My buddy did a few hill climbs with his 2016 TW and it surprised each of us how well the bike did!! Thanks for the recommendation! We'll definitely be going again!!
They haven't really changed much at all and that is one reason I love them! Those old Yota trucks are pretty beasty, mine though would have to the be the old 70's and 80's box style Chevys! I had a 73 and a 77 and wish that I still had them!
I grew up riding a 1986 Yamaha BW200 and loved it. The TW200 has always intrigued me as it’s basically a street-legal version of my old ‘86 BW. Today, I just finished taking my MSF Course and rode a Suzuki VanVan 200, which is basically a fuel injected version of the TW, and it has solidified my choice to get a T-dub as I’m 5’7” and 160 lbs. The other dual sports are just too tall. Low seat height, reliable, can reach 55 mph stock, and does great off-road. Thanks for these videos!

In 87 got one for my 1st wife, two weeks later she asked if she can ride HER bike. In 2019 I have retired to the mountains, got a new tw and smile every day, over 2000 miles only had to maintain the chain, light, nimble and hauls my 200 lbs butt up and down gravel and mud trails. Sure I would like a kicker, but I do know how to jump start. Possibly a little more power, hard to remember 30+ years back. I would highly recommend this little machine to everyone if it's your first ride or like me much further down the road. Good luck with yours. Oh and one more thing, when you wonder if the tw can and then it does you will know the smile I am talking about. Have fun
Hello. Honest video. I have an original TW 1988. A little over 4K miles. The gas tank died and I replaced it with a Clark plastic tank of bigger capacity which I strongly recommend. The kickstart has been a savior in countless times. I still cannot pinpoint exactly what I like the most of it. Its my favorite toy. Keep riding!!!!!!

I think I'm gonna check this bike out, I was considering the crf250r, but I've heard quite a few people say they had issues with them. This would be perfect out here in Mississippi.
At first I was looking at the Honda CRF250L but really liked the simplicity of this bike and the lower seat height. Plus, there are plenty of upgrades for this one! I'd recommend it!
I had an 89' model. Unfortunately I sold it a few years ago. I miss it terribly. He was a mechanic at a motorhome place. So it went to good hands. He really fixed it up nice. I'm wanting to get another one.
I don't think I could sell mine! I made a mistake of selling another bike years ago and I've regretted it ever since. I don't wanna make the same mistake again! I'd say, if you want another one, find a way to make it happen and bring that joy back!
Are you the original owner? My father in law once bought a 2006 that only had 200 miles on it. This was back in like 2013, so not as many years! I know what you mean though, a lot of my miles are simply riding around the house, just because it doesn't have a ton of miles, doesn't mean it has a ton of hours!

@@MOBStreet83 Got it with all the standard upgrades too - large footpegs, handguard brackets, thick skidplate, Clarke large tank, Renthals, several oil filters, left side cover gaskets, air filters, tire tubes and more. I don' know the guy I bought it from so didn't ask him why he was selling it. I just rode away quick. The bike was mint with 2800 miles and no dirt even tossed in by the front sprocket. Got all the stock parts too so my backpack was full of goodies. Thanks for your encouragement. It's a keeper.

Why change something that sells well and works? By the way I don't have a TW-200, but I do like the smaller light weight bikes. They're easy to handle and are a lot of fun.

Mine is a '92 and my wife's is an '09. Other than the kickstart and front brake, my '92 has a different carb and throttle cable setup. I believe all the current bikes (at least the '09) have a plugged orifice for adding a kickstart.
Thanks for the comment and the input. I know the 2019 still has the spot for the kick start. Plus, the Japanese models had a kick start until the 2009 model I believe. There have been TW owners that have ordered the kick start kit for the Japanese models so they could install them on there bikes here in the States.
@@MOBStreet83 I get it. I feel the same. A kick start is fullproof, more so than relying an a battery and starter motor. A kick start fits better with the reason people buy this bike. They don't buy it for comfort and convenience. They buy it for it's reliability, versatility, and go anywhere ability.
no need for 91 octane. read up and understand octane before assuming you just magically need it on a simple carb small engine. run 100% gas, no ethanol. great videos
Adam, thanks for the comment, I appreciate it! Now that I have had the bike for a while I have tested both and found that the bike runs better on the lower octane. I agree, I should have looked at this before. Coming from riding my Harley Davidson that won't run on any octane lower than 91, I just assumed that the TW would benefit from it as well. Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it! There are a few tires you can get for the TW, but the ones I was talking about are the Bridgestone TW203 for the front and the TW204 for the rear. They have a flatter tread pattern which is more road friendly that the stock tires. Hope this helps!
Just beware that with such a small fuel tank on the TW 200 and using a multigrade gasoline pump you're buying atleast 1/3 of a gallon of whatever octane rating was last purchased that's trapped in the hose. Usually 87 grade.
@DavidParry thanks for the input. That is a very crucial point to make! I'm lucky because the only gas station in town has individual pumps per each octane grade.
That is a good and relevant point, but I think it would be a negligible as far as performance. Assuming you have a 1.8 gallon tank, the hose dispenses both 87 and 91 octane and If you filled up from empty, the lowest octane rating you would get is about 90.33. Also, even though it is posted at 87 or 91, the actual rating may vary slightly. + or - .5 octane would likely pass a state fuel quality screening. I think a larger concern would be if you were concerned about ethanol.
@@kohlmjj, problem is when you fill half a tank. I knew of a kid who put a 13:1 piston in his Grom. He had a container of 94 octane in his garage for first fill up and the bike ran amazing! Second tank at a gas station, which was just a half fill, he blew a lovely big hole through the piston with his mix of 87 and what was left of the 94. He thought the pump was 94. Found out the hard way.
David Parry there may be larger factors involved. I think if someone is running 13:1 on the street, you should be very mindful of what you put in the tank. With a Grom’s 1.5 gallon tank, a 50/50 mix of 94/87 would yield 90.5 octane. If there was a half tank of 94 in it, and they went to the dispenser, purchased 94 and got a third gallon if 87, then the yield would be just over 92 octane. It could easily be a scenario of the timing is advanced, the weather is hot, it’s jetted lean (carbureted), ridden excessively hard, or a combo of all 4. Fuel could definitely be a factor, but albeit one of the smaller ones.

Do you remember that toy that was like ball made of a bunch suction cups? that is what riding a tw200 is like it has more traction than anything you have ever been on.
I actually have one of the first ones and my carburetor is junk and I was looking into it and they did change the carburetor cuz they have problems with the first ones
If the bikes are still identical, couldn't you have a Yamaha dealer retrofit a kick starter by just ordering the parts and having their mechanic put them on? (Maybe Layton cycle?)

There is the High/Low Beam switch. But it wouldn't be that hard to wire some sort of switch in there if you wanted to keep the stock headlight. A lot of guys have switched to them out to an LED option but it costs about $120. It draws half the juice of the stock!
Nope! In all honesty I felt it ran better on the lower grade. I ran it.at first because that is what my Harley requires, but the Tdub got better mileage and ran better on the lower grade!

Pretty sure the manufacturers don't have to bring old bikes up to emissions standards... just newly redesigned ones. Think that's how we got stuck with the KLR 650 for so long.

@@MOBStreet83, was the KLR 650 sold in CA? I'm not sure any large single-cylinder, carb'd bike could ever meet current CA emissions standards. I read an article that said the reason Kawi was leaving the KLR 650 as-is was the redesign would require a new emissions certification... and even a modern KLR 650 would struggle with that engine configuration.
I am pretty sure the KLR was sold over there. But while I was working for Rocky Mountain ATV/MC I was helping do research on all the CARB specs that were coming out and what that meant for the new and current bikes. We had to stop selling anything that would alter the exhaust, intake or fuel mixture to customers in California because of the CARB specs. It was and is a nightmare!
Gotta have clean air! My first PWC was a 2-stroke and I remember reading something about 2-strokes in a magazine just as the industry was converting to 4-strokes. It said that a typical 2-stroke PWC would pollute as much burning a TANK of gas as a new car driving 100,000 miles on the road. Now I'm not sure what sort of pollution they were referring to specifically, but that did make me feel a little guilty about my 1100 Zxi. My 2nd PWC had a CARB sticker on its hull and I could tell the difference.

I think if it has been well maintained I'd jump on it! Obviously look it over and ride it and make sure everything feels tight on it and no major dents or leaks or anything like that, that'llshow it's been abused. But for $1,800 I would probably take it!

I don't understand the issue with a lack of kick starter. The bike weighs less than 300 lbs. Just push it up a small hill, hop on, put it in 3rd gear, pull in the clutch then let it out when it starts rolling and you're off.

I was looking at the Honda CT-125 until I found out about the t-Dub. It seems that you have to add to the Hondas what you get on the t-Dub. Check out other videos.
You know, the CT-125 is pretty sweet and hats off to Honda for paying homage to the ol' trail 90 and 110!! That bike would be a blast to have in the stable, but the TW200 is just much more my style! I love the Tdub and I will from now on always do my best to make sure I have one!
What do you mean by having to add to the Hondas what you get on the t-Dub? My brother and my dad both own older Honda dual sports (a NX dominator and a African Twin) and they goth have all the equipment, which means they came with the standard equipment when they were new
@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess Depending on how you want to ride some people change the sprockets and tires. There is even a bore out cylinder kit for the honda for more power. 200 cc yammie already has it.
I'm 6'1" and it's a little small. Adding larger pegs help you shift your feet around a bit and at that size you DEFINITELY want risers for the bars. The upside to this being small for your size: if you'e going to fireroad/trail ride you have a LOT of standover, which I've found to be a nice thing that goes well with the limited suspension travel - rather than being perched way up on a moto when crawling over slow/technical stuff and feeling the need to pin it to stay upright, you can use your landing gear to stabilize the 300# this bike weighs.
That's what a lot of people have said! But, you can piece them together from an older bike and install them on the new bikes. But I agree, having that kickstart on there sure would be a nice backup.
I have front and rear drums. Never had any troubles with them. So I would say if it isn't broken, why fix it. The drum brakes last for a very long time too. I would miss the kick starter though. You can push start it though in a bind.
@@court2379 I like the drums because there's a lot less to go wrong, but changing brake pads vs shoes is much less hassle. I can do the front pads in 2 minutes but I have to get my stand and take the wheel off for the shoes. Plus i think disk brakes look a lot cooler.

MOBStreet 83 still a great little bike that could! I did part of the 1,000 miles of the Oregon dirt (OBDR) but I rode a Yamaha WR250R, I prefer a Tdub though, it’s way better to push a small bike to its limits, easier ride... 🍻
Personally, I've seen my Father in Law have 10,500+ on his 2006. He bought it with 200 miles on it. I'm sure there are some with loads more than that. My 2019 now has 1400 on it.
@@MOBStreet83 Higher octane just means it resists detonation more, from adding things that don't burn as well. All the fuel grades are the same(within a brand), the higher octane just has some more ethanol (or something even cheaper) in it.
Really, do you mind me asking why you didn't like it? Now that I have had mine, I can't really ever seeing me get rid of it. Plus, I have added the Cycle Racks Rear Rack on it now and my kids love riding the bike with me!
The tires do pretty well and they corner pretty well so far. I know they aren't the full street tires that come on street bikes, but for only going 50mph and less they do the trick. These two bikes are the exact same height. The reason the 2003 looks taller is because it was closer to the camera. I appreciate the comment!

I have been riding my Harley for more than 10 years and it runs loads better on the higher octane so more by habit than anything else I put that in the TW as well. @@MOBStreet83 It's not a every day way to start it but when you need to be somewhere and there is no other way you have to improvise . Note: if you forget to turn on the ignition and remember during the ride down the hill don't turn on the ignition it will blow the muffler clean off the bike.
@@MOBStreet83 No, definitelynot that, lot of bikes got carbs, think it has to do both older technology and emissions (an excuse). I personally think it is because these go on indefinitely and are go anywhere tools, EU does not want their citizens to be free thinking free rolling crowd.

The shinko 60/street 40/dirt are awesome. I have them and they're a lot smoother if you're mainly on the road. Way less vibration from them.

If the battery dies you can always push start it. Just coast it down hill or run with it in neutral then jump on and pop the clutch in gear.

Adam, thanks for the comment, I appreciate it! Now that I have had the bike for a while I have tested both and found that the bike runs better on the lower octane. I agree, I should have looked at this before. Coming from riding my Harley Davidson that won't run on any octane lower than 91, I just assumed that the TW would benefit from it as well. One thing I see on Fuelly is that the user reported fuel economy has improved between the earlier models to the newer ones.
I just fueled mine up today and I calculated my mileage at 72.5 mpg. That isn't bad at all. This was on my 2021 TW

Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it! There are a few tires you can get for the TW, but the ones I was talking about are the Bridgestone TW203 for the front and the TW204 for the rear. They have a flatter tread pattern which is more road friendly that the stock tires. Hope this helps!
Just beware that with such a small fuel tank on the TW 200 and using a multigrade gasoline pump you're buying atleast 1/3 of a gallon of whatever octane rating was last purchased that's trapped in the hose. Usually 87 grade.
@DavidParry thanks for the input. That is a very crucial point to make! I'm lucky because the only gas station in town has individual pumps per each octane grade.
That is a good and relevant point, but I think it would be a negligible as far as performance. Assuming you have a 1.8 gallon tank, the hose dispenses both 87 and 91 octane and If you filled up from empty, the lowest octane rating you would get is about 90.33. Also, even though it is posted at 87 or 91, the actual rating may vary slightly. + or - .5 octane would likely pass a state fuel quality screening.
I think a larger concern would be if you were concerned about ethanol.
@@kohlmjj, problem is when you fill half a tank. I knew of a kid who put a 13:1 piston in his Grom. He had a container of 94 octane in his garage for first fill up and the bike ran amazing! Second tank at a gas station, which was just a half fill, he blew a lovely big hole through the piston with his mix of 87 and what was left of the 94. He thought the pump was 94. Found out the hard way.
David Parry there may be larger factors involved. I think if someone is running 13:1 on the street, you should be very mindful of what you put in the tank.
With a Grom’s 1.5 gallon tank, a 50/50 mix of 94/87 would yield 90.5 octane.
If there was a half tank of 94 in it, and they went to the dispenser, purchased 94 and got a third gallon if 87, then the yield would be just over 92 octane. It could easily be a scenario of the timing is advanced, the weather is hot, it’s jetted lean (carbureted), ridden excessively hard, or a combo of all 4. Fuel could definitely be a factor, but albeit one of the smaller ones.

I've really enjoyed it and have really only had it slide on me in clay-like mud, but still enjoy how well it rides!
I actually have one of the first ones and my carburetor is junk and I was looking into it and they did change the carburetor cuz they have problems with the first ones

If the bikes are still identical, couldn't you have a Yamaha dealer retrofit a kick starter by just ordering the parts and having their mechanic put them on? (Maybe Layton cycle?)
They make a kickstarter kit for them. The casting still has the location for it.

is there a switch to turn off the headlight ? the headlight steals too much electricity from the battery
There is the High/Low Beam switch. But it wouldn't be that hard to wire some sort of switch in there if you wanted to keep the stock headlight. A lot of guys have switched to them out to an LED option but it costs about $120. It draws half the juice of the stock!
+1 Replacing for LED - more light/less power. Not as cheap as a switch but rally worth it.

Nope! In all honesty I felt it ran better on the lower grade. I ran it.at first because that is what my Harley requires, but the Tdub got better mileage and ran better on the lower grade!

Pretty sure the manufacturers don't have to bring old bikes up to emissions standards... just newly redesigned ones. Think that's how we got stuck with the KLR 650 for so long.

@@MOBStreet83, was the KLR 650 sold in CA? I'm not sure any large single-cylinder, carb'd bike could ever meet current CA emissions standards. I read an article that said the reason Kawi was leaving the KLR 650 as-is was the redesign would require a new emissions certification... and even a modern KLR 650 would struggle with that engine configuration.
I am pretty sure the KLR was sold over there. But while I was working for Rocky Mountain ATV/MC I was helping do research on all the CARB specs that were coming out and what that meant for the new and current bikes. We had to stop selling anything that would alter the exhaust, intake or fuel mixture to customers in California because of the CARB specs. It was and is a nightmare!
Gotta have clean air! My first PWC was a 2-stroke and I remember reading something about 2-strokes in a magazine just as the industry was converting to 4-strokes. It said that a typical 2-stroke PWC would pollute as much burning a TANK of gas as a new car driving 100,000 miles on the road. Now I'm not sure what sort of pollution they were referring to specifically, but that did make me feel a little guilty about my 1100 Zxi. My 2nd PWC had a CARB sticker on its hull and I could tell the difference.
I have been looking at the TW200 for my next bike. My worry is if I buy one Yamaha will put out a TW300. That would suck.

I think if it has been well maintained I'd jump on it! Obviously look it over and ride it and make sure everything feels tight on it and no major dents or leaks or anything like that, that'llshow it's been abused. But for $1,800 I would probably take it!

I don't understand the issue with a lack of kick starter. The bike weighs less than 300 lbs. Just push it up a small hill, hop on, put it in 3rd gear, pull in the clutch then let it out when it starts rolling and you're off.

I was looking at the Honda CT-125 until I found out about the t-Dub. It seems that you have to add to the Hondas what you get on the t-Dub. Check out other videos.
You know, the CT-125 is pretty sweet and hats off to Honda for paying homage to the ol' trail 90 and 110!! That bike would be a blast to have in the stable, but the TW200 is just much more my style! I love the Tdub and I will from now on always do my best to make sure I have one!
What do you mean by having to add to the Hondas what you get on the t-Dub? My brother and my dad both own older Honda dual sports (a NX dominator and a African Twin) and they goth have all the equipment, which means they came with the standard equipment when they were new
@@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess Depending on how you want to ride some people change the sprockets and tires. There is even a bore out cylinder kit for the honda for more power. 200 cc yammie already has it.

I'm 6'1" and it's a little small. Adding larger pegs help you shift your feet around a bit and at that size you DEFINITELY want risers for the bars. The upside to this being small for your size: if you'e going to fireroad/trail ride you have a LOT of standover, which I've found to be a nice thing that goes well with the limited suspension travel - rather than being perched way up on a moto when crawling over slow/technical stuff and feeling the need to pin it to stay upright, you can use your landing gear to stabilize the 300# this bike weighs.
If the new one came with the kickstart and had a rear disc brake I'd buy another one right now.
That's what a lot of people have said! But, you can piece them together from an older bike and install them on the new bikes. But I agree, having that kickstart on there sure would be a nice backup.
I have front and rear drums. Never had any troubles with them. So I would say if it isn't broken, why fix it. The drum brakes last for a very long time too.
I would miss the kick starter though. You can push start it though in a bind.
@@court2379 I like the drums because there's a lot less to go wrong, but changing brake pads vs shoes is much less hassle. I can do the front pads in 2 minutes but I have to get my stand and take the wheel off for the shoes. Plus i think disk brakes look a lot cooler.
They are so cool, a real adventure bike! Sadly we cant have them here in Denmark since they only have carbs

MOBStreet 83 still a great little bike that could! I did part of the 1,000 miles of the Oregon dirt (OBDR) but I rode a Yamaha WR250R, I prefer a Tdub though, it’s way better to push a small bike to its limits, easier ride... 🍻

what's the most miles you know of on one of these?
Personally, I've seen my Father in Law have 10,500+ on his 2006. He bought it with 200 miles on it. I'm sure there are some with loads more than that. My 2019 now has 1400 on it.
One guy on youtube is reporting over 25,000 miles.

Yamaha says that the top speed on this little thing is 73mph. You can get taller gears on it, but then you'll lose your lower end hill climbing grunt.
Why would you use high octane fuel in a motor that doesnt benefit from it?
You know, we did a test on it and it doesn't run any better or get better mileage on the higher octane. So I just run the regular now.
@@MOBStreet83 Higher octane just means it resists detonation more, from adding things that don't burn as well.
All the fuel grades are the same(within a brand), the higher octane just has some more ethanol (or something even cheaper) in it.

Really, do you mind me asking why you didn't like it? Now that I have had mine, I can't really ever seeing me get rid of it. Plus, I have added the Cycle Racks Rear Rack on it now and my kids love riding the bike with me!
Those tires are not made for the street. That 2003 had a higher seat from the picture, and I like that better.
The tires do pretty well and they corner pretty well so far. I know they aren't the full street tires that come on street bikes, but for only going 50mph and less they do the trick. These two bikes are the exact same height. The reason the 2003 looks taller is because it was closer to the camera. I appreciate the comment!
Great bike, but why are you throwing money away? It only requires Regular 86 Octane Unleaded. You gain absolutely nothing with 91.

I have been riding my Harley for more than 10 years and it runs loads better on the higher octane so more by habit than anything else I put that in the TW as well. Found out that I get better mileage on the lower octane with the TW. Thanks for letting me know though, I appreciate it!

It's not a every day way to start it but when you need to be somewhere and there is no other way you have to improvise . Note: if you forget to turn on the ignition and remember during the ride down the hill don't turn on the ignition it will blow the muffler clean off the bike.

The pre 2001 models all had a kickstart. They are still out there. If one shows up in Utah in the classifieds it usually sells pretty quick.

@@MOBStreet83 No, definitelynot that, lot of bikes got carbs, think it has to do both older technology and emissions (an excuse). I personally think it is because these go on indefinitely and are go anywhere tools, EU does not want their citizens to be free thinking free rolling crowd.
