Tbh you canoe hulls could easily transform into anything (quite versatile starting point). I would say if you wanted to easily change the appearance, the addition of small details like fore/aft castles, superstructure, masts or adding an elevated bridge could spice up your builds. Also, Even though some of your hulls are massive, small details like railings, lifeboats, and engine room air intakes (I usually make them all from decorations) is what can truly bring a build to life. I'd try this out with an existing build to see how you like decorating it: add a perimeter railing, a couple life boats (or RHIBs) and several air intakes on the deck.

6:00 looks like a chubby ironclad battleship hull, like that of HMS Inflexible. Might want to round-off the stern a little, but otherwize good-looking.

Start with something simple, get good at it, and then add some flair to it.
All my ships are canoes, with straight-stemmed bows to minimize pitching when underway.
I've also got a thing for transom sterns, mostly because it makes the bow look more pointy by comparison.
Being obsessed with symmetry and patterns and order in general, I somehow decided that all my hulls would have a draught that's precisely 1/3 of the beam, and a waterline Length-to-Beam ratio of precisely 8:1. Thus I ended up with this:
    072x09x03
    120x15x05
    168x21x07
    216x27x09
    264x33x11
Aaand those turned out weird, so I started mixing up the numbers, which resulted in some reasonably-proportioned stuff, like a 168x27x09 dreadnought battleship, a 72x15x07 tramp steamer, and a 168x15x05 light cruiser.
Still can't build submarines worth a damn.

I have been trying semi-realistic builds using length, width, and armament from real warships, and it seems to have gone somewhat well, but I keep building armoured cruisers instead of anything with a decent armament. I did recently build something inspired by some early light cruiser/late protected cruiser designs, as well as a heavy cruiser based on the County class.

I do a modular attempt when creating ships. I build hulls with different amounts of space and then use the most suitable one for when I want to create a new ship. Even took my biggest hull and made it one giant LASER. :D

The whole cutting off weapons and armour thing works quite well for reducing cost. I have a battlecruiser/heavy cruiser that is quite expensive for its' firepower, cut off one of the turrets, aft superstructure, and some armour, and the cost went down by more than 50,000 and the speed even went up.

I kind of just pick random shapes and use breadboards to make them go straight. I would like to show off my awesome submarine, but I am still working out the kinks.
I know transitions and mimics exist, but I have no idea how to be fashionable with them.

I'm starting to get back in to FtD. It's been a long time - I vaguely remember the missile rework and graphics update, but didn't really play them.
I'm starting with re-learing engines, and boy is that an entirely different beast. I'm sure everything else has changed as well, as one thing the devs never seemed to do is small tweaks.
I learned a lot from your videos back in the day, and I'm sure I will again this time around. I'm already learning that my typical armor is wholly inadequate - I usually only did 3-4 layers max.

With the flat deck and single turret, they definitely have a ironclad look like the Monitor ships. They definitely used the stubby canoe shape. A few railings and embellishments and they would look pretty realistic.
You are the canoe master! No canoes is good canoes! Or something like that...

Why dont you begin the bow without slope stagger, and then add a stagger and increase it the closer you get to the middle, this way you get a nice curve to the hull without adding drag.

  • @FurryGram

I always end up using a fairly tug/dinghy shaped main body (wide with a sloped tip and blunt back) with a pontoon on each side for stability and added horizontal armor (though its usually alloy, its another compartment to punch through) as well as a place to put deck guns and hydrofoils for when stuff gets too heavy.
Because of the pontoons weight is rarely an issue until my boat runs out of air/speed, so i can make some superheavy cruisers with the only drawback being cost.

I myself prefer zeppelin shaped hulls, even though they are slightly painful to fit turrets into.
*But I could very easily take a canoe slice and make a zeppelin out of it*

Loved the video @Borderwise! Can't wait for the next video man! I would love to see a Tournament in From The Depths on the Channel and some more of the "Ashes of the Empire" Campaign or some more Building Streams for any Other Campaigns ( #Round2 #FinestHour #BritishPacificFleet ). I'm looking at the King George V-class Battleships of the Royal Navy at the Moment in case you're wondering and I'm thinking that one of them might be able to Solo about 3 Crossbones easily, though with an Overall Length of 745 ft. 1 in. (229.256 meters), a Waterline Length of 700 ft. 1 in. (215.410 meters), a Beam of 103 ft. 2.5 in. (31.756 meters) and a Draught of 33 ft. 7.5 in. (10.346 meters) with a Main Battery of 10 14"/45 Caliber Guns in 2 Quad and 1 Twin Mounts with 16.461 meter long Barrels, that might be up to maybe 5-6 Crossbones getting scrapped by one ship.
