- Last time around we helped our friend Austin rebuild his first carburetor, a 750 Edelbrock. This time we install it on his 318 Poly 1965 Sport Fury to replace the anemic 450 Holley he had been running. The smile on his face after taking her for a rip tell the whole story.

@David Cook Tony didn’t charge me anything. He saw my car at his open house, invited me back for a video, we rebuilt the carburetor, he came out and helped when my engine broke down from 40 miles away of his own volition(I actually offered to bring back the carburetor because I wasn’t sure if the engine was in a quickly repairable state), and we slapped it on. He got the content, I got the carburetor and experience. He’s a great guy and I can say that first hand.

Lol the truth I have a 17 year old son doesn't play videogames only watches utube and rebuild ATV motors got a 🔧 in his hand at 2 years old and he has never looked back I buy people project's lol junk and fixes everything wrong with them and then sell it and move on to the next one skills he will have for life same thing my dad did for me

I own a set of those bushing tools. Something you only need once in a blue moon, but worth their weight in gold.

Some tools you just need to use once and they pay for themselves. Remember, these saved *pulling the motor.*
I actually am in the market for that tool. I believe the beat up sludge packed 318 in my 5th avenue might have this issue. Gonna check soon. Been busy rebuilding the front end and brakes tho. But my timing acts nuts. And its not the chain...
@@ronprice7495 if it's really as full of sludge as you make it sound, might be worth pulling the motor. Assuming that you can have it out of service that long.
Well i have had the i take off to do a cam and lifter job. Only because of a tick that was more present than not. This is a roller engine. I pulled TONS of flaky crap out. It was all pilled on top the lifter spider. I even used a shop vac it was so bad. This was some years ago now. Since i have done oil changes every few hundred miles. Then went to every thousand. Id say after 15 oil changes i got it cleaned out pretty good. Then the car sat for for years. Then i had to put it on the road for a daily driver through winter. Now its my only car but i lost my job. So just bumming around the house fixing it up..

@@paisleyprince5280 Eh, just your typical younger guy who knows a little but not too much about old cars. Being around tony who is ALL about these cars, surely makes people awkward. Think of it as your first day on the job as some apprentice knowing near jack shit and learning from your boss/mentor. If only old people hoard these cars till they die, and gatekeep young kids from the community, the old cars will die with the old people.

@@paisleyprince5280 You can tell he's motivated and trying to learnt some stuff for himself though. You don't pick up experience on these motors for free like you do on LS's.
Watching you swap out carbs brought me back to better times...been there, done that, right down to the temporary "fuel fountain." Remember when throttle linkages consisted of bars and rods, not cables?
Great stuff, Uncle Tony; you keep us gearheads, from the Golden Age of Horsepower, educated and entertained.

This 750 has really awakened more potential of this motor and I can’t thank Tony enough for the carburetor! I never would have tried a bigger carburetor because of the experience I had when we put a Holley 600 on it. I ate crow thinking the 750 would be too big, but at least it’s delicious crow lol.
Hopefully Bill still lets me hang around his shop with my car having an Edelbrock on it lol! He’s a die hard Holley guru but I can’t deny the Edelbrock performs better for my engine and it’s staying on!
I ran a Holly 600 on my poly back in the day in a 66 SF. Had the same thoughts of it being large enough. Didn’t have the luxury of trying what you just did. Nice, enjoy !
Wonder if there was something wrong with the 600, I think it should have been OK, especially if that Weiand intake is a single plane job. But hey, if the 750 works - go with it. What did you take off, a 450?
@@rotaxtwin we thought so, but it was brand new and I ended up giving it to my friend who has a 75 Charger Daytona with a 360, and it works great and is still on it as we speak. Freak anomaly there.
@@rotaxtwin and it is a single plane with a gigantic plenum. That’s what we think was the issue was the plenum size.
@@austinlacroix888 yeah you're probably right about the plenum volume.
A long bolt and a piece of plate is what I've always used for pulling bushings and bearings. Not just distributor bushings. Nice job finding the factory service tool.
Uncle Tony helps him rebuild his first carb and then immediately recommends adding a bottle. I love it!! 😂
I think we are ok as long as this project doesn't end up being a poly in a Miata...

I haven't used any SAE tools in forever. I work at a body shop and my most used tools are a 7,8,10mm sockets, T15 torx, and a plastic clip removal tool. I hate new vehicles. But it pays the bills

😂 as he rolled out to take a run up the road I was thinking "geez his windshield is really cracked" but I forgot it's my cellphone screen. I dropped it on the s shop floor last night!
Lucky kid, most of us had to buy a book for our cars, he gets to work with the guy that basically wrote the book.

What we did on a few LA blocks was drain the pan, pull it, pull the pump and drive the bushing out from the bottom, then check all of the bearing on the crank both mains and push rods to see if anything was damaged from all the metal shavings from the distributor/pump drive bushing.
I love the fact after each shift, it no longer just falls on its face and just cleanly keeps pulling. That alone makes a huge difference!

This is how my 455 Oldsmobile acted from the swap from the 750 rochester to my Edelbrock. Then again with my crusing Edelbrock being swapped out with a big Holley. Nice of you to help him. That look on his face was priceless. Love ya UTG
Of the three carb you mention the best for the olds is in fact the quadrajet if you get it built correctly.
@@ben68442 Im going for a strip toronado. The quadrajet was good when it was stock. With a cam rockers and intake it likes the edelbrock for cruising. The holley just opens it up fully.

Unka Tony, don't forget to remind Austin NOT to beat himself up when he makes mistakes and mucks something up. If he LEARNS something from his mistakes he will GAIN EXPERIENCE! None of us woke up one day and knew all of our wrenching and troubleshooting skills - We gained it a lesson at a time and we become experienced mechanics over the years!
I love his enthusiasm and drive and I love his '65 Sport Fury even more!
I also have, new to me, a 383 powered '65 Sport Fury basket case. The car came with no engine, engine harness, alternator or PS mounts. I wired the thing up right, installed the engine and acquired needed parts through my Mopar friends in our club. I just got it running and driving last Friday. The thing runs like a beast - and that 383 winds up FAST once in the power band!
If he doesn't already, suggest that he buys a Factory service manual (NOT a Chiltons type) for his car. I own one for each of my cars and I could not have done the job without it!

I have one running on my 455 Olds for just cruising. Swap to my holley for the fun.
This has been the longest shipping I've had at 10 days but that's still not bad. It takes post from 140km away from me 12 days sometimes. Not good when it's a specialist appointment letter or something. The best shipping I've ever had was from rockauto and I had it in my hand less than 72hours from ordering it. And I'm getting the carb, fuel line and fittings for 200 less than I could get the carb alone here in nz and that's with shipping included so I'm happy. And saying that, I havent found an 800 edelbrock in stock anywhere in nz anyway. Lol . 2 bit hick part of the world.

It's funny how quick a person can lose the fear of the camera, Austin has really eased up in the 3 videos I've watched him in. As others have said it's great to see a younger guy right into the older cars, good work all around.
I've been regasketing and replacing the timing set and headers on my wifes 80 chevy pickup for the last couple days...i treated the neighbors to an open header serenade this afternoon...start the weekend off right.
Tony, seeing your idea in action - helping local guys sort out their rides - I really like it. At our age, we need to be encouraging those coming up behind us.

I like how the young guy was able to show off some skill too. Having decades of experience is best in 99% of cases, but being able to pull from thousands of other minds and find that obscure stuff that many won't ever see in decades of working on these cars is also pretty handy.

Is that a left hand or right hand channel lock? THESE THINGS ARE IMPORTANT MAN! From a 450 to a 750, even if its an Edy carb, yeah should make him smile.
Since everything worked out it was obviously a SAE channel lock versus a metric one.

This car has brakes, wasn't too sure about the truck.
Now there is a couple of guys who could use a socket set with a wobble drive extension.
And an 18 volt drill/driver.

Yep. It pains me to see guys using wrenches when a battery powered driver will work. I use mine constantly! I'm pretty old school for the most part, but that's one I was happy to start using.
I haven't driven a screw with a drill since discovering the impact driver.

You can look at that two ways. Pulling the motor would have gotten the job done in an afternoon with no outlay for tools.
What was the total cost with shipping on those tools, and how long did it take for them to arrive.

Smarter by spending money on a set of tools you will use one time and not on other parts the car needs 😉 good one
I would have taken the easy route, buying the tools, but that's just me... I'm lazy! I have nothing against anyone who would rather pull the engine though, my hat's off to you guys for being willing to do the work.
@@joshuaryals45 The tools arrived in 2 days, and during that time we put the timing cover back on the car and gave the sealant time to cure so it wouldn’t leak again. The tools, along with the new drive with a new bushing, and expedited shipping with tax came to about 300 dollars, saved me from a weekend of pulling the motor and having to replace the pan and pump gaskets, and I gave the tools to my friend Bill for letting my car sit in his driveway for a week. It was a fair trade and totally worth not having to pull the motor.
Could tell it picked up speed considerably faster just by the time the shifts took place. Good job Austin and Tony. 👍 I like your car.

Tony! There is a choke linkage rod missing on the the throttle side of Edelbrock carb.

Uncle Tony and Thunderhead289 have really inspired me to get my 64 Galaxie 500 with a 352 and autolite 4100 carb running top notch. I'm still running points but I've played with the timing and carb adjustments and now she can easily spin my 215 65 15" tires with a posi and 3.00 rear end gears. The car was never able to do this. Timing and carb adjustments make all the difference in the world.
A 514 would make more!

I ran a set of those Taylor Spiro Pro wires on my 1990 5.0L Mustang for several years, they were very nice quality. Loving the Fury!

My 98 Durango SLT with a 318 , 2bbl throttle body . I put on a throttle body from a 360 , removed the lip and polished , That did make a difference , now with shorty headers and a couple other little things , what a difference that was .

That's about the same result I got when I switched out a 600 Holley for a 780 Thermoquad on my 318. It was like a different engine, it got up and screamed, and pulled much stronger at top end. I assumed the 780 that I pulled straight off a 400 from a Cordoba would be too much and it turned out to be just right. I've had that carb on that engine since 1989, with just one new carb kit in all that time.
