My dad is a huge fan of Genesis and Phil so I listened to it a lot growing up. When Ghost did this cover, my jaw dropped through the floor and I was instantly blown away. They did an amazing job and would love to hear them cover more songs, not necessarily from Phil/Genesis, but maybe other 70s/80s bands as well.

I agree that Phil collins and Genisis are a legend in the music industry. This reminds me of all the TV evangilists. Back when this song was done they were everywhere. Jesus love is free.
Hypocritical christians are still everywhere, pushing dfalse ideology like racism and bigotry - and plenty of them are still on TV as politicians and all that now, rather than just being TV evangelists. Glad that Ghost covered this song to point out the hypocrisy in a new era! I love Genesis, but I love that Ghost did an even more rockin' cover of this! Rock covers of Genesis songs are among my favorites...
it's actually a shame that people never heard this amazing song before Ghost covered it... Genesis was such a Great band. Phil was a great rocker back in the day
Yesterday, I heard Land of Confusion on the radio, but had only ever heard the Disturbed cover before. I also heard the Ghost cover of this song yesterday. It was incredibly ironic that each song search brought me to Genesis. I knew who Genesis was, just never really listened to their stuff. I only really knew Phil Collins solo stuff and Peter Gabriel’s solo stuff. Great music!
The backlash from the Far Right Church was pretty nasty. And Phil having moved to Florida made him an attainable target of death threats. The band had to submit an apology and yet the song is dead on subject.

This is my favorite music video of all time, primarily because of how relatable all the stock characters that show up in the chorus at 0:50 and again at 1:40. Having grown up in the church, each character is identifiable. For example, the family in the orange is obviously the head of the church, with the father (Phil Collins) being the ringleader and his son an enthusiastic “cradle Christian” who will get sent off to college to study theology and come back as an atheist. The father of the blue family is the trustee and who probably embezzles money, and although his sons in the blue ties also grew up in the church, at least one will end up gay and the other will end up doing drugs. The little purple girls are the ones that the congregation will think of as cute because they know all of the words…despite having no idea what the words mean. The keyboardist is the youth pastor who tries his best to make church hip and relatable, bless his heart. And the older couple down front in the white? They’ve been going to this same church for 30 years…more as an obligation than anything profound. If you grew up in the church, try to tell me I’m wrong about any of this?
@@iamqqqqqqq Did the Wife in the Older couple warble like crazy when she sang? If so I think we went to the same church. However, the alternate version of the son in college is he falls into hyper -Calvinism, which may be a bigger problem!

this song has the most moving and powerful emotionally and physically and amazing chorus ever. it is so genius. and that is it's background music and in the singing by phil which is so powerful and emotional and beautiful. also i love the bridge towards the end. it is stunning and very moving and beautiful also. i also love the cynical and funny lyrics. there were a lot of things like this back in the early '90s bc in the same year there was a dire straits song about this same topic which made fun of televangelists also and in 1992 there was a movie about this called leap of faith with steve martin. so all these things must have been made bc of the tammy baker and jim baker pta scandal that happened in the '80s.

Today Tobias Forge of Ghost just released this song. Today is Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023.
I agree a 100% with you Ghost is kickass band!
Same man. I have great memories of listening to this album with my dad on a road trip. This was definitely my fav song. When Ghost covered this and did it well... amazing.
Did you show your Dad the Ghost cover?
@@lactobacillusprobiotic7029 I think the video might be a little much for him but I told him to listen to the audio version instead 😂😂😂

Heard this song many many years ago, the Ghost remake is a damn good one 👍

All Hail Ghost 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Congratulations to Genesis on getting the Ghost bump!
Pretty sure Genesis is way above some shifty band with a singer who sounds terrible.
Genesis are legends ghost is nowhere on their level
it's actually a shame that people never heard this amazing song before Ghost covered it...
Never heard of ghost until I came here to listen to this song again 😂

THOSE LYRICS NEVER DIE 🤘🏻
Probably one of the most under-rated songs ever written.
The backlash from the Far Right Church was pretty nasty. And Phil having moved to Florida made him an attainable target of death threats. The band had to submit an apology and yet the song is dead on subject.
For sure, heard this on the radio today had to Google it, love this song
@@fredpinczuk7352 Phil Collins?
@@LogoMan7777 I know this is a year old comment but I believe the song in general was supposed to be geared towards the PTL scandal that happened years before this song came out. The many churches took it to extreme fear that this would give a bad look on churches
100% goes with TF clues and marketing... like the billboard, the magazine, the phone number. Ahh that man is a genius!
New Ghost cover dropped today Easter 2023 led me to check this out.
This song is just as truthful and relevant today as it was the day it hit the airwaves

But we only want the superficial stuff- aesthetics of fashion and toys and music and what not from our childhoods. Leg warmers, the space shuttle.
This is amazing, Ghost made it stay alive!
I especially like the Bible passage on the sign the person holds up. Both because it's a nod to the bands name but also because the passage goes as follows "But it was the father who sent his envoy, the serpent, to temp his children and lead them astray"
Genesis 3:25 doesn't exist. I looked it up, Genesis 3 only goes to 24. Someone got me good...

Criticizing the televangelist, not you: That's the second stupidest thing I've heard called Satanic lately. The first as Barry Manilow.
Genesis 3:25 ... brilliant!
The older I get the more I appreciate Genesis
One of the most satirical music videos of all time, and when you think about it, seriously ahead of its time.
The Parody was spot on for that time.
Can't wait to hear Ghost's cover of this!
The righteous Gemstones should use this in the series.
Perfect video to expose these false prophets and TV evangelists.

With my ever loving wife beside me
But she don't know about my girlfriend
Or the man I met last night
Do you believe in God

I am a Christian also. It is total satire clearly on these late night TV Evangelists with names like Dr. Dollar or something stupid like that. Not going to waste my time on this planet googling it! It's a great song, I love it!
Creflo Dollar 💵 your right and its all a scam. Go to Jesus Himself and ask for forgiveness and the strength to live by the power of his holy spirit. God could care less about your money as it is only a means to an end. God can use your money to help others but u can't buy blessings nor can u force God's hand or blessing with money. Jesus is Real and He loves us deeply. We Really have No idea how deep his love is but we can't mistake that for weakness. He is also The Lion of the tribe of Judah and will judge everyone according to their deeds. It's very important we love God with all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength and love others as ourselves. God bless you!

I love the song! Phil is one of my heroes.
Someone who believes in most religions is definitely not believing himself or any of his own senses
It's literally just mocking televangelists
Phil is actually fascinated by these televangelists and what makes them tick (he mentioned it in a radio interview).
ChellasOfDorthion I agree. Still money money money.
If money is the root of all evil, any church would ask for none.
Bono had similar sentiments in the version of "Bullet the Blue Sky" on the "Rattle and Hum" album: "The god I believe in isn't short of cash, mister!"
Here because ghost released an amazing cover of this song today
Ha, love all the people who made it here from Ghost's cover.
I listened to this album so much as a child. Hearing the awesome cover and coming back to this is like seeing an old friend and his odd but interesting kid.
This and Land of Confusion are still relevant all these years later. sadly.
Even more this year. Post-election, the wolves that thought they knew who would win the election have gone rabid!
What do you mean sadly?

Genesis
At least "Marijuana" is not so damn illegal, now, somewhere.
Who’s the guy in the purple shirt?

I was backstage when I was working at Target Center, and Nick Collins was warming up to play drums for his dad. He said he only likes 2 of his dad's songs. This is one of them. Lmfao
I love this song's meaning. It shows how greedy people can be and how they will exploit their deepest desires for religion and spirtual fufilment.
You got that backwards, they are exploiting spiritual fulfillment and religion for their deepest desires
Here because of my healthy appreciation for Ghost and also for Phil Collins.
The cover is fucking brilliant and the OG here is a stellar song as well.
this song has the most moving and powerful emotionally and physically and amazing chorus ever. it is so genius. and that is it's background music and in the singing by phil which is so powerful and emotional and beautiful. also i love the bridge towards the end. it is stunning and very moving and beautiful also. i also love the cynical and funny lyrics. there were a lot of things like this back in the early '90s bc in the same year there was a dire straits song about this same topic which made fun of televangelists also and in 1992 there was a movie about this called leap of faith with steve martin. so all these things must have been made bc of the tammy baker and jim baker pta scandal that happened in the '80s.
the world should be a better place if everyone believed in god

This song just randomly popped up in my head after reading a Christian comment on fb.. So I'm here now, hallelujah!
One of Genesis' most legendary, iconic and contraversal tracks. As a Catholic, I don't have much hate on it, because it's truly a masterpiece, and like all Genesis tracks, theres a message too it, and this one states it clearly, which is not wrong. Honestly, an extremely underrated track, in an underrated album, and has to be one of my most favorite Genesis' tracks. Real iconic, and literally something you can't get outta your head for years, and thats something I can honestly say. They'll be never anything alike Genesis, or Phil's work. Legendary.
I don't think there's any controversy.
Agreed. This is one of my favorite sleeper songs and favorite songs all around. This video is hilarious and spot on! Every second is visually appealing and entertaining 😆 I love the scenes with him at the pool and the bikini babe manicuring his nails 🤣
I can only imagine how provocative this must have been when it was released back in the 90s. This is quintessential Midwest America if you ask me, well, at least where I'm from.
It turned some heads.
These "Christians" sure do look like our "first southern babtists"...
At 1:00 when Phil says "Oh yes he knows me" and that smile and that tilt of the head, that is authentic as anything. If he wasn't a Brit I'd swear he grew up Southern Baptist.
Great song!
When my dad introduced me to this song as a kid, I didnt know what an evangelist was so my interpretation was he was the devil in disguise trying to trick people. As an adult, I find that 10 yr old me was accidentally spot on lol.
