Thank you for this great video! Your camera angles and explanations are incredible. Thank you for taking the time to do this. With the help of your video I was able to do this repair. The part I struggled with the most was getting the coupling to slide down on the shaft of the new rack and pinion.
Great! Glad I could help.
Good video.... I'm fellow mechanic that always just watch repair videos for fun
Very well explained...
Thank you madick.
every damn uplander/montana is leaking at the same spot. gonna attempt this today thanks for the video !!!
Great video helped a lot thanks!
gonna help me with my Saturn Relay, thanks!
Great! Glad I could help.
Great video, i was able to change mine out in a day.
That's great Richard! Thank you.
I wish i had a pit or a lift though. LOL
Yes. It’s definitely easier on the body that way. It seems to take longer and longer to get out from under a car as I age. Lol.
Is it okay to use ATF fluid in place of the GM power steering fluid - I usually prefer the non rip off pricing if it is a valid option.
I'm having trouble figuring out how to remove the steering wheel on an 08 Uplander. The main problem is finding the release system on the airbag unit which is diffenent than the Chevy Venture as shown on youtube. Would you know how to do it?
I have to say, I subscribed because I find all your videos to be very interesting and helpful. My only question is: how long can I wait after replacing everything before getting an alignment?
Great! You should get it done ASAP Mr. Adam
Thank you. I should have listened but instead I tried to wait and its really screwed me over.
@@adamhearn7266 How did it screw you over? What happened?
@@intosilence1773 well it cost me a set of tires because I was lazy and just kept using with bad alignment and it wore the tires down pretty quick.
Nice job out of curiosity how much would a repair like that cost someone?
I know at a dealer it is about 1500, Firestone is about 800
question how long did that take you i have the buick version of that van
I got an apparent issue with the steering columns connection to the rack, it works, but sometimes the wheels do nothing when turning the steering wheel, no clue what it looks like, going to try get a look at it later today, just doing research while i can. No pump whine or leaks, fluid looks ok but maybe a bit dirty.
Woa! Sounds scary. Obviously don’t try and drive it like that. The pinch bolt may be loose from steering shaft to the rack. Or there is a problem in the steering rack itself. Good luck.
Hi - great video just removed and installed in rack! However, having an issue the joining the coupler to the rack - just doesn't want to to seat all the way only travels about 1/4 of the way.
Great! You need to get it lined up and then wiggle it down. You will know it’s far enough down because you can get the bolt through. If it’s not all the way down the bolt shouldn’t go through. If I remember correctly.
@@zerbinauto Thanks - figured it out - I still had the subframe lowered! 0nce I jacked that back up -it slid right in! Thankss
One more question - My tie rods ends are not close to lining up - the right side is out too far and the left side is too short. I tied my steering in the straight position, haven't moved the front wheels, measured my steering rack to the same length as the old one (installed new tie rod ends) I did have to rotate the steering rack gear slightly to line up with the coupler. Should I move the wheels to make it fit or should I not worry as it is going to the alignment shop next? Or is this something requiring disassembly? Thanks a bunch!
@@martincd321 I usually need to move the steering Knuckle slightly to get the tie rod ends in. Try that first then see how far out it is. Also did you count how many turns it toke to remove the tie rod and then screwed it back on the same? If it’s close then the Alignment shop can take car of the rest. Hopefully they steering shaft is not spun out of rotation. Better not to spin it unless necessary. If you are careful you can find the centre of the steering shaft again. You rotate it all the way to the right till it give some resistance. And then you count how many to go back the other way and you do that to find where the centre is. But if you rotate too hard you can easily break the clock spring for the airbag. Good luck!
@@zerbinauto thanks, I did count the threads on the tie rod ends but they are a different make on the the tie rods and different length from the originals. I measured the overall length. Just thinking now maybe I need to drop the new rack out and do like you said to center the rack .. Then reinstall.. Thanks for your help!
How do you get the steering knuckle to slide back on that easily. I’ve spent a whole day and can’t get it to slide on, it goes halfway then starts to angle and can’t slide down any further.
It needs to slide down enough to get the bolt through the slot. Maybe you need a helper to rotate the steering wheel slightly. It needs to go in straight.
I had my dad turn the steering wheel and no luck. It might be a temperature difference; cold knuckle, warm pinion. Any suggestions on how to move the boot back better, to expose the knuckle more? The boot is stiff.
Wow if only mine was this rust free. Everything has been a fight, currently trying to get the lines hooked onto the rack and they won't line up! Wish me luck, that and the intermediate shaft left and it's done 😭
Good luck! It’s all about trying to figure out what straight is when threading in a fitting. Some times you need to pull one way or the other to get the threads started.
@14:35 that line is from “Rainman Ray’s” channel. he does this click noise all the time
What wrench company was that when can we see a tool video???
Old ends on a new rack? That's a no no for me. Rule of thumb never put old parts on "new" ones
