Jon Anderson is the best prog album of 2024 but please don't forget that the Pineapple Thief had a great album in 2024. Happy Christmas! I look forward to more videos in 2025
Jon Anderson and Band Geeks IS a surprise but should not be. These unknown and extremely talented Geeks showcase their desire to play in Classic Anderson Yes form with every track on this album. I was not a life-long Yes fan, but this album shows cases music that is like ear candy thru and thru!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Great list! A few that didn’t make your list but are in my top ten include: IZZ - Collapse the Wave, Albion - Lakesongs of Elbid, Circe Link and Christian Nesmith - Arcana, and my pick for best album of the year - Barock Project - Time Voyager.
I am very glad I spotted this review (Now subscribed). I have just started with Messenger's Quest by Triton Project which is absolutely amazing. Thanks for these recommendations.
Thank you for your list. Jon Anderson has certainly made an impact with this Yes-esque album, as it’s at the top end of most best of lists this year. I haven’t bought it but it’s on my to buy list. Have you heard Jupiter Fungus as yet, I’m sure it would make your list certainly a throwback to the 70s from this Greek duo.
Both Gilmour and Anderson have released beautiful albums this year. Just got a copy of Luck And Strange today in fact. Enjoying it very much. Merry Christmas!
Thanks for this year-end best-of list. I've been checking out Meer's new one this evening. I've really enjoyed The Smile's WALL OF EYES album this year - purchased on vinyl upon release. Also, I finally bought David Gilmour's new one and am enjoying most of it. Thanks again. Wishing you and your family a well-deserved wonderful Christmas.
Some honourable mentions :) Projekt Gemineye with 2 releases - What’s on your mind & Canada: stories & legends. They can be found on Bandcamp. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Thanks for the quality output you’ve made this year. Looking forward to what is installed for 2025. Brandon 🇦🇺
One cool list, Barry. I'd add Geordie Greep's 'The New Sound'. There's a couple on your list I've yet to dive into: Meer and Triton (sp?). Merry Christmas!
My top prog album for 2024 is Jupiter Fungus and their album Electric Garden. Has been receiving rave reviews so for those who like flute driven, mainly instrumental music, it is well worth a listen. Heavy with Tull / Focus influences and the 4th and final track references Pink Floyd's Animal era material.
Merry Prog Christmas Barry from a very hot Cape Town. 32deg. I trust your reviews so went straight to number one and watched Jon Anderson on the Yuletubes..rather good, and very much like a reborn Yes. His band are very tight. Thanks for your great content and unique style.
Thanks for the interesting video. Never heard of Meer before and managed to get hold of their album after your review, it is brilliant, no wonder it made your list. P.S. As someone else mentioned The Pineapple Thief ‘It Leads to This’ album is also one of the year’s best.
For me Jordan Rudess - Permission to Fly was my absolute nr. 1 album for 2024. 1. Jordan Rudess - Permission To Fly 2. Opeth - The Last Will And Testament 3. Frost* - Life In The Wires 4. The Smashing Pumpkins - Aghori Mhori Mei 5. Neal Morse and the Resonance - No Hill For A Climber 6. Transatlantic - Live at Morsefest 2022 7. Kyros - Mannequin 8. The Smile - Wall Of Eyes 9. Neal Morse - The Restoration, Joseph pt. 2 10. Bruce Dickinson - The Mandrake Project 11. Wilson & Wakeman - Can We Leave The Light On Longer?
Posted on X a few days ago that if you told me on 1/1/2024 the best prog album of the year would be Jon and the Band Geeks I'd have booked you a room at the funny farm. Very well deserved.
Excellent list. Did you happen to hear “Arcana” by Circe Link & Christian Nesmith. If not, I highly recommend it as it is my personal choice for album of the year.
Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks TRUE -- Absolutely the best prog of 2024, at least that I've heard. Better than anything from Steve Howe and company ever. This is the way new YES music should sound, lyrics and all.
Got the Hackett, Gilmour and Anderson albums; Hackett is okay, the other two are great, and the Anderson one is one of my top 3 albums across all genres this year.
🏆 Personal Top 10, 2024 so far: 1. Opeth - The Last Will and Testament 🥇 2. Iotunn - Kinship🥈 3. Deep Limbic System - Katharsi🥉 4. Geordie Greep - The New Sound 5. Frost* - Life in the Wires 5. Beardfish - Songs for Beating Hearts 6. SLIFT - Illion 7. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Of the Last Human Being 8. Weather Systems - Ocean Without a Shore 9. Blood Incantation - The Absolute Elsewhere 10. Cloud People - Simulacra
Blood incantation-absolute elsewhere Opeth-the last will Anciients-beyond the reach of the Sun The smile-wall of eyes/cutouts Godspeed you black emporor-no title as of....
Jeff Beck super guitarist to end all super guitarists! He's famous for renowned solos like....er....( crickets) And acclaimed riffs like, um.... ( crickets) And classic songs like....oh he did Hi Ho Silver Lining!
Opeth for me, hands down. And it actually IS progressive, unlike most of the albums listed here. I mean, what's proggy about the (excellent) 'Luck and Strange', for an example.
A lot of older prog music fans would say with King Crimson's album In the Court of the Crimson King. 1969 if I am not mistaken. I got this album the minute it came out - had never heard anything like it previously.
Prog rock is stuck in a style now, it's lost it's original meaning. With the exception of The Smile there is absolutely nothing progressive on this list, it's all stuck in the past. There should also be two The Smile albums on the list and Cutouts is the best one. Beardfish isn't bad but the rest, meh and Jon Anderson's is Yes by numbers or AI music, awful. Still, each to their own. Personally, I'm not stuck in 1977. Move on.
Always love these lists of bands I've never heard of. A real serendipitous cornucopia of delight.
Wow, thank you !! We're honored 🥰Merry Christmas 🌲
Merry Christmas to you too..
Vinyl release please 🙏
Jon Anderson is the best prog album of 2024 but please don't forget that the Pineapple Thief had a great album in 2024. Happy Christmas! I look forward to more videos in 2025
I’m currently listening to Wheels within Wheels by Meer. I’ve listened to a few tracks so far, I’m enjoying it. A solid 7/10

Merry Christmas!!! Jon and The Band Geeks get my vote for AOTY. TRUE is simply INCREDIBLE❣️❣️❣️🎵🎼🎶☮️👍😎

Progtastic!!! Jon Anderson and the Band Geeks were a delight in concert this year.
Thank you for your list. Jon Anderson has certainly made an impact with this Yes-esque album, as it’s at the top end of most best of lists this year. I haven’t bought it but it’s on my to buy list. Merry Xmas to this fine fellow who I find rather educational. Nick

True!!👍☮️👑🐍🙏😎
Thanks!
Merry Christmas Barry!
I like your 2024 prog list. Agree from 5 to 1. In my opinion, Pineapple Thief must be here...
Thanks for all your work over 2024. Have a nice Christmas (sounds like an order).
One cool list, Barry. I'd add Geordie Greep's 'The New Sound'. There's a couple on your list I've yet to dive into: Meer and Triton (sp?). Merry Christmas!

Jon and the Geeks continue to deliver progtastic fun. Still on heavy rotation in the Exton household.
Merry Prog Christmas Barry from a very hot Cape Town. 32deg. I trust your reviews so went straight to number one and watched Jon Anderson on the Yuletubes..rather good, and very much like a reborn Yes. His band are very tight. Thanks for your great content and unique style.
A great review and listing. Many thanks, Barry, and keep up the great work, especially your interviews
Good to see Jon Anderson do so well. I've not heard any of the other albums, but no doubt they're all well worth listening to. Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄
Thanks for the interesting video. Never heard of Meer before and managed to get hold of their album after your review, it is brilliant, no wonder it made your list. P.S. As someone else mentioned The Pineapple Thief ‘It Leads to This’ album is also one of the year’s best.
What an interesting collection of the new and the familiar. Lots to chew on now that the eating season is over.
Merry Christmas to you and thanks.
Thank you too
Thank you for your content Barry have great Christmas 🎄
Good to see Steve Hackett here. His live show was off the scale brilliant. However, Jon Anderson is a worthy winner. Live shows soon, please.
Have to admit I’m a bit biased towards The new Anderson record. He gets points for longevity. But no denying it is a great record.
Great choice Barry. Jon Anderson wins it hands down for me. Hope he treats us to some live dates next year. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
I understand that he’s announced that he’s releasing a new live album of Yes songs next year so hopefully he will do some concerts to promote that
Barock Project -Time Voyager
-Honorable Mention
Thank you and Merry Christmas to you and yours!
For me Jordan Rudess - Permission to Fly was my absolute nr. 1 album for 2024.
1. Jordan Rudess - Permission To Fly
2. Opeth - The Last Will And Testament
3. Frost* - Life In The Wires
4. The Smashing Pumpkins - Aghori Mhori Mei
5. Neal Morse and the Resonance - No Hill For A Climber
6. Transatlantic - Live at Morsefest 2022
7. Kyros - Mannequin
8. The Smile - Wall Of Eyes
9. Neal Morse - The Restoration, Joseph pt. 2
10. Bruce Dickinson - The Mandrake Project
11. Wilson & Wakeman - Can We Leave The Light On Longer?
Frost - Life in the Wires is a pretty spectacular album and topped my list.
Have you heard the Magick Brother & Mystic Sister Tarot albums? Really good stuff.
Hello really like your interviews! I have been at it for almost a year now
Glad you like them!
Yes I have really enjoyed them Hard to reach the A list stars like a tony banks or a jon anderson
Thanks Barry. Great list. Could of added Jupiter Fungus
Are you sure that isn't an ailment?
Time Voyager by Barock Project was my favourite.
Dawn of Oberon by Tusmørke and The Story of Mr. Bogd, Part 1 by Ritual are my favorite prog entries of 2024.
Thank you for being so forgiving to the French 😂
And Thank you for your excellent work.
Keep well.
Pierre
No worries! Happy new year to you.

Dear Barry,
Let me wish you a very Merry Christmas.
Check the band Lizzard. Great modern prog rock. I really enjoyed their new album Mesh.
Blood incantation-absolute elsewhere
Opeth-the last will
Anciients-beyond the reach of the Sun
The smile-wall of eyes/cutouts
Godspeed you black emporor-no title as of....
Jeff Beck super guitarist to end all super guitarists!

It seems a lot of people are on board with Jon. I’m another one. It’s just a great album.
Opeth
How can Frost* be not in there?!?
( ironic yet just furor..😜)
Opeth for me, hands down. And it actually IS progressive, unlike most of the albums listed here. I mean, what's proggy about the (excellent) 'Luck and Strange', for an example.
You forgot about The Story of Mr Bogd Part One by Ritual.
The best prog album of 2024 imho.
I think Rosalie Cunningham's album was exceptional though maybe not as prog as her first two. She does get a great dig in at Wetherspoons though!
Do you know any new prog made by younger folk? A lot of these guys have been around for a while.
Geordie Greep 'The New Sound'. He's 25, frontman for Black Midi (if they ever reform) also proggy.
@@TractorCountdown Yeah I know him/them, good stuff
A good list! I invite you to check out Emerald City Council, if you haven’t already.
🧙
Where did Prog started? Great Britain?
A lot of older prog music fans would say with King Crimson's album In the Court of the Crimson King. 1969 if I am not mistaken. I got this album the minute it came out - had never heard anything like it previously.
No Frost*?
Alright
Frank Zappa played a bicycle on the Steve Allen Show in 1963. Just sayin'.
Progmass?
A new entry into the OED.
Happy Holidays and Peace on Earth.

First
Quick,run and tell your mummy
If you told me in 1974 that the best prog album in 2024 would be Jon Anderson's I would probably laugh (or take you to a good mental asylum)
That Jon & Band Geeks album sounds like an AI Yes - cannot listen to it.
You look a pillock in that hat.
Tis the season
