  • Getting your carbureted engine to snap off idle like an injected one, can be a simple matter of fine tuning the accelerator pump. Here are the basics you need to know on both Holley and Edelbrock style carbs.

Yep! Same here. Now I've learned the basics over time, lol. I still watch these though. Because not only do I learn a new thing here or there, but it also reminds me of things I forgot. Because as of late I havent had to tinker as much with the carbs because of the newer fuel injection in the driveway. Problem is, I still have my old stuff I like to play with. But since playing with tham has become rarer. I forget a lot of the little things.

Love these simple tips that make such a huge difference. There are less and less people to share this knowledge. And for young people that have experience with new gen programmable cars..... The combination of any 5 or 6 of these little tips from Uncle Tony. ( sounds weird even to type. I'm at least as old as Tony lol ) , would make a full second or more difference at the end of the run. And huge advantage in roll on, in the street say. It would be the rough equivalent of that first stage one tune on an otherwise completely stock new vehicle. As in... no amount of money you spend after that will ever make as much of a difference.
My cousin was a motorcycle mechanic with a fondness for British and Italian bikes, as well as cars.. And had a 455 Buick that would snap to redline like a 340 dodge smallblock. Was amusing as hell...

UT.. i’ve got a 40 Ford with a Chevy 350 small block, no modifications with a Edelbrock 1406 four barrel. During the cooler weather I noticed it running fine as the weather got warmer it seems like it actually had to be leaned out because in the warmer weather it wanted to stall out sitting at a light for it hesitated when you went to takeoff and as you let off the throttle after going any type of speed over 50 or 60 it would backfire a lot out of the exhaust pipes but not the carburetor. At one point the idol was up there nice around 900 850 in gear it would be about 650 to 700 which which I liked because if I turned on the air conditioning it would even go lower but lately it’s Gone back to this almost to Rich low idol 400 in gear 600 in Park. Is there a generic starting point I could go with on that 1406 screw both mixture screws all the way down back them out one and a half turns or or watt and then adjust the idle screw from there because it seem like I had it right and then I went for a drive and everything changed to get real high idle it started that pop in again out of the pipes it was surging again while driving it’s slow any help there thanks JT...I just wanted to add the guy that works on my car is a real hot rod guy and it’s hard to get with him sometimes and with the weather change I had to monkey around with the carburetor myself before this kind of stuff he had it all right in that cooler weather and I know the timing and everything is good on it I’ve got a new transmission in it new torque converter new fuel cell so I drive it every day it runs great but that carburetor is becoming a erratic

After that its fine and runs good after that.. i changed the accelerator pump thinking it was that but it didn't help much.. the carb has a knob and also a adjusting screw. Do ypu know where to start and how i can send you some pics of how the carburetor looks like

Hi what about a flat spot at 4000 rpm? Then wakes back up. Advance sticking?

A bad spot on a old Holley is the ball check valve on the bottom of float bowl. Too much clearance between ball and retainer bar and pump shot will be wasted going back into the float bowl. Modern rubber check valve eliminated this.

on a holley 850 front squirters is there supposed to be a checkball under the squirter or just that rod? Since carb was new d.side of the squirter dribbles then squirts. Changing squirters same thing. Im lost...thats my hesitation when I blip the throttle at idle.

My holly six pack accel squirter doesn’t have the 3 holes. I noticed it has cam actuation, do you just replace the cam ramps for different levels of squirt aggression? Thanks

I love your videos! Watch them all the time! I do have a question tho. I have a Holley 4160 750cfm vacuum secondaries. Off idle punch is great but half throttle it bogs and tries to die. Fresh rebuild, new diaphragms and power valve. Everything else checks out great. I was running an Edelbrock 600 and everything ran great and I switched to this Holley and driveability went into toilet. Any suggestions? Idles great, responds great but driving at half throttle it cuts out

My edelbrock shreds accelerator pumps after minutes of use. Wish they were made of something a little more heavy duty.

the pump hole must be smooth, fine grit paper will do the job

I'd try smearing a little dab of vasaline on it after making sure there was no rough spot where the plunger rides.

Theres gotta be somthing pokin out to do that... The pump body should be perfectly smooth. Either that or maybe youre damaging them when putting them in(??) Im not being insulting, speaking from experience. In my early wrenching days i didnt understand "finesse" LOL and tore a few...

Great tips from UTG, but he's yet to mention how instrumental a Wideband 02 gauge is in tuning a carburetor for EFI like performance.

A completely unrelated question would be how fast can cars be before you need to buy a trap door oil pan? I'm running a front sump pan.Sounds like some engines blow up when trying to stop too fast as well with a rear sump configuration.

Thanks Uncle Tony,I learn something new everyday.Do you remember when Demon Carbs came out? I bought one and it looks very close to a Holley except it's prettier. It's a 625cfm. I want to put it on my 350/300 crate motor thinking it would be a nice to drive smooth running carb, not to big and not to small.I saw an article on the motor I just described and bought it but they showed this engine with a Holley 750.My question is ,Is the 750 to big or the Demon to small? The car would be a week ender with a little show and go.I figured the 625 wold be a good all around carb.I did go to places like Summit and Jegs looking for parts for this carb BUT all they have now is a newer style. If the Demon I have turns out to be too small I figured I could get the parts I want to bump it up a little more than it is.I haven't started the engine yet I just took it out of the crate and put it in my car so that's why the question.I figured you have tons of knowledge and couldn't go wrong asking you. Thanks Uncle Tony...
