This isn’t to minimize the problem, there are real, serious problems, which is why we don’t need the conjecture of reporters to be able to grasp the actual issues. Intelligent people, I would hope, would respond to the depth of the issues, rather than the exciting sounds of gunfire, and relentless adjectives and pointing at areas where scary things happen.

I use to live in Rio. In one neighbourhood, we lived close to Vidigal, a favela. They sometime contact the residents living close the favela, to give warning about future shootings in or near the favela (and hence residents living in the line of fire just outside the favela), so that we could plan accordingly. They call this "A boca da favela" (the mouth of the favela) where drug sales are rampant. But favelas are also areas of residence for many cariocas. A society within a society, neglected by the state.

For those unfamiliar with Brazil and Rio. Brazil after the 1985 when the country began to be ruled by leftist parties and communism, on this time the slums houses exploded everywhere and spread like a disease. EVERYTHING got worse and it lasted until 2019 when our first really right-wing president took power. We had a very good gap time when the center party took power for 8 years and ended the inflation, but after that was a total disaster that started in 2002 and lasted until 2018 when President Lula was tried, convicted and arrested. Soon the left-wing party partner Dilma was impeached and was scattered from public life by the people's vote. Now with the right-wing government after a year in power all numbers reflect a huge improvement. The entire left party period which they used all the resources of the country to sponsor the communist party and other dictatorial governments destroyed the economy and the country for 13 years. Probably some leftist will comment some lie, but the story is written and there is no way to change. I was born and raised in Rio until I was 35 years old. I am a highly qualified professional and had to leave the country because there was no job with the left party in power, but now I'll be back if everything keeps getting better.
Social and economic exclusion are some of the main causes of all these. A country that does not give the underprivileged opportunities for survival ends up like this.
The Brazilian government should have got rid of the favelas long time ago. They must build new houses and smash down the favela. Brazil is a rich country and why are they allowing things to be this way.
well i'm brazilian, of course, it's not everywhere brazil is crime oriented, and also rio de janeiro and são paulo are better known by tourists, but this is a great place to live

Was in Rio about 2 weeks ago, and spent a few days in the favelas. Of course I met a local who lived there and brought me there. Indeed, I never seen so many guns in my life but was treated with respect by everyone . I felt safe in all time and even safer than being in Rio. At the end, they just want to survive the people in the favelas but I had an amazing time.
I wonder how much these 3 earn, why do they have more units to maximise global entropy than others? Ever thought about doing a documentary on central banks, overpopulation and obscene wealth extraction from the top 1% of the 1%?!
I had a chance to live in Rio and Durban (South Africa). Very similar places. Both rich in natural beauty, cultural and way more rich in danger. Long story short, stay out of these 2 places.
@Mike Fitzpatrick no doubt the gangs are the main culprits in the killings but Brazil is a violent place, too much disparity in income and education!!! Around 90% of favela dwelers are considered middle class by UN standards!!! Where is your wife from?
Complexo do Alemao is a big conglomerate!!! The great majority of people that lives in favelas are hard-working people!!! The state and Brazilians, in general, are responsible for their misfortune!
@Mike Fitzpatrick I would say both, police and gangs are a result of the social issues that afflict Brazil. Hard to fix when the main gang is the government!!!
Drug dealers and criminals hates Bolsonaro while the majority of honest population loves him. Ask to any drug dealer in South America if he prefers a Left wing government or a right wing government.

mich w in my experience traveling, which is a lot, I have found the same to be true. These dopey reporters can’t get past their immature reveling in how cool it is that they are there, with those people. I have images of Guadalcanal or the Tet offensive.

I'm from Rio. I love my city but we live in a war zone. We lose so many people daily that the news won't even report on that anymore. But what makes Rio violent is our stupid anti drug policy. If drugs were decriminalized police wouldn't have to go up the favelas to kill and be killed. WE MUST END THE WAR ON DRUGS!

Stop the lies, Brazil is very racist. Systematic racism is a huge problem in Brazil.
