"A Fool's Paradise" from their album V: The New Mythology Suite is great. It incorporates some excerpts from Bach's Harpsichord Concerto in D Minor in the neoclassical section. Basically all of their stuff from The Odyssey and before have more neoclassical influence. Paradise Lost onward not so much, but still great music. Michael Romeo's solo stuff is also really good, with his most recent album War of the Worlds. "Djinn" is probably my favorite track from there. Hope to see some videos from you on some of these songs, but more importantly, I hope you enjoy them!

Russell Allen is my favorite male vocalist. Symphony X is criminally underexposed on YT, thank you for doing one of their tunes! Most of their best stuff is audio only because they've been around a long time!
Their "symphonic" comes from keyboards imitating symphonies, mainly, but that doesn't make the songs any less. Some suggestions for Symphony X:
The Odyssey (Note: this song is 24m long, and there's no video really, only album art, but I highly recommend it fwiw) - ua-cam.com/video/MaN3pwBsRf8/v-deo.html
The Damnation Game (~6m, album art) - ua-cam.com/video/-uRJcOVaZR4/v-deo.html
Through the Looking Glass (13m long, album art) - ua-cam.com/video/oka6qscEQyQ/v-deo.html
    Serpent's Kiss (5m, an actual video!) - ua-cam.com/video/V8gA1ooxw0I/v-deo.html

This song makes sense in the context of the full album but is a very "straight to the point" one. I strongly recommend an older song by them called Egypt. They have a lot of proggier songs that truly display the band's full potential. Please do another one by Symphony X! Maybe do a poll... people love recommending The Odyssey, but it's a 24 minute monster that pretty much changes all the time.

Huge Symphony X fan, love this song. Russel Allen changed his vocal style to compliment Michael Romeo guitar work on this album that's why some fans don't like it, I think it's awesome. However, on the older stuff Russel Allen really showcases his vocals. King of Terrors or Inferno (Unleash the fire ). Do I have any votes? They have two epics, The Divine Wings of Tragedy and The Odyssey. I think you would appreciate either, they're like musical journeys. My favorite band. Hands down. Barring their first album with a less than stellar singer, they are one of the very few bands I know where I can put their whole catalog on shuffle and never skip a bad apple...because there aren’t any. Keep going!

I'm absolutely elated that you reviewed one of my favorite bands of all time and seem to be just as enthralled with them as I am! I see that you've done other videos of them, I'll have to watch those too. It's always interesting to hear your analysis. I would have liked to hear what you thought about how the vocals fit with the rest of the song. Honestly this is one of my favorite songs by them, it's like ear candy. 😍
Some other bands I think you should check out:
    * Mandroid Echostar- They've been compared to Protest the Hero as well as Coheed and Cambria but I think they really stand out on their own. They definitely have elements in common with both of those bands. Something about the lead singer's voice feels so unique to me, yeah it's Claudio-esque but ...not sure how to describe it, would love to hear your thoughts on the lead singer's voice! (Michael Ciccia).
    * Ihlo- specifically the song Reanimate. Very interesting song.
*Scar Symmetry- I've loved this band since high school. They've changed a lot, so I recommend listening to their older albums that had the singer Christian Alvestam. Symmetric in Design, Pitch Black Progress, and Holographic Universe.
*Skindred- They're Regga metal. Definitely need to listen to them!

I've only recently got into Symphony X (about 2 years now I'd say). I have never heard or seen any guitar player play like Michael Romeo does. I'm a 13+ yr guitarist and i actually think he is more exciting to watch than hear because he is just so precise and smooth, his fingers look like there is no effort involved at all, like they are just floating.

Romeo is insane- and never really gets put in the JP category. I always loved the Odyssey and then Paradise Lost as a great ballad-esq song.

I was lucky enough to see Symphony X and Dream Theater both live within the span of three weeks of one another (2018). Mike Romeo is a very good guitarist and writes the absolute best riffs, but his live performance was not as polished as he is in the studio. He definitely flubbed a few of the more technical passages during the set.
I don't think John Petrucci missed a single note through the whole set with DT. That man must practice relentlessly. It was amazing to witness. The thing is, even though the DT show was more technically perfect from a musical standpoint, I had a lot more fun at the Symphony X concert. Their stage presence conveyed more passion and felt more true to the music.

@@208414 I saw SX on their paradise lost tour. They played the Odyssey as their Encore, that was INSANE. I've seen JP 2x on different G3 tours (but not with DT), and those were fun concerts.

Usually the guys that come down on the JP side like his tone better. Overall I think Romeo is technically better although really their styles are quite different. I have stood right in front of him and his playing is effortless. Petrucci gets a bit harsh with his pick at times, but they both are insanely good guitarists. It is really personal choice in the end.

Being a huge Dream Theater fan I would argue that Symphony X is hugely under appreciated and every bit as talented as DT.I would also add that this album is better that anything DT has done since Portnoy left the band. Not hating on the brilliant Mike Mangini but they just aren’t the same band.

For some reason this symphony x reaction came out of nowhere and I'm so happy to see them showcased here. If you're looking to hear their symphonic and prog influences, here are some suggestions. The 2000 concept album "V" is itself a long-form composition containing orchestral-sounding instrumentation themed according to the setting and story of the album; it's very much a symphony in style and format, with each song treated as a movement. If not listening to its entirety, songs from it I'd suggest listening to include Evolution, Fallen, Egypt, Lacrymosa, and The New Mythology. Some other suggestions for songs with strong symphonic/prog elements are Candlelight Fantasia, Masquerade, Lady of the Snow, The Relic, Sea of Lies, The Edge of Forever, and Through the Looking Glass. Awwwright!
