From the movie "The Kids Are Alright." The producer said they went into the studio to get some b-roll of the band. And lo and behold, Pete just went and had them perform the whole song for the cameras.
I've been around long enough that I take this music for granted. It's great to see all these young UA-cam pups get into these songs the way I did when they came out.
You’re right, it is epic. And this was back in 1978, Pete Townshend was basically inventing all those synth sounds on the spot, in the studio. Back then ‘sounds’ didn’t exist until you figured out how to make them..., they weren’t in some computer database. Good reaction to a truly great song.
Pete Townshend wrote this due to how disgusted he was with himself pulling all night benders and passing out in gutters on the street. That is his description of this song.
It was written cause Pete left that bar and passed out in a random doorway in Soho (a part of London). A policeman recognized him ("A policeman knew my name") and being kind, woke him and told him, "You can go sleep at home tonight (instead of a jail cell), if you can get up and walk away." Pete's response: "Who the f--k are you?"
Also something to do about The Who splitting up from on of their earlier managers. And I think Townsend was in the underground, a cop recognized him and just told him to move along. Not arresting him.
He's talking about being falling down drunk, and having a woman who loves him so much she is still willing to kiss him after he's thrown up. He makes a similar reference in their song You Better You Bet
Still one of my favorite studio recordings, after many decades this stands head and shoulders above so many truly great bands and recordings, it's a work of art and has so much energy to this day
You really should see the official video of this song - it shows the four members of the band in the studio and gives you a great idea of the dynamic between them.
I once heard a story about how Kieth became Whos' drummer. Apparently he attended a band rehearsal, heard how their drummer was playin & said, "I can do better that that guy!" Sat down on the kit & the rest is history. IDK, that's what I heard!
Keith was a lead vocalist drummer. In an interview, with Keith, he said, he never played songs the same. He said he painted his kit....his drum sticks were his paint brushes.
Yep, this is a killer track. This song (and album) was a major comeback for the band in the late 1970's and it got major FM rock radio airplay at the time.
The musical ideas that came out of that guy’s head were ridiculous….and to maintain that level of creativity and innovation over many years is astounding. Pete Townshend is my music god and one of the very ELITE rock composers of all time.
The original Who ( vocalist Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle & drummer Keith Moon) were the best version of the band... The Who in the 60's was a r&b band which cranked out basic guitar/ bass/ drums rock... In the 70's, they incorporated modern technology that included keyboards, strings, loops, samples, etc... and became a monumental musical force. Tragically, this record in 1978 was the last before the death of drummer Keith Moon. The Who carried on as a trio w/ session players... recorded 2 more albums - 'Face dances' (1981) and "It's hard" (1982), but the band was declining in popularity... so they decided to part ways in the 80's. However, they kept reuniting in the 90's to tour or play shows from demand. The Who played a prolific set post 9/11 for the Concert for New York City in 2001... It was bassist John Entwistle's final concert. He passed away in 2002 just as The Who were about to tour again. With The Who just a duo (Daltrey & Townshend) w/ session players, they released 2 more studio albums - 'Endless wire' (2006) and 'Who' (2019)... and still tour today.
The irony of Keith Moon sitting in a chair that says "Not To Be Taken Away", and he was dead just a little while after this album came out. A true Rock and Roll tragedy. Great song, great album. Also, probably the first time an "F" bomb was deliberately broadcast, knowingly, or possibly unknowingly.
They were beaten to the F-bomb by Jefferson Airplane's song "We Can Be Together" which was broadcast despite the line "Up against the wall motherf-ers"
That particular F bomb somehow stayed in the song throughout my entire childhood of hearing the song on the radio late ‘70s through the ‘80s & early ‘90s. I always questioned it though because I couldn’t fathom it getting through. I remember being amazed when it first started getting beeped/silenced out - “Wow, they really did get away with that F bomb for two decades!!” Ridiculous, I say.
You should react to "5:15" by The Who. It's another banger of a song with deep lyrics. BTW, The Who is performing at the TD Garden in Boston on May 18 (two weeks from now).

I love the line about throwing punches around and preaching from my chair! 😹 Ahh......drunk daze! Seriously tho, another amazing Who song 🎵 Their orchestration is phenomenal! Thank you for sharing young man! 😽💋🎶
@BizMatik...it really makes me smile, while you are discovering this old classic music. It brings me back to the early 70's, when I heard it the first time. I really wish that guitars & drums were introduced to our younger generations, so that this music creation would be done again.... Your Grandparents probably listened to this. This was REAL music...not digitally enhanced.
In the Eagles documentary, Glenn Frye talks about going to England to record with famous producer, Glyn Johns early in their career. They try to convince Johns not to use a ton of echo and to produce them like they're a rock and roll band. Frye said he yelled back, "You're not a rock and roll band!!! The WHO are a rock and roll band!!!"
The who are magnificent! This was Keith Moons last album before he passed away (Rest in peace Keith) Pete Townsend wrote this song, wish I was around to have gone to one of their concerts ❤
I'm older than dirt and used to have their first Album in the 60's. Detroit Motown Records (near where I lived) had some of the best Bass Players ever, as it was my instrument of choice...then I watched the Who's Bass Player...the man was a mega star!
Hey Biz, I've got a couple new songs for you based on how awesome the ending is. Climatic! Evanescence, "whisper" ends in a crazy Latin chant, and The Moody Blues "nights in White satin" you have to load the right one because there are 2 versions. So I would say the longest version. It end with a Shakespeare poem followed by a loud Gong! Amazing it was a hit 3 different times around the world.
Agreed on the Moody Blues-- However, the writing credit belongs to Graeme Edge, their drummer. He wrote, "Late Lament" which is the name of the piece recited at the end of Nights in White Satin.
The drummer, Keith Moon, is Top 10 on every list. He's🔥🐐 Did you catch his drum fills? Sooooo clean! But friend, Keith's a wild man! During this video they had to duct tape his headphones to his head so they wouldn't fly off from how hard he plays and head bops. I love watching him!
When the lyric compares his mouth to a sewer hole (which would spit out the worst shit imaginable) he is amazed that his lover would still receive his kiss. In other words, she disregards all of the shit I talk and still loves me.
Just to add em; CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000-2015)=“Who Are You” CSI: Miami (2000-2012)=“Won’t Get Fooled Again” CSI: NY (2004-2013)=“Baba O’Riley” CSI: Cyber (2016-2016)=“I Can See For Miles” CSI: Vegas (2021)=“Who Are You”
This song is a real crowd pleaser when they do it live. Max audience participation. Sadly, Keith Moon passed shortly after this record was released. Kenny Jones from Faces/Small Faces came on as drummer and the band soldiered on. IMO, they should have retired after the Ox passed away because he was such a huge part of their sound too and the band isn't the same without Moon and Entwistle.
Great band to dive into, one of my all time favorite songs is "won't get fooled again", and John Entwistles bass is showcased so sick on the song "the real me".
That is another great song by him as well. He really was one of the best to play bass. Infact I believe in the U.K. he was voted bassist of the century.
Well actually Townshend wrote the lyrics and i think the "i spit out like a sewer hole" was just another way of saying you are puking your guts out, probably after a hard binge, who knows? Either way i am pretty sure he was referring to his wife or GF who he was receiving a kiss from maybe even right after this happened??
Yes, it is. All of the CSI shows had theme songs by The Who. They are; CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000-2015)=“Who Are You” CSI: Miami (2000-2012)=“Won’t Get Fooled Again” CSI: NY (2004-2013)=“Baba O’Riley” CSI: Cyber (2015-2016)=“I Can See For Miles” CSI: Vegas (2021-)=“Who Are You”

There's also a brilliant video of them recording this song. It's absolutely hilarious. What a band. Jesus Christ what a band they were.
From the movie "The Kids Are Alright." The producer said they went into the studio to get some b-roll of the band. And lo and behold, Pete just went and had them perform the whole song for the cameras.
I think they were the greatest. So musically Sophisticated and tight!! Completely original.
Love that video

I'm almost 70...my favorite British band.

Thanks
I've been around long enough that I take this music for granted. It's great to see all these young UA-cam pups get into these songs the way I did when they came out.
A rock masterpiece. The Who at their best are just about untouchable.

The drum fills in this song... There was no one like Keith Moon ever
All the players were the top...Moon was insane on the drums and life ... died way too young....

I just love the instrumentation of the 60-70's music, and the different sounds.
Kieth Moon’s drumming is the highlight of this song.

Had in on 8-track!
