A total game changer. Well done to Rane for pushing things forward with Serato Stems. Can't wait to see what people come up with using this when they get the kit in hand. Now I just have to figure out to afford one of these !
Damn. Jaw dropped when you started scratching the vocal over the instrumental. Truly a game changer. I'm curious if the stems tech will see the kind of continual improvement we're seeing in other AI fields right now (image generation, chat, etc.). If they stay on top of the cutting edge we may see rapid improvement from all players pretty quickly. 🤞🏻
Oh state of the art models will definitely get better over time. Every year you can read accepted papers at Interspeech on source separation to see where the state of the art is right now. Following that, you can expect that industry will pull from it to put into production a few months/year later.
Whoever thought about splitting decks to use stems this way, man he was smart! It's been a very long time since I remember myself being that excited about a DJ controller! Well done, RANE!
@@johneccles9051 why would they make the srt compatible with rekordbox when they already have a version for it? Unless you believe they're gonna go the FLX-6 route and rerelease it compatible for both
Nah this in a way goes backwards by not having beat jump buttons, it's a nice controller but if it's bigger than prime 4 is rather just have something that has all that capability
Feel better!! I purchased VDJ just for the stems feature when it first came out. I loved it then and loving it even more as the tech gets better. It's a great time to be a DJ :)
Rane 4 looks good. I’ve been using the beta serato 3.0 and will try the final version out later. Stems allows for so much creativity I can remix on the fly old dancehall tracks (extract the acapellas) with new Afro beats riddims. Sean Paul and bounty killer sound nice on Afrobeats. Rev7 user here.
Okay I was pretty much not even interested in the Rane 4 as a Rane One owner...but now I'm rethinking. That use of the 4 decks for stem splits is pretty cool. And of course hardware fx... I do wish they kept the motor platters. They just had to put a thorn in the side for us motorized lovers.
Amazing summary! I can see how the new controller takes stems to the next level. I was a take or leave it stems DJ before seeing this but now, well, I can't wait to get my hands on some DJ software and maybe hardware with stems support. Bravo!
Thanks Mojaxx for a great overview as always. I think the Serato stem features are cool but Serato just needs to work on getting their stems algorithm as clean as Virtual DJs algorithm now and they'll have an out right winner
I agree re: the DDJ-XP2 - that being said, I did some MIDI mapping to Pad Mode 8 on decks 3 and 4 to fix that problem. Only snag is no visual feedback. Stems is super ace and found myself going back to my trance roots to use blend techniques on new and classic house anthems!
Ever since the leaks flooded social platforms about a new Rane device, my fingers have been crossed. When Pioneer released the Rev 7 controller, something told me to wait on Rane's answer. I understand the market decisions, but I prefer motorized platters. I have the Rane 12s & 70 mixer but need a smaller backup for small events. So either I wait longer for Rane to add motors or get the Rev 7. Loving Serato Stem so far... Great Video MoJaxx!
Hope Yo be test drivin this on a Twitch stream real soon my dude :) Easily the best demo of the Four i seen so far, damn its such a great unit. Damn. Damn i wan't one now :)
They might aswell do a Rane 4M aswell bro with a motorised platter since they have time and are not finished yet a motorised platter option too would be very smart 😉
MojAXX - I always comment on your releases because you are just so damn good at reviewing, talking to the user, building excitement and backing it up with appropriate technical discourse. You've earned your matching corduroy pipe and slippers to go with the rotary mixer review elbow patches. On a personal note - how good is your scratching getting now. Kudos! So please keep it going. The stems are getting there. Do I replace my denon prime four hmmm, its given me a reason to think. But so does the V10... Slightly obsessed. I got the allen and heath DB4 based on your deep review and that track splitting thing is amazing. It's really good to see true innovation from rane and denon who are chucking bombs at pioneer's conservative elitist approach.
Very impressive demonstration. Sounds like the unit could do with a stem split LED above the channel faders to minimise confusion "am I in stem split mode"?
I love being able to drop out the bassline even for the most simple mixes without effecting the vocal. I'm also loving the way I've mapped out Stems on my REV7, it's actually not as fun to play on anything else now lol I dig the screens on the Rane, but thats about it until I can feel the jog wheels.
Stems split with EQ is a really nice touch and will open up possibilities with Stems for straight blend mixing, rather than just open format scratch DJs. If Serato could open that tech up to midi mapping for devices like the Xone:K1, I could see more of the Traktor faithful venturing into Serato territory for sure. Really great to see.
My biggest upgrade was from seriously bad Reloop belt driven RP-1000MK2's to Technics SL-1200MK2's in the year 2005. Two entirely different worlds even though the Reloop's were marketed to give the Technics a run for their money :D But I need to give an honorable mention to the upgrade from cheap headphones to Technics RP-DJ1210E-S. For the money I spent for a dozen cheap headphones I could've gotten 3 pairs of the Technics and that single Technics outlived every headphone I owned in the previous 15 years.
Hey Mojaxx and commenters. What is that vinyl Mojaxx has the phase remotes on at 3:00 ? I've seen Skratch Bastid using those too and I'd like to pick them up. Someone clue me in please. Thanks and long live Serato!!
Question what jog wheels feels better the Srt1000, Denonsc6000 or the one on Rane 4? To me Denon Prime 4 and Numark ns6mk2 both jogs are way 2 loose however ns6mk2 which to me is a great controller but definealy weak on the Mic pre as well but everything else love it no complaints.
So is this ranes answer to the rev 7? I've been holding out on getting a pro controller but it's definitely narrowed done between this, 1000srt, or the rev 7. Just hoping the pricing isn't crazy. I always trust mojaxxs reviews. Dude gets right to the pros and cons with no bs.
Unfortunately, that's not how the tech industry works. There's no way Rane could have produced the 4 in one year. Especially with covid and supply issues. I would guess Rane started developing this after they released the Rane One. That'd give them 2 years of development time. A Rane One mk2 would be a true response to the rev7.
I recently upgraded to 3.0 and my Rane 72 rebooted itself for the first time ever in the middle of a mix. Can't help but think this is related to 3.0 so I've downgraded back to 2.6. For the life of me I still can't fix the random Rane 12 stopping issue. I wonder if Mojax or anyone in the community has any idea how to fix the 12 issues? I've started MIDI debugging but only happens when Serato is running and I can't monitor MIDI if serato locks the MIDI comms. It's driving me nuts but I'm determined to get to the bottom of this.
@@kkgolf5371 I hope not. I have a Mixtrack platinum and the pads don’t work with the stems currently. Plan to use it for production mostly but $1999 is too rich for my blood. That’s the price of a new MPC. 😓

The layout of the device looks very busy to me, maybe too busy. Which brings me to the issue with stems: as cool as this remixing on the fly is, there comes a point where all this additional functionality becomes just too overwhelming for the average DJ. And quite frankly, the stems workflow on the Rane already looks confusing and complicated. Let's not forget that when Traktor introduced stems (together with remix decks) a decade ago their audience had generally a hard time picking it up. Part of it was of course that you had to use specific stems files in MP4 format. But another reason for sure was that all this extra functionality just became too intricate to be bothered with for the average DJ. And now the competition is moving in the same direction. It's definitely exciting tech but I'm worried about the workflow.
so different - NI's stems required you to purchase specific music and the catalogue was super limited. Not the case with the stems tech that Alogoriddim, Virtual DJ and now Serato have available
@@LonkDonk Well, this is exactly the issue. Now you create all these stems yourself which puts a zillion extra buttons on your mixer. So what initially looks like more freedom of expression actually becomes a limitation because you don't understand your mixer anymore.
