Chase you inspire the world who need to repair things that go wrong and need addressing ASAP , Many thanks for your great effort . We all learn from each other
Chase, you are a life saver. Had to respring the coil on a car seat belt mechanism and your trick saved me from cutting up my hands trying to load it by my bare hands. Thanks a million!
This was sooooo good! Saved my lovely little 125cc Suzuki Quad from me beating it with a hammer. Took me a couple minutes and I even skipped the tape. Bloods great now I can get back to saving those rare fossils in my area before they are destroyed forever in the ocean. You just helped saved some great history! Legend.
Thank you so much! I was able to find the pull cord at a local home depot store and when when my husband went to replace it found the spring was broken as well. I did not want to spend the 35.00 plus shipping for the whole recoil housing and that was the only way I could find the spring I needed. This worked like a charm. I was able to go help my husband fix it and look like I knew what I was doing. :)
Thanks chaseme81871. Using the drill is a great idea and helped me tremendously. I also appreciate your concern for safety, using tape and the zip tie(s). I'm from NY and much more impatient. Once I got that bad boy wound tight, I simply used a locking pliers (vice grip) to grab the wound coil tightly from above and then just dropped the wound coil into the housing in the pulley. Three minutes tops.
It took me two tries to get my spring in using this method, maybe because I was too lazy to bother with the tape. I have never worked on small engines, but this easy-to-follow tutorial had me putting my starter back together as fast as the pros. Dad always told me you don't necessarily have to be smart, you just have to know someone who is smart to show you how. Excellent. Thanks.
Incredible. I am handyman impaired and someone wanted to charge me a $100 dollars to fix it. For that much I was ready to just buy the whole engine block but thanks to u and your video I look like the man with my son. Thank you extremely much. I feel like I can fix anything now. All I'll need is your footage of theproject and I'll tackle anything. lol. I seriously thank you for putting up the video. I am now a subscriber... Thanks again and Happy Thanks Giving, your the best.
I watch two or three video prior to this. You explain better and clearer the purpose and how the nail play a role in the procedure. You add the dough tape is brilliant.
You are amazing. I am glad you took the time to do a second video. This is a grandmother who just fussed with a tiny spring on my mantis tiller and almost threw my hands up -when I watched you pull yours out and it sprang everywhere I almost had a HEARTATTACK!! That looks like fighting with a PYTHON! You definitely Rock and made it look easy. I was counting my blessings I did not have to fight with that one and when you mentioned it was cold and a storm coming and I saw you post was Feb. -then I was really counting my blessings as it is May and almost warm in Va. right now. Thank you so much .
I have been trying to repair a pull start on a Troy Bilt TBE 515 for over an hour. Watched your video and completed the task in 10 minutes. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for showing us how to do this. I have an ATV that uses a pull start in case the battery is dead, and when I took it apart, the spring went flying. This saved me over $300 to replace the entire piece. I was able to do it without the tape, but I never thought to use the drill and board. I also never thought to put it in the case first, then attach the puller. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!
Thank you for posting this video. The pull start rope on my Craftsman chainsaw has been getting stuck for a few years so I finally decided to fix it yesterday. I did my best to not remove the parts above the spring, but it was all tangled so I didn't have a choice. I too tried to rewind by hand, but had the same issue as everyone else. Today I will try using this method.
As I sit here and read all of these comments about what a great job I did to help someone out, it is very humbling , i never knew when i made this video that so many people needed the help. I never in a million years would have thought that so many people would enjoy this idea. thank-you for watching, and thank-you for such a nice comment.
This video was the saving grace to fixing my pressure washer. After my fingers were sore and cramped from multiple attempts to get that damn coil in place I figured I'd UA-cam it for some advice. Your video saved the day. Thanks.
Damn! I just wasted a half day on trying to figure this out - I knew some kind person, like you, would have posted a solution - THANK YOU - you saved me the expense of going to a mechanic (and my sanity!)
You are a genius!!!!! I wasted about 2 hours today trying to do this by hand & it kept coming undone on me & I said heck with it. I'll try again tomorrow. Fingers crossed ! Lol
just spent an hour trying to do this by hand, and felt like a giant baby when my hands started cramping up. Glad to know I wasn't the only one. Great Vid!
My Echo blower wouldn't recoil and I found the spring had jumped off the tab. I struggled trying to figure out how to rewind it and put the recoil back into operation. This video made the job a 15 minute exercise. Thanks so much.
the drill and screw is an excellent idea! I have indeed ended up many times with achy, cramping fingers trying to do this the wrong way, and often gave up and bought a new spring. Since your mind was so into doing this job right, I was able to see right through your head. Thanks.
i dont have a buck or two with me right now, but i have a big thank you for you.I was dissasembling the boat engine , an this spring jumped off . | panicked . You helped me alot . Thank you
Your video was great. I was struggling to coil up the spring. What a great idea. I made one small modification though, I think you'll like it. My spring was smaller so I only needed 2 smaller zip ties. I connected them and slid them up over the chuck on my drill. I held it in place while coiling the spring. Then I was able to drop it down on my coiled spring and SLOWLY release the tension on the spring until the zip tie contained the spring. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you so much...me and my husband have been trying to get one wond for about two weeks now and we finally rigged the weed eater to where we could use an impact to electric start it...and your video put the end to that we now have it fixed thanks to you....:) thank you so much
This is absolutely brilliant. Thanks for sharing. I didnt need to replace anythng, just washed and scrubed all parts with dawn dish soap, recoiled the spring like you show, and had it all working great, thanks.
I just used the housing to rewind it. I hooked the tab in the tab spot inside the housing and then just pushed it around the housing. The tension held it in place and I just kept feeding it in with my thumb. Took 30 seconds...total...
Cut open my fingers trying to do it by hand. Worked on it for 20 minutes killing my hands. Watched your 9 minute video and had it fixed in no time at all.
Thank you for the video. I was able to get a smaller spring on a smaller motor fixed without the zip ties and duct tape. But the drill driver and screw were essential.
Genius! Had 4 failed attempts today, hands are sore and cut. Spring kept unraveling when I tried to wrestle it into the housing. Thanks for the excellent video.
Just replaced the recoil starter pully on my blower and the recoil spring jumped out during the install. After 30 mins of frustration I got it in just before my hands gave out. This is worth the extra steps. Thanks for the video I'll definitely use this next time.
Fabulous, such a simple idea, but a serious time saver, I have done this the hard way before, and it takes a really long time and loads of patience, I have a defunct 2 stroke strimmer the rope broke on the other night, so I am going to try this now!
Very good idea. Still worth the $5 I pay the lawnmower shop to do it for me. Worth every cent to not suffer the cramping fingers afterwards. If he starts charging more than 5 bucks, I'll be forced to do it myself again. Then, & only then, will I be trying out this method. Thanks for the info!
amazing video!! I love the techniques you used! I myself am a "creative problem solver" , and you had some fantastic ideas on winding the spring :) very creative! thank you lots :)
Thank you for taking the time to share that. That is a great idea. I almost needed your advice. I got lucky and as I was pulling mine apart I saw it was about to come off so I pushed it back together and twisted it as I was pulling it and saw that it unhooked itself and stayed together. Peace, Reese
Absolutely ingenious! Love it! Adding this to my Favorites so the next time I screw up a pull-start recoil-spring I can come back and watch this again. Thanks!
Still finding your, second, make of this video after all these years! Thank you for taking the time. Even so, I am going to try one of your commenters suggestions first (you even seem to attract smarter-than-average commenters...) and try to "wind it in, in place, from the outside pin and working to the center." It sounds reasonable--but I've got marks all over my body from trying stuff that sounded like that. Even so, your tutelage is invaluable for its "thinking-out-loud" approach.
Thank-you. I hope you find the easiest technique that you can find. Anything that that will get the job done without anymore of those scars! haha... thanks for watching, and leaving a comment.
It happened that I did find a better way for me: I inserted a (19-yr-old) son between me and the project! I passed on your commenter's description of winding it from outside in and he reported back that it worked fine.
Thank you and wish I had seen yours first because you incorporated all the good ideas and then some. My Honda gvc160 needed this . I have ordered another because I unfortunately had about 4 cracks at it and buggered the spring ( and did not clean it off beforehand properly)..... But your clip has gone into “ must know workshop” playlist. Salute, n thanks again
Yo! Thanks so much! I connect to your folksy style and unabashed-hinging-on-self-deprecating style. You are easy to trust. (Probably easy to share a beer with too. :) ) Haven't tried your method yet, but you presented it all so straightforwardly, (except for your head getting in the way on a couple of occasions, ha, ha,) and I have everything I need, so right after I finish this comment I'm going to try it. I hope to get back here to share my experience. (One day Post Eclipse) August, 22, 2017.
In Japan, same same ol'. I wrastled a bit. It won. I thinki', "There gotta be a better way!" Washed up, fired up the UA-cam. Went out and broke it darn good! ;-) Broke it into being fixed, that is.
thanks for the video those springs are evil, i had a weed wacker pull start come out on me and it made a huge ball of pure evil that never wanted to go back in. Thanks to this video its now back in.
Very bad ass handy man thinking there! Unfortunately I have a craftsman lawn mower with a briggs and Stratton engine that is alot more complicated with the parts. However I am still pretty much positive most of these steps will come in handy tomarrow when I try to fix my recoil spring. Thanks alot lot brother. Much appreciated...
Thanks man, this was a job i didn't intend on doing, i was just fixing the pull start string and i bumped the housing and the spring came out... I subbed.
In the 70’s I had a mini bike that had a 5 HP Briggs engine that I broke the pull rope many times. I learned to rewind the spring and get what was left of the pull rope back in on a trail with a 5/16” wrench and a screwdriver. Happened many times. Finally the rope got so short I could not start the engine. Funny how my sisters jump rope came up missing. Should have thought of that when it first broke. I seldom was able to remove the spring assembly and get it back in without a disaster. Learned an easier way. Just wound the spring assembly in the housing and pushed the rope through the hole and into the spring assembly. Dug the end of the rope out with a screwdriver. Tied a knot and done. I was about 10 at the time.
Amazing spent 3 hours trying to do by hand but i didnt use tape cause i dont got any right now but still worked amazing ill never forget this way so easy
Thanks for taking the time to make the vid buddy, its been usefull. I should probably now go appologise to the neighbours for the swearing done when my spring unraveled on me.
Worked great, except I broke off the end of my spring! But I will go back further next time with the drill head. I was still able to get a zip tie on it and feel confident with these now. Just can't get too close to the end as you described. Thank you for posting this!
I thank you for sharing that information and I have had problems with the recoil spring myself and could not get it together again. I will remember this when having that problem again.
Awesome idea, thanks for making video! Got my ryobi weedwacker recoil spring replaced in 5 minutes, could have saved me 3 hours last night if I had found the video sooner.
II just fixed one. I tossed the spring, and cut off the top. Use the plastic spool to wrap the pull rope around and pull. Repeat if necessary. The other option is a drill and socket. Works great!
and don't forget to turn off the radio, place your camera in a better spot and blow your nose first... the sniffing, head blocking view and radio talk was so distracting.. sorry to say..
Thank you! How much of a hassle is this recoil spring installation? Well? As of 3-04-2018 there are 1.7 million views by frustrated DIY repair people who have watched it hoping for an easier way. It's very considerate of you to have posted this for our benefit.
I hope you've monitized your youtube site or are thinking of it. You won't get rich but it will take some of the pain out of composing and posting these videos for our appreciation.
i struggled with it by hand and it wasnt working, hands cramped and got sore like you said, i didnt use the zipties and tape but the drill method was the way to go, anyone else doing it just be careful putting it on the end because my recoil got all bent out of shape where i stuck it in the drill. my mower works again so thanks for the help
I'll work on it. I broke it (or let it loose) by taking it apart. thank you. After that I have to do small engine repair/rebuild/tune up. Snow blowing so important in MN.
I've been trying to hand tighten one back into its packaging ring for four days and thought I was brilliant, last night, when I FINALLY realized I should try wearing gloves! Now if only you can show me how to tighten it just a bit, while it's still in the shipment housing, so it fits inside its own plastic housing...might try this out!
Awesome Chasem e1871, I’m having the same problem that I’m going to attempt to fix today. That is if I can get the garage warm enough as it’s 19 below right now. Thx for sharing, great vid.
Thank you very much, I can not even express how grateful I am, because I two hours tryed to kick it inside the hhousing, With this video I did in 3 minutes. Thank you

Internet is what a interesting. U can be able to learn something from somebody who dont know who he is. Thank you from Turkey...
thank-you! from USA
In the 70’s I had a mini bike that had a 5 HP Briggs engine that I broke the pull rope many times. Amazing spent 3 hours trying to do by hand but i didnt use tape cause i dont got any right now but still worked amazing ill never forget this way so easy
Cool video, I never thought of using the drill to recoil the spring, tore my hands to shreds doing it the hard way.
+Sikorik 99 glad i was able to help. ty
Thanks for taking the time to make the vid buddy, its been usefull. I should probably now go appologise to the neighbours for the swearing done when my spring unraveled on me.
Nicholas Browne haha glad it helped.
I spent 2 hrs trying to wind that thing up. Finally I gave up and went to UA-cam to find out how. ThanksI
Exactly what I needed, thanks. I did not use a drill, but used a flathead screwdriver instead.
Nice. Small Vise Grips really help to lock the spring up before getting it zip tied to prevent another unwind.
Just spent an hour trying to rewind a spring by hand (failed) just watched your video so going to retry, wish me luck
John Castillon i hope it helped!
Worked great, except I broke off the end of my spring! But I will go back further next time with the drill head. I was still able to get a zip tie on it and feel confident with these now. Just can't get too close to the end as you described. Thank you for posting this!
Wow. I was trying to wrap with my hands and you saved me a lot of headache. Thanks.
I thank you for sharing that information and I have had problems with the recoil spring myself and could not get it together again. I will remember this when having that problem again.
Thankyou Sir, this was a great video for me, as i had to change the pull start on a 49cc bike. Awsome technique.
thank you. glad you liked it.
Awesome idea, thanks for making video! Got my ryobi weedwacker recoil spring replaced in 5 minutes, could have saved me 3 hours last night if I had found the video sooner.
Thanks friend helped a lot nice to have people arround shearing their experiences
Wish the best for you and family
Mate you're a lifesaver. Took me a few goes but nailed it in the end!
great!!
Great video! You've helped me out a lot! I've tried other videos on You Tube and your method is the best for my Poulan Pro Leaf Blower. Thanks!
your very welcome!
some of these video's are priceless…thank you…helped me no end….perfect
+John Ingham you are very welcome, and thank-you for leaving such a nice comment. I hope it makes it easier for you.
Thanks for this video. Ive been trying to fix this for a few days and was about to give up. Im heading out to do it now.
WOW YEA no more tired and sore fingers :)
LUV the drill tip :)
The TRIK I was looking for was the ZIP TIE & TAPE :)
GREAT job thanx:)
your a genius. farted around with mine for 1/2 hr til I gave up and searched you tube.
thanks for watching.
Awesome video captn. I greatly appreciate your presence and technical support.
how ironic you say captn, that was my nickname when i was little because i loved to drive boats!
II just fixed one. I tossed the spring, and cut off the top. Use the plastic spool to wrap the pull rope around and pull. Repeat if necessary. The other option is a drill and socket. Works great!
nice to see an old-style repair man without gloves/goggles, kevlar etc...
I used to chew on lead paint, and eat mud pies too. lol
I haven't used this technique yet but I will. I looks as if it will save me some time , pain and a few foul words.
I tried to do this by hand and, it's just impossible. Thank you for this video but, next time don't froget to put on your protection glasses ;)
thanks!
and don't forget to turn off the radio, place your camera in a better spot and blow your nose first... the sniffing, head blocking view and radio talk was so distracting.. sorry to say..
Thank you! How much of a hassle is this recoil spring installation? Well? As of 3-04-2018 there are 1.7 million views by frustrated DIY repair people who have watched it hoping for an easier way. It's very considerate of you to have posted this for our benefit.
thank you! if i only had 1 dollar for each one of those people. lol
I hope you've monitized your youtube site or are thinking of it. You won't get rich but it will take some of the pain out of composing and posting these videos for our appreciation.
I did years ago, but you are right. it is not much. lol
Thank you very much sir for your help. I used this information to fix a lawn mower but it was an inspired idea.
thanks for watching!
i struggled with it by hand and it wasnt working, hands cramped and got sore like you said, i didnt use the zipties and tape but the drill method was the way to go, anyone else doing it just be careful putting it on the end because my recoil got all bent out of shape where i stuck it in the drill. my mower works again so thanks for the help
your very welcome.
Thank you so much for making this video, it was very helpful. Just a quick advice to turn off your radio next time.
Thanks for the tips, I couldn't have done this without seeing your video!

to each his own, it has helped many people. thanks for the view and the comment.
Good job mate you saved me a lot of time and frustration. Works a treat !
glad i could help.
Works like a champ.
Thanks for posting the video, it saved my weekend
I'll work on it. I broke it (or let it loose) by taking it apart. thank you. After that I have to do small engine repair/rebuild/tune up. Snow blowing so important in MN.
very clever, worked brilliantly on my 670 ski doo spring thank you
you are very welcome!
I've been trying to hand tighten one back into its packaging ring for four days and thought I was brilliant, last night, when I FINALLY realized I should try wearing gloves! Now if only you can show me how to tighten it just a bit, while it's still in the shipment housing, so it fits inside its own plastic housing...might try this out!
thanks so much!! Happened to my little outboard and I just couldn't get it in there. this helped so much!
glad it helped!! and thanks for watching!
Awesome Chasem e1871, I’m having the same problem that I’m going to attempt to fix today. That is if I can get the garage warm enough as it’s 19 below right now. Thx for sharing, great vid.
