Hey John, what reel were you using? Its missing out of the description. Thanks
Still grateful to have learned the traditional pencil popping method when I was like 14 lol
👏👏👏
John with that big spook plug are you just using a straight med to slow retrieve? Or are you walking the dog? Is that what yiu mean by "sweeps "?
Look down and you can see my rod making sweeps.
Also what boots do you wear with your waders ? Looking to buy a pair so I can fish on the rocks like you
Korker convertible wading boots.
When fishing for stripers from
Shore do you mainly only fish the north shore all season?
I fish it a lot because I live there. I find it hard to leave the area I live to drive 70 miles round-trip minimum to fish the the South Shore.
John, I have fished L. I. Sound and a technique I was taught by Block Island surf fisherman is to have two anglers casting to the same spot with surface poppers. The fish bump the first lure and nail the second lure.
Where was that place exactly? Can you sent location please? Thank you.
I was fishing today I was using a mag darter but wasn’t able to get them grab a plug they just followed the plug to the shore why is that ? should i have went with a slower retrieve
A mag darter takes some water pressure against the lip to work right. I'd switch to an SP minnow or maybe a regular Bomber in that cast.
Love you John, learn a lot from your vid’s, thanks for sending in the rin, bro!
One good thing about surf fishing in the rain, everything you have on you is already waterproof.
That’s standing in the rain!
I wish just knew spot like this to fish like if I knew where this was I could catch fish like you. Do you have any tips on finding good spots John. I am not a googan.
Get out there and fish mate bows your time
Choose an area close enough to where you live that you can put time in on it. It's the only way.
Caught as Spanish Mack on that rod
No coolers last trip, no rain jacket this time! Time for a checklist?
I didn't forget it. Opted not to take it based on the forecast.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing The USAF couldn't/wouldn't fly without a checklist!
I was always under the impression that poppers and pencils don't work in the rain and the choppy waves. You learn something new everyday.
They excel in those conditions.
Great video..Link for knee pads?
They're old Hatch NK 45s, and I don't know of anything similar out there.
Always a good day when you catch fish!
John you are the man. I do not mind fishing in the rain when I have the right gear, but I'm not standing in the water during a down pour, nope! Kudos to you sir 👍🏾
John you should do a trip to central america
How do you know when to throw a plug/ popper and not cast out a bucktail instead ?
I need more distance than a bucktail would get me.
John, love your stuff. Did you use a head or chest mount for this video ?
head
Are you using the SaltX on this rod?
Yes - 6000.
Come on Skin, eastern li is a big place, HAHAHAHA.Keep it up brother, thanks!!.
John do you prefer the the outgoing where you are. Have heard different stories from locals incoming is better. I fish that area all the time just curious 👍🏻
It' entirely spot dependent. I know places where a couple of hundred feet separate a good incoming spot from a good outgoing spot.
I also don't mind the rain when I fish, the fish is already wet.
John what do you think of the lamiglass super surf 2g pro
When I fish with a tight drag I seem to lose a lot of fish when they thrash on the surface just after being hooked. Any strategy to avoid this?
I want the drag tight. Losing fish can be due to the action of the rod. This rod absorbs a thrashing fish, as would a Lamiglas GSB.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I think you've hit on my problem. I use a supersurf or other similar fast action rods, which I like due to their castability. I built a GSB 120L but haven't used it much, it seems heavy and clunky. I'll give it another try.
Hey John..did you ever see the bluefish Chris Vhoories caught off of Atlantic Beach NY? 25lbs. Scary as hell
Thanks for the video. Solid content. Entertaining and informative. What size reel do you usually pair up with that rod?
6000
John, Your opinion on the 60lb Boga. Too heavy?
It's one of the most spectacular pieces of equipment I've ever owned. Mine is nearly 30 years old. I never rinse it, and it's completely functional. It also sat on the bottom of the Sound for 5 weeks one time when I lost it and then found it again.
I'm going to buy one, but I hear a lot of chatter about the 60 being a little too heavy to carry around after a while. I'm not buying it to weigh fish but rather to help control them. I like the extra length of the 60 compared to the 30, just a little concerned about the weight.@@JohnSkinnerFishing
I use this holder and it's great. bit.ly/2mx4vXZ
Nice! What tide were you fishing and what do you prefer?
The best tide is highly spot-dependent
Now that's a dedicated fisherman let's give John a big thumbs 👍 for this video you know everyone would be heading for cover not john great vid brother keep up the great work your friend Mike from nj 👍
Dang
Rainin hard!
Hey John does your surf rod come in a 2 piece for the 10 footer
You'd have to check with Josh if he has them.
R Pt??
Years and years ago you asked my girlfriend and i to take a picture of you holding a giant Albie on a beach between macabes beach and hortons dont want to give up the location but been a fan ever since unfortunately these days i live in the north Carolina and only get to long island twice a year to fish i will be up in mid ocrober and just wanted to ask are the bigger fish hitting on the north shore at that time i always fish the south shore bridges and beach in October we use to go to the north shore just for blues.
Bigger bass on those beaches? Not really, not for me anyway. Albies are good in October, and sometimes the big blues. "Big" for the bass is generally 28-35 inches.
Being that I see the Sun setting, it looks like you’re facing West North West, is the tide going out ? I’m not trying to pin down your spot, I don’t have access to Southold any way. Just trying to learn. Thanks.
Outgoing, but the best tide is highly spot-dependent.
Looks like not stopping at the Ruins for rain gear has carried over to your surf fishing. Is there a way to blame Halkias for this >?
It's almost certainly the fault of Halkias. I'm just not sure how yet.
Hey John great stuff as usual. A couple of questions. How deep do you think the water is at the end of your casts? Trying to correlate to where I’d fish in the western Sound. Do you ever continue to use the spook in full dark? Lastly, at the end I think you mentioned you tried swimmers unsuccessfully after dark. In that situation would you try something quite like a darter, slow sink needle or sluggo?
15 feet, yes to spook in dark, Sluggo a good choice after dark, or Bomber.
Hey John thanks again for very entertaining and informative vid. Two questions. Any idea of depth of water at the end of your cast? Do you use the spook in full dark? Ok last one: you mentioned you switched to swimmers after dark with no luck. How about a sluggo, etc?
