Schadenfreude In Reality TV

- Schadenfreude is a German word translated as 'shameful joy', or literally as 'harm-joy'.
Psychologists have separated feelings of Schadenfreude as being aggression-based, rivalry-based, and justice-based. It is essentially finding pleasure in the misfortune of others.
Here I briefly explain how Schadenfreude is utilised by reality TV to different extents.
The Birth Of A Nation (1915), The Dirty Dozen (1967), Red Dawn (1984), Die Hard (1988), You've Been Framed (1990 - Current), Bridezillas (2004 - Current), Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares (2004-2014), My Super Sweet Sixteen (2005-2017), Dragon's Den (2005 - Current), Kitchen Nightmares (2007-2014), Real Housewives Of Beverley Hills (2010 - Current), The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011), Headhunters (2011), Blue Ruin (2013)

"Kitchen Bastard" is the reality show that I never realised I always wanted.
Ahh 'fresh frozen'.. someone knows his material.
Donkey!!!
Immediately went to the comments and there it was...on the very top. 🤣
They’re not frozen, they’re deep chilled
Interesting thing about Ramsey is the difference between his UK edited show and US edited show. In US ones he looks like a lunatic. In the UK ones he really seems to try to help out mostly.
I hope most Americans can tell he isn't a lunatic like I can
The UK one was actually really interesting.
Ramsey sold his soul for $$, his only interesting show was indeed the uk version. Chefs are everywhere nowadays, dumb ass tv...
Yeah they both had a repetitive structure to them, but the UK episodes are always like "You need to simplify your menu, use more local produce and be more appealing to local patrons" whereas in the US version the food is always inedible, the kitchen is full of dead rats and the restaurant owner is an unbearable narcissist.
@@m3gAnac0nda I wouldn't be so convinced that the difference is purely him selling his soul to American execs. Kitchen nightmares UK is pretty on par with the rest of UK relality tv because that's just a preference for UK reality TV execs want. They likely had as much of an input as the execs on the US show had
Well George, you figured us Americans out. Ever since Jake Long left us we’ve been severely lacking in dragons.
This is seriously an underrated comment.
*Georg
You've got a Dragon president though.
Even Kanye West admitted it. "Dragon energy"
I get that reference.
The Housewives scene hurts even more, when you know that the woman was in a heavily abusive marriage at that time and was reacting so harshly because she was literally scared for her life when one of the other housewives made the severe beatings she was enduring public. She was scared her husband would kill her or harm her daughter.
She was constantly hiding bruises with sunglasses and make-up and at one point had to undergo reconstructive surgery on her face.
I think a lot of "reality" tv (including stuff like "Jerry Springer", if that's still a thing) is the idea that "yeah my life sucks, but I finally found someone with a more pathetic life than me." With the bonus that, while our humiliation is mostly private, theirs is being broadcast to the masses. Or the healthier take may be "hmmm, maybe my life isn't so bad after all." ;)
modern day versions of the carnival freak show
@@kentcampbell122 I've been saying this for ages, it's also one of the reasons I'm against it, it's not just generally trash TV, but you are making fun of in some cases clearly mentally unstable people. Several of them don't need a TV show, they need a damn psychiatrist or something and yes, I know a lot of it is also fake and setup.

I would say it is overrationalizing. People are social animals and love to gossip. Behavior of others amuse us, especially intense behavior.

As a german, i thought "Why is Georges title in german?" .. then i remembered that this word is used in English as well x)
Edit: We have a saying: "Schadenfreude ist die schönste Freude" wich means, that Schadenfreude is the best kind of joy. Wich is somewhat true
this will sound silly, and it may even be a spoof, but in 2006 when the World Cup was in Germany, one of the channels in the UK did a humourous piece on German words and phrases. So, let's say you are having a discussion with someone, they come up with a point you don't have an answer for and thus 'win' the discussion. A few hours later though, you come up with the perfect reply, although you thought of it far too late. Is there a word for this situation?! I told you it was silly!
@Skusioh
About your edit: We actually have that saying in Swedish, too: "Skadeglädjen är den enda sanna glädjen". Not quite the same, but really close. :)
But yeah, it's so true.
@@davidlean1060 Aah...the so called "Spätschämkonter" - late cringe counterargument. Damn, I wish, I would have made that up sooner. But I'm going to use it from now on anyways.
@@davidlean1060 There's actually a French expression for that, "l'éspirit de l'éscalier", the wit of the staircase.

In Finland we have the word "sosiaaliporno" which translates fairly literally to social porn (who could've guessed?!). It's basically about sticking cameras to places that they have no business being in and people watching other peoples degradation for entertainment. I think it applies to most reality TV shows and the porn part of it is quite fitting. Though I find actual porn to be more honest, more real and overall healthier than reality TV in general. Also actual porn doesn't leave the same feeling of dirt and grime once it's over.
> Also actual porn doesn't leave the same feeling of dirt and grime once it's over.
speak for yourself
Yeah, and it's getting worse and worse. Listening to Radio Rock at work, one day they were talking about the Finnish Temptation Island and how the last season was full of 20-somethings that were there only to fuck strangers and that "the show lost it's meaning". Pretty damn funny considering the whole show is the posterchild of social porn. I have never watched it because the premise is god awful and even sticking pins under your nails is a better activity than watching that, but nevertheless the comment sounded hypocritical and tried to make the show seem actually useful in some way. As a side note, I wish they didn't cover shit like that on Radio Rock, fucking talk about anything but reality tv shit.
that word is disgustingly accurate. Finnish language is kinda straight forward isn't it?
@@Karl_Marksman It's hard for me to comment exactly as I'm not an expert in any language. But we do have a culture of being a bit straight forward. For example, not having the word for "please" makes us sometimes forget its use when dealing with other cultures, which makes us sound like we are giving orders to everyone. So unintentional offence can and does occur.
Also, we do actually have the word "vahingonilo" which is pretty much "schadenfreude".
In all honesty, I would argue that most humor is based on schadenfreude one way or other
I like that George is just sitting in his dimly lit second bedroom berating a Steve that never was. Keep having Steve on, he's great!

Had a bastard of a boss years ago. One day someone came in and said he fell down a manhole. The office erupted into open laughter. Then the person said ‘no, no. He’s really hurt. He’s in intensive care’. Because he’d been such a bastard, a lot were still giggling. I still think about that every so often.
Im really gonna need more content coming from you George. Even if you just review a few VHS tapes or do a top ten worst candybars still being sold. Thank you
I'm trying real hard to think of an awful candy bar, but I'm blank.
@鬼佬 - Gwai'lo - We do that all the time in the US. It's common carnival food. I've had one, they're not horrible, but you're not missing out on anything. Room temp candy bars are better.
@鬼佬 - Gwai'lo - Yea, we love our deep fry. If you deep fry food properly you actually do not get much grease on it due to a thin steam layer between the food and the oil. Food only gets greasy when the oil is too cold or the food is left in too long. The oil in most fast food places is too cold due to the large quantities being cooked, which is why American deep fry has a bad reputation. But cooked properly it is sublime.
@@LividImp have you never had a PayDay or King Bing?

I am puzzled why they blurred Gordon Ramsey's crotch in that one scene. If his fly was open, surely his personal assistant would have told him before the cameras started rolling.
Is he holding something in his hand?
A middle finger

Oh. You meant his own middle finger.

"Kitchen Bastard" really tickled my fancy. Thank you, Georg.
Charlie Brooker did an excellent segment on reality TV a decade ago, where he creates a fictional reality TV show then demonstrates how easy it is to create a narrative just from editing what actually happened

One interesting thing to note: the UK and US versions of Kitchen Nightmares are almost polar opposites. The UK version of Gordon Ramsay is thoughtful and reserved, and the storylines have much less "manufactured" drama. The US version portrays the restaurant owners/managers as garbage people most of the time, and the UK version portrays them as regular people with regular flaws.
This is a common trend. Here in America, our news is more sensationalized, our comedy is less subtle, and violence is glorified while sex is considered taboo.
I loved this and have missed you Georg. I'm happy to hear there are no problems with your film and hope the rest goes well!
Just wanted to say that I loved the inclusion of closed captions and the mini jokes that were hidden in there. Also a big help in determining what you meant by "eggs" in your example. I got quite a laugh when I found out you were saying "X."
I feel like I keep saying this in your comments, but - dude I absolutely love your insight and delivery. I've learned and understood more about film, language and society watching your videos than I ever did in formal education. Never stop!! :)
I really think these videos are a brilliant spiritual successor to Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe and Newswipe. Great work.
With regards to your last example; I think they portrayed him in the extreme of being an asshole to get the opposite extreme of empathy when you find out how he is. You feel more emotion both ways, you learn a lesson that assholes are often in pain themselves. I think that would easily be missed if the audience had a tempered view of him from the start
That was intriguing....I never heard it broke down quite like that before....thank you.
the fact you're still making videos while doing the movie is awesome, good luck with it all and thank you for the update
Hello Georg, this is the one and only Steve.
I apologize for my poor performance today. The teacup was a hazard I handled poorly and my camera cuts could be use some improvements... I blame the rough week I had but I'm not here to make excuses, I simply seek your forgiveness. I'll improve my performance next session and I won't let you down a second time, you have my word.
Yours truly,
Steve.
Why do I have this awful feeling that, in today's world, Schadenfreude can win people seats of immense power? More specifically, people who've never heard the word Schadenfreude
Red Dawn is not a great example of this. There is only one montage in the middle of the film where the resistance of the Wolverines against the occupation forces is shot as a rousing, crowd-pleasing battle sequence. The first time they take up arms, it is against sightseeing Russian soldiers that the script by John Milius takes time to humanize. And the last shot fired in that sequence is an act of ruthlessness, upon a wounded young man who looks absolutely terrified.
Nearly every time they take up arms, after that one montage, it ends with the diminishing group being hunted like animals, turning on one another, or being caught up in a battle that shrinks their personal vendettas to insignificance against the backdrop of the larger war being waged. And the last stand of the two main protagonists isn’t about revenge, or glory, it is about ensuring that someone, anyone, survives to tell their story.
And again, the two military leaders they are up against in this sequence have been humanized in the script. We’ve seen the Nicaraguan officer show grief over the loss of his soldiers, and heard him compose, in his own words, a heartsick letter to his wife back home, wishing for an end to this war and his role in it. He also stays his hand, in a way we did not see from the two brothers up to that point. And we’ve seen the Soviet officer, brought in to (rather successfully) contain the activities of the partisans, issue a command to end the reprisals against civilians, which he can see are inspiring further resistance activities.
It’s a smarter film than the critics who dismissed it as jingoistic propaganda have ever given it credit for. And one with a fairly nuanced depiction of both the resistance fighters and the occupying forces. Likely informed by not only the struggle then unfolding in Afghanistan (which Milius has referenced in interviews), but also by the partisan groups who fought in Eastern Europe from 1941 to 1945. Even the memorial shown at the end has been named Partisan Rock, which seems to acknowledge this influence.
That was an interesting and well-argued point. However, I think it's not inappropriate to mention that Red Dawn is not a great example of this ... _for a critical thinker._
And since schadenfreude in _reality TV_ is our topic, well, critical thinkers there are in short supply 😅
Well said
I think The Patriot is better example of this.
Jesse H. Yeah, I hadn’t thought of that. Good point.
Let's just say Red Dawn is...problematic.
There is also a lot of "fremdschämen" going on. Means something like second hand embarrassment.

YAY Film update! Looking forward 😆
1:31 that's where you're already making a mistake though. Shadenfreude from what I have seen from German TV and know from my own culture's equivalent is only about misfortune, not actual crimes. That's dark/black humor. It's why rape jokes are also not schadenfreude, because it deals with an actual crime rather then someone stupidly tripping over a banana.
At best, Shadenfreude is the border between slapstick and dark humor, but joking about such actual crimes is dark humor territory.
I was thinking the same. It’s not really joy in these cases, maybe relief?
The early seasons of Kitchen Nightmares from the UK are great. Ramsey is not as much of a maniac and it is just about helping struggling restaurants. It's really good. They also don't over-do the music.
The belief that you have to like a protagonist and dislike an antagonist is pure philistinism. It's anti-artistic, simple-minded nonsense.
He didn't say that. He said for lots of films to work (In relation to schadenfreude) you have to like the protagonist.
@@Johnstruct If you remove the part in brackets in your comment, it will be an accurate account of both what he said and what I said he said.
@@patavinity1262 Sure but I assumed that when he said lots (rather than all) I assumed he was speaking in relation to schadenfreude as that is the subject of the video. If I say lots of my coworkers drink coffee that isn't all encompassing statement about how people work in offices have to like coffee.
@@Johnstruct This comment is literally meaningless. Try again and take more care with your choice of language.
@@patavinity1262 My apologies. I will try to be clearer. He doesn't "believe that you have to like a protagonist and dislike an antagonist" he doesn't say that. He said that for a LOT of films to work you have to have a like the protagonist. Sentence A "You have to like a protagonist for a film to work" Sentence B "For a lot of films You have to like a protagonist for a film to work" these do not mean the same thing. Sentence A is all encompassing Sentence B is not. I will add my own example - For lots of films to work you need sound. I am not saying for a film to work you have to have sound. To say that is pure philistinism. It's anti-artistic, simple-minded nonsense. But for LOTS of films work they need sound.

Good video, gave me something to think about. I wonder, though, whether you overlooked the important part that self-righteousness and self-satisfaction play in the observed humiliation of people we've never met. These confrontational reality shows make me uncomfortable, and I'm skeptical of the rosey endings usually depicted.
I think that part of it is feeling better about oneself...it is very easy to look at these people and think, "My life may be a mess and I sure have issues but at least I'm not half as awful as these idiots!"
Yes yes yes that's all very interesting but WHAT ABOUT THE HIP TANG?!?!?!

Glad to see the lava lamp is still here :)
Looking forward to some classic Dameen and Gog rambling bullshit. It really butters my synapses.
I think reality TV is at least partially designed to satisfy our need to believe that good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people. A reality show about a genuinely nice person who, through no fault of their own, loses their job, goes through a divorce and ends up on the streets might be a more honest look at the terrifyingly chaotic nature of life but it's hard to sell that to a wide audience.
A talented entrepreneur getting funded on Dragon's Den and a loathsome restaurant owner getting grilled by Gordon Ramsay are both examples of the karmic justice we hope to see in life, but not necessarily what always happens.
Agh! The two blobs in the Lava Lamp were just about to merge... and you cut away! YOU MONSTER!

I have just found out where "that" cat meme came from. I amz now down with the yoof.
Reality tv shows have always made me feel very uncomfortable since i was young. You know when you can just sense an underlying malevolence but you can't put your finger on it. And in my experience the type of people that watch these programs seem to emulate a lot of the undesirable traits of the people on screen. I think the rise of reality tv over the past few decades has been a major influence on the self importance of everyday people and more lately the rise of social media which has made everyone think they are superstars.
Bingo.
"Cut back to me...cut back to me Steve" had my side hurting man. Lol.
Kitchen Bastard would be a great name for a band. Or a wrestler. His gimmick could be throwing pots and pans at the opponent.
I would love to see a reality dating show where the name of the game is to stay single, but they keep getting put into romantic situations. Couples get eliminated when they match up, and replaced with two new people - the opposite of Bachelor in Paradise. The game could actually be endless, and carry on with the same characters for years if they remain single, with no prize money but a pay scale that increases with each episode. As time goes on in isolation it would be harder to keep people off each other. I guess this pitch is a blend of Bachelor in Paradise and Big Brother. I'm imagining crazy team challenges like the Amazing Race.
I can't believe I never realized the schadenfreude in reality TV. I never could understand why anyone enjoyed that shit. I mean, I still can't, but the schadenfreude angle makes sense.
And then there's Amy's Baking Company, who 100% thought they did absolutely nothing wrong and only invited Gordon because I guess they thought just having him exist in their restaurant for a few days would magically make their negative Yelp reviews go away.
Also I'm incredibly disappointed that I recognized that Beverley Hills clip from the "Two girls yell at a cat" meme and that they aren't actually yelling at a cat.
