In this video, I unbox the Dragon Ball Manga Box Set and try to read all volumes 1-16. Since I have never read or seen Dragon Ball before, I have NO NOSTALGIA to the series, and I can give my honest thoughts and review on the manga.

Z is the more serious version of dragon ball so it might be better or worse depending on what u prefer.
@@helloimuzumakikira1 DB also got pretty dark and serious, specially the middle and 2nd half. But I see what you mean, the last DB arcs are some of the darkest in the series history, even now.
@@Swampert444 I meant in terms of the hilarity and comedy, it's less frequent in Z. But it makes sense since it started off with really personal/life-threatening villains.
The original "Dragon Ball" was actually supposed to be a gag manga thats why there's pervy moments, if you've seen akira toriyama mostly had gag mangas before dragon ball, some like dr slump. As time passes it became more of a fighting shonen manga
I always kinda loved that about dragonball. It goes from breaking the forth wall and gags left and right. Then as the series continues and Goku gets older Toriyama obviously started taking it more seriously and it started a whole bunch of tropes we see in manga later down the line.
@@FullMetalNull I liked part one better anyway I'd rewatch that rishies jokes were the best he just is amazing before i loved Z GT super just no bulma different voice then I dropped it but that all changed when Naruto attacked I'd rather watch Naruto now I think before it started with me thinking that was the fights were too long but before they didn't bother me I think it's just because it's more emotional because when the earth is about to be destroyed yeah it's emotional but dam could know to do some emotional stuff like not the best but I got invested in the characters the most so notice sensei has something happened to him you feel it just too good clannad more emotional but Naruto with flows song sign made me feel like crying not as much any more because I've listen to it to many times but when I first listen to it amazing but still gets me emotional listening to it now In will rewatch clannad or haruhi in two years same with anohanaWhen shows put me in invested like that much i like to experience them again later down the line naruto I'll wait till i can show my kids when i get them no exceptions i have to try at least because it means so much to me

kinda sad he only read it..the anime version of original dragonball kicks ass with good filler content...like goku getting married and training between the tournaments ...you miss some good training in the manga..its just skipped over so goku being so strong is more of a surprise to us like the others where as in the anime you see him train so is less shocking ..same thing with gohan early on in z...so yeah i prefer that part of the anime...it actually lets us grow with the kid instead of pretend like thats not relevant but for example yamcha and blooma's eventual pointless relationship is so vital to show on panel...hate that

As someone who's been a fan of Dragon Ball for over a decade, I'm happy to see people are still getting into the series! Also, as an fyi, when Dragon Ball was published in Japan, the entire manga (including the "Z" portion) was just called Dragon Ball. So technically, you still have 26 more volumes of Dragon Ball to go. Enjoy the rest of the series! Looking forward to your next review! :D

Interesting to see a manga fan never know about Dragon Ball until now. It's always neat to see a no nostalgic review too. This was a really nice video to watch.
yeah but your not suppose to rush through long shounen ..something i have noticed many people now a days do is they rush through content cause theres so much of it out there that they want to catch up to modern series to be informed or to interact with the community with no fear of spoilers and to start the next one and finish older series and support all the new stuff so it continues on or just buy it and never read it or plan to 10 years from now ...and with dragonball i prefer the anime...its very childish and simple in manga form and the z portion is so boring to read due to lack of comedy...what he did is the worst way to enjoy retain and form a bond with said series...you miss so much...its not always about what is shown said is happening..its about what it means narrative wise...themes messages character development progression or characterization wise..when you rush you miss this..other series you can binge..shounen is about the journey growing up with its basic but well explored ideals and themes...its week to week little growth progress...its not for everyone but kids are meant to watch it and learn as they mature so it is their teacher in a way...your suppose to have nostalgia for a childhood series that helped you get through moments of life or taught you that week how to deal with a issue that came up right then...

I absolutely love the original Dragon Ball. The Piccolo arcs are absolutely amazing and bring up the stakes. Akira Toriyama is a phenomenal writer and artist.

I always preferred DB to DBZ, so this was a fun video to watch :P Don't know how you compare the two yet, but glad you enjoyed the first part of the series! I love how lighthearted and "epic" the moments are, and as you say at the end, the more these "epic moments" happen the less interesting they are, but Z does still have lots of those moments too. My favorite arc in the kid goku sagas is definitely pilaf and red ribbon superhour

I love both these box sets. When I was younger I enjoyed Z more, but as adult I grew to enjoy og dragon ball more than Z. Dragon Ball Super manga is something I read as a hardcore fan, but the new guy doing it doesn’t touch the original author’s work.

I saw this one and got scared half way thru the video because I realized you weren’t gonna finish the series in this video. Then I checked the date and was like “Oh, this was uploaded a month ago. I can relax, he’s had a month the DBZ video probably already exists” then I go to your channel AND ITS NOT OUT! (I’m not rushing you this was just my initial reaction. I think it’s weird to read One Piece before finishing Dragon Ball since DB was the direct inspiration for One Piece but to each their own)

as a life long Dragon Ball fan I absolutely loved seeing you get excited for one of my favorite manga series. I think manga/anime fans like to dog on Dragon Ball because it IS influential and a cornerstone of the genre. If you are on top you are gonna get some haters.

I feel like I'm the only person in the world who likes to read manga slowly and takes like 2 hours to finish a typical volume. I'm always so surprised when someone says that they read through a certain volume in 20 minutes for example.
I use to read like 7 books less than a day. When use to check them out at my school library lol now that I buy manga I take my time since mangas are expensive and I don't want to wait until the other set is deliver.

I randomly stumbled on volume 1 of Dragon Ball (a French version of it) on a shelf at a Wal-Mart when I was a kid, and decided to buy it some 20 years ago. Little did I know that series would change my life in terms of my liking into Japanese culture and anime in general. Over the year, I kept buying new volumes until I eventually got all 42. It's amazing when you find a series you know nothing about that just happen to be very good.

in the manga its not split up..dbz just is chapter 195...but in the west they split it up in 2002 for sales i guess by putting in a z making it seem like its own series to appeal to idiots

I'm really glad you're enjoying Dragon Ball! This is my 2nd favorite manga of all time , and it's good to see you having a good time reading it. Tho I understand some minor "gripes" you have with it, which are perfectly fine, it's nice to see someone be able to see Dragon Ball for what it is, without big nostalgia glasses. And it's cool to see that someone who knew nothing about the series, be able to enjoy something I love as well. Also if you wanna review another manga, I recommend Mob Psycho 100, the art isn't that "great", but I think it compliments the story, and the story is really captivating, it's also my favorite manga of all time.
I feel like the originals are a bit underrated and they are great in my opinion! Z is amazing but I feel like the latter half of Z isn't as good. For me the show peaks between... (spoilers ahead)
Late Red ribbon army arc - End of Freeza arc
For me dragonball z started getting iffy with majin buu. I actually appreciated the Cell arc because it brought back the red ribbon army and all of the androids felt nostalgic when you remember android 8. I'd argue Cell's arc was my favorite personally because so much happens with the characters. Buu had some great moments and I appreciate them bringing some of the mystical stuff from the original dragonball back, buu himself wasn't a well thought out villain and I felt Toriyama lost his touch with the characters. Makes sense because apparently Toriyama admitted he was basically miserable when writing the buu arc because he just wanted the series to end.
@@FullMetalNull Don't get me wrong, I really like the cell arc, especially the time travel stuff. But it just didn't have the same exhilarating, addictive feel anymore. It didn't feel like we raised the stakes(which is due to doing it too quickly in previous arc, went from strongest fighters on earth to strongest fighter in the universe in basically one arc. So then they had to invent stronger beings but it just didn't feel like they were stronger, at this point they should be destroying planets from regular fighting but they don't.)
When you read “is this finally the end of Goku?!” That was latest chapter out. With it being a monthly series Toriyama hadn’t even thought of Z.
Currently collecting all the 3 in 1s of Dragonball, loved the original Dragonball and Z anime as a kid but rereading the early arcs now its weird how much I forgot about it. And yes volume 1 is incredibly pervy haha

Dragon ball and dragon ball z have such different feels between each other they barely feel like the same series. People shouldn't say one is better than the other, it's like comparing bananas and apples (it really is subject to people's opinion)
Dragon Ball at the beginning is very different from the end of Dragon Ball Z, but if you read it all back to back you can feel the tone and structure of the story slowly changing into what it eventually became. I remember seeing King Piccolo squat down and start screaming for a full minute to power up and I was like, bam, that’s it. It’s finally crossed the threshold into being all about the action and much less about the adventure.
Not that that’s a bad thing, I actually love DB and DBZ equally and choose to think of them as one long story, since they weren’t originally made to be separate series.

I have watched the anime as a child, but my memory about the whole plot is not the best, so maybe I should reconsider reading the manga now :)

I loved to see a review from a new fan, most new gen fans dont give dragon ball a chance because its a trend now to diss it for naruto which both are amazing. So im glad to see you pick it up I actually know a ton of anime fans who havent watched it either. Also dragon ball and DBZ manga wise have different things going for them dragon ball is a little lighter an has a better balance of action and story telling then Z is kinda like a faster paced adventure.

I think a lot of people who say DBZ is better probably saw that anime first as a kid. But the whole series is good, just different at first. DB started more comedic, coming off Toriyama's gag manga experience and was targeted at a slightly older audience than his previous Dr. Slump. It wasnt an immediate hit in Japan either but it became more popular in the first tournament arc due to focusing more on action and less on adventuring.
It should also be said that the original manga wasnt divided into DB and DBZ. That division came from the anime which happened because the anime ratings werent great and Toriyama's editor attributed it to the producer who also worked on the Dr. Slump anime. So they replaced the producer and rebooted the anime with a sequel series. But the more serious tone and action oriented story started way before that with King Piccolo, maybe even with the second tournament.
I want every human on this planet that does not know a thing about Dragon Ball to do a video like this

There’s so many different parts of the series. There is the adventurous first two volumes then there’s the tournament series, where Goku trains with Kuririn with the turtle master. That lasts about two and a half volumes. Then there is the shenanigans with the red ribbon army and him trying to find his grandpas four star ball. After he defeated the army he joins the tournament again. Kuririn then gets killed by the Demon King Piccolo after the tournament and Tenshinhan and Chazuo, (contestants of tournament) try to find the demon king. Goku almost dies then he goes to the Karin sanctuary to train for the fight between him and Piccolo. He gets stronger, eats a Senzu bean and gets a new Kinto’un, the flying cloud. The warriors get resurrected and finally defeat piccolo. After that Goku is a grown up and enters the tournament again and defeats Demon Jr, (Possible son of Piccolo), and saves the world.
Long story short, this was a killer story

Got into DB a while back, I loved it for its gags and fighting, I only watched the show, never really wanting to read the manga, but after hearing how good it was, I wanted to see for myself, I went to Amazon and ordered vol.1 of the VIZ paperback edition, the ones in this video, but I ordered the singles of them, not the entire box set, and after my first read I found it better than the anime, even though it was the least censored out of the 7 versions of English there were and some moments were pretty inappropriate, I got used to it cause it was originally supposed to be a gag manga that turned into a fighting manga, it was a great read, writing this ik I want all 16, so I’m ordering vol.2 and vol.3, and I’m betting they’ll be great reads.

This is my favorite series in all of fiction. I do have nostalgia but even so it's personally still my favorite today. I'm glad you enjoy it and I'd love to see a Dragon Ball Z video.
But after you finish all of it you should experience more of the series with the anime, movies etc.

It's such a terrific series and surprisingly underrated, at least in terms of the manga given that most of us here most likely grew up on the anime and never really gave the manga a chance. I was certainly one of those people. Bruce Faulconer's score in the original dub really made the series for me. He just had a way of capturing the feel of an epic action story, imbuing the characters with the sense of true badassery with his iconic soundtracks.
Still, I'm very happy I went back and read Dragonball in manga form. Toriyama's a genius at drawing manga. His panel-layouts are something to be behold. It makes Dragonball a thoroughly engaging read. For anyone who isn't into reading comics and wants to get into one, I highly recommend Dragonball as a beginner's manga. The excellent structure of Toriyama's panels makes it a friendly experience for new readers to get hooked onto, for sure

i would recommend manga but many westerns seem to only read to be up to date on series when the anime takes too long to adapt it adding filler and drawing out scenes and my biggest issue is manga readers in the west miss the subtly of the series cause they don't know what to feel or what to focus on an just speed through it to get to the best moments...they just want to be up to date..which pisses me off...

Innocent, happy, intuitive, creative, idealistic, imaginative, future oriented, airheaded, dreamer, pure of heart, soft hearted, perceptive in combat, never gives up, naive, childlike, and goofy. Goku us the shonen MC modern blueprint and inspired the later ones we see today like Luffy, Gon Freecss, Naruto who acts just like him while still having their own characters. Definitely read and show us Z. It's amazing and you'll have a better experience now since you read the series properly and read DB first. Can't wait for it, welcome to the fandom.
