The Body: An Outstanding Episode of Television
Переглядів 1,7 тис.Місяць тому
The Body is a fantastic, visceral and hard hitting episode. It's not just a great hour of Buffy, but of television in general. The Body transcended beyond creator Joss Whedon's intentions of being an expression of the more mundane aspects of grief, and has become a cathartic experience. I think the other comic episode of Angel (with underlying serious themes, of course) that holds up really well is Spin the Bottle. But then, I’m partial to bottle episodes (no pun intended!) and magic alteration stories, like Tabula Rasa on Buffy. But yeah, this is easily one of the most memorable and creative, and of course hilarious episodes in the whole Buffyverse. And I’ll admit that my favorite line is “I’m gonna tear you a new puppet-hole, bitch!” 😁

    This episode got me so bad. It was so unexpected and real. My mother walked in to my grandmother's house (my mother's mother) and found her lifeless in the entry hall... when I watched this episode, I could feel that horror and sorrow. More than any monster, this episode shows the dread we all have, if we are to walk in and find our loved one has passed...

      Yes, this episode is one of the first things I thought about when my mother died a few years ago, shortly before the pandemic. I’m not young (I was nearly 60 at the time), and it was at the end of a long, lingering deterioration from Alzheimer’s, but it still felt so relevant. I wasn’t able to go to her funeral, which was too far away, but my two daughters went, and my sister asked if I wanted to prepare something for one of them to read on my behalf. I did, and in it I included the quote from Tara’s dialogue about how “it’s always sudden,” which I’d always found poignant and moving. Probably only my younger daughter, who is my fellow Buffy fan in the family, recognized the reference, but we never talked about it.

    It was an incredible piece of television. The best depiction of grief ever shown in a tv show. SMG'S acting here was off the charts, it is criminal this episode was never give any awards, it should be retrospectively awarded. An amazing piece of work from start to finish. One of the best episodes not only in Buffy The Vampire Slayer, but of any tv series ever.

    • @literaterose6731
      @literaterose6731 12 днів тому

      This is literally what I always say about this episode-that it is one of the best pieces of art in all of television. It’s the only episode of Buffy that is truly “un-Buffy like” (for lack of a better way to put it), and stands on its own as having the feel of a filmed stage play. There’s not even anything supernatural in the episode except for the brief vampire encounter at the end, and even that has a much more gritty, raw feel than the usual choreographed fight scenes. In Buffy, the “real world” is not the norm; that brief bit of the supernatural at the end is “regular” life intruding on the tragic unreality feeling of the events of the episode. It never stops being powerful and heartbreaking, and I’ve honestly never seen anything else quite like it.

Nailed the aesthetic, nailed the mix of whimsy and brutality, dialogue was well written, character arcs were solid, characters were likeable. I've seen people criticize the vault tec motivation for spoilers, but I think it makes perfect sense if you don't stupidly think they are just after money but instead total power and control, it is also in line with established lore.
