Surprisingly, the Golden Grain Inn from Against the Cult of the Reptile God module was similar to Call of Cthulu's Innsmouth Hotel. The denizens of Innsmouth try to kill/capture you when you rent a room at the hotel. And Innsmouth, like Orlane, is under the thumb of a cult dedicated to a Deep One.
I do not believe this to be correct. Sahuagin can be found on p. 84 of the original AD&D Monster Manual, published in 1977. The Sahuagin modules (U1 - 3) are published later, but the Sahuagin were in existence.
I was working on a video for the D3 Mod, but it was a bigger project than I expected. D3 is an incomplete module. The DM needs to fill in a lot of details. I was going to include a map and details of the Drow City that was published in a Dragon Mag (issue #295?); still need to read it. As well as include a fan made mod D4. Then the OGL Debacle happened, and I got pissed off at WotC. So... I have done a lot of preliminary work on the video, so I should not let it go to waste, but, like I said, it is a much bigger project than I expected, and I am still pissed off at WotC.
Unfortunately, not soon. I view the D3 Mod as incomplete. There is a lot of details that needs to be filled out. I am trying to find material (such as Dragon Mag #298) that fills in some of those missing details.
Nice video. I was never terribly interested in Kua-toa as villains. I felt they were not as iconic as the giants or drow. Maybe i'd have prefered them be troglodytes and a bit less technically advanced. but maybe thats just me. Some animals make scary hybrids, some don't. a Lizardman is scary. a fishman is not.
@@RPGmodsFan good point. i know i appreciated "the lost city" more, once I knew of "red nails". But yeah, I've never tried Lovecraft. I do like that the early DnD writers paid appropriate homage to the fantasy writers who preceded them.
@@RPGmodsFan are you calling it infamous because they omitted Tolkien? I'm actually ok with that. Tolkien was also drawing on those who came before him and not mentioning him was probably an attempt to avoid more legal troubles.
@@smithryansmith Yes, because Mr. Gygax omitted Tolkien, probably because TSR was sued by the Tolkien Estate. (i.e. They already had legal trouble from them.)
Misplaced in this module, IMO. If the map showed the encounter area on the banks of a vast subterranean sea, that would have lent verisimilitude to their placement, but they are just dropped in the middle of the map, and really do not seem to have any real purpose in the overall narrative arc.
I would not take Gygax's Underdark map as "gospel", and create one of my own. I would make the Underdark 3 Dimensional, instead of the 2D it is depicted as in the D Modules.
@@swirvinbirds1971 Yeah, you're right. The Underdark was EG term for the Underworld in his FR setting. I guess I subconsicously used the term (instead of Underworld), since I like it better.

Oh wow. I did not see that connection between Lovecraft and the N1 Module.
He didn't use Shaugin because they were not invented at the time. They make their 1st appearance in D&D in 1982 while D2 was punlished in 1978.

I just replace these with Deep Ones if they ever crop up in game.

I had to look up the definition of that word. :-)
