Written after Pete was out for a night of drinking and passed out in a doorway in Soho while stumbling home. Woke up to a police officer poking him with his billy club, demanding to know who he was and telling him that if he got up and walked away, he wouldn't be arrested. Amazing to see him take that experience and create this epic masterpiece. You guys rock as always - much love from Canada!
According to the song the police man already knew his name.
Soho in London of course, not the pretend version in New York 👍
Bingo Dingo!
Townsend is a genius in every legitimate use of the word.
the "soho district" was were all the record companies operated from and townesend had been arguing with record company execs for 11 hours straight regarding band royalties. hence "eleven hours in the tin pan, god there's got to be a better way" tin pan refers to tin pan alley which was the hub of the music scene in London
This use to make me smile every time Roger sang "Who the f'ck are you." It seemed to be the only song on the pop / rock radio radio that wasn't being censored back in the day 😁
😁
Keith Moon was a freaking monster on the drums!❤
Saw them in Boston at the Music Hall front row balcony when the :Who's Next" LP came out Moon was great one the Song "I Can See for Miles" he blasted those drums.. i could spend 10 mins writing about that show. i heard crickets for 3 days it was so loud
@UglyDoug304 ; Oh god yes! Had to be seen to believe!
@@margaretflounders8510 They always said that Stevie Ray Vaughan didn’t play the guitar. He was the guitar. I could say the same for Keith Moon. Just incredible
An octopus!
@@Mr2012Ultra Perfect analogy!
"I spill out like a sewer hole, yet still receive your kiss." Now that's a hard asf line...
And Roger Daltrey's voice- imo -is the greatest rock n roll voice ever.
Masterpiece. I am not popular in some circles because I think The Who was better than The Beatles.
The Who had a take-no-prisoners, burning fury of rock music that isn't played this way anymore. Late 60's & Early 70's Rock & Roll that
still grabs ya by the throat and gets your attention. When The Who walked into a room, all the people they'd step back 'cause these were
some badass young men. Thanks for playing all The Who songs you have. It's greatly appreciated.
The best voice of all the British invasion bands. Daltry and his voice, almost kinda Celtic at times, which gave the band a great earthy sound.
Daltry's voice is overwhelmingly original and packs a powerful punch.
Helps to understand The Who's impact chronologically.
Late 1965 they join the British Invasion and (probably) invent punk rock with My Generation.
String of hits, leading to battling Hendrix for top spot at 1967 Monterrey Pop Festival.
1969: First rock opera Tommy changes everything, then they destroy at Woodstock.
1971: Studio album Who's Next mistaken for greatest hits, because each song is an epic banger.
1973: Mid-60s British equivalent of Crips vs Bloods (Mods vs Rockers) immortalized by groundbreaking double album Quadrophenia - feature film to follow.
1975: Squeeze Box becomes huge hit, turning a new generation onto The Who
1978: New and old fans blownvaway (again) by Who Are You
1981: Face Dances album swoops in to save us from Lionel Ritchie, Pointer Sisters
... next 40 years treats even more generations to mega concert tours, solidifying The Who as one of the few true pillars of popular music. Long Live Rock.
All the CSI’s used Who songs as their theme. There’s a spectacular in studio video of this song. You really get to see Keith Moon’s mischievousness. 😊
"I woke up in a SoHo doorway, policeman knew my name.. he said you can go sleep at home tonight if you can get up and walk away..."
Always Loved that line...!
Yeah me too. It's brilliant.
Story of my life...
how about I spit out like a sewer hole yet still receive your kiss
Keith Moon's drums wrap around this entire song.
NOT TO BE TAKEN AWAY
Absolutely, I think we’re the only ones that noticed in the chat - powerful.
Last album with Keith Moon--my heart broke the day he died. Knew it would never be the same. RIP dear Moon the Loon. Gone, but never forgotten.
It’s so eerie that Keith is sitting on a chair that says “not to be taken away”
you guys don't miss a beat ....literally ....you get all the nuances ..
.its great to see such appreciation.
The Who ...Just about the best Rock Band from the 1960s to come out of England ... they have everything .. Vocals, bass , drums and that's guys are unbearable in every dept. Raw, just bloody brilliant .
The drums always hit hard when Keith Moon was playing. Imagine having him and Bonzo to listen to on any given day? Another classic from The Who. Thanks La & Che. 🔥
The entire Who’s Next album is pure gold. I recommend doing the album from beginning to end. Every song is fire.
You told them the Who's Next album but they might end up thinking it's the album after the "Who Are You" album. You should tell them the name of the album is actually "Who's Next".
Totally agree!
Whos Next was the first tape I bought. Played it loud on my stereo book shelf speakers I took from the house and set on the back seat to my 66 Ford Falcon. Good times! hahaha
It doesn't even compare to Tommy , Quadrophenia, the who sell out and who's next.
💯🔥🔥🔥
The whole WHO'S NEXT album is AMAZING.
In the day, we had a radio station that used to have days dedicated to polling who was better, The Who or Led Zeppelin. Zeppelin always took the day, but The Who got a lot of love.
The critics hated Zeppelin and loved The Who, both were great, great bands
Daltrey was a notorious brawler. Bada$$ to the bone. Street cred.
Maybe my favorite Who song, I was 22 when this came out in 78. That was my favorite year in my life!
I really love Who and I think this song is probably my favorite.
This one is a fave. Hits hard and is so nuanced. The band was well respected in thier day, but don't get a ton of love today. Top 5 group, all time for me.
Check out what's written on the chair Keith is sitting on..."NOT TO BE TAKEN AWAY"...RIP
Watch the studio video of “Who Are You” to see for yourself the chemistry between Pete, Roger, John and Keith!
A masterpiece of music by one of the goats
This song was released in 1978. The Who had listened to a lot of punk bands talking shit for three or four years about existing big acts, dissing The Beatles, the Stones - and The Who. "Who the fuck are you?" was a direct answer to some of that.
The young drummer for the Who died before he got out of his 20's. He was Kieth Moon. Try and get their live recording of Magic Bus, it was special and UA-cam has it live in England. They were super talented and skilled as anybody.
The 'Who Are You' LP was released Aug 18th of 78. Couple weeks later I turned 18. Then about a week after that Keith Moon died Sept 7th of 78. For those who aren't aware the album cover became an instant classic. The chair Moon is sitting on has a the immortal stencil line "Not to be taken away". Personally this song inspired my wife to get clean while driving home from work many years ago. It holds a very special place in the soul of our family. Love your reaction gentlemen. ♥️
The Beatles brought us pop, The Rolling Stones brought us the blues, and The Who brought us the heat with in your face Rock.
Yeah. If you asked them. They would say "Maximum R&B"
We already had the blues, the stones brought us British blues.
And led Zeppelin deep purple Motorhead pink Floyd strangles
I grew up with this amazing stuff...beguiles the mind seeing first time hearing all over the place
On July 29th it has been 7 years since I lost my husband. This song brings me some great memories. Thank you this made my day.🎸🎶🎼👍✌️
Sorry for your loss.
Sorry for your loss, music will bring incredible never ending memories
Top 4 band all time for me....can't wait to hear you guys do: "Love Reign O'er Me."
They already did
@@user-vj8ul1cs7k Thanks I'll look for it.
"Eminence Front" ❤️ You've already done my other favorite "Bargain."
A great banger of a rock song from The Who is "Join Together". I don't think I've ever seen a reaction channel react to it. "Join Together" was recorded during the "Who's Next/Lifehouse" sessions but it didn't make it onto the original release of "Who's Next". It's an amazing song and thankfully it made it onto remastered releases of "Who's Next" in the 90's.
ICONIC CLASSIC....!!!
1:01 I think you would enjoy "a quick one while he's away" live at the Rock and roll circus. A great Who performance.
Nothing sweater than Watching people been Churched! Great reaction to a GREAT Band.✌🏻🏴
Who's Next is my fave Who album and this song is one of the reasons!
Man I'm jealous that you get to hear all these songs for the first time. Stoked for you guys.
This is a good one. I'd urge you guys to find the video for this song on UA-cam, as it was shot in the studio as the song was being recorded.
Note that when you see Keith Moon on the drums with his headphones duct taped to his head that this was standard. His movements were so sudden and abrupt that he had problems with losing them. It wasn't a joke, he did this a lot.
Great video that gives you a look into the band dynamic.
Good job as usual, guys.
Thanks for the reaction! I liked it! Watch the album cover and what is written on the chair Keith Moon is sitting on. It was the last album he was on. RIP Keith!
My favorite part is that soft acoustic guitar solo. Goosebumps!
The chair Keith is sitting in on the cover always gets me
This album was released August 21, 1978, Keith Moon died just a couple weeks later on September 7. Notice the back of his chair on the album cover "NOT TO BE TAKEN AWAY"
Cannot say how good it is to listen to this with ya'll. I am a Who fanatic from before and all I can say is: Welcome to the part of your lives where Keith Moon is your favorite drummer. Keep going with the Who. So much there to offer. Thanks again...your knowledge and chill factor are the perfect reaction combo. Cheers and much love
In my 51 yrs walking the earth I have only ever seen one man who played so hard, so vibrant and joyful he had to DUCT TAPE HIS FUCKING 🎧 to his head while recording. 😂
There is so much going on in that song in the performances are brilliant and yet it just feels so easy to roll right along with it.
You should play the entire Quadrophenia album start to finish, no fillers, a masterpiece probably only surpassed barely by Who’s Next. Anyway I suggest your next song to be “The Real Me” followed by “5:15”. Entwistle’s bass will blow you away.
Rodger Daltrey the Tom Jones of rock and roll. There's a great live video of this song. Incredible to watch Keith Moon in action.
Yeah I have this 45...in.. 1978 and took it to school and played it
Soooo many songs and sounds of theirs left to do. Pinball Wizard, I'm Free, and We're Not Gonna Take It from the Tommy album (a "rock opera" like Pink Floyd's The Wall), Magic Bus, Behind Blue Eyes, Join Together, and even more obscure tracks like Melancholia or Girl's Eyes (don't throw sticks at her! lol).
OMG you didn't watch the amazing film of them playing this in the studio! Please go back and watch it. You get to see the whole band playing and singing and also having fun playing around with each other - they are hilarious
Oh yeah❤❤❤❤❤
The Official Video is Hysterical with the Band & especially drummer Keith Moon
Wonderful Reaction as Always. Yes the Who belong in the upper stratosphere of Great Bands. Not a big Fan but they get my utmost Respect 🤘🏻
Hi bros. From my youth, before you were born. Still rocks for me at 76.😄
So cool to watch you guys appreciate what I heard has a senior in high school…radios were huge then and this album was loud and heard everywhere. The big deal being that the “F” bomb was said and that version couldn’t be on the radio!🤣
The WHO rocks! Such a great era to grow up with such amazing music - in all genres really!!!
Keith Moon passed away after one of his famous benders shortly after this was released. Notice the sign on the chair Moon is sitting on, "Not to Be Taken Away".
I love you guys. You don't say much and your videos are short and sweet, but what you say is smart and I always learn more about the music from listening to you.
so cool seeing young cats like you appreciating great older music
The who appealed to so many genres and generations of teenagers with their rebellious songs
"Slip Kid" is another with no shortage of Who 'tude, and it's mostly overlooked.
favorite song ,hands down, the perfect rock song, wore out many a copie of this album, try sister disco
On the cover Keith Moon (Drummer)
Is sitting backwards on a chair that says "Not to be taken away "
Ironically and sadly he died shortly after
love you guys. for me, it goes Zeppelin, the Who, Pink Floyd, and Sabbath. these are the great, must listen rock bands of the 70s from England. they are the tops, must listen. they are the standard setters.
The picture of Keith Moon sitting on a chair that says "Not To Be Taken Away" still makes me sad. Too ironic.
Entwistle & Moon awesome rhythm section.
The genius of Pete Townsend. And Moon the Loon.... Wearing out those skins
A lot of great songs by this…. Thx
It took a long time for the radio censors to catch the f word! As a teen I would snicker every time I heard it! Especially on the bus to school.
The chair Keith Moon is sitting in behind you says "Not to be taken away", Ironically, and sadly he was taken away shortly thereafter!
One of the best live bands that ever blew some eardrums up! Saw them four times, saw Lynyrd Skynyrd open for them in ST. Louis, 1975; the crowd booed LZ off the stage, they only wanted the who!
This was the first song to sneak the word FUCK on the radio!
Love you loving the 'orribe Who.
Many say the best drummer in the world at that time
Oh yes, The Who at their finest…
Was just listening to this song in the car just 1/2 hr ago coming home, and I thought how you guys would like this song, and when you might listen to it. I get home, turn on UA-cam, and there you guys are with WHO ARE YOU! Too cool.
Hypnotized By Fleetwood Mac
🎶 ❤I Love you 2...I'm serious you'll be Mesmerized by the Lyrics an the Vibe. That's my #1 request. It'll take you on a Deep thinking...hypnotic Ride 🎶
Just beautiful!
The chair that Keith is sitting in says "not to be taken away", and of course he taken from this world shortly after. The song on this album titled "The Music Must Change" has no drums on it because Keith couldn't figure out how to play it. He wasn't a technical or precise drummer like Ian Paice, but he was a force of nature like no other. Taken far too soon, but isn't that the case with almost all the truly revolutionary greats of rock and roll.
Brothers I love you' re show. Keep up the great work! I graduated in 1977 and all you play just speaks to me! God Bless you.
All the CSI shows have a song by The Who as their opening theme.
The Who were my fav live band - I saw them many times, including 3 times with Kieth Moon!
It’s amazing to think that these are 60’s/early 70’s songs, written by very young men. The Who, the Kinks and the Beatles all were happening at the same time.
Peace
Quadrphenia whole album so much energy from that one
I heard them open many concerts with this song
You guys react to great songs. Your Stones and Led Zep choices are great! Would LOVE to see your reaction to the Quadrophenia album. "The Real Me" is a solid banger to start the album off with. Cheers!
Roger Daltry the greatest rock screamer, great vocalist
Believe it or not, this song played heavy on FM radio and I never once heard an edit or bleep when he clearly says who the F are you. I guess it was just too good to mess with 😊
You were definitely not listening to the same FM stations I was. It was always cut.
@jpmnewyork apparently not. I grew up in Springfield MA and listened to wccc, whcn and waaf through the 70's and 80's. Never heard an edit.
@@davidfinnell1660 I worked at WHCN for one weekend in 1977. That was the extent of my professional radio career.
So glad you guys chose the full album version. Most of the time when you hear this song nowadays it's cut to pieces and without the important final verse.
🙏❤🌹 Keith & John 🌹❤🙏
They were so perfectly balanced. One thing to note, Pete Townshend is a genius. Good portion of his music has *meaning*. They have a very important place among the very top bands, including making Rock Music Get Loud!
Who the fuck are you?!…love this song, it’s attitude…written out of the pages of my life….take no shit…saw this band 3x, all excellent! Thanks, gents!
The WHO was the baddest and coolest rock band of all time! Now try listening to This Song Is Over. It is incredible!
I always thought it was ironic what's written on the chair that Keith Moon is sitting on. This was his last album with The Who before he died...
Old man trivia: back in the 80s on the radio they didn't censor that F-bomb,which suprised me at the time.
Sunday gone, I was in Brighton, The Who, unreal .
The video of the studio recording is a must. Keith Moon at his mad best! Do watch. Not long before he passed away.
Lots of WHO for you to cover from "invasion" in 1964 through the 1980s rivaling the Rolling Stones and Beatles for the kings of "traditional" (non-metal) rock. Kept carrying the load as disco took over representing classic rock- they are known for their crazy dynamic shifts...RIP Drummer Keith Moon- known for fills between fills between other fills
Now absolutely everybody will know where this ame from😂 Beginning of CSI!!
Eminence Front should be next
LMAO! GOTTA LUVVVVV THOSE WHO SOUNDS GUYS! 💯😊 YEAH ALL THOSE CRIME DRAMA SERIES SHOWS : BABA O'REILY, WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN AND OF COURSE THIS BANGERRR!
