On my Honda rancher I was riding it and heard a pop sound and then there was lots of smoke. It litteraly ate the pull cord. Would this be a simple result if the cord breaking or something more catastrophic? The cord seemed just fine, wasn't fraying or anything. And also, its always had a problem of it not catching when pulled and sometimes got stuck pulled out. Any ideas on what to expect when I remove it?

sounds like recoil spring issues. pull it apart and check it out.
