Still I think his Sacrifice as Majin Vegeta is a more dignified representation of how much he's changed compared to...this. I must say as funny as that scene was, when taken completely out of context it just makes Super look even more ridiculous than it is (and it's already pretty ridiculous as is).

The first volume of Z is incredibly thin due to the manga's unique release situation. Originally there wasn't a DBZ manga, DBZ was a term exclusively used for the anime series. Since the DBZ anime came here first, before the manga, most Dragon Ball manga releases split the series at the same point as DB, and DBZ are split in the anime. This means that they moved two chapters from volume 17 of Dragon Ball (Volume 1 of Z), to Volume 16, to match the anime.

Loved his reaction to frieza: that’s more or less everybody’s reaction to his design. His original dub voice didn’t really help him either, but it did become iconic for the character.

And, the major difference: it's not drawn by Toriyama and it shows.

Fun fact, the reason your volume 1 of the Z portion of the manga is so thin is because in the original Japanese Tankoubon releases, the 23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai (fight with Piccolo Jr) bled into volume 17 of the original Dragon Ball manga. When Viz did their translations and split the series into two, they added those last few chapters of the fight with Piccolo into Dragon Ball volume 16, so the “Z” manga can start where the Dragon Ball Z anime starts at (with chapter 195, the introduction of Raditz).
Also I really enjoyed these videos. Glad that you enjoyed the series. Dragon Ball as a whole is a fun time (personally I’m a fan of the manga over the anime adaptations myself, but if you like anime, they’re worth a watch as well ).

You're not missing much with super, if you were disappointed with Majin Boo, then prepare for several steps down from even Boo.
I would recommend the dragon ball 1 volume side manga Jaco the galactic patrolman, definitely worth a read. Also some of the anime TV specials, the Bardock special and Trunks special in Japanese of course.
Beerus is a cool character introduced in the Battle of Gods movie which is worth a watch but anything after I wouldn't bother

DEFINITELY read Super, it isn’t a spin off, it takes place between the Buu Saga and the end of Z, great read!!! I started reading it after the Super anime ended and it’s what got me into reading manga in the first place!!! I recommend it if you liked the OG and Z.
Super is more of an ALTERNATE TIMELINE. It disregards the end of Z and contradicts DBZ like CRAZY!
@@great159 What are you talking about? The only contradiction is that Vegeta’s characterization basically reverts back to Cell Saga, with him needing to be better than Goku (plus a couple of minor retcons like the potara earrings, but nothing lore-breaking).

Actually. Until the buu saga,the Dragon Balls could only revive someone once. I guess it was to make ir easier that Toriyama chose to make it unlimited. Fans sure do love the characters
I mean the task of reviving someone isn't simple and each time they need to do it the task becomes a bit more difficult, so it's not "of no consequence" there are consequences...but, it does certainly make death a lot less meaningful. I suppose I still prefer having one story with an established canon explanation for how characters can die and come back later as opposed to how American comics handle this (just reboot it and pretend the death never happened).

There are certain deaths, like when Cell kills Trunks that are presented as super dramatic, but Dende already replaced Kami so they can easily wish him back with the new Dragon Balls, so the characters have little reason to be so sad about it.
The earth's dragon balls are still limited to reviving one person once, the namekian dragon balls are the only ones that can bypass that (besides the Super DBs (dbs exclusive) and the Black Star DBs (gt exclusive))

If you wanna read Super, I don't know if I recommend you reading the manga first. In the beginning, the Dragon Ball Super manga was just a promotional manga for the anime, which means the first arc is super short because it was rushed to hell since it's an arc we had already seen in a movie. The second arc isn't even in the manga, you gotta go watch the movie instead. The third arc is a little bit more fleshed out, but still feels very promotional. The fourth arc is when it starts to feel more independent, and there's debate about if the anime version is better or not..the fifth arc also feels very rushed, a thousand times better in the anime. The sixth arc again, isn't even in the manga, you gotta go watch a movie for that one, and the last two arcs are actually feeling pretty good in the manga.
So in conclusion, the only arcs that are worth reading the manga are the seventh and eighth arc, you're better just watching the anime.

Super is more of a continuation than a spinoff, but I'd only recommend it if you really loved the second half of DB. Although it's made with the help of Toriyama, he's not either the artist or has the main control of the plot of the series and it shows.
I recommend watching dragon ball gt in Japanese it may not have a manga but in my personal opinion it's the best ending to the dragon ball series

I started watching it and reading it a year ago but I started liking the series 2 years ago am I considered a dbz fan?
I like reading more because the staredowns are quicker and there's no stuff about what the other characters are doing far away during the fights
I remember back in the first few volumes of Dragon Ball Z is that old art style they used to do for Goku and Vegeta kinda miss it

@@hextorm2 the only thing that was regarded by toriyama as alternate timelines were the DB/DBZ Movies, GT can arguably be so but its moreso referred to as a side-story; DBH and Xenoverse are just video-games and have no connection to the main story whatso ever, it would also be contradictory asf to call them alternate timelines

Honestly the boo arc and Android were my favorite because compared to the others the world actually felt under threat, and YOOO the transformations were sooo cool and fun.
Cell was awesome but because i didn't feel like there was a real threat, it didn't feel as good as it should have.

Definitely read Super! It's not a spinoff. It's a continuation. It also seems like it's the start of something greater. The amount of world building that they do in Super is crazy. They can literally make stories for decades with what they introduced.
In the same way that the Super anime and GT are "continuations."
I’m surprised you weren’t a fan of any of the main dbz villains. My favorite was Buu. Fat Buu’s development with Mr Satan was great and I also liked the destructive childish personality of kid Buu. I recommend checking out the UA-cam channel called Doraball for good analysis videos on DBZ.

@@CaptainRAIAN Yeah that's another huge trope of Dragon Ball: characters who are introduced as villains eventually join the good guys, usually after the arrival of a new enemy who is more powerful than either side. Most of Goku's allies were either rivals or enemies of Goku at one point. Bulma, the character he meets first, smashes into him with her car, then shoots him with a pistol. Yamcha tries to rob him, Krillin is Roshi's only other student and is initially his rival during their training. Then there's Tien and Chiaotzu who were students of Master Shen, Roshi's rival. Then Piccolo turns good after Raditz and the other Saiyans show up.
Later Dabura pulls a 180 and tries to kill Buu once he realizes that Buu is a threat to them all, then after dying he actually ends up in heaven. Buu himself forms a friendship with Mr. Satan and fights against his evil counterpart to stop him from hurting people, and even Kid Buu is revived as Uub. In fact, when you really think about it even Goku himself was sent to Earth with the original mission of wiping out all of humanity, but forgot his mission after his head injury. So essentially every character in Dragon Ball was a villain at one point or another, and most of them became heroes by the end.

This! Avoid the Dragon Ball Super tv show (unless you later want to see some of the post-Resurrection F fights animated.)
Hey Raian, just letting you know, the main there's technically 3 different main continuation of Dragon Ball past the end of the original manga, with slightly different branches of paths but with the same outline, but everything besides the outline is up to their interpretation: Toei Animation (For DBS Anime and DBZ: Battle of Gods/Resurrection F, these two minutes is basically the first 1-28 episodes of Dragon Ball Super, but in movie form, and ofcourse the movies came first.)
So the difference between the movies and the redapation of the arcs, is going to boil down to schedule and production time, so if you watch the movies and you watch the anime's re-adaption of the arcs, you'll notice a big drop in quality. That's because, it's a very rare case of toei animation rushing out Dragon Ball Super anime as fast as possible. By only having 2-3 months to work on it. Usually for anime you need to have a pre-production time of 6-8 months and usually you also announce your anime project 6-8 months in advance, with atleast 1:30 min or longer teaser. (To show it's in a healthy production schedule) but toei literally only showed a 30 seconds teaser 1 month BEFORE the DBS anime came out.)
But there are some noticeable differences atleast in battle of god movie vs anime version. In anime version they put more effort into showing why it's called "Battle of Gods." So you'll see some impressive things happening there.
As for DBS Manga, DBS manga kind of goes the same path as DBS Anime, specifically for Battle Of Gods arc.
And if you ever decide to read DBS manga, keep in mind, resurrection F arc is skipped, because there were already a spin off before the resurrection F movie aired, to give a sneak peak of the movie in manga form. So it was meaningsless to re-adapt it into manga form again.
Also the DBS Mangaka isn't toriyama this time, as in, he isn't the one doing the panelling or choreography. His job is to supervise and the one doing the panelling and choreography and all that stuff is an artist named "Toyotaro."
What Akira Toriyama does is give a very veeeery vague "outline" which he gives to toei animation and toyotaro, and they can then give their own interpretation of anything besides the outline that they have to follow.
My own personal suggestion to you is the more time consuming answer: Watch both BoG movie and resurrection F movie and then if you prefer to read the DBS manga instead of watching the anime, then go and do that.
But you'll definitely notice differences between the anime version and the manga version. There are some things that doesn't exist in one over the other.

The “Cell Arc” is known as the Cell Saga. Also, DBS isn’t a spin off.
Arc = Saga, the terms are interchangeable. I think "arc" is more generic, because it refers to any kind of a story arc in any story, whereas Saga is more often used by fans of the English Dub, but either one works. I suppose the Cell Arc/Saga is truthfully a bunch of smaller arcs including the Trunks Arc, the Android Arc, the Imperfect Cell Arc, and the Cell Games Arc, but whatever, it's all part of one big story with a clear beginning and ending.

I literally just got 3:57 minutes in and I don’t know if you pointed this out I wasn’t really paying attention but that “it’s over 9000” was a error in the anime so it was supposed to be “it’s over 8000”
I wonder why they added "Z" to the manga series, when it originally was only added to the show adaptation.
Nonetheless, the mangas were my first introduction to anime/manga culture, and it was one of my childhood's highlights for sure. The edition of Dragonball I have contains 42 volumes, which I'm surprised can fit in 26 volumes as big as shown in the vid.
Edit: I just realized that the volume 1 you read happens to be my equivalent of volume 17, which is after the timeskip. Seems like they separated the series in two, which is interesting.

Well im sure someone has said this by now but...”Dragonball Super” is not a spin-off series it’s a “continuation” of the Dragonball series taking place between the 10 year time jump after the defeat of buu but before the fight with uub....and the whole “Vegeta dancing scene” is justification of how strong Beerus is that even Vegeta “my favorite character by the way” is reduced to doing something so against his character....but that showcases how strong and terrifying Beerus is

Im surprised you didnt like the main Z villains, buu is my least favorite but i still think he is cool, frieza is one my favorite villains in fiction and Cell is actually my favorite villain in fiction, he is an amazing character for me.
Actually after thinking about it Cell was pretty alright. I liked a lot of the villains, but most of them became good guys lol

I feel like i need to explain a few things:
While i understand freeza's forms may look funny if looked in a certain way, he was supposed to give that sadistic space gecko villain vibe. i mean look at his joker-like smile and when he laughs, he's supposed to give this madman space emperor vibe despite some of his forms looking kinda dumb. Toriyama sensei even went to explain why freeza's last form is compact and less bulky/scary compared to his previous forms.
Yes, i agree that the stakes mean a lot less when you know that the characters can be resurrected later, but there are still a certain amount of danger to be felt during the Z timeline. Especially during the android arc when all super saiyan 1 forms were unable to match with the androids speed/strength.
While i also agree that buu doesn't look menacing enough as a villain, his latter forms/fractions/spawns are clearly more evil than the original fat buu. It was later told that kid buu was the pure form of majin buu before he merged with everyone he absorbed.
You don't necessarily have to read dragonball super manga to know about beerus, it's easier to watch DBZ: Battle of Gods (2013) movie. It's a good prequel before reading DB Super and connects directly to the end of the Z manga. That's my only nitpick so far, but i'm glad you enjoyed dragonball as a whole.

@@thms6833 If you're only looking at Battle of Gods, it's definitely bad. But try looking at some of the better arcs like Future Trunks, Tournament of Power, and especially Moro.
@@anneliselim602 I suggest you give DBS manga a try. Just skip Battle of Gods and jump straight into Universe 6.
I enjoyed OG Dragon Ball more since it just ended up being powerlevel stuff for Z where there was more strategy into battles in pre Z.
Dragon Ball Super as far as I am aware doesn't have everything from the original script Toriyama wrote to the anime production so a lot of things skipped and not adapted there compared to anime. But if you like action as it is in Z then I guess you will enjoy Super too. There is also very big tournament arc.
I'm proud of you for how fast you noticed the DBZ cycle: First, Goku is unable to fight for a long period of time for some reason (he's dead, he's on another planet, he's healing from his wounds, or he's training) and in the meantime, minor villains arrive and wreck havoc, but get into a series of skirmishes with the supporting cast of characters who are forced to work together to fight against a common threat (characters like Krillin, Gohan, Piccolo and Vegeta for example). Eventually a major villain arrives who is in another league of power, and once he has achieved his final form and the strongest supporting characters are all defeated, just before the villain kills everyone, Goku finally returns just in time to save someone, fight the villain, and barely manage to win at the cost of serious injuries, before the cycle continues again. That's Dragon Ball Z in a nutshell.
Vegeta never reached his final form, the buu arc started with a high school stuff and went to a tournament, goku doesn’t get massively injured against cell and actually loses and no one was waiting for goku to come to save the day in the buu arc, also in cell arc there are two minor villians that come up so it subverted the one time minor villians and once the 2nd minor villians come they barely wreck anything and the cell arc didn’t start with goku being unable to fight the same goes for pretty much every arc so basically the cycle gets broken many times
@@dinogt8477 1) Vegeta DID transform into a Great Ape, albeit it happened AFTER Goku arrived. At the time, Great Ape was Vegeta's final form and Vegeta as a Great Ape was the strongest known fighter.
2) Goku DIED against Cell, just like he died against Raditz, and I said one of the possible reasons Goku is gone is that he is dead.
3) They were waiting for Goku to return to Earth for a day, although not because the Earth was in danger. The Buu arc was a bit odd, I think the Great Saiyaman stuff was a break from the typical DBZ cycle. The cycle started again with the tournament because they noticed Supreme Kai, Kabito, Spopovich, and Yamu, all of which were unknown new characters with higher power levels than normal humans. Piccolo was initially really sacred of Supreme Kai so for a minute it seemed like he was going to be the new villain.
4) I will defend the Cell arc for being an example of the DBZ Cycle. Goku was removed on 3 occasions. First, he got the heart virus and Yamcha flew him away from the battlefield to Goku's house where he was out of commission for a while.
Then, once he recovered, he promptly took all the Saiyans to the Lookout to train in the time chamber. Vegeta and Trunks went in first, but while they were training Goku and Gohan stayed on the Lookout. Goku insisted on not fighting Cell yet, because he knew he was no match for him until he trained. He only warped down to the battlefield to warp Tien and Piccolo away before they died.
Finally, Goku was killed by Cell to save the Earth from his self destruction.
In all 3 cases, Goku was out of commission for a long time. In the third case, he technically stayed dead for years, and even when he returned he kept his halo and was only permitted to visit Earth for a day before leaving AGAIN.
I will full admit that not EVERY arc plays out exactly the same, but there's no denying that there is an uncanny pattern events seem to follow 90% of the time.

@@Chicky-yy7nk It comes down to a matter of personal preference I think. The fans obviously get passionate about what the superior version is, but the author is just thrilled to see his manga get a big budget anime adaptation, even if takes some liberties.

I read the original dragon ball series over the past 2 months due to this idea. I loved the idea of going into this manga with no nostalgia attached like he said in the first video about dragon ball. I legit knew nothing about Dragonball or DragonBall Z and I have to say, its definitely worth the read! I enjoyed it so much. Character development, twists, and the message through out the whole manga, was an absolute fun read. I'm not sure if ill read Dragonball Super still, but, ill just say, the manga makes me wanna experience the anime now. Also, was my first ever manga series I read, and cant wait to experience more. Thanks for the inspiration man!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this to you but on UA-cam is a channel called teamfourstar and they did DBZ abridged. They took they anime and created a fantastic parody of the show that i honestly enjoy more than the actual anime. I know, sacrilegious, but it's worth watching if you've already seen the anime/read the manga.
