I am 66, and I always dismissed The Cure based on what I assumed about them from the one or two songs I had heard. I wasted decades when I could have seen them and grooved on them and spread the word about them. About two years ago, on a whim, I watched some of their fortieth anniversary show, and I was blown away. Still am.
This song is a rare work of art. A sparse mysterious poem overlayed on top of an absolute genius set of guitar tracks that take you on a trip deep into the woods of your own psyche. Robert Smith must have been inspired by an incredibly powerful force to write this. I’ll never grow tired of listening to it.

Thank you my Mum that I was born in 1964 and spent my 20's listening to great bands like the Cure, post Punk Britain, what a great period. The late seventies was a musical revolution and I'm so glad to have been able to have immersed myself into it...just music, nothing else, C90 or Vinyl, fucking bliss.
The joy it brought me when this song played in the episode. It's a special feeling when it's a song you'd listen to before the show was even announced.
It’s all about proportions and optimism! Nothing last forever. Even the hard time you are going through will eventually end followed by brighten days and the sun will shine on you once again. I promise (-: ☀️☀️☀️
This is one of those songs where every instrument comes together so wonderfully while still leaving this vacuous space between them. The bass line is amazing. And that snare! Robert's vocals are eerie and atmospheric. Miraculously composed and performed by one of the greatest bands on the face of the earth. A widely covered song and it's easy to see why.
My favourite all time song - gives me goosebumps every time - haunting.. When they toured Australia in 92 he sung this song in memory of a friend who had just died and the tears were streaming down his face and had to take a 5 minute break to compose himself and continue. An amazing privilege to witness that right in front of me...
This song has been the theme of my life. Skating down the street with my very first bright yellow walkman in the late 80's this piece and so many of other Cure songs became anthemic pieces that played in a continuous loop of escapism. Even now as I approach 48, I still skate, though nowhere near as hard, and still love moments alone with these tunes ringing in my ears as I reminise about the past. So evocatively beautiful as an individual song, I get goose bumps every damn time.
This song creates a feeling inside me I can’t quite describe… Robert’s again, again, and again transitioning into that guitar (3:11) is just wonderful 😍💫
Bloody hell,I'm 62 and while I'd heard some of the Cures music in the 80s/90s, I only heard this for the first time when it was used to play out the final episode of The Gold on BBC1 a couple of years ago. Robert Smith in this guise reminds me a lot of Terry Hall of the Specials in appearance and vocally
You know when a song gotta be good? If you can listen to it over and over again without skipping in the middle or somewhere else and always thinking "what a great song this is" every time it is playing and that from the release to almost 40 years later now.
Heard this at the end of the gold Ashamed to say I hadn’t heard it before even though I was around in the 80’s, what a fantastic track - the cure, I have a different view of them now wow, never too old to hear new things
Oh man, I recall every time this song came on, whether it was in the clubs we visited or just when we played it in the car or at any party, we had to get out there and dance. What an amazing song and what an amazing band. We enjoyed it then and still do, whenever I hear it, it brings back the memories and that great nostalgic feeling about that amazing era of music and entertainment in general, the 80s.
I can listen to this song again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again...

The recorded lyrics are quite a bit different from the original lyrics. But I prefer the recorded version.
Brilliant. No more to say. 🤔
This track was released 43 years ago. I remember hearing this as a boy and was blown away by the dark mysterious melody. It's one of my all time favourite tracks.
Didn't know Ben Affleck were such a talented singer

I can listen to this son on repeat again and again and again .
I heard this in the penguin and now it's stuck in my head
Welcome to the party.
One of best songs I've ever heard.. that bass, that BASS!!!

This song will forever be in the ears of millions.

- this masterpiece is now 44 years old.
- frightnening.
Help!
Remember Bach and Mozart...
And remember your face as young...
Too right. Cheers mate.
Yes! I heard that bass line and squealed! ❤
How is this song 40yrs old and still sounds so modern
this song sounds anything but modern
@@positivelastaction3957 Not a bad thing.
indeed,. how does the Cure write a song like this without having a band like the Cure to inspire them into this sound?
I am going through a lot right now and this song just seems so magical. It is like a ray of light in my dark mind. Such a beautiful song.
Be strong...
same, i hope you're doing better.
Were all currently fucked in the head. Goodluck and God bless
Me too Dads dying and this is my favorite
It’s all about proportions and optimism! Nothing last forever. Even the hard time you are going through will eventually end followed by brighten days and the sun will shine on you once again. I promise (-: ☀️☀️☀️
This was insanely good live at Glastonbury 2019. Robert Smiths voice is even better now. Like a fine wine it’s aged really well. Go see them live!
your the 3rd commend i saw about this, makes me want to see them too xD
@@GhalkeLawl just saw them at roskilde great stuff for real
I lost my chance this year and I'm so sad. I hope I can see them soon
So agree with u !
Ikr? I saw them two days ago and he was unreal on stage! Immense talent
The Penguin has had an amazing soundtrack so far but I was so surprised to hear this gem play! This is my favourite Cure song!
This is one of those songs where every instrument comes together so wonderfully while still leaving this vacuous space between them. The bass line is amazing. And that snare! Robert's vocals are eerie and atmospheric. Miraculously composed and performed by one of the greatest bands on the face of the earth. A widely covered song and it's easy to see why.
is that him in the video singing????
@@sleepnomore6065 It is. Young Robert.
@@jerm2011 omg! I never saw him as a youth! I only know one imagine of him. I thought this was a random guy lip-synching 😂
@@sleepnomore6065 no makeup. short hair.
The absolute rarest of moments: witnessing Robert Smith without any makeup and “normal” hair.
Actually just looked in the comments section to ask ' is that him without makeup ' 😂
As a surfer, this song perfectly replicates the feeling of gliding across the face of a wave
surfing is such a cool sport
The Cure are kinda masters of making repetition in music successful, they pull you in deeper and deeper into the music, and the forest metaphorically
Thanks Eric. Thanks.

I've heard the song before Eric but it brought it back to my collective consciousness.

Vive "l'amour ouf"!
Love the cure
The Penguin + L'amour ouf = here
Westworld, and now the Penguin. This song + HBO = banger. Just wished they used the part at 3:09 because it fits so well as a Peguin theme
There are many good songs. But there is not too many good songs that you will never get tired of. This is a masterpiece, and its intro even more
Such a clever song, for such a young band at the time.
The CURE definitely CURED me
My favourite all time song - gives me goosebumps every time - haunting.. When they toured Australia in 92 he sung this song in memory of a friend who had just died and the tears were streaming down his face and had to take a 5 minute break to compose himself and continue. An amazing privilege to witness that right in front of me...
I wish I was a teen in the 80’s man, such beautiful music
I was, it was the absolute best! At least you've got the music even now 😊
I was! It was a great time to be alive.
I was. HS and college. The Cure were on my playlist constantly.
This way you get the music without the AIDS epidemic, so, there's that
It was such a great time.... we were very lucky to have these great songs and artists.... but at least you can still listen to them 😊
This song has been the theme of my life.
@H.G. Bespoke. Thanks for sharing your story as I find myself remembering my best childhood memories through music.
Me too!
Best song by The Cure, Hands down, they created an entire genre of music with this industrial/synth/goth sound. Absolute trail blazers.
This song creates a feeling inside me I can’t quite describe… Robert’s again, again, and again transitioning into that guitar (3:11) is just wonderful 😍💫
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯🔥
Genius
A classic song and still one of the most iconic Cure tracks in their huge, and amazingly worthy catalog.
One of the greatest songs ever made
seriously?
Never been away the best 3 songs the Cure have ever made are A Forest,Charlotte Sometimes and Primary just brilliant
Song never ages
Bloody hell,I'm 62 and while I'd heard some of the Cures music in the 80s/90s, I only heard this for the first time when it was used to play out the final episode of The Gold on BBC1 a couple of years ago. Robert Smith in this guise reminds me a lot of Terry Hall of the Specials in appearance and vocally
You know when a song gotta be good? If you can listen to it over and over again without skipping in the middle or somewhere else and always thinking "what a great song this is" every time it is playing and that from the release to almost 40 years later now.
The music is so melancholic and haunting. I love it! A timeless classic.
Heard this at the end of the gold
Ashamed to say I hadn’t heard it before even though I was around in the 80’s, what a fantastic track - the cure, I have a different view of them now wow, never too old to hear new things
That drama was brilliant with incredible sound track especially this track.
The Penguin❤
I never get tired of this song.

Best Cure song.
Definitely

Close, but for me it's got to be faith. Best off seventeen seconds though.
Fight. Pictures of you. Just like heaven.
I mean their sound is pretty ripped off. They don't have anything original, but this song is awesome.
" L'amour Ouf " ♥
Oh man, I recall every time this song came on, whether it was in the clubs we visited or just when we played it in the car or at any party, we had to get out there and dance. What an amazing song and what an amazing band. We enjoyed it then and still do, whenever I hear it, it brings back the memories and that great nostalgic feeling about that amazing era of music and entertainment in general, the 80s.
