    Everytime I see royal wedding footage I think of that South Park episode.
    "And now the scraping off of the pudding. Isn't she beautiful, scraping off the pudding with the grace of a butterfly. She rubs the pudding on her face. The prince now attempting to remove one of the princess's arms. As is of course the tradition. The princess screaming with pain. Everyone watching with anticipation. And the arm is off! Things are back to normal here in Canada. Time-honored traditions are once again-yehhss, the prince is sticking the princess's arm up his ass. There it goes. He's really making a good go of it. What a glorious day for Canada, and therefore of course, the world."

    Quick point about the paintings/buildings/illiquid assets. The Vatican has similar artworks but lists them as being worth 1 dollar because they can never be actually sold as no one wants to go down as the pontiff who got rid of mutli-hundred years old sculptures.

      Savile never escaped prosecution due to police failing to investigate formerly lodged allegations by victims, or by a local CPS "forgetting" to forward a file to London. Former Labour MP Greville Janner escaped prosecution 3 times (one being for having abused an 8 or 9 year old boy with the notorious paeophile Frank Beck) due to suspicious 'incompetence' from the police or CPS, before he died when a "trial of the facts" had just begun, over 30 men had submitted formal complaints to the police about being abused by Janner, most of them whilst they were in children's care homes. The media, particular the Times, Telegraph, and BBC, have frequently ran propaganda pieces claiming he is a victim of false allegations by either antisemitic or money hungry liars. It's disgusting. Janner should be the default example of the elite getting away with the most hideous crimes, but most people don't know just how damning the evidence against him is.

Like security and renovations of historical buildings that are used by royal family. The same goes for presumed indirect profits from tourism, France gets far more tourists and make much more money from them then UK and they dont have monarchs. Not entirely true regarding the executive powers of the monarch never having been used independently since 1834. During the constitutional crisis of 1911, the King refused to accept the resignation of the Prime Minister, thus forcing him to continue in office without the support of Parliament.
    The 'transition into constitutional monarchy' emphatically did *not* begin in the 19th century, but in the 17th, with the Restoration. Some might argue it began with Magna Carta.

    I'm American and, thus, have no stake in the British monarchy, but I find Princess Anne a far more compelling figure than Charles. I got to meet her when I was a teenager in the mid-1980s. My mom worked for a US company that was, at the time, part-owned by the royal family. Princess Anne came to visit, during which the company organized a large cookout; all the employees and their families were invited. We were instructed not to approach Princess Anne, that she would approach us if she wanted to interact. There were several hundred people in attendance, and my small group of school friends and I thought she'd never want to speak to a bunch of kids. So, myself and about 6-7 of my friends were just standing around talking. Princess Anne walks up and starts talking to us, but I was so awe-struck that I couldn't form a response. One of my friends answered her question, and I just stood there looking like an idiot. I remember thinking that she was so poised and elegant, the kind of poise and elegance that I could never hope to achieve, but she seemed very kind and sincerely interested.

This is not to advocate anything but, rather, pointing out that working out a 'cost/benefit' hinges upon who gets what in the divorce and 'the people who claimed to be Divinely Chosen might have held unreasonable negotiating power and maybe shouldn't just get to keep literally everything' isn't exactly a legally untenable position.

    The UK benefits substantially from the monarchy because of the income on the Crown Estate. Since 1760, the net income of it has been surrendered to the British treasury, and it amounts to approximately 1.6 Billion pounds. If the U.K became a republic that would end and the Royal Family would retain that income. So it more than offsets any payments by the U.K to them. Then thrown in the tourist dollars and they're a substantial win.
    So yes it is kind of weird, but it is enormously profitable to U.K citizens.

      Versailles is an unequal comparison - it's grand and ostentatious - and very, very expensive. Versailles budget is over €100M per year - that's almost 3 times the amount spent on the entire UK monarchy just to keep one building tidy. Buckingham Palace is, to be honest, nothing special as a building - it's grey, dull, and the interior is bland. It brings special unique appeal though because it has a living connection to an active monarchy - it's part of a real, ongoing story. It's not just yet another dusty forgotten chateau which Europe has about 10,000 of already.

    You fail to identify the most important role that the Monarchy actually has - it safeguard our democracy and acts as a counter balance to Parliament. There is a reason why the Armed Forces swear allegiance to the Monarch and not the Government or the people. It separates power to an apolitical organisation where the leader doesn't strive for power (unlike parliament). It has contributed to a relatively stable system of Government for 100s of years. In turn the Monarch is constrained by Parliament (the people) in a very clever counterbalance.

    When I was younger I was very pro-monarchy. I enjoyed the pomp and and I think it gave the country a lot of prestige and historical weight. But the older I get the less I feel that way. I think the real breaking point has been seeing William and Harry become husbands and parents, and with all the media attention on them and their families and the well-publicised conflicts I've come to the conclusion that royalty is actually pretty bad *for them*. I mean, there are a lot of constitutional and ideological points to make for or against the monarchy, but on a human level I think they and we would all be a lot happier if we just let them quietly sit things out and leave statecraft and politics to people who choose to be there at the top. At least the people we elect to rule over us clearly deserve our scorn and hatred, because only a real psychopath would ever run for office.

    • @kapparomeo
      @kapparomeo 4 роки тому +5

      If you're worried about how "real psychopaths run for office" though, monarchy is actually beneficial in that respect. It's a check on ambition - even the most cynical and self-serving climber of the greasy pole has someone he can't pay off. In the monarchy you have at least one position in the state that by definition cannot be bought, by any level of corporate funding, electoral fraud or press subversion. The monarchy gives politicians a measure of humility - lots of politicians will of course tell you that they are mere "servants of the people", which is very easy to say when you're standing on a stage having a crowd of adoring followers chanting your name and singing songs after you, but rarely shakes out in practice. Being forced to say "yes your majesty" now and again reminds them that they are here to serve, not just fight for their own prestige.

      And I'm glad Wilson got a lot of mileage from talking to the Queen, but that was a long time ago. I mean last year Johnson lied to the Queen's face without remorse, so really it sounds like the levelling effect she has on PMs is really just distilling how much respect they have for their responsibilities of office into a relationship with one person.

    • @kapparomeo
      @kapparomeo 4 роки тому +3

      @@TheMattastic "lied to the Queen's face" would be a matter of interpretation, really. A lot of those sorts of criticisms are also dishonest and made in bad faith - not saying it's the case with you, but many of the people who were acting outraged over the prorogation last year were left-wingers who normally would be only too happy to mock the Queen except when it served their interest. If you want to settle these sort of constitutional arguments you won't get them sorted out in a republic, either - a written constitution just means we'll have even more litigation over every comma of the document than we do at the moment. I don't think the America comparison is inappropriate either - if it's unfair to compare all republics to their worst examples then it's also unfair to blindly assume a change of system will always be its best and most optimistic version too.
