The reason to buy this CX-60: A lot of focus on the interior, exterior, driving experience and comparisons with the CX-5. Which completely makes sense in a car review, but at the start of the decision tree when buying a new car you've got taxes and budget. No way would I consider buying a 3.3l diesel, no matter how good it will sounds or drive, it will be a tax nightmare. So this CX-60 looks very cool inside-out (ok, that's a very personal opinion), has a very powerful powertrain, low CO2, no range anxiety and full option it's 10 to 15K cheaper than a comparable X3, Q5 or GLC and a shorter delivery time (at least so I was promised, let's see in Jan). Many of the "cheaper" phevs also come with small 1.3, 1.5 or 1.6 engines and the reported consumption figures after the battery runs out are not good to say the least (easily over 10l/100km) while I'm expecting this one to stay around 8l/100km. All that made me decide to buy this beautifull CX-60 ;-)

But now I had it delivered two weeks ago and I absolutely love it! The drivetrain is perhaps not the smoothest and jerks sometimes, but the car has character and is beautiful inside out. Even though Mazda is aiming upscale, some base models are relatively affordable even in this crazy US auto market.....my Mom got a nice CX-5 (all AWD now) for under $28k...and my daily driver is the Mazda 3 hatchback...it's quite nice driving.

Manufacturers have gone overboard with the large wheels. If you get the top model with all the bells and whistles, you're stuck with the largest and most uncomfortable riding wheels. I have a 2019 Signature with the 19" wheels and those are just about perfect combination of ride and handling. Especially, since I upgraded the tires to Michelin Pilot All Season 4 that are superior in every way compared to the standard Toyo tires.

@@joggelweekend @joggelweekend @joggelweekend Yes, absolutely. It's really about the tire quality and design parameters. On my CX5 Signature I upgraded to a far better tire and increased the size somewhat to 245/50-19 with the Michelin Pilot All Season 4. Using an app, I found the difference in speedo reading is a miniscule 0.2%. At 60 mph the actual speed is 59.8 mph. This tire is better in every single way. It handles better, is quieter, has better ride quality and tread is rated to last twice as long. Plus, the difference in price is not that great. As a CX 5 owner top spec 2.2 diesel about to test drive the CX 60 I would say - every phev hybrid has a weight issue and the CX 60 is going to be better value ie £10 k less than most of premium competitors. Also it is less common and having had nothing go wrong with my current and previous cx5 I know the quality is high. After 60000 miles in each.
I don’t want plastic seats I had those for years in many cars and wouldn’t order a merc or BMW in non leather.
I can’t continue with diesel as many obstacles going into local cities and petrol alone is not efficient. Ie my diesel gives around 50mpg and a big petrol will be in low 30s at best.
Full EV not yet as too many changes happening and no full infrastructure.
Will wait until EV can run for 400 plus miles at similar cost to a loaded CX 60.
Also how many SUVs can handle like a Mazda. Not many and cost 30 grand more for similar driving exp and spec.

Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. Please tune in to what the animal leather industry tried to do here with our channel: ua-cam.com/video/nP_CvLlaFlI/v-deo.html
In general, depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat would be the reason no.1 in other cases, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you accept it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and destroys the environment, you make them more profitable. Also, if you turn the argument around "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize how biased the argument is. After all, would you care for which exact body part you would be murdered? Or imagine someone robs you on the street and beats you to death - would it matter to you if it was for your Smartphone or for your purse?
The animal agriculture industry occupies 2/3 of all farm land on this planet which cannot be used for direct human nutrition then. That is extremely inefficient. The no.1 cause for deforestation is the animal industry. It is also one of the biggest contributor to climate change. The amount of land, resources, energy and water being used is beyond imagination.
If you are interested in how the animals are being treated and transported in the global leather industry, watch this footage: ua-cam.com/video/tkjCAmq1_8E/v-deo.html
Note that the footage is genuine and was recorded by a highly decorated investigative journalist in Germany I know myself personally.
For the alternative, you can either use artificial fabrics which can be made from recyclables (we have already shown a lot of vehicles that use great fabric seats from PET-bottles etc.) or more and more also from plant-based materials (like Pinatex). And even if you would create a seat completely with petroleum without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is nothing in comparing just to once fueling up your car.
In practical reasons, fabric or microfibre seats are just more useful. You do not sweat in summer and it is not cold in winter. And if you want the slick look or something to wipe clean easier, that is possible with animal free leatherette.
And there are also new leatherette materials available which are superior in every aspect: ua-cam.com/video/u94YXJ72UTA/v-deo.html
More and more natural materials are rising: ua-cam.com/video/nRSsXEnwHDo/v-deo.html
Using animal skin on seats is a major issue of animal rights, human rights - and after all it is just common sense what is better both for the environment and just more practical and more luxurious for the customer. We cannot change what we have bought in the past (that also counts for ourselves of course!), but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

Had a test drive just for the fun of it with one of these PHEVs at a local dealer, was told that the model was a press car. Some thoughts coming in "blind" to the test drive: it has nice looking design overall, drivetrain was not smooth in normal driving situations, car seemed to sail from left to right in motorway driving (lane assist was supposed to be turned off), exterior seems large but the space is not well used (eg. front grille extends far out from the radiator with a lot of empty space in between, you can see it in the shot at 0:32), steering had a somewhat disconnected feel from driving the car, acceleration was enough for overtaking, would have liked a bit more tire noise insulation on rougher road surfaces, indicator sound was a bit annoying. It's a nice try, but not a car I would consider for the amount of money asked for it.

Great review again Thomas.Just 2 points i would like to make.First, you must cater for more space at the back passenger seats.Mazda have this problem with all their suvs. The room at the back is woeful.Second, the price of a CX-60 is very high and here you have to ask yourself do you buy the Mazda or do you go for a premium European.I know what most people would go for and that is the Mercs,BMW,Audies ect.Mazda cant compete with that type of luxury.People will always opt for a Merc, for the status, than a Mazda. That is why Mazda should have remained as a sub luxury brand offering great value for money and being Japanese, reliability and lower costs.Nobody in the world would mention Mazda in the same breath as Merc,BMW,Audi.I do OWN a CX-5,2019 model and i am in love with it.It does feel luxurious and premium, even though it is not.Japanese luxury?Of course Lexxus, yes they can give those top europeans a run for their money and they have.

I think PHEV is better than full electric at the moment. Thomas said that most manufacturers are moving away from PHEV, and while certainly true, i don't think it should be happening. Just because lots of people don't use PHEVs correctly doesn't mean that they are a bad technology. Full EVs don't have much range, even the most expensive ones. Plus EV range is not fixed, it is variable depending on weather conditions, driving conditions and age of the battery. If you need to take long trips, especially in very cold or very hot weather, EVs are going to be a nightmare. PHEVs allow you to have essentially an EV for most daily needs while still retaining the ability to travel if you want to. And in Europe with energy prices skyrocketing, you are not saving any money on petrol anyway. I think most manufacturers should be making more PHEVs at least for the next decade. It is too soon to abandon them.

Thanks for your extensive driving review of the CX-60. I came here to watch as a reference to the upcoming larger but very similarly designed plug-in hybrid CX-90 here in the U.S. The CX-90 models were just revealed in the US but will not be officially released for sale until mid-2023. I am most interested in the plug-in PHEV CX-90 model but wonder if it will lack more of the Mazda sporty appeal you talked about. I guess it is acceptable in my view since I am more about saving fuel than having sporty performance. Hahaha. As a side note, I LOVE how your driving footage shows how German motorists know how to use directional indicators (blinkers) as a natural part of driving when making a turn or changing lanes. One of my biggest pet peeves driving in America is how many drivers do not use (or do not even know how!!!) their blinkers thus reducing safety and courtesy on the road.

Interesting that Mazda still do not appear to have completed the necessary engineering homework before releasing this model to the public. Whilst the interior seems to be first class, hopefully other driving characteristics will be further improved. The CX 60 is due to be released in Australia in June and local reviews should highlight any weaknesses, should there be any. I prefer Nappa leather which will be standard on the top version.

Thomas, can you comment on how often the ICE turns on when in EV mode? Some consumers find PHEVs turning it on very frequently, almost like a plain mild hybrid, especially with the Hyundai models. Other models turn on the ICE very rarely and feel like driving a pure BEV. Where does this model fall in this spectrum? Does using the HVAC system turn on the ICE?
