Fun fact about the new one: the first season didn't actually have them riffing in the same room for the most part, a lot of it was ADR'd after the fact, which is why (for my money) The Gauntlet has better pacing and riffing, they were doing them all together in the same room. And whatever you think about the new seasons, love them or hate them or somewhere in between, Joel has run some of the most honest and transparent crowdfunding I've EVER seen. Constant updates showing EXACTLY where the funding/money goes and why exponential growth is not only possible, but inevitable (the first Kickstarter answered the question of "why does X amount only equal 3 episodes, but Y amount equals 6?" by showing how much it was going to cost to build sets and pay for writers/workers VS how much it costs to KEEP those people on once everything is in place). Considering how many Kickstarters seem to think they can just put out some vague, overly optimistic goals and then just go radio silent for years (or indefinitely in some cases), Joel's total commitment to showing people just WHERE the money they pledge is going is not only admirable: it's incredibly smart! You actually introduced me to MST3K. Thanks to you I've watched the two seasons of the Netflix revival and loved it. Thanks for helping to create a fan.
The reason a good chunk of people don't know MST3K comes from the fact that this show was barely brought outside of the US. For example, we never got it in Germany, instead we got our own version called "SchleFaz" about 6-7 years ago which is still running and tackles waaaay different movies for the most part. Of course SchleFaz tackled stuff like Samurai cop, but we also got stuff like Hentai Kamen for example. Also our version is way more low key. We don't have any major set-up, it's just 2 famous comedians/actors making fun of it like modern Internet reviewers in a living-room while doing tiny skits about the movie inbetween add-breaks and the like. And instead of talking over the movies they actually blip in some word-boxes/baloons with their witty remarks or running gags.
Again, that's probably due to rights issues as much as anything else. They had trouble with video releases of some episodes as well. The RiffTrax crew wanted to release riffs with the movies, but it was never going to be affordable, if they'd been allowed at all. They also toyed with the idea of creating a player that could play the riff and movie in sync.
22:06 - 22:10 Wayne would later be found beaten up in a nearby alley with a note saying: "Koyaanisqatsi is a FUKING masterpiece and will be respected as such. - The Mistress" Who this could be is still ongoing.
Last February I went to watch Jonah do some stand-up comedy, and he actually played and sang the "Every Country has a Monster" song during his routine. It was so cool.
26:17 This is off-topic (not a reference, I assure you), but around St. Patrick’s Day, Ryan Reynolds sat down and watched Green Lantern (he admitted he never actually saw it when it came out, you can debate whether or not he was serious), and when he finished, he actually thought the film was okay! Sorry, just wanted to say that.
1:43-13:23 That is one of the best explanations about the show I have ever heard. I will admit I was very unfamiliar with this show before this video. I was aware of MST3K, I just never watched it. I decided to go find some of the Mike Nelson episodes and so far I am really enjoying it. I especially love Tom Servo. I also love that his voice actor played a role in the recent Tex Murphy game. Thank you Linkara for giving me a proper introduction to this show.
Example: from "The Amazing Colossal Man" Glenn:"I don't want to grow anymore." Joel:"I'm a Toys 'R' Us kid." Glenn:"I DON'T WANT TO GROW ANYMORE!" Joel:"I'M A TOYS 'R' US KID!"
I am sorely disappointed you didn’t switch the credits music for the one in the show. Would have been a perfect bookend for that ‘turn down the lights’ intro.
13 minutes in and I forgot this was just an intro for a comic. I was oddly content just thinking that this was a half an hour episode talking about what you liked about the show
The idea of making the beginning of these reviews so the theme song & title card can be placed at the front (or even be moved to after the intro) could come in handy, especially for episodes that cover each individual issue of a series or even the retrospectives. It could work as a smoother way to put compilation episodes together in longer videos & remove that "Jump cut" feel going straight from one episode to another in some of those videos.
I have nothing but respect for the Joel era, without it we'd have nothing, But I just thought the Mike era was funnier, I probably rank it Mike, Jonah, Joel, but that is in no way a diss towards Joel.

I only knew what MST3 was 'cause of reviewers like you, my country never got the show (at least not in the past) so i never got into it, and i still can't get into it. But i'm beyond grateful for what it inspired and still inspires, even if it isn't for me, so i hope the fans get more of it!
The striped shirt was a big part of French fashion for a long time, and I'm sure I've seen it combined with a little ascot or neckerchief on more than one occasion. The guy really does look like an old movie's stereotypical French artist - or maybe an off-color street mime.
They’re called Breton shirts and they relate to the navy. The Russian military also uses them though so I can only assume the unique association with France comes from Anglo focus on France. Honestly a red striped shirt like that would give me more of a quebecois lumberjack vibe.
AT4W was one way that I rediscovered MST3K (I had seen a couple episodes before but they only exist in vague memories) and this last week, I became a backer for the second kickstarter so thanks Linkara for introducing me to my favorite TV Show ever made.
I've mentioned this review twice on the Kickstarter in the comment section. I almost wonder if maybe that's how they heard about it... but who knows. Let's get the Kickstarter to 5.5 Million! Or even better, lets beat Critical Role so Joel can get the belt back from them!
Loved the video, but honestly, the intro itself was something I enjoyed the most. It's always a blast hearing people talk about the things that inspire them and how they influence the work they do.
14:30 I did not expect a reference to the Tick, but I sure won't complain about it. Also, it makes me wanna see a review of any of the Tick comics. Also also, given your love for MST3K, much like Thanos, it was inevitable that you would review this MST3K comic.
The Totinos Pizza Rolls thing is likely a larger joke towards how Totinos was doing sponsorship deals with EVERYBODY back in the day, most notably Sonic The Hedgehog back in 2016.
"With that intro out of the way" Little over a third of the way through the video by that point. Not that I'm complaining I loved the History of MST3K segment.
@@ikarikid I’m more saying that the answer would be in the credits. They would discern what they do and do not recognize, and then by process of elimination know where the clips come from, even if they know nothing about the source beyond the title
@@DigiRangerScott yes, but then the question becomes “what is a MST3K?” Also, because it’s not as popular, it’s actually harder to access. Sure, stuff has appeared on UA-cam, but it’s UA-cam, links are fleeting and there are other rights issues. Also, I did see some older stuff on Netflix but that’s not visible in Australia anymore.
I've asked that question, and its mostly a case of "MST3K never broadcasted here". Together with a lot of other things in the credits so any random thing could belong to any other random thing in the show as far as I'm aware. Credits unfortunately don't help when there is nothing specifically connecting the credit and the clip in the show.
Ok, so let’s say that Lewis used clips of Colin Baker as the Doctor. Are you going to be able to recognise the episodes he and his coat appear in? (Except Real Time, because that was animated and he wears a blue coat in that)
The artist who drew the scenes on the satellite is Todd Nauck (probably best known for his work on the original run of Young Justice) and I know he must have been thrilled to get this assignment because he's an MST3K superfan! He's also a big Power Rangers fan and (if I remember right) half the reason that Liefeld's studio put out those Power Rangers Zeo comics back in the day was because Liefeld knew how much Nauck loved that show and got the license for him to work on it. This man keeps getting to work on all his favourite tv franchises
It's thanks to you that I got into MST3K. Before that, the only people who I had heard bring it up I had a very low opinion of, so in turn, I had a low opinion of the show. But, when I started watching you in the early 2010's, I figured I'd give it a chance after seeing the clips from it that were on AT4W. And now I've spent over $300 on Rifftrax (shorts and vods, since I don't really have the free time to sit down and worry about syncing) and I've added a bunch of MST3K episodes to my list of things to watch during the Halloween season.
Was introduced to MST3k through this show from an earlier episode, I googled msT3k (not knowing what that meant) and now I have nearly a hundred dvds of this show lol. Thank you.
Linkara good sir you have long been one of my favourite content creators and seeing you talk so directly about your love of MST3K is a magical moment. Thank you. Keep on doing what you do 😁
I never heard of MST3K before watching this show but I always found those clips to be some of my favorite running gags. I watched a few of the ones they themselves put on their youtube channel and they are a lot of fun.
Man, including every reoccuring MST3K gag really stretched out the credits of the show. Also makes a convenient key for which episodes to look for to see them in their original context.
16:52 Surprised we didn't get a "Too much Pink Energy is dangerous" clip to go with the bubbles. Also, are the Totino Pizza Rolls supposed to be a joke about the Hostess Fruit Pie ads? Because if so, it really fell flat.

I have got to say, you did a spot-on impression of Servo's current voice. Also, I backed the Kickstarter prior to the episode coming out. I can't wait to see the final product firsthand.
Not gonna lie, I thought that the various clips you've used like the "Shut Up!" One from megaforce was yours from past crossover and I could not for the life of me try and find them till complete accident and found the Hog goblins video on UA-cam ( it was on of those channels that pirate/upload old videos) and I have fallen in love with it since
I feel the mst3k format is actually getting revived again on UA-cam, with a few channels (Razzle, Cosmonaut Variety Hour) getting popular at least partially f it. Especially since stuff like discord has made it easier to organize a group riff.
13:30 That feeling when you suddenly remember that this is about comic and is not an episode of "History of MST3K". Not a complaint, mind you, it was very fascinating to hear about. We never got the show in my country.
One of the things I liked about the host sections was how each host seemed to bring something different to the roll and their situation on the SOL. Joel was accepting, just letting it all happen and typically not being that proactive.only loosing his cool in specific circumstances. Mike was more frustrated, looking for ways to get out of the situation and more vocal about disliking the films, and Jonah felt like a mix of the two, while he was more accepting of the situation like Joel, he was more proactive like Mike, but rather then just trying to get off the satellite (ignoring the Gauntlet for a moment) he was focused on making improvements, upgrading the bots, building new ones and trying to make the overall experience more enjoyable.
Hey, nice work here. Very polished. My husband has a couple of these comics lying around. I admit that even though I like comics and LOVE the show, I haven't read them. I have this fear that there'd be too many levels of things going on for me to keep track of what was happening. (This is why I don't read MST'ed fanfiction, though I appreciate its need to exist.) The RiffTrax crew wanted to release riffs with the movies, but it was never going to be affordable, if they'd been allowed at all. They also toyed with the idea of creating a player that could play the riff and movie in sync.
I'm not even sure HOW I learnt about it in Canada. Honestly might have been form this show! But it was like 10 years ago so who knows!
MST3K also never really made it in other English speaking countries, in the U.K. practically nobody knows about it except for a handful of people
Here in mexico had a version but it only lasted 10 ep
22:06 - 22:10 Wayne would later be found beaten up in a nearby alley with a note saying: "Koyaanisqatsi is a FUKING masterpiece and will be respected as such. - The Mistress"
Who this could be is still ongoing.
Last February I went to watch Jonah do some stand-up comedy, and he actually played and sang the "Every Country has a Monster" song during his routine. It was so cool.
I love that song so much.
It feels like MST3K is so ingrained that the idea of someone not knowing it is foreign to me.
They must be replicants.

This is off-topic (not a reference, I assure you), but around St.
I am a Mike, Kevin and Bill guy. The Sci-Fi channel seasons were how I discovered the show as a kid.
I think the altered dialogue is meant to replicate how the hosts will sometimes put words in the mouths of the characters while riffing
Example: from "The Amazing Colossal Man"
Glenn:"I don't want to grow anymore."
Joel:"I'm a Toys 'R' Us kid."
Glenn:"I DON'T WANT TO GROW ANYMORE!"
Joel:"I'M A TOYS 'R' US KID!"
Example: from “Pumaman”
Cobras: MS DOBSON!!!
Crow: would you gift wrap this for us?
I am sorely disappointed you didn’t switch the credits music for the one in the show. Would have been a perfect bookend for that ‘turn down the lights’ intro.
Sadly it would mean being nabbed by ContentID.
@@AT4W Fair enough. Stupid algorithms...
4:54 I think we can all agree Mike's impression of Janeway was spookily accurate.

Linkara reviews comic books that make him want to squall
Yay, someone else who thinks the Pearl/Bobo/Observer era of Mike Nelson's tenure was the best! Also, everyone remember to help *#BuildTheGizmoPlex*
I have nothing but respect for the Joel era, without it we'd have nothing, But I just thought the Mike era was funnier, I probably rank it Mike, Jonah, Joel, but that is in no way a diss towards Joel.
For me, it's the most wildly uneven era. The percentage of amazing things vs. things that make me want to cry is almost 50/50.
That was when I started watching and I loved it
@@wolfmantheimpaler It often has that feeling of, "We know we're goin' down so let's just throw EVERYTHING at the wall and see what sticks!" Sometimes this works, and sometimes not. FTR: I love *Hamlet* , which I understand only about 9 other fans do.
Brain Guy is just plain hilarious
"...And we're gonna dig into it!" God that sounded so giddy, I love it
As someone who has watched your show for years and seeing you use MST3K clips all the time, this was a treat. It was nice to finally learn about the thing that influenced you so much. I'm not much of a fan of MST3K, but I do appreciate the legacy it created. Thank you Linkara, see you next week.
"Sure glad I don't look stupid in this" was your most featured one.
I only knew what MST3 was 'cause of reviewers like you, my country never got the show (at least not in the past) so i never got into it, and i still can't get into it.
But i'm beyond grateful for what it inspired and still inspires, even if it isn't for me, so i hope the fans get more of it!
MST3K never fails to make me laugh heartily.
Especially the "Mike Nelson, Destroyer of Worlds" bits.
Because of your videos i discovered MST3K thank you
The striped shirt was a big part of French fashion for a long time, and I'm sure I've seen it combined with a little ascot or neckerchief on more than one occasion.
MST3K was there for me at the perfect most-needed point of my life
14:30 I did not expect a reference to the Tick, but I sure won't complain about it. Also, it makes me wanna see a review of any of the Tick comics.
Also also, given your love for MST3K, much like Thanos, it was inevitable that you would review this MST3K comic.
Hang on? They have a comic?! Whaaaaaat?! 😂
We live in a world where the Nesquick Rabbit, Jello-Man, and The Kool-aid Man have their own comic, Linkara has seen much weirder.
It's because of AT4W that I got into MST3K. So thanks for that, Linkara! 👍
The Totinos Pizza Rolls thing is likely a larger joke towards how Totinos was doing sponsorship deals with EVERYBODY back in the day, most notably Sonic The Hedgehog back in 2016.
11:48 Wait, the guys who made Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites, the guy who voiced Gex and... Yea, have no idea who Elliott Kalan is...
So glad to see more fans of MST3K. Also great to see comments on the video to help boost it
the "You know we can hear your thought balloons" absolutely slayed me, I don't even care if it doesn't make sense
Complete MST3K Retrospective.
You want it.
I want it.
America wants it.
"With that intro out of the way" Little over a third of the way through the video by that point. Not that I'm complaining I loved the History of MST3K segment.
Just thinking about someone being shown MST3K for the first time makes me feel all fuzzy inside.
You can also fight Mephisto to get Spider-Man marriage back
Glad to know I wasn't the only one thinking along those lines.
@@joshuajackson4473 lol 😂 nice 👍

Linkara sat on his futon to riff some comics for you and me.
So the people who ask where the MST3K clips come from don’t read the credits at this point?
MST3K has never really made hay outside the US. I’m going to suggest rights issues had a part to play in that.
(Except Real Time, because that was animated and he wears a blue coat in that)
Mike, Joel, and Noah all have there own appeal to bring some good laughs. I love all generations of the show.
I agree about the break moments but as far as the movie commentary goes, I enjoy Joel's the best
Their
You need to use that stare clip after the Tourette joke more xD I think I almost tore a muscle laughing a that clip timing
I pitched in on the first MST3K Kickstarter, and I did the same on day one of the new Kickstarter. KEEP CIRCULATING THE TAPES!
Dude, mst3k was my childhood, I didn't understand the jokes but the goofiness of it was hilarious.
I am honored to have riffed Masters of the Universe, The Fantastic Four, and Dragonball with you Lewis!
I can never get enough of that clip about the refreshing mint flavour. A timeless classic!
Thank you. Keep on doing what you do 😁
Also Linkara, I actually saw you on the Rifftrax Live! Blu Ray haha.
The most shocking thing that we learned from this episode: Linkara still has an MP3 Player.
Eh, I don't like using my phone as one.
Yes! Your show got me watching MST3K in the first place, and I didn’t know that they had a comic, so this is like Christmas in April.
I'm going farther back for an older and lesser used joke starting in the Newmen #1 review: pink bubbles are SERIOUS.

I came up with these silly names some months ago when being in my bedroom.
Lechturegeist and Slenderella.
these spoof movies ideas I've also come up with a restaurant name ideas that I call Grooters. it's my Gardians of the Galaxy humor now I did this because hell yeah I served rediculous to many cause it's fun and I'm a strange. very individual person. but ya see that's the way uh huh uh huh I like it uh huh uh huh that's the way uh huh uh huh I like it uh huh uh huh.
Good job linkara this should have been called at4w 3000 and to add to the mst3k had a comic book
16:52 Zordon: "Pink energy is dangerous."
I have got to say, you did a spot-on impression of Servo's current voice. Also, I backed the Kickstarter prior to the episode coming out. I can't wait to see the final product firsthand.
I'm just about to start dipping my toe in MST3K... this video was right on time!
Oh I knew you would advertise the kickstarter in some way, and SO GLAD YOU DID!!!
#MakeMoreMST3K
I'd heard of Mystery Science Theater but it took me ages to work out that's what MST3K stood for.
I bet Pollo is pissed that Tom Servo got working limbs and he hasn't yet.
Not gonna lie, I thought that the various clips you've used like the "Shut Up!" One from megaforce was yours from past crossover and I could not for the life of me try and find them till complete accident and found the Hog goblins video on UA-cam ( it was on of those channels that pirate/upload old videos) and I have fallen in love with it since
I love this episode! Id love to see more, if only to get some more varied clips like we got
Yes!! An episode of Atop the Fourth Wall, dedicated to MST3K!
I didn’t know mystery science theater even had a comic
13 minute intro
thats one chonker
love it
Another great video from Linkara. I haven’t watched Mystery Science Theater 3000 in a long time and the fact it had a comic book is interesting.
On of my favorite bits came from "Invasion of the Neptune Men" where he alien invaders destroy a building with a huge picture of Hitler on in it"
Shoutout to you Linkara for your tribute to Tom Servo an making him one of Poyos bodies. This comic made me so happy.
Mike seemed more like a character compared to Joel
Hey, nice work here. Very polished. My husband has a couple of these comics lying around. I admit that even though I like comics and LOVE the show, I haven't read them. I have this fear that there'd be too many levels of things going on for me to keep track of what was happening. (This is why I don't read MST'ed fanfiction, though I appreciate its need to exist.) But you've persuaded me that I should go look for them this weekend and give them a try. Cheers!
Gah, clever timing for the 25th anniversary of the movie hitting theaters. Also that bumper opening...
