One Lure Crushed It While Beach Fishing! First Cast Surprise!

- My first surf fishing trip of the season had hot fishing from the first cast! The stripers were hugging bottom and responding well to a jig in the strike zone. Low and slow often gets the job done on striped bass in early season cold water.

Dang they were stacked up thick. It has been a pretty unbelievable striped bass season so far
From one avid fisherman to another, the force is STRONG with you! I envy your skill and ongoing, constant success.
Last year I purchased your “Surfcasting for Stripers” and what a game changer it has been, absolutely has leveled up my fishing game.
Welcome back North and keep bending those rods.
I can't think of a better way to start the fishing season than getting a bent rod on the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and... casts. Awesome start, John! 👍
I guess the bass got the memo! Uncle John is back and let's give him a nice welcome. Welcome back!
" I'm surprised I don't have one yet" I think you're having a good trip. I once had a trip with my wife where we couldn't turn the reel handle without getting a hit. She retrieved the lure all the way in at one point and said" wow, I didn't get one on that cast" That was a day to remember like this one.
15-1 record on hookups? Don't be too disappointed John, sometimes it may take a trip or two to round back into form.
Geez, the fish gods welcome home the prodigal son in style, well done sir!
King of the North! He’s back!
We save our deer tails and my nieces husband ties our buck tails. Awesome video.
Skinner showing us how it's done his first day back, gotta love it! Tight lines 🎣
You certainly have a knack for making the rest of us look like amateur's!! Welcome back to LI
Nothing beats a Skinner hook set! Welcome back up North. Catch em’ up, John !
John skinner is the master of the bucktail
Great to see you back in your home fishing land john! Your fluke seabass and striped bass season has begone!
Welcome home John!!! the season has officially started!
Replicated this in NJ ~ absolutely my favorite way to catch Stripers. Tidal water moving good, shoal/seam/drop along it's path, drop down and WHAM! Can be absolutely non-stop until the tide stops. Cheers for inspiring me to seek out these kinds of conditions.
Awesome! Glad it's working for you.
John’s back… fish starting migrating north 🤣
A legend in action. Great vid
Welcome back the Island! Hope these crazy winds can die down to get some kayak videos in. Been very few good weather days so far this spring
What a first outing on your return, amazing!
Action packed, great video
Glad your back up north
Welcome back john....you're the man!!! Unreal! Lol
Glad to hear your back safe. As for the stripped bass they might not be so glad. Fish on....
He's baaack!!!
Love you videos. Thanks for all the great content
Looks and sounds like you’re out fishing the Ospreys in the background. Impressive
good Omen for a great summer of fishing!
Welcome home. Tight lines to the John crew and company.
Amazing!!! cant wait to get some casts on in the shinnecock inlet
welcome back!
I get the feeling that you know what you are doing. Great fun!
Slayed em!!! Couldn't ask fer a better fishin trip!!
That’s the way to start the season
They was waiting for John!!!!
Absolutely amazing! Almost every cast brought a fish! Plenty of fish out there - maybe it's going to be a good season. Wish there were half as many around here...
Haha nice john! Welcome home!
The striper bite is excellent this season, I haven’t caught an under yet. They’ve all been slots and a one over. Welcome back 👍
Welcome back John. I think the fish missed you😎
Master of bucktail fishing I’ve learned from you thank you
Welcome Back :-)
I really enjoy your videos . Watching them for a long time learning alot from your techniques , definitely would love to catch a tide with you sometime.
Welcome back to the Northeast, snowbird ;). I am in constant awe of your fishing abilities, amazing sir. I had a solid first week out and was humbled (again) by your performance. Well done, keep up the videos:)
Every now and then things just fall in line...and experience shows you where and when
Definitely looking forward to your synthetic bucktail video and the results. I imagine getting similar profiles will be challenging. But we will need a decent substitute in the future that’s for sure.
Awesome video brother.
that is too awesome ! im glad you're back ! can't wait for your giant screaming blues ! the wind has been hectic here by the jones inlet but I've manage to get a few this season so far, top water too which is always fun nice job 🤝 🇺🇸 praying for an Albie this year. awesome !
Welcome back john! Looks like a good season ahead! Watch out for the new striper rule and regulations.
Welcome back
Glad you are back up north! Been waiting for you and Rich the Fishaholic to come back up and post videos of what's been a decent start to the season. I still learn a lot from Florida fishing videos but ... they're not the same. I'll look forward to the synthetic BT videos
Got to like it ... fish every cast
Season started early. Best early spring I’ve had so far in CT. They are everywhere and larger than normal. Started with water temps in the mid 40s, seems like an unusual amount held over this yr.
That's like fishing for speckled trout in the winter time in corpus christi tx
NICE CATCH AN RELEASE!!
You had an awesome day for sure. I was able to get on them here in Virginia. Between 30-40 fish on my kayak. Clean healthy fish.
Nice Osprey too. Love those guys, welcome back to our reality. May 9 feeling like March 9.
welcome Back
Welcome home John
AWESOME Video John. LOVE your Content
Take care of that cough my Friend!
Welcome home!
Welcome back!!!
Stripers are making a come back.
Stripers seem OK. I'm not so sure about fluke. We'll see.
Welcome back sport!
Well done sir.
When I saw you catching tarpon with the 7' M carbon shield II, I knew that if I got the 7' MH it could pretty much handle any size striper or bluefish in LI so I got it ;) Thanks for the quality footage as always
Welcome back to NE John. 8 casts and 8 fish! Not exactly how my first trip of 2022 went...
Amazing ….I had a terrible fall season and bad spring until I tried those slam series salt strong from the promotion .. used them in the back bys stripe bass they love them broke the skunk !!! Slammed them
Welcome back, you weren't kidding, lots of bass. They must have been really stacked in that current. It must be nice being able to land fish without interference again, Thanks.
Great to fish the shore again. Not much access in my local Florida area.
Hopefully you left some fish for us down here in Lee County when you left the state. Enjoy your northern summer!
I was just yesterday saying to myself, I know John’s back in town, no videos yet ? I guess our season is off to a slow start, then no need for me to be in a rush with the boat, cold windy weather, and hideous gas prices. Haha I wake up to find this video, sure enough, he catches more bass in a dozen cast then I catch all year ! I guess I better stop lollygagin, and get my act together ! Looking forward to your review on that synthetic hair, I noticed that and not expecting positive results, hopefully I’m wrong. You The Man Skinner, thanks.
Welcome home John! Do you ever not catch fish? Haha
amazing
As far as the deer hair goes, NJ deer got hit hard with EHD this passed season as well as a few other states.
EHD in deer causes death which means less deer harvested by hunters. Less deer hides means less hair for bucktails.
The always impressive John Skinner. Lol
Skinners back.. Me first me first, lol!!!!!!!
this is just a textbook spot, that current break is insane
Just beat the storm!
GOAT
Lol. I always thought of that spot your at at the opening of the video.
Wooooooohoooooooo, northeast videos again! Unbelievable, first 3 casts! You’re like a fish god. Fish just gravitate towards you. Lol. Make sure you save some fluke for us this year. Some of us like eating fluke too!
Only watched the video once but Im pretty sure he caught 12 or 13 in that many casts.
DAMM JOHN YOU ARE TRULY THE KING OF LONG ISLAND FISHING, TOOK A BAD FALL AT THE CONSTRUCTION DOCKS LAST APRIL AND AM JUST RECOVERED AFTER A YEAR ALL MY RODS ARE DUSTED OFF AND I WILL HIT THE BAY BY SHORE OFCOURSE (NO BOAT) THIS WEEK. I NEVER DID ARTIFICIALS ONLY, ALWAYS USED BAIT, BUT THIS YEAR IT WILL BE ALL ARTIFICIALS PERIOD.
Good luck with the new season and artificials!
We are getting them in Rhody now.
I think the fish know when the legend is back in town so they probably figure they might as well go ahead and get caught and just get it over with.
I was thinking you’d be back soon now that the stripers are running
Love your videos John. I was wondering if you ever keep any to eat what your favorite recipe might be?
I eat fluke. I dip the fillets in pancake batter then fry in peanut oil.
Id say most the striper population has met John Skinner at some point during their life.
Love the videos and glad to see you back up north! Been fishing the canal behind the house (south shore long island) and usually do great with topwater because the bottom is very grassy/weedy but its been too cold. What do you recommend when the bottom is full of seaweed? Every cast Im pulling weeds off my bucktail. Thanks!
Fish a lighter weight bucktail and swim it off the bottom.
Great to see you back up here John! Also great start to the season. I’ve caught a couple slots this season so far thanks to your educational videos and book Striper Pursuit. Before this season, my biggest striper was maybe 15 in! Anyways, I sent an email to the Fisherslog report, do you still reply to those?
I do. Send again.
The SS Swing bucktail works really well for multiple California species notably with our Halibut . We have small patch holes in the Kelp along reefs and need to get a jig down quickly to hit the sand pockets they are laying on but need the most vibration possible to get um to bite. This jig does both and it lasts longer durability wise .
That's awesome!. Thanks for sharing that! I've heard from many CA anglers that the jigging technique works well on CA Halibut.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing how many seconds do you let bucktail fall before you start reeling the bucktail?
I deer hunt so I decided years ago to tie my own bucktails. They aren't has pretty as store bought but they do work.
Perfect. Pretty doesn't matter. I tied my own for a lot of years from hunted tails.
Welcome back John! Quick question, do you have a preference in color for bucktail and trailer at night?
Red, but white never seems wrong.
A fine welcome back John. I’m starting to think you have them trained! 😂
Question: Are you superstitious when you hook up on the first cast that it might lead to the dreaded first cast, first fish, last fish jinx? I’m normally not superstitious but I have had it happen more than a few times and have since then become superstitious in that situation. Hooking up on your next cast had me rooting for you to land it as to put that jinx to rest! Great start to your season John. Maybe a harbinger of better trips to come!
I used to think about the first cast curse. A friend of mine used to call them "sentry fish", because it was there job to patrol and hit whatever was cast and then warn the other fish away. I don't think of it much anymore, but I noticed as soon as I caught the first one on this video I said "That's probably the only one."
About time skinner what took you so long
Hey John can you explain your retrieve in this video? It looks like you are letting the bucktail sit on the bottom and only intermittently retrieving ?
There's a lot of current there. The bucktail is gliding a foot or two off the bottom. When I'm not realing it's hanging in the current.
You just ANSWERED THAT FOR ME...HAHAHA
Awesome start John! I guess you noticed that NY striped bass are always so much “thicker” (in terms of numbers) than even the best snook day in FL. I find it’s a bit more of a grind down here than it was in NY. Still great! But not as consistent and reliable.
I was thinking the same thing about fishing for redfish while I was hitting those bass.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing
You mean redfish are inconsistent too?
Hi John. Welcome back. Did you bring your Old Town Kayak north? I’m wondering what jig heads you recommend for using the Slam Shady up here. Most of the SS jig heads are way too light. I’m thinking that I need 3/4 - 1.5 oz but with a 3/0-4/0 hook. Any thoughts/recommendations?
Yes. brought the old town north. Those soft plastics are pretty small. An ounce at most I'd think.
Those fish looked clean. Wonder how long they've been inshore.
Hi Mr. Skinner. Are you casting over some type of sand bar? It looks like the current isn't moving at a certain spot.
No. All channel water.
I guess you're not in Florida.. or have the stripers pushed past NC?
Hey John, welcome home!! Was this trip before the big blow up here? We're coming off of a weekend of 60+mph gusts with 40-50mph sustained winds out of the NE starting Friday the 6th and continuing through Sunday. Pulled the boat to avoid any horror stories.
Right before the blow.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing ok. Mother Nature knew you were back and wanted to give the fish a fighting chance! Hahaha!
