@@shannonmitchell8515 Exactly. Romeo bridges the neo-classical and progressive paths of Petrucci and Malmsteen, while also having extremely tasteful playing and a BADASS use of groove metal elements as well. An ultimate guitar player and musician for sure.
Michael Romeo brings in elements of Shawn Lane into his playing. There is even a nod to Holdsworth in this track during one of the interlude solos. He to me is what I wished Yngwie had become musically. So many times, a great guitarist comes on the scene, then stops developing. Check out his work on his two War of the Worlds solo albums. He is an amazing composer as well.
This album is one of the best albums ever, with a lot of varied and fun tracks. This is actually one of the least accessible ones. 'Out of the ashes' is my favorite one. Super fun and almost like classical music in parts.
I seriously cringed at the thought of mentioning Metallica in the same musical realm or sound as Symphony X. Eeeek!! Alas, I am extremely happy you're checking Symphony X out, finally! Echoing the comments, you must listen to The Odyssey. It's not an outdated sound, you're just discovering new music. Cheers.
I felt the same way haha. I understand making the comparison as a learning listener of the genre. But yeah, Metallica are children compared to Symphony X. Musically, lyrically, in terms of skill; they pale in comparison to Symphony X in every measurable regard. Metallica are a Thrash band. Symphony X are top level musicians.
Sounds to me that you need to diversify a bit more outside the scope of Metallica or Dream Theater. The comparison to DT is a bit more understandable in terms of sheer chops, but musically, they are quite different. Other bands you might want to explore are Fates Warning, Pain of Salvation, Circus Maximus, Haken. Metallica couldn't carry water for this band. And while I love Dream Theater, James LaBrie has been their weak spot for years now. Russell Allen is a pure beast of a vocalist with many colors to his voice.
Saying James Labrie and Russell Allen sound the same is absolutely hilarious. The Odyssey is a true masterpiece, as many have already posted. Another gorgeous and shorter song is Paradise Lost.
@Drew Fortune, I own all Symphony X album, when you listen to a song from them you must think of it like an adventure, like watching a movie. You we're right when you said it's like a cut scene lol
Comparing Russell Allen to Hetfield and LaBrie is like comparing Michael Romeo to Kirk Hammet. I mean, Russells' vocal abilities are not from this world. Both Hetfield and LaBrie are good vocalists, but not even close to Russell.
You started off with one of their oldest epics which is a really good move on your part. As others have suggested, I'd recommend "The Odyssey" and then "Revelation" or anything from the PARADISE LOST album which is darker sounding and more new age sounding. You're definitely in for a treat with this band.

Even putting Symphony X and Metallica in the same sentence is an insult to Symphony X. There isn't a single member of Metallica that could even play this.
As for the comparisons, it's easy to hear Symphony X as Metallica meets Dream Theater. DT and SX came about around the same time so they were contemporaries of each other. Symphony X was about 4 years later. Not to say they weren't influenced by DT but I think there's more inspiration drawn from bands like Rush, Kansas, Black Sabbath, and Dio. I know Michael Romeo and Russell Allen are heavily influenced by classical composers so there's that as well.
James LaBrie is my favorite singer, but Sir Russell Allen is a beast! I'd say the band's sound is heavily influenced by classics like Kansas and Queen, but hey, it's been more than 20 years since this was recorded, 90's Prog Metal was just building its own sound. Maybe the latest Symphony X material it will be a better aproach to you. if you're gonna give SX another chance, try Serpent's Kiss - just 5.00 minutes long song - before going with another epic 20 minute piece. If you feel that sound it's more for you, only then go with The Odyssey.
Symphony X is classic! You'll probably like their newer stuff a lot more. OT: Would love to see you collaborate (more) with METALBIRB. Since you both love prog metal, maybe react to Ayreon - 'The Day That The World Breaks Down' together? You will be pleasantly surprised! Hint: Russell Allen (Symphony X) and James LaBrie (Dream Theater) are both featured on it, next to 9 (!) other singers.
So glad to see you finally do this one. My favorite band, truly next level musicianship and composition. Of course, everyone will recommend The Odyssey, and rightfully so, it's stunningly beautiful.
Symphony X guitarrist has a recording studio in his house... The albums The Odyssey, Paradise Lost, Iconoclast and Underworld were fully recorded in that studio and are (arguably) a lot better produced than the previous ones...
Agree... But only because Labrie's voice died a long time ago. Which is a huge shame. In the early 90s Labrie held his own. Find some early footage. Top class. But yeah, Allen has just maintained a high level of performance this whole time. Only seen them live once. It was about 4 years ago. Was awesome!
@@wilko6679 I mean, it was one thing hearing Bruce Dickinson slip a notch, but the only thing his singing lost was long phrases shortening, whereas if you listen to some of LaBrie's performances - I mean, take the live video for Octavarium (the one everyone's reacting to): Jordan's intro is majestic, then Petrucci and Myoung come in and it all sounds incredible. Then LaBrie sings in his middle range, which there's totally nothing wrong with - but then he goes into the "as far as I can say" part and it just kills the mood as if I got stabbed in my ear with a screwdriver. He's a brilliant writer, that's for sure, but he had to either put DT's sound first or his own. I know which he picked.
This is a very old and - kind of - experimental song from early in their career (1997 !! More than 23 years ago. At this point, none of Avenged Sevenfold or Dream Theater's "Metropolis part II" album existed). Back in the time they didn't have made any concert yet and they were considered like a nerdy "studio band". I think they became more mature between "The new mythology suite" and "The Odyssey" albums (in other words between 2000-2002). The eponymous song "The Odyssey" is a must listen, and it is (at least at a production level) two levels above the Divine Wings epic song that you listened here. Also they made a couple of way more "modern sounding" and testosteronous albums between 2007 and 2011. I don't consider their last 2015 album as good as the two previous ones. Happy Christmas to you too ;) (Sorry for my English I'm French)
Symphony x is one of those bands like dream theater that you can listen a 20 minute song without getting bored, cause it's never the same it always changes, these bands are way too complex to listen for someone that doesn't understand music very well, lots of sounds but in a beautiful armony, now i'm 34 and i've been listening metal since i was 13, i found DT and symphony x when i was 15 and i can say that are the 2 most beautiful bands for me, 15:48 in your video...the most lethal part of the song
When I accidentally illegally downloaded this album on live wire my 12 year old mind couldn't understand how such a band could exist and I had never heard of them. They were everything I loved in music and more. This album straight up changed my life. I've been listening to them for well 18 years now lol. I used to play this album on repeat playing diablo 2 on pc. And look at that with d2r releasing time to spam this album again except this time I have their entire discography. :) Cheers to the best thing to come out of New Jersey.
Symphony X is amazing!! I hate how they always get compared to DT but similar genres!! They have a lot of great songs you should check out!! Two of my favorites are “Inferno ( Unleash the Fire)” and “Of sins and Shadows”
@I Can't Think Of A Good Name So This Must Suffice ahh really!! That’s what makes music unique. Not everyone has the same taste.. those were the first two songs I heard from X. 🤘🏻
@DrewFortune97 Thank you very much for your review of this great band. The fun thing about this band is that it is actually not Trash Metal, neither is Folk or Power Metal. It is progressive metal, and like a good progressive metal band, they try to tell a story in every song. So you will see different elements in every song they wrote: different drums, different guitars, bass, and even vocal style. This song is about (I believe) the Exodus; however, the story is told from Lucifer's perspective. It tells his rise and fall. That is why they sing so aggressively at times. These different guitar riff sections are part of the story, like a fight between good and evil, which eventually good prevails - hence the end of the music being a little slower. Well, hope you like it =)
Symphony X went more guitar driven from The Odyssey onward. As you will have seen already, the title track from the aforementioned album is a must, then definitely check out The Accolades 1&2, The Bird/Serpent War leading into Egypt from V: The New Mythology album, Eve of Seduction, When All Is Lost and many more... Sir Russell Allen is a beast of a vocalist! I would also recommend checking out Dawn of a Million Souls from the Ayreon album Flight of the Migrator album where Russell and Michael Romeo both feature. Romeo plays an insane solo which made Ayreon head honcho Arjen Lucassen jealous, lol!
The Odyssey by these guys is amazing also. Basically the same type of song, but more epic and not so "all over the place". The production is also a lot better and not outdated as you called it :) Everything from the Paradise Lost album is also gold and a lot more accessible
Symphony X like Metallica Really, thats like saying every time you listen to Guthrie Govan or Andy james or Ron Thal play guitar you here Kirk Hammett.
Symphony X is pretty much heavier DT with some epic and neoclassical stuff mixed in. They have different albums and styles, some more prog, some heavier. Michael Romeo is always considered a top tier guitar player but people don't often talk about how good a composer he is. He basically writes everything himself, including orchestrations. Russell Allen is a vocal beast, extremely diverse and very consistent in live performances. If you like more the prog stuff than the heavy, I'd recommend Egypt next. If you wanna hear how heavy they can get, go for Domination
Yeah, you're right! It is my first time listening to this song as well, and I cannot help but think it's really some kind of Metallica and Dream Theater mashup) And some Ayreon as well - due to this singer participating in Ayreon occasionally, I guess) So yeah, this is a masterpiece, greatly done, but after DT and Metallica it sounds kinda secondary, frankly speaking. Great, but I heard it all somewhere already)
I think russel allen has a really more grasper voice than labrie. But i can relate to your reaction. Thats outdated, but brilliant. For me, its nostalgia. I've been listening to symphony x since im 12. Before ive even knew what Dream Theater is. So im a lot biased. Great reaction. Subscribing.
Iconoclast is one of my favorites from them. Devin Townsend and Symphony X are my two all time favorite bands. ❤ Sir Russ is ✨divine✨ at the end of this one.
The main guitarist is influenced by Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Rush, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, as well as neo classical shredders like Uli Jon Roth and Yngwie Malmsteem. While Symphony X and Dream Theater were formed around the same time, just a couple years difference.

If you wanna hear how heavy they can get, go for Domination
Jeez... dude sees no difference between Labrie's and Allen's vocals! Such a sacrilege!
Yeah, you're right! It is my first time listening to this song as well, and I cannot help but think it's really some kind of Metallica and Dream Theater mashup) And some Ayreon as well - due to this singer participating in Ayreon occasionally, I guess)
So yeah, this is a masterpiece, greatly done, but after DT and Metallica it sounds kinda secondary, frankly speaking. Great, but I heard it all somewhere already)
pls listen to more !
How does the keyboard solo sound like Metallica??
15:49... La misma reacción que tengo yo cuando llego a esa parte jaja
You should listen to "To Hell and Back" from them
It's not "trash" metal, it's "Thrash" Metal. But, very cool video! Symphony X is one of the best in the business. Thanks for reviewing.
Now that you say it, it kinda sounds like a collab, but I have that voice and guitar sound so deep in my head that for me is just Symphony X
Symphony X the best band in the world 🇬🇧🤘
Shoutout to based brandon
Evolution
Rediscovery parts I-II
Iconoclast is one of my favorites from them. Devin Townsend and Symphony X are my two all time favorite bands. ❤ Sir Russ is ✨divine✨ at the end of this one.
What headphones do you use?
The main guitarist is influenced by Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Rush, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, as well as neo classical shredders like Uli Jon Roth and Yngwie Malmsteem. While Symphony X and Dream Theater were formed around the same time, just a couple years difference.
It truly is a master piece surpassing anything DT has made imo.
one A change of seasons destroys all the tasteless shit Symphony X
@@chegevara8896 Nah, La Bries' voice is just insufferable in the long run
@@jamiethomas3122 "insufferable" lol, what?
Unlike Allen's generic, sterile vocal style (who stubbornly tries to sound like Dio), LaBrie has a recognizable timbre and knows how to convey emotions
@@chegevara8896 Allen is levels above Dio and Labrie, with a far bigger range than the monotone whiney Labrie
Symphony X - When All is Lost 🤝👌
The TDWOT álbum is a fully masterpiece
