The sun is shining and we are so excited to get outside and start doing some garden work. First up is pruning our deciduous trees. While they are dormant it is a great time to shape and clean them up. We are taking after our maple, birch, beech, and redbuds. Here are our three cutting tools.

After that it is on to taking some lights down from the Jardin Tower and moving some trellises. That was the plan at least, but with the weather being so cold we decided to hold on making any big changes.

Then we change out the hangers for our orb planters. After seeing @HowsItGrowing use a swing swivel for her hanging baskets Eric ordered some for us! Now we can spin the baskets to make watering easier and also make it easier to give all the plants equal sun.

I love pruning, too. I did some a few days ago and have plans for more today. At 23:00, Christopher asked if he should make a cut from the bottom and actually, he was right. To prevent a possible tear, down the trunk as you get closer to finishing the cut, it is advised to make a cut from the bottom. Since the branch he was cutting wasn’t a heavy one, no tearing occurred. Loved the description of the “aroma” of the deer spray! 🤧🥴🤭😂🤣
You are totally correct. If the branch had been any bigger we definitely would have done the safer cuts

Yes! Be brave. Take your time to consider what you want the end result to be and then take after it!
Pruning is my favorite task! For me, it combines art with the long-term strategy of chess.

Love you guys but Christopher you were totally right about flipping the pruning saw and making a slight cut underneath the branch as well so when the branch comes off it doesn't accidentally strip the bark and create and injury
Yes! In this instance the branch wasn’t as heavy as it looked. Anything that could tear and damage the bark we would do the lower cut

Oh my the tension waiting for Eric to agree on the Redbud. The plants below will be much happier and it will still be beautiful.

As long as the deciduous trees are dormant you can get out there and prune!
I am so glad you showed your pruning methods and included us in your thought process. As a single gardener, I am so hesitant to prune, especially since I have no one to collaborate on what needs to go.
I am down to nearly no trees and am on the lookout for replacement varieties. 20 years ago, I planted a crabapple, a hydrangea standard and a thornless Hawthorne in honor of departed family members. The hydrangea split from the weight, the crabapple I neglected too long and it seemed to get blight. The Hawthorne is coming down this year. I used to love its structure, almost pagoda style. But limbing it up over time left just a knob of branches on top and it looks hideous.
Last year, I looked for a 'Jane' magnolia (after my sister), but the garden center claimed it was marginal for our then 4b zone. I wonder if I'll have more success finding one in our new zone 5a.
I just planted some poppy seeds this afternoon! I had small wire baskets from the Dollar Store I secured with landscape staples and broadcast the tiny seeds over their "cages." The ground is still frozen, but my daffodils are poking up already. 😱 Seeing them helped me place the poppies. I covered everything back up with leaves. Contrary to appearances, we still have way too much winter left.
Last year, we had our 3rd highest snowfall on record and this year, I'm told, we got 7".
I use those white corregated tubes on my dwarf apple tree. Snow was so high last year, bunnies ate the bark above it. I lopped off the top since it was no longer viable without the cambium layer to support it. Darned if that tree didn't sprout a new leader and a few other branches. I'll have to see if it can be saved. It looks like it's no longer a dwarf. My redbud leans dramatically and looks Asian themed. We'll see if it will survive. Bunnies chewed a bit on that multi-trunk tree and last year it was LOADED with seed pods.
I have been ordering plants in anticipation of the next gardening season. I've got 4 clematis coming in May from Brushwood Nursery and 4 varieties of lilies (mostly Oriental) from Longwood. Oh, and elephant ears and caladium corms. I'm going to be busy in May.
I am sorry to hear that those plants didn’t make it. Our Jane Magnolia is a favorite, we will be doing some work on the shape after the blooms. There is a lot left of winter for sure, but so much to look forward to!

Well, I'm not the same gardener I was 20 years ago. Back then, I thought you just planted trees and shrubs and that was it.
I've learned so much from UA-camrs such as you guys.
It has been incredible to see how many styles are out there. So much to learn

Pruning is on this coming weekend's schedule. I didn't think I was conservative with pruning until I saw Ole Edward Scissor Hands over there 😂 I also didn't think about pruning my Japanese maple. I have a shorter variety and didn't even think about the air flow. I should take a look to see if I need to reconsider that. I just started watching your videos a couple of weeks ago and I'm almost caught up.

Watching you both trim the redbud was so stressful….i think you should have left the lower branches. The first branch made sense..I think the canopy is too high now. I still love your garden tho-absolutely beautiful!❤🌳🌲
Knowing how fast that redbud grows I'm not worried about losing that much of the tree. The three branches really didn't connect to the top canopy.

Talk abt motivating me!!!! Im doin it and TODAY. I have 4 crabapple trees that desperately need me to free them up. I put it off every year but only because our winters leave so much snow that I can’t get to them. This year, todays high is 55 degrees…in January, yay me!!! Thanks guys!!!

We have been so lucky to have good weather in 6b to do pruning now. Ours is finished and we have moved on to building a new bog pond addition to the koi pond, but it’s 12 degrees today!

Btw I hate the smell of bobbex. I used it last year and the deer still came late spring to feast on “deer resistant” shrubs. Also it attracted all the neighborhood cats/dogs if you’re into that lol. I’m making peace with the deer this year. ☮️

We are going to enjoy the blooms and then do a big prune. Before it gets too big we want to create a three trunk tree.

Do deer protection sleeves on those trees? Bucks tear up our young trees if exposed. I missed two & they ripped the side off.
The did that to a bald cypress so we plants shrubs near the base

Good morning! It felt so nice to get outside and trim some trees. Now just a few more weeks until we can start addressing hydrangeas
@@growformegardening I was thinking I might tackle our panicle type hydrangeas this weekend, we have a border of standard Limelight hydrangeas that get to be 12 feet, every year I prune them drastically, they are gorgeous. I can not believe this weird weather we are having this winter it will be in the 60's on Saturday, this morning after I watched your video I went to check on my helleborus and they are in full bloom, the ones in the woodland garden are not. This is the first time they are this early, Christopher and Eric I am an avid gardener but my husband said you guys are keeping me on my toes😂more than ever.

That is a Scentsation Honeysuckle and we absolutely recommend it. This is the first season on that tower and we are thinking about adding a clematis too!

Did you ruff the roots up or put them in the hole as it came out of the container? I am in zone 6b St. Louis, Mo
I believe they are usually late winter. We saw some recently. We don’t touch the roots because they are generally a solid mass in the can! We plant them outside as soon as as the soil is workable.
I'm curious as to why you're not making "flush cuts" when you're pruning?
We always try to avoid cutting into the collar of the branch. Some of the branches you saw us prune, were at awkward angles, and it made it really tough to get a cleaner cut.!!
Talking through the thought process is helpful. Curious about the zone/ climate? First time seeing your channel. Looks cold but also lush and wet.

We are in zone 5b/6a upstate New York. We are in a valley at the meeting point of the Catskills, Berkshires, and Adirondak moutains.
Question- i planted new little lime punch hydrangeas last summer. I know they bloom on new wood but i am terrified to prune🤣 should i prune now or should i wait until late winter/early spring next yr for stronger stems?
You have lots of time…in the next few weeks we are going to post our step by step process of pruning panicles! No worries at all

You two need a Stihl 4” chainsaw for these chores. Makes for a quick job. And yes, I said 4 INCH chainsaw. I love, love, love mine.

As far as larger branches, it cuts like butter…😮
They also have hedge shears for smaller jobs offering two different blades. I use mine for fall cleanup. Saves the wrists & hands 😂

Cry. Haha. Thet are really hard. We use little wire cloches to cover small things until they are too big to be ruined. Sprays help a little
Buy yourself a 6inch mini chainsaw. Battery powered and very handy..
It was on my list to get one last year but we didn't think we would end up needing it. Welllllll come to find out we really do. haha
