2024 Toyota Land Cruiser | Smaller & More Affordable! AKA the Land Cruiser Prado / Land Cruiser 250
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 лип 2023
- Toyota's iconic Land Cruiser goes in a different direction for 2024, well, for N. America at least. Instead of growing like the last few generations did, the only Land Cruiser we will get is the Land Cruiser Prado / Land Cruiser 250 sold elsewhere in the world. Dimensionally this model is closer to the 1990 Land Cruiser 80 Series than the last Land Cruiser sold in the USA. That means it'll be easier park and better off road as well. Toyota also intends this Land Cruiser to be more affordable with a starting price "in the mid 50s" which is a big departure from the last version. The base version even gets cloth seats! Also a major change? Toyota's new 2.4L turbocharged hybrid system will be standard on all models.
Prado? What’s that? Here’s what’s going on. Elsewhere in the world there have been two Land Cruisers for a while, the “big” one that we also got and the “Land Cruiser Prado” which we only got in Lexus form (the GX). This generation they flipped and the US Land Cruiser will be the smaller version sold elsewhere in the world. Also a twist: the Prado name is being dropped in some markets in favor of “Land Cruiser 250” while the bigger model will be the “Land Cruiser 300”

I actually like both
Super tuff decision!!
Round headlights FOR SURE!
I think I do as well. Hard to choose though
Round heritage?
Toyota installs hard plastics in a corolla for $25k: Cheaping out
Toyota installs hard plastics in a Landcruiser for $55k: Durability
True
Yea i think it was really a request from the enthusiasts to make the panels power-washing friendly and im glad Toyota did that. Anybody who wants the luxury can simply go to the normal trims.
My uncle still drives his 50th anniversary Land Cruiser and the interior looks amazing. And that's a 22 year old truck.
Cloth and plastic all the way if you live in the tropics near the ocean or if you deal with animals or if you live where dirt roads create dust in the summer and mud in the winter months.
@@LuizStocklerHenrique cloth it's the way to go for sure
I dig it. It's closer to the spirit of the Land Cruisers from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. I never thought the Land Cruiser should have been a suburban competitor but that's what the previous two generations became. The Sequoia does a fine job filling that space. I love seeing the LC return to its roots, similarly to what Ford has done with the Bronco.
Globally this is the LC Prado...they could have kept the other one (new 300series) for those that wanted it and then brought this to market as well...the 200 series was too expensive...so the 300 series could have gone down in spec (less leather, more cloth) and come in above this in price...say 68-80k as a 2row and the Sequoia as the 3row top of mountain 3row alternative
Still no front lockers for true off-roading or 2WD mode for fuel economy.
@NickTarterOKC Land Cruiser (wagon) offered in US was never a Suburban competitor.........
yes it is @@radio9730.
@@radio9730. Suburban may not have been exactly accurate, but I drive a 2003 GMC Yukon (obviously based on the same platform as the GMT800 Suburban) and the 100 series has almost identical dimensions to my Yukon. What I really meant to say was that the newer Land Cruisers in the USA were more akin to full size truck based SUVs like a Tahoe or Expedition than their older counterparts. The Sequoia fills the full size SUV role well for Toyota. I like the idea of the Land Cruiser returning to its place as a more agile family off roader.
Gotta love the return of tweed upholstery in a Toyota!
Toyota should bring it back for for the base trim on all it's vehicles.
Excellent review, as always, Alex!
This is one of the best reviews of the 2024 Prado on UA-cam, currently.
Thank you.
This is pretty much everything I have hoped they would do for the Land Cruiser. Having owned them for 30 years I have dreamed of a lower cost, smallwrcoackaged, returns to basics model. Sign me up. That 1958 looks absolutely perfect. The FJ60 to me is the best looking Cruised and that thing just pulls at the ol heart strings!
if they ACTUALLY start at $55k
This is a step down land cruiser, an affordable version of land cruiser for the regular joe.
@@rnt45t1 markups and waits will be a real thing I bet. The Tahara plant has been struggling to keep up with demand just Roth the old/current 4Runner
@@Phi.D.888 At 55k that's a $1k monthly payment for most people. That qualifies as "affordable" for the regular Joe?
I just watched half a dozen new TLC videos and they all pretty much said the same thing, until I watched your video and all of a sudden I’m finding twice as much detail about the new model. Good work!
I'm absolutely loving the styling of this thing, and I especially adore those circular headlights.
The cloth interior pattern of the base model is pretty pleasing too.
This '58 edition has the same seat fabric I had in my old Tercel awd
Love the cloth interior. Reminds me of the old T100 we used on the ranch I worked at during college.
I like both the boxy and round headlight designs equally. Good on them for making both.
Magnificent break down. Full details, no BS, and thankfully no silly jokes irrelevant to the vehicle being reviewed. Thanks for delivering very useful information. I want to buy one of these Land Cruiser if the dealers doesn’t get silly with the pricing mark ups.
55k isn’t a good deal
Bravo on the seat fabrics in the 1958 edition. These textures give the feeling of durability of the fabrics used on the JDM Crowns from the 80s and 90s and now also being used on the new USDM Crown.
Wow! Wasn’t expecting this! Love the look and so happy they right-sized it! Have been wondering about the next gen 4Runner but I’m now more interested in the Landcruiser. Congrats Toyota!!
1958 Edition all day! Plastic is good, durable. Armest is getting upholstered in cloth anyways same fabric as the seats! Cloth seats FTW!
The armrests are!? I missed that detail.
Upholstery reminds me of my dad's old Toyota when I was growing up in Japan 😂
Great video and review for this Toyota's most iconic ... keep it up and coming. Thanks!
I love the round headlights. I'd probably wrap the bezel around the front grill with white vinyl as well as that panel around the headlight, and of course, the top of the roof, too.
I love it! Boxy, upright, groun clearance, level belt line, roof line, squared off, rugged, masculine, grab handles on the A pillar for not only the passenger but driver as well, head room, chunky everything! Toyota finally nailed it! One possible deal breaker, NIMH batteries for the hybrid system? NIMH batteries have a memory effect and are just plain awful. Can you confirm NIMH? LiIon or LiPO would have been a better choice at any price point. You rock Alex!
Great detailed video. Thank you.
I’m just enamored, I can already see it, white base model with black steelies, a slight lift and larger meat tires. I absolutely love that interior, such a great throwback to the 90s
I like what they have done here. Hopefully they take a page out of the Bronco playbook and offer a future model that combines the 1958 with the skid plates and other serious off-road equipment.
Or the Trail Haunter edition like the Taco.
I owned a built for offroad 80 series for 11 years, currently own a built 100 series. Am interested in the new Landcruiser, glad to see it coming back to America, although it's interesting to see it referred to as SMALLER! I know, it's smaller than the 200 series, but even smaller it's still a little BIGGER than my current 100 series is.
I like the whole function over form vibe. Such a departure from all those so called premium SUV's.
The square headlights took some time to get used to but I prefer them now. Less retro and less likely to age
Thank you for the nice video!
I really hope they can make enough of these and keep the dealers from doing price mark-ups!
Sadly limited production for a while, only about 16,000 are coming to the USA the first year of production. 4Runner is and will be the volume model, the new 4Runner is coming in the spring

4runner!!
I like this retro vibe thats going on with the 2024 land cruiser.
Its also nice to see the SUV come down in pricing without being too obvious. I love the round headlights of the base model bit i still prefer the squared off lights of the higher trims.
I love the headlights!
Looks so nice!!
So cool! Very happy to see more and more retro inspired cars. I think this is the Land Cruiser that so many people wanted in America. Interested now in seeing what they will do with the 4Runner. If it's actually possible to get one of these in the $50's, the new 4Runner will have to go down-market a bit right?
Really digging the circular headlights version 🤤
Defender'esque
@@mziwendukuntsele671nope, it's retrostyled to look like older Land Cruisers

Really love what Toyota did, for years everyone complained about the Land Cruiser being too big and premium so Toyota made it smaller and de-contented it a lot more which I think is perfect. If you want the luxuries, go to the GX and LX. Smart move Toyota, plus reducing the price by almost 40grand is an absolute win in my books
I agree
it's a LC Prado, not a LC300, so I guess toyota marketing strategy works, people like you believe the land cruiser got cheaper..
@@juliolopez8145it's utterly hilarious how many people I've seen who actually think this is supposed to be the lc300😂. It seems a lot of Americans really have no idea of what the car industry is like outside of their borders.
The American market never have the "prado" marketing. Folks don't know what that mean. It's just "landcruiser" here, confusingly enough bc there is several grades of landcruiser abroad.
@@juliolopez8145 I know the Land Cruiser Prado is what this is overseas but they call it a Land Cruiser for us which is what it is, so for the US market it has gotten cheaper and smaller, for everyone else it’s a different version. We don’t get the 300 series so this is our Land Cruiser. My parents are Nigerian and when we lived in Nigeria we owned a Land Cruiser Prado so I’m very aware that they are 2 different vehicles
How did I not know there is a Land Cruiser Museum in Salt Lake City?!
what phone was on the charge pad? fits perfectly!
Prado is an amazing vehicle, the diesel engine has a whistle exhaust that I love. They do last forever.
Is the well known LC Prado. Same Lexus GX. US market knows now how great it is. Toyota money makers department knows how “in” off roading is these days. Hoping they bring the diesel engine, one of the best ever.
Yep, although internationally it looks like the “Prado” name is going to get dropped.
They basically killed the Landcruiser and assigned that name to FJ to compete with Bronco. I suspect they will greatly increase the sales with new lower prices.
I think you hit the nail on the head!
I think the 4runner will be the bronco and wrangle competitor. And higher model.
They didn't kill the Landcruiser.... They just gave you guys the Landcruiser prado that the rest of the world has always had. What you guys would consider an actual landcruiser is the Landcruiser 300 which is the successor to the Landcruiser 200 but you guys don't get it anymore while the rest of the world does. Instead you get the Lexus version which is the LX
300 series exists, this is a Prado
@@bjsimon802hope you’re right. Want a wrangler look alike from Toyota
Will there be a manual transmission option?? Will there be an option for a third row? No in-line 6 cyl? At lest they may make the round head lights.
Great review.
Good design but I am little surprised why they didnt preserve the classic fender shape. Land rover defender designs are very modern but they still kept the classic fender shapes. This current boxy fender shape with five side from the land cruiser looks good also but I prefer the classic look of the 3 sided fenders.
I wish it came with steel wheels on the base. Looks like Toyota will have another struggle to keep the dealers from adding market adjustment pricing, they won’t be able to keep up with demand.
That’s for sure, only about 16,000 will come to the USA the first year, the factory is running at full capacity in Japan
Wow! I really want one! Love the design!
Nice video sir thanks God bless
Disappointing ground clearance, tire size, and absence of a front locker. I was hoping for a lot more with this launch.
To me it's just fine for an OEM offering. Doesnt need to be a Bronco Sasquatch to do what people who buy this or 4Runner type vehicles want to do. If you want slightly larger tires, or a mild lift, I'm sure the aftermarket will accommodate and that is just fine by me.
You know a trd pro will come in a year or 2.
Important point that Toyota does not advertise this kind of power train as hybrid. That's why I don't see any hybrid badges around. The purpose of this electrical system component is just to boost the power, not to save gas. That's why they won't advertise it as hybrid.
Yea cuz people know Toyota hybrids that have a normal 4 cyl and an e cvt like the prius
People associate Toyota hybrids with Prius, so I understand why they would spin this setup as performance oriented... but at the same time, they could have had an ad campaign where they prove hybrid can mean power, torque, and off-road ability.
Ultimately, “Hybrid” is about saving gas. If Toyota wanted power without saving gas they’d have kept a V8 in this thing. The only reason for downsizing to a 4 cylinder with an electric assist is to save gas. Toyota doesn’t market it as a hybrid because they know shoppers for the Land Cruiser don’t want their truck associated with the Prius.
Still saves gas though…. Significantly more fuel efficiency then the 4.0l V6 and the older V8s….
@@jaanfo3874exactly! Well said. It 100% is still meant to save gas, or else they would have kept the V8
That is an awesome new ride
Let’s normalize not putting soft touch on the dash that I never touch and putting it down at my knees where I rest them. 😤😤
Standard markup for the first year will be about 25k-50k. Can't wait to sell it to you.
Just use a dealer that doesn’t markup. They exist and even with shipping you’ll be less than your local dealer’s insane markup.
they will be on BaT like the new broncos getting ridiculous prices
Looks great!! I hope the new 4Runner is nice and has a reasonable price! This definitely looks like an upgraded new generation 4Runner.
Would love to know from someone who has sat in both this and the new Tacoma. Which one sits more upright with better outside visibility?
Ooooh, I'm intrigued!
Toyota coming in hot with their new redesigns 😎
I hope the 4runner starts at 40k.
I see a lot of 80-Series and 60-Series in the rear... aside from the lack of split gate. I'd take a stripped 1958. Also looking forward to an inevitable TRD version.
I just hope they don't Pathfinder-ize the 4Runner.
This thing is a WINNER. Man, if I didn’t want/need a truck I’d be buying this over the new Tacoma, fosho. I’ve always been a Land Cruiser & GX fanboy. And Toyota did this _and_ the new GX *correctly.* I ADORE the 1958 edition. I’d slap some knobby KO2s & window tint on that bad boy and be happy as a clam.
This thing looks amazing awesome work Toyota
I look forward to driving one of these when it comes out. Stupid question for anyone to answer please - does the hybrid system do away with the auto start/stop feature? I didn't seen an auto start/stop button anywhere in the cabin during the video and can't stand when an engine shuts off when I come to a stop.
Yes in a way since its a full hybrid so it has an EV mode and will drive along at low speeds with the engine off. If you want the engine to stay on forever, no it won’t do that, the engine turns on and off depending on the power demand for the drivetrain.
Did they say how many gallons the gas tank is? Hopefully it has a great range
What is the width with the mirrors folded? Its 84.2 inches including mirrors (unfolded). Will it have an option for power folding mirrors? Narrow trails in the woods... narrow parking spaces... I use the power folding feature in my Jeep GC Summit often... even to have more elbow room in my own garage. I've owned two previous Land Cruisers ... loved them... 1994 and a 2004... drove them for ten years each (so 20-years with a LC as my daily driver )... however... I'm spoiled with the Jeep GC top-end trim. Looking at the GX but it will not have the hybrid... so far. I'm hopeful they will offer a top-end trim with power mirrors and an extra quiet ride on the highway for business phone calls.
Completely floored by the pricing. This is great news compared to all our manufacturers jacking up the prices on everything else. Sure it's not the full blown 300-series the rest of the world gets, but I'm just glad Toyota brought the Land Cruiser name back to North America. I'm extremely interested to see how Toyota prices the next generation 4Runner against this new Land Cruiser.
Can’t wait for this to be $80k + once dealers get their hands on em.
Zero chance dealers stick to Toyotas MSRP. I laughed like hell when Alex said affordable.
The base cost as much as a TRD Pro 4Runner..
It's totally unaffordable. A trd pro 4runner fully loaded used to be $48k.... this starts at 50k.... dealer mark ups 75k+
55k for a base model with hard plastics, cloth seats and Tiny screens is not affordable. Toyota could sell this for 45k and make plenty of money. They just added 10k of pure profit bc there are a lot of idiots who will pay these bloated prices. See Jeep and every pickup truck in America.
I prefer the round headlight look.
looks good. I want one.
Suspension front and back, compared to the Tacoma?
LOVE the round headlights.
I’m happy that it’s much cheaper than the old one, but $50k is still expensive for a base model with an all-plastic interior. Throughout the video, I was wondering how there will be an extreme overlap in their lineup with the next 4Runner.
Yeah why didn't they just offer a hybrid on the 4runner? What's the point of another similar sized SUV?
It's smaller because it's a Land Cruiser Prado (Toyota are marketing it as the successor to the 200 series in the US) - the US doesn't get the actual successor to the previous Land Cruiser 200 series. In other markets Toyota offers the 300 series which is larger and more expensive than this vehicle.
the higher trim model has an SDM button with the 4WD buttons, but the base model does not. What is the SDM system?
Very nice!
Looks great! Every car in this day and age should be a hybrid standard. Too bad it's not a PHEV.
EV are trash and are not good for long drives or rugged terrain.
Surprising to me how large that HV battery appears to be-Ford is using liquid cooled batteries in their hybrids and they take up hardly any space. Seems like a miss for Toyota.
A good looking vehicle. Price is attractive.
Is the Land Cruiser and 4 Runner gonna look the same with basically same price point?
What does the "SDM" button do?
I'm shocked that a new-gen vehicle is smaller than the previous gen. The trend for many years over most manufacturers is that vehicles are upsized with each new generation and this one bucks that trend. I'm glad, as some vehicles, specifically full-size pickups, are just too big these days. I like this Landcruiser a lot, especially in the base round headlight trim.
It’s only “technically” smaller because our Land Cruiser here in the states is technically the smaller Prado sold elsewhere. The “real” Land Cruiser is the LX and it’s very much the same size.
The Prado has always been the junior partner to the Land Cruiser……..this is a smaller model by definition, which carries the older brother’s name…..The Prado was sold overseas as a Prado and in the US as a Lexus to raise revenue for Toyota. The overseas version could be had as a very basic off-reader. In the US, it became a lux GX.
300 series exists
Yep you get less vehicle for more money

Such shame Nissan ditched the xterra.
The round head lights are a big win!
We may need a "gobs and gobs" tshirt
Oooh, i like it!
I hope everybody buys this so I can buy a Sienna. 😂
I'm really not a Toyota "guy" but love what they've done here - I think they've got a hit here - provided there will be lots of aftermarket parts adoption it should be very successful. $50k is a lot of money but given that the average new vehicle price is astronomical the pricing should be okay too.
Love the less is more strategy, cloth seats are awesome
Does anyone know if the front diff is aluminum or steel?
2.4l 4 cyl for 55 grand starting??? What’s the point of buying this over the new 4runner which will presumably be much cheaper base price.
Disappointing to see nothing with the Tacoma/sequoia engine package.
4R likely wont be a hybrid (at least not in that rumored less expensive version). To me the hybrid is pretty darn cool with the 2400w inverter power onboard for camping or other activities/work.
@@ALMX5DPuntil the battery(ies) ages past its useful life, right?
@@stingygunner sure maybe in 15-20 years definitely.
If you want this Land Cruiser with a V6, that’s the Lexus GX. It gets the turbo V6 from Tundra and will likely get the V6 hybrid from the Tundra as well. This is a different customer target so they went with the 2.4L hybrid from Tacoma.
This is so damn exciting I can barely contain myself.
Do you think we still get a new 4runner?
Can someone confirm the size of the suv? Is it going to be the same as the Lexus gx550?
$50k starting price. Who is this for?
I mean, the average new vehicle in America is $48,000 so its not far off. That’s complete insanity in my book, but that’s still the way the market looks right now.
I think it’s too high $50,000 ridiculous now if they start around 25,000 that would be great more affordable easier on the wallet you know most of us only make around 30,000 to 40,000 a year you guys are trying to kill us you’re not trying to sell anything to us you just wanna sell to the freaking richgood luck there’s less of them than there are us
