Winter Surfing: New England's Best Kept Secret
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- Meet New England’s dedicated surfers returning to the icy waters off the shores of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island year-round.
Who are the people heading to the beach in a raging nor’easter? What drives them to leave the confines of a warm bed on a frigid Sunday morning?
It’s not about the waves.
It’s a way of life. It’s who they are. The community they create. The people they’re with. Sea smoke and sunrises. The ability to dance and play on the waves gifted by mother ocean.
Epic swells, negative wind chill, windswept ocean... They’ll be out there, and you’re invited along for the ride.

Sweeeeet, gotta love winter surfing, especially for its solitude
definitely, but that blonde guy with the blue pickup who only lets other "locals" aka white dudes with trust funds surf there is a super racist joke and kills the vibe for everyone. he literally screams people out of the water and parking area
@@RosaRosario-rv1he oh man, that isn’t the solitude I was referring too 😔 welcoming everyone is always the way to go
@@newenglandsurftruck3865 definitely. so disappointing to see so much racism and elitism in Massachusetts surfing
@@RosaRosario-rv1he we gotta work together as surfers to make everyone welcome 🙏🌈
My first wave was in 1964 in Kennebunk, and years were spent surfing Plaice Cove, Hampton, Seabrooke, and Rye on the Rocks when it came up. My last wave was a year ago at Playa Maderas in Nicaragua. I'm done, too old, but the memories of surfing New England are vivid.
I just moved to Maine from California, and I saw some NICE waves at Ogunquit and I got choked up.
That mental wrestling match of, "Do I take my suit off now or drive home in it?" hits so close
Put on the poncho and put a towel on the seat. I'd rather marinate in pee for the drive home than change in the cold.
I fish with my wetsuit. Always have a hard time deciding should I take the suit off now or drive home with it on.
@@davethibeault2484 I have the poncho and two "car blankets" for that exact purpose haha
I always think I’m going to dislocate a thumb taking off booties with completely numb hands
definitely! or having to drive home since the white locals at Devereux won't let you surf there. the blonde guy in the blue pickup truck will scream at you if you even attempt to surf there, and if you don't listen to him, he'll slash your tires.
Beautiful and emotional. What surfing should be, but, sadly, crowded city breaks have shown the other side. Respect, enjoy and all the best.
true! especially Devereux. there is a white guy with a blue pickup who is notorious for screaming people out the water. he is very racist. basically a surf nazi
indeed, there's a lot of disrespectful people such as the blonde guy with a blue pickup truck who thinks he owns Devereux beach. he screams people out of the water and slashes tires
@@chadpowers9035 omg! I heard about him. he is really creepy with women...
nice video! I love it
I have been learning to surf in Boston area for the last 14 months and it has been really fun for me! I got a wetsuit and several surfboards and I have been documenting my beginner progression on UA-cam. Beautiful waves, learning to turn, cold sessions, beautiful sunrises and friends to surf with. This video really resonated with me and I really enjoyed watching it. Thanks!
just be careful of that blonde guy with a blue pickup at Devereux. he is very racist and screams people out of the water
@@RosaRosario-rv1he I think I know who that is. really scary guy
@@RosaRosario-rv1heomg that kind sounds scary. be careful fam!
@@emmaolivia2824 the devereux guy makes women feel very unsafe, starting with his wife. I see him screaming at her around down, and honestly I feel bad for her. He screams at other women as well in the water. He is a total misogynist
@@rosspingree6670 that guy isn't even a local. he doesn't even live in marblehead. if he harasses you again, just call the cops. he's done time before and doesn't need another strike. total kook.
Great cinematography, beautiful stories told by a wide range of characters. Made me want to get off my ass and get back in the water soon. I'm going to check the forecast now. Congrats, Greg! Loved it and my daughter couldn't take her eyes off the women getting out there in the cold. All your hard work has paid off!
honestly it's not easy being a female surfer in New England. for example, at Devereux beach in marblehead I got screamed out of the parking lot by a blonde guy with a blue pickup. basically, he patrols the beach and only lets white men surf there. it's disappointing
@@RosaRosario-rv1he Chris the Devereux nazi
January 14,2023 and I’m getting ready to try winter surfing at rye beach for the first time ever. Super stoked after living in New England for 20+ years and trying winter surfing while other people are skiing and snowboarding 🤙
rye is a great spot!
wow!!! now I want to buy a soft top and try my luck at ruggles in Newport
No no no no not a good idea
will you show me how to surf ruggles?@@kent_kast
Amazing stories. I’m from the UK and just beginning my journey surfing and what an important thing I have found to enhance my life. I never even knew people went surfing in winter until the other day. Thank you for making this beautiful film.
Lovely portrait of all of them! I live in The Netherlands, where Autumn and Winter are the surf season too. Cold, but great! :) Keep it up guys and girls!
This is a great little documentary. Beautiful imagery.
Nice cinematography story, Jersey surfer since 1971. Ron of Ron Jon sold me first board Ship Bottom LBI. Enjoy north shore Mass and hidden New England spots. Nothing like winter nor'easter and swells. Surrender to spirit.
Grew up on long island and started surfing in 95, fall came and didnt want to stop, winter came and i was a scuba diver already used to 35 degree water, so i said ill use my dive suits. Back in the mid 90s i was lucky if i saw someone else on the beach, let alone in the water. As the years went on, more and more were out there with me. Although it was nice to see it become normalized, i miss those old days when i was all alone
Beautiful ! Mahalo for sharing the stoke!
Great piece. A secret? Maybe to people who don't live near the coast. I drive 1A quite a bit. Keep it up, Melinda!
Through North Hampton into Rye is my favorite section.
Great work, loved the film.
Wells/Ogt local, Southern Maine
Beautiful documentary guys, all the best to you and plenty of good vibes sent your way from Bali-Indonesia. Keep the stoke alive.
Greg Shea and all. Great images and messages throughout. You all are tough as nails!
Thanks for sharing, everyone, that was very inspirational! I started two months ago (July) and am stoked for my first winter here in Mass (coming from Minnesota). I’ll be thinking of all you guys when I’m out there.
Really Enkjoyed this! From the amazing cinematography to the stories from each surfer. Great job to all involved! You've inspired Me...
Jakob Edwards (my grandson) 3rd generation surfer thanks for the U-tube video and all the family comments..
Great video about winter surfing. 🤙
Me realizing I've been out surfing with a bunch of these people 😱
just be careful of that blonde guy with a blue pickup at Devereux in marblehead, ma. he is a cry baby and screams people out of the water, especially women and people of color
@@RosaRosario-rv1he it's true. he was also very creepy with my underage friend
Fantastic! A great look into cold weather surfing. What grit and dedication... I loved it!
Very nice, stoked
a beautiful film. thank you.
Awesome job, Greg!
Great job, fantastic stories. Well done.
Very well put video. Great job!!!
I absolutely loved this! From the amazing cinematography to the stories from each surfer. Great job to all involved!
me too!
Awesome
just don't try to surf at Devereux, it's a locals only spot, just for local white privileged folks with trust funds. I have screamed people out of the water before and I'll do it again
are you that blonde guy with the blue pickup who screams people out of the water and tried to fight my friend?
yes, that is me. I am the one people call the Devereux nazi. only white men are allowed to surf at my spot
@@chadpowers9035 the blonde guy at that beach is so creepy! so many accusations against him by women
he's an awful human! I saw him attacking some asian surfers before they even went in the water
his name is Chris@@chadpowers9035

what you all speak of is Ohana aloha and stay stoked.
