Walk with me and let's discover neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2022. I visit a lot of neighborhoods in this video, starting in Copacabana, and then go to Leme, Botafogo, Flamengo, Gloria, Lapa, Centro, Jardim Botanico and others! Let's visit Parque Lage, Christ the Redeemer, and also Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar). Read on for more info about these places!
    NEIGHBORHOODS VISITED:
    - COPACABANA:
Copacabana can be a little dangerous with a lot of homeless people, but nothing serious. Just people asking for food or money. We start with Copacabana Palace, and hang out at the beach.
    - LEME:
One of the nice upper middle class neighborhoods in Rio ery close to Copacabana, separated by the Hilton. Leme has a very relaxed vibe. It's near Sugarloaf Mountain - Pão de Açúcar.
    - BOTAFOGO:
Botafogo is one of the hip neighborhoods in Rio with a lot of restaurants, bars, etc. There's a lot going on, and if you like shopping you can visit Botafogo Praia Shopping. There are beautiful views of Pão de Açúcar at Botafogo Beach.
    - FLAMENGO:
Flamengo is another one of the well-developed and wealthy neighborhoods in Rio. They are most famous for their soccer club, just like Botafogo and nearby Fluminense. Flamengo beach is nice on a weekend when everyone goes out to enjoy it.
    - GLORIA:
One of the neighborhoods in Rio that could be avoided, Gloria is a bit poorer than the others. But this neighborhood is close to Lapa, the nightlife district, which makes it attractive in a way.
    - LAPA:
Watch for pee puddles during carnival, this place can get intense. Lapa is the nightlife area which starts at the Arco de Lapa, or Carioca Aqueduct. There are so many good bars, clubs and restaurants here. Although, you should be careful, as it's not in the safest area of the city.
    - CENTRO / CENTER:
There's a lot of history here. After Lapa, it's easy to walk into the Center, but this area can be full of people during working hours or completely dead on holidays and weekends. It's not the safest area, although there is a lot to do here, including a visit to Confeitaria Colombo, like in my video, as well as Museu do Amanhã (The Museum of Tomorrow).
    - PÃO DE AÇUCAR (SUGARLOAF MOUNTAIN):
Take an Uber or taxi to Bondinho do Pão de Açúcar (the cable car).
There are two stops on the cable car. The first point holds stunning views of the city, and here you can take a helicopter ride to Christ the Redeemer. The second stop is Pão de Açúcar which offers even better views of the city below.
    - CHRIST THE REDEEMER:
To hike there: Go to Parque Lage and follow the trail. Bring money with you, as of this video it will be 27 reals to enter. The security guard will let you into the trail after taking your information down.
The train: Take a ride to Trem do Corcovado and pay the fee for a round trip ticket. The tram takes about 20 minutes to get up to the top.
    BRAZILIAN FOOD SUGGESTIONS:
    Tapioca
    Pão de Queijo (cheese bread)
    Coxinha
    Guarana (soda)
    Bolinho de Feijoada
    Caipirinha (famous drink with cachaça)
    Brigadeiro (chocolate dessert)
    Feijoada (beans and meat)
    Galeto (chicken)
    Moqueca (fish stew)
    Rissole (fried snack)
    Pastel (fried snack)
    ZONES IN RIO:
The north is very dangerous and should be avoided. Parts of the west are dangerous, but there are some rich and safe areas. The center area is rich with history, but it's not as safe as the south. The south zone is the beach area and the main tourist zone.
Favelas should be avoided, as they are incredibly poor and unpredictably dangerous.
    THINGS TO DO AROUND RIO:
    Sugarloaf Mountain
    Christ the Redeemer
    Botanic Gardens
    Parque Lage

Spot on, John! Hey..new follower here from Brazil. As a brazillian guy I agree on everything you said. Love it! About bossa nova, you're right. Unfortunately most of the ppl don't listen to it anymore. Young ppl don't even know how it sound. But if you go to a bar where they play Jazz, you'll certainly listen to some great bossa nova tunes. Nice to meet you

Of course, Rio has a lot of social inequalities. The way the city is structured it is all mixed together: you actually see rich people living side by side with poor ones.
It shouldn't put anyone down, though, as the city is full of life, with very unique landscape and natural beauty. The people is often very friendly and happy. There's a vibe to it you can only grasp once you get there.

Randomly running into people (i met in Paraty) in the blocos. Seeing them drunk, stumbling around is the most entertaining thing about Brazil.

Hey thanks for the comment! I shot the video over a few days but the bulk was one day through the neighborhoods. I didn’t do the hike or Pão de Açúcar the same day, it would be too much!
