Only movie I've gone to see more than once in the theaters in my life.

I am not a fan of the Chani actress. She just looks angry and constipated as "acting."

The changes to Chani were a little much for me.... the film is stunning, I was basically tearing up the first half... the work scene was better than I could've ever expected.
But angry Chani without the grief of losing Leto II is not satisfying.... I have no idea how they could possibly bring her narrative around to the woman we know from the back half of Messiah...
I had hoped she was pregnant and would lose the child during the fighting... but obviously lost hope as she abandoned Paul in the closing moments.

I do agree about their child, but they wrote themselves into not having Leto II with the Alia decision.
Dune Messiah is my big concern too! It'll be a big regression for film Chani to turn up by Paul's side at the beginning now as per the book. I've got a feeling Villeneuve is going to take elements of Children of Dune (such as Alia's story, also gives Jessica a role), and mix it up with Messiah for his sequel. He'll work his Chani back in that way. I'm not convinced about how good that'll be though!

@@DarthNerdus1 yup, I'm very concerned about how he's going to wrangle messiah.
Leaving Alia out also throws her role in messiah into a totally different place...

That's why I think he's going to put her Abomination storyline in. Especially as he cast Anya Taylor Joy, you don't waste her on a cameo so she's going to have a pretty big role. You also get to bring Skarsgard back in a small way, and Lady Jessica, who Villeneuve is a fan of.
No idea where that would leave Irulan and Chani though!

Great review of an amazing film. I'm also a fan of the 1984 David Lynch film, with both benefitting from fantastic soundtracks.
Denis Villeneuve has saved sci-fi for me. In recent years, with a few exceptions, sci-fi has suffered from being either too pretentious (Interstellar, Tenet), too bleak (Blade Runner 2049, Annihilation, Alien Covenant and Prometheus), or just not very good (Ad Astra, Rebel Moon and the Three Body Problem). Arrival and Dune 1 and 2 have been exceptional, with honorary mentions to Edge of Tomorrow and The Martian.
Hopefully the MCU and DCEU bubbles have finally burst, and there might be more quality sci-fi in the future... but I'm not holding my breath. At least we have Dune 3 to look forward to, and I can't wait. And I look forward to your review of it...

Thank you so much! I agree, there's a lot of middling to bad sci-fi around. Interstellar I enjoy (mainly visuals and score) but it's riddled with issues, Blade Runner 2049 looks gorgeous but says nothing, and yeah those Aliens prequels are best left forgotten! As for Rebel Moon, well, I've done that 😂
I've not seen the Three Body Problem yet, but I've not heard overly positive things so it's been pushed far down the list. On Dune 3, I'm both nervous and excited, as Messiah is my favourite of the novels and I don't feel it translates terribly well to the screen. But Villeneuve's built up a good amount of credit with the two he's done thus far, so there's reason to be positive! Pity we have to wait a few years for it.
