My first wife and I had seen them on MTV (The Walls Came Down) and she heard they were coming to town and asked if I wanted to go see them. It was a tiny little ex-porn theater in San Antonio that Stone City Attractions had turned into a small venue. It was the most incredible show I have ever seen. They did this song for the first time in public that night (Michael said he had written it on the bus earlier in that tour) and the emotion was SO raw... awesome. RIP, Michael.
The "Call" actually saved me. Brutalised in South Africa, this song (amongst others) gave us Hope. We're still Here! Michael Been, we thank God for you.
PresidentGas1 WHAT? How could they have produced songs with any more hook? The Call have had tons more great songs than a lot of bands that did make it. Maybe they were snake-bit; it’s happened to other musicians who should’ve ‘made it’ according to Everyone who ever heard those musicians....it’s also called bad luck. It happens to non-musicians too.
Your so right... even though I was into them during their heyday. I still love listening to them to this day. Hey did the singer/bassist die? How & when?
I've always loved this great band. I saw them by myself around 1986 bc none of my friends knew them or cared enough. They were so good. I met them afterward, was invited back to their trailer near the small-ish venue where Michael Been kissed me. (I might be the mother of his son, Robert Levon Been.) Anyway, I chickened out on going inside w them bc I was alone, but I got their drumsticks and something autographed, both of which I've lost in the shuffle of numerous move sine then. I still play their CDs in my car, my kids grew up listening to them w me : )
I bet he still believes and now he really does know ! God gave him such great talent and his music/lyrics will outlive us all ! Thank you for your musical gifts here on earth. True positive insperation in an insane world. God Bless you, Micheal
Gutted to hear of Michael's passing tonight.. Deepest sympathies & thoughts with Rob & the family and the B.R.M.C. crew.. What a great guy! Can't believe it..
They opened for Simple Minds at the James L Knight Center in Miami, FL back in '87. What an amazing time. One of the best concerts, for me, til this day. Gone way too soon.
The call will always be one the bands that inspired musicians as well as music writers and people who enjoy great music, cause people like us we still believe. Thanks youtube.
Just discovering this band, right here, right now (after being a long time fan of Tim Capello’s cover that I also just learned was a thing). I have tears in my eyes. That performance. That voice. Chills.
One of the BEST songs of all time by one of the best bands of all time! Michael Been and the guys (Tom, Scott, & Jim) should have truly been America's U2, but crappy label support & horrible marketing caused them to miss the mark. The power and passion of this song is incredible. When I got down and my faith was waivering, I could (and still often do) play this song to feel energized and uplifted. Thanks Michael for including your faith in your great rock music! See you at The Resurrection!
I was in a local band in the Philly area called Hidden Faces. One of my best memories was opening for The Call at the 23 East Cabaret in Ardmore on November 2, 1990
The Call was the most significant band I've ever found. They made me feel, and seek which allowed me to find. The still inspire me. Sad for our loss, glad I found them 25 years ago, glad I've had Micheal to inspire me for so long. Happy for him to Let his new Day Begin.
Very sorry to hear of Michael Been's passing. I am grateful that he and The Call gave us the gift of "Reconciled." I heard The Call at The Palace in Hollywood in 1986. I was standing in the front row of the audience of about 1,400 very appreciative fans as the band played all the songs from "Reconciled." It was absolutely fantastic. Every song brought huge applause, and each time Michael replied, "Thank you very much. We appreciate it." Very gracious. What talent and soul! I still believe!
I went to Karachi about the time this song came out. Our ship tied up to the pier, and within a few hours we were told an angry mob was headed our way. We immediately left.
@@roberttippett3733 I am sorry Robert that you had a bad experience in my country. It must be scary without a doubt. It use to be a very nice and a tolerant city many years ago. I have left the country myself due to a long list of problems which have plagued Karachi especially. Though I think it gets better. Keep safe and stay blessed - Best wishes
Me too, though I've always liked this song, I never knew who performed it. Now I have options. Waco was a huge clusterfuck - fascinating miniseries on Netflix.
twicebitten thasme what are you talking about? The call originally performed this song in 1986 BEFORE lost boys in 1987 AND the song was written by michael Been the lead singer that greasy shirtless girating sax player is blasphemy to this song
I'm surprised that more bands and singers haven't covered this song. There's so much soul in it that I can only see singers being magnetized to it. On the other hand, Michael Been's performance would be a tough act to follow. This is a person bringing his song to fruition, and his heart truly shows.
This song kept me... maybe sane, maybe just alive? I can't even finish the line, but i wish i had thanked Michael for this song. I don't know, maybe it's not too late. From a fellow Oklahoman, thank you so incredibly much.
It's a shame these guys weren't more successful. Timeless songs led by the intensity of Michael Been--maybe the best frontman along with Michael Hutchence and Bono. Incredible energy in live shows.
I saw them at a little club in Ft. Lauderdale, FL., in 1986. I was 20. Michael Bean’s bass playing was epic. (May he Rest In Peace). That same night, friends who went to the show, ran into the band at a Denny’s. Said they were the nicest guys.
Look at all of Micheal Been's /The Call's work, and all their lyrics, even their name, The Call ( The Calling ), and in that context, you can see that this song is about his maintenance of faith through adversity. I think Micheal Been's genius was that he didn't bang his ideology over people's heads, it was reasonably subtle and beautifully supported. What a talent and a voice he was.
George Stein: His son has kept his father's spirit alive, and built upon his legacy, in his own band, the trio Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (playing bass like his father) -- they do a killer cover of The Call's "Let The Day Begin"
USAF Sgt. Ron Alvarez would finish his morning AFN radio morning show in Okinawa with this. I loved listening to it. Thanks Ron and sorry for not picking a Call song to be played when I won the joke of the day.
I hear this song every day - it's AMAZING, These lyrics... they're just so real. Well written well performed, just a great song. Still gives me chils too!
I play music for 30 years, I listen to almost every kind of music and this song is one of the most powerful one ever written. The chorus is absolutely musically genius, pure genius the way it’s mixing major and minor in the same riff is Beethoven and wagner levels, it’s a pop song just a few minutes linking classical masterpiece and all the pop music since the 50s. How the hell did he came with that riff, it’s the perfect perfection of the best mixed feelings giving an almost impossible brand new most powerful one… I still believe, but i can’t believe this is so underrated for such a real masterpiece.
this song has helped me get through so many hard times... saw the Call in a tiny basement venue at Syracuse University in 1987 - we slam danced to "Walls Came Down," cheered for "Everywhere I Go," and stood in stunned silence and cried as Michael Been pounded out "I Don't Wanna" for an encore one of the great underrated bands of the 80's

Absolutely! This was a great band, and they never got their due. The first time I heard them was when they opened for "Simple Minds" in L.A. in 1986. A few months later I saw them at "The Palace" in Hollywood. Fantastic show, perfect venue--about a 1,000-1,500 people in the audience. The band was strong and gracious. The audience applauded heavily after each song, and the lead singer said each time "Thank you much. We appreciate it." "Reconciled" is a classic album.

been in a cave for forty days
Only a spark to light my way
I wanna give out, I wanna give in
This is our crime, this is our sin
But I still believe, I still believe
Through the pain and through the grief
Through the lives, through the storms
Through the cries and through the wars
Oh, I still believe
And flat on my back out at sea
Hopin' these waves, don't cover me
I'm turned and tossed upon the waves
When the darkness comes, I feel the grave
But I still believe, I still believe
Through the cold and through the heat
Through the rain and through the tears
Through the crowds and through the cheers
Oh, I still believe
I'll march this road, I'll climb this hill
Upon on my knees if I have to
I'll take my place up on this stage
I'll wait 'til the end of time for you like everybody else
I'm out on my own, walkin' the streets
Look at the faces that I meet
I feel like I, like I want to go home
What do I feel? What do I know?
But I still believe, I still believe
Through the shame and through the grief
Through the heartache, through the tears
Through the waiting, through the years
For people like us in places like this
We need all the hope that we can get
Oh, I still believe..!..

Wow, just heard this 1986 song for the first time Oct 2014 and I STILL BELIEVE!!!!!
Outstanding-
Rock on guys & girls,
Blozo The Clown
it is so cool the way he is playing that fretless bass,
my random youtube journeys deliver again! great stuff!
Most underrated band of the 80's.
Saw them live at a small club in San Diego so many years ago. And never forgot it!
I miss the 80s luv this song
