I grew up surfing in Cape Hatteras , when I was 21 I moved to Alaska, I eventually became a bush pilot always had my board in my plane and would land on the beach when i found waves.I can’t count the hundreds of perfect waves I’ve surfed all by myself in Alaska.
I'm 60 and started surfing in So Cal (Ventura Co.) in 1974. When you said your sponsors said traveling was unmarketable I couldn't believe it. I would say that between 74-79 I learned more about geography and the outside world thru the travel articles in the surf mags than I ever did in school. We cared nothing for contest but devoured the travel issues. Great film, Thank You.

Pneuma1 Lifebreath my buddy who surfs Alaska turnagain bore tide also surfs Lake Michigan. Right now he’s in Hawaii for a few weeks but he surfs year round in Alaska. Ice snow. Don’t matter get thicker neoprene lol

Stick to what you love - no better words spoken. My kids have 2 basic assignments - pursue an education & follow your dreams & passions. We fully supported *their* paths, not what we wanted them to do & it has served them very well.
not many parents have that ethos, insteading having a path laid out for them at birth, only to be disappointed into their kids late teens, or have kids who've ended up down paths, jobs etc...that their parent's wanted them to have.
I started surfing a month ago at the age of 41 after a life changing experience and videos like this want to make me go everyday now. The Weekend soon cant wait too get back out there. Inspirational 🤙
I grew up in NoCal surfing cold water in high school. Moved away to pursue my thing in the mountains. I've rarely surfed since then and I'm pushing 60 now. I've had some fun days on Maui and the rare side trip to Bali in 2003 on my return from the Himalaya. But now I'm in AK chasing steep ski lines in South Central. This has me thinking about getting back into the water. Great films, guys. Cheers.

I can barely surf. Mainly a vert. Skater. I was fortunate enough to surf in Norway, nice waves, just 2 friends and amazing beautiful mountains. Snowed while putting on wetsuits. Great memories.

Just pure goosebumps.... I love the water from being a small kid hitting the surf in South Africa to now hitting the colder shores of Cornwall, Wales etc in my campervan.... Water baby for life and never happier than in the water.
At 4:45 you can see my grandparents store, its the building with the blue roof behind the quonset looking building. Spent many years there in Yakutat. So cool to see this in my recommended and be so surprised to see it featured Yakutat. Im about to go back next week and couldnt be more excited. For anyone wanting to surf in Yak look up Icy Waves surf shop.
@@skysteppes Gotta say I agree, can definitely get crowded. But the beaches are huge and the waves a plenty. The cali bros wouldn't even come up here anyways, they don't have the balls. Only those with the true love for surf would come up here. Yak is a gem and everyone should know and come and support the economy and check out the amazing surf. I tell everyone about it, its almost 2020 time to make it world famous!
I can't surf anymore, my knees are gone, so watching this film is both sweet and sour. What a lovely place to surf. I miss the travel surfing experience so much. this feeling is like waving good bye to that strawberry blonde girl you loved but she breaks up with you. You want to keep it together but you can't. the surfing here is pure.... riding the wave, like the WAY it is to be ridden by the man, the board the skills the capability of the rider and the ridden the experience of movement in the moment of the water and the surfer riding as he will and the wave allows for. Like music like dance like pure meaning of words... nature and self expressed experienced like ANYTHING one could do as apart of and with.. I could watch this wave surfing non-stop. The real-only pure surfing. Surfing with the wave for surfing. not a contest not a comparison. like the real feel of the wind on the skin of your face for a moment. but not just the skin nerve sensation, the whole of all of you surfing the water wave... I mean SOMETHING LIKE THAT! All on its own with you.
There's no place like Alaska. That beginning statement is true about never being satisfied with any other place than Alaska. I went as a young man and commercial fished there, it has stayed at the top of place for me. Alaska is true an amazing place
Surfing is the ultimate goal for these guys but the experience of traveling to a remote destination and enjoying it with good friends is the special part. cool thing about those waves is you can see how the headlands create tranquil pockets so the swells when they can wrap around are just super wrapping and perfect...especially on the lefts... the geography has alot to do with the potential

Great video. I live in Alaska now and never seen anything like this. I've been to some of the greatest surfing spots especially since I grew up on the Ocean in New Jersey. I;ve seen the best wave in Nicaragu. Hawaii. My friends like riding the bore tide. Funny thing is as much as I love surfing and inspired by it and watching. I have never done it.

I do most of my jet skiing in the winter on Canyon Lake in Arizona. The cold weather and water means we have the lake to ourselves.

I lived in Alaska for 2 years and it was the most magical place in my Opinion. I could see why he would love Surfing there.
Used to surf Block Island , 12 miles off the east coast , in the winter.
Intense, with cold ocean temps. and big sharks. Awesome.
