to the soviet source of the 10th rifle brigade. I think the attack and recapture of the grain elevator by Polyakov was two days earlier, in the night from 15th to 16th of september. But I think the contradictions will stay in this case forever.

    • @TheImperatorKnight
      @TheImperatorKnight  3 роки тому +3

Possibly. The problem is that the diary entries aren't always accurate either, and I've come across quite a few bits where the diaries are simply wrong just by looking at the map. Luckily this isn't a game changer even if the occupation of the elevator happened a day earlier, or not at all. It comes down to interpretation of the contradictions in the sources (and there's certainly many!)

I do understand that the production takes a lot of your time already, but that would clear up a lot of things, at least when the information on units' current strength is available.

Sometimes the shock of being hit will break someone out of being frozen (after all what sensible person runs into a firefight). The phrase 'a kick in the pants' (ass) comes to mind. or 'had to kick their butt to get them moving'. In the case of Patton, the soldiers being in a hospital and his not knowing that the soldiers in question had medical problems made his actions inappropriate (he should have checked and not assumed), if he had encountered them on a battlefield and done the same thing to focus them on their duty no one would have said a thing.

They had the right forces to do this but instead trying bullying the Soviets out. Encircle, bring up your infantry. Mechanised forces are great to put a steel ring around a city preventing reinforcements and resupply.
At Kiev, Kharkov and other major urban fights they did it right bagging huge numbers of POWs.
