  • You've probably heard the expression "pepper them with jabs" or read about the "flicker jab" in the #boxing anime Hajime No Ippo. This tutorial covers how to whip jabs at quick speeds, while using minimal energy, to score points, frustrate your opponent, and find patterns.
    Concepts covered in this video:
    1. Extension // Point of Impact // Retraction
    2. Open-Hand Punches
    3. Energy Conservation & Adjusting Power Levels

    Flicker jabs are the ultimate set up, in my opinion. I use it to set up several combos-sometimes even to set up other types of jabs. Depending on how you throw them it can still rack up damage if you hit 10 flickers on the same spot in a single round.
    Use it enough and the opponent will learn to expect them. It sets them up for a big surprise when you land the big punches outta nowhere and helps you lead the opponent on.
    (Also love the Hajime no Ippo reference)

    I added speed to my jab by slightly rotating my shoulders. Its a push / pull thing... when the jab arm goes forward you should pull your other hand back slightly. (see Muhammad Ali for example) This will create a rotation in your shoulders launching your front shoulder forward which in turn explodes your jab hand forward... A fast power step forward also will add velocity and power to the jab... Nice video, good job explaining how not to leave the jab hanging out there, I still see high level pro fighters doing that with the jab and the cross...

    BEST VIDEO I HAVE EVER SEEN ON THE FLICKER!!!!
    I use them all, and the flicker is my primary hand to hand strike for MMA. My background is a lot of Jeet Kune Do and Muay Thai, and I find the flicker makes them want to run enough that my long kicks are especially effective until they charge in and get caught by my clinches, knees and elbows, or a little jujitsu for the win... anything less than that and my "peppering them" with my flickers just demolishes them. (down chop attacks their shoulders, upshot attacks their chin, straight in keeps them from getting comfortable in their guard). 😊👍

  • @dirtpoorchris

    I always called this "shadow striking" because you are treating your arm like a snake and your wrist is the snake head. So its starts from the wrist wanting to go forward and then you add the rest of your arm muscles to it. But flicker jab sounds way better. I wanted to call it shadow striking because it has no windup of shoulder muscles and its very hard to see comming. So some lightning uppercuts where the opponents own guard arm blocks their view would be shadow strike school too.

    • @whyareyoubothering
      @whyareyoubothering 3 роки тому +5

      @@kadenmullins5036 yes but that was something Tom Hearns inspired. The philly shell is inspired from Mayweather Jr. and the purpose of the shell is not offense but to hug your arm across your body and really blade your shoulders toward the opponent. The body becomes covered and a shoulder roll completely avoids frontal attacks and shields the face. Hearns used his Hitman stance to increase offense. A lowered hand is not visible from a certain range. With a lightning fast punch the opponent has to instinctually avoid getting hit rather than reactively. Hearns also had long arms making this hard for opponents to get inside without taking a few hits or to increase his ring pressure by cornering opponents.

    I used to hold eggs in my hands and punch wood hanging from a rope to develop my wrists. Its pretty hard to punch full speed and push the wood up far with eggs in your hand but you start to learn wrist intention and its power. Your instinct is to clench your fist to add more muscle and you must learn to defeat that. Clenching your fist is very very good for making a solid momentum crusher but you only wanna clench at the last second or you are reducing your strike speed.

    Many, many years ago, Paul Vunak addressed this in his attributes video. You should do something with Vu as he is a total header and you’ll have great fun (and a hangover)

    About the point of impact i always used to train the heavy bag with gloves on but now i train bare hands just touching it fast and i think the movement is more efficent for the impact and the retraction. Everything is faster and It benefits shoulders also.
