Awesome Surf Fishing on Bushy Jig - Intense Bite on the Beach!

- Excellent surfcasting action in foul weather as the fish were set up in a rip and hitting bucktails on a sandbar edge. The key to this beach fishing was to focus on a small slice water where the fish were holding deep.

Hey John, I’m a 15 year old kid who loves fishing. I tried surf casting for the first time this week and I caught 2 striped bass. One was 22” and the other was 18”. I’m starting to get the hang of it. Both caught on your bucktail too!
That's beyond awesome! Thanks for sharing!
@@JohnSkinnerFishing no problem! I’ve been loving the channel for years now.
I’m the same way!!! 15, love fishing and watching these videos (especially John Skinner) to become a better, smarter fisherman!
nice job buddy. you have a lifetime of awesome fishing to look forward to.
Almost looks like tomales bay
Great action! Awesome video 🤙 good information.
Was this the bayside
Great vids ..anywho where is ur best surf casting area in NYC or l.i
It doesn't get much better than that
What a great video John, thank you for being so educational and bringing this content to all the new fisherman like me!
Is this long island ny?
yes
East coast or west coast?
LI, NY.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing nice.. if you ever get out to fish stripers in northern California you can use the same technique off our surf here from Santa Cruz to bodega bay. Tight lines 🎣
Generally idea where your fishing maybe? Time of year, wind direction, water temp etc. Thanks
LI, NY. Last week.
Have to love those days when your thumb feels like sandpaper from lipping all those great fish.
Hey John, what should I look for as a good spot when throwing for stripers in the sound ?
Points, rip lines, boulders.
I think it’s cool how well you keep the fish in the water while releasing. I really enjoy your content 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😁😁😁
Another awesome video, John! I really hope someday I will be as proficient with working bucktail as you are. What I know about bucktail fishing, I learned from watching you. Never used them before I started watching your videos. Thank you! 👍
Any idea what the depth is that you are casting to? Wondering about bucktail weight and depth of water. though if I remember right from your books, it's more about the current and what gets down to the fish.
Aaand of course, as soon as I post the comment, you talk about the debth lol
Great action!
Good catch skinner defiantly going to J&H to get some skinnier buck tail
Never quit! Never surrender!! Great video, John! On a different note, I got a really great inbox message from one of my viewers thanking me for the flounder he, his wife and other family members caught from using "my" rig. You know where "my" rig originated from? As always, thanks for all you've taught me from afar (since 2014). I'm always striving to help others be better fishermen/women in my videos as you do in yours.
I'm glad "your rig" worked!
Amazing.
Looks like ya had a nice piece to yourself. Hope to see you. around.
Boy my arm is getting sore watching !!😊
I was waiting for this 😃. Thanks 👍
Very good videos ! We would love to have so many of us follow us once! Congratulations!
What kind of main line and leader do you use
Are there blackish around? Or you just haven't tried yet?
Out of season.
Seasons wow it's been a while moved to FL. In 04 .
Something similar has happened to me too. Why do you think they are in such a narrow stretch? is it always hard structure?
It must have something to do with how they want to orient to the current.
How deep was the water you are casting into? Sorry if I missed it.
15-20'
Hi John, great video with good explanations on how to place the buck tail. Camping at Hither Hills next week and can’t wait to try your technique and I need to read your book again😉
Good luck there. It used to be awesome around Memorial Day.
Nice 👍🏻
Hey John do you ever wrap you casting finger? I’ve got some deep cuts from braided line after hours of my finger getting soggy
I wear a small leather finger protector. helps a lot
I've just never had that problem.
i always wrap my finger with a band-aid
You have to make sure you drag is tight. If the drag slips a little, it will slice your finger. That's why John hasn't had an issue with that, his drag is tight AF. LMAO
Hello John. What size clip are you using. I first thought you were tying direct.

Where are these beaches? Are they open to the public? Where can we find fishing spot tips or way points? Thanks love the videos
When you say " different part of the rip", is this in reference to a section of beach structure or literally rip structure? Did you notice anything different about the bucktail dropping (deeper, shallower) ?
I've been fishing bucktail hard the past two years. 100%my most productive lure. And of course I read your book twice.
Just a matter of moving upcurrent and downcurrent on the rip and trying to feel out the dropoff. I'm glad bucktails are working for you.
How deep were the fish?
Thanks
15-20'
Finding where fish are, casting from the shore, always impresses me! I can cast long to short, left to right and never seem to find a good spot - truth be told, there aren't many fish (within reach from the shore), around here - most people just go fishing on boats because of that.
@6:07 is the bucktail sitting on the bottom when these fish are hitting it or is it really taking that long for it to sink?
Never on the bottom - sinking.
Ay John is this like a bay! or the long island
I
Back in my day. It was baileys beach on sandworms. If today I would be killin it👍
Interesting. I know that you're a bucktail fan. Did you apply the hackle feathers? What about marabou?
I don't know anything about marabou. When I tied myself, I bought large quantities of hackles and sorted the sizes.
Hi, John. Great stuff, as always. I purchased your 1.5 oz. bucktails, but wondering if that's too big for flounder? Thanks in advance!
I use bucktails to 6 ounces for summer flounder (fluke)
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Nice. I was just thinking the hooks on the 1.5's might be too big. Thank you!
Does this same technique work on the surf or do you retrieve it differently? Thanks
Just swim it in the surf.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thank you. I need to practice using them in the surf. Haven't caught one on them yet.
Hi John..Wanted to thank you for chasing dorey review u did..I ended up with the chasing gladius mini s flash pack..was alot more but after your review it's a game changer..thanks again
Awesome - glad it worked for you.
Keep those bluefish dpwn south for a week or two.
Great video as always. What size Penn Slammer IV would you recommend for that rod?
5500. That would be a nice combo.
I love my 5500 highly recommend
Do you also crush the barbs on the bucktails & teasers for flounder fishing/sea bass?
Don't do it! Them flatties are escape artists.😉
I don't crush fluke jig barbs.
Hi John,
Where can I purchase that exact rig you are using? Thanks in advance for any info
There are links to all of the gear in the video description. Mostly J&H Tackle in Oakdale.
Awesome fishing!!! Catching them back to back. I suck! I haven’t caught anything the last 2 times I went fishing 😂
"I suck". I still say that to myself. When you stop, then you think you know everything and don't improve.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I’m still watching videos and learning. Been binge watching some of your videos on striper fishing. I live in Staten Island, NY and some guys out here are catching some nice size stripers. My wife Just bought me a new Tsunami Trophy II 8’6” rod and a Tsunami EVICT EVT3000 reel and waders just for surf fishing with jigs and other lures. I’ll never give up fishing cause I love it and grew up fishing with my parents and brothers. Things are so different now compared to when I was a kid. Years ago we’d catch fish as soon as we’d cast out lines. We have some nice beaches here to fish so I’m trying to learn the best times to fish and stuff. Keep up the great content!

Do you fish for fluke from shore? Also, do you do and retrieve when you’re fluking or is it just straight vertical jigging?
I do and I retrieve. Here's a vid ua-cam.com/video/7eq9MhKqdHo/v-deo.html

Hey John - as an old retired fisheries biologist, I really enjoy how you attack fishing in a scientific manner. You zeroed in on the location and had them figured. Once you get them, as you did, are you ever tempted to to change your approach and see if some different presentation would work as effectively? I know you are generating a video but that could be interesting to your subscribers too. No offense - just saying. garyL
I've fished there enough to know they're deep and a bucktail is the best tool. I've thrown pencils there for distance but they didn't produce as well.
Please let me know when you get oll that fish 🐟 I like to meet you so you can tech me fishing
I have never catch a fish with bucktails, I can't fish with them 😕
Who wouldn't like to take one of those striper home for dinner?
It would not work like that with a synthetic. You could have hit the island from where your jig was landing.
I’d be interested to know what you think would happen were you to throw a pencil out there….
I've penciled fish there before, but bucktails have been better because the fish are usually deep.
Sounds like you should have stay in Florida a little longer. lol
Do you ever try a gulp trailer on those jigs ? Thanks
No need to.
Awesome vid ! I have some new fishing content up id love for you to check out, happy fishing 🎣😀
