Once he's out and calms down, he's wonderful - gentle, curious and very sweet, but getting him out without a tag can be tricky. That's OK, I still love him!
Hi clint my daughter had 3 suggestions for a name. 1) Ajambo- means "born at night". 2) Purah. And lastly 3) liquorice. Lovely video, these snakes are quite underrated by people so its nice to see you do this.
Great video, Clint! We're glad to see that she is doing so well. African house snakes are so much fun. They are pleasant and curious without being overactive (just like in this video), and it is really cool to see how incredibly fast an enthusiastic eater wraps 3+ times around its prey. He Jacob, I am a snake-n00b. What is this tap training you mentioned? Is it to signal to the snake you are *not* food? (I am a birdkeeper, training is different.)
@@muurrarium9460 Yep. Just gently tap the snake with a hook every time before taking it out of its enclosure, and it will learn that being tapped means it isn't meal time. Trust me, I learned the hard way that even the friendliest snakes may reflexively hunt a warm hand that suddenly appears in its enclosure, especially when it is used to being fed that way. Many pet snake species are ambush predators, after all.
@@jacobheusser6233 I've never heard of this either, but I'm not 100&% sure about it, if the snake attempts to bite the hook for example and hurt themselves, have you had any incidents training in this way? I have been breeding black house snakes for several years now and they are my favorites. To be honest, I have been waiting for an episode dedicated to the genus Boaedon for a long time. This is particularly good to know, as Reptilinks sells "Anole Juice" for scenting prey items for picky eaters. Might be a good way to coax the appetite of one's snake.
Yes! A snake that isn't a rainbow boa that I can see iridescence on through the camera. Very beautiful. I thought Garrett wasn't selling any of his for awhile? That they were just a "pet project"? Maybe things have changed since he got the first 50 🤣. Oh Ashley's face with that vlog. Love all the names. Elizabeth Swan may be a favorite. I was so excited to see you cover these!
Returning after a couple months of owning a baby house snake to report back! He was sometimes difficult to get eating, and I had success with feeding him in a dark sided deli container, and then with another hunger strike we did have to go to live pinkies. We'll be transferring him back to F/T once he puts on a little size and weight. He is *very much* like handling a teeeeeny tiny SD Retic- sweet, curious, a shy boy but willing to explore a lot when held. So if you want one of these, and they're so worth it- If it's your first snake, get an established eating adult. I am persistent and have some experience with needing to nudge a reptile along, so I find him very worth the work. He lives in a sterilite shoebox with a temp gradient on a thermostat, and binder clips on its edges- He escaped once and I found him in the basement!! He is absolutely a delight though. His sweet nature and beauty make up for a lot. Everything I love in a snake, even if he's giving me a little work. Thank you, Clint and Team!!
I love my Black African House Snake! My girl is named Eden & she's magnificent. Ours are about the same size. Tuna juice gets them to hit, and I am working on FT transition also. They are reptile/amphibian eaters in the wild, so scent can make a difference. Queen of Kings breeds beautiful CB Black African House Snakes. Gem names seem really appropriate... I love mine so much.
did more research and got a baby cb based on this recommendation. Nyx, destroyer of worlds, is the calmest "colubrid" I've ever seen. Thanks so much for the spotlight on them!
I'm so happy you're doing videos about house snakes! These are my favorite species that I keep and I think it's so sad that they are overlooked in the hobby. I hope you get to cover more house snakes species, including some of the cool morphs in cape house snakes!
For South African fans , ultimate exotics (breeders) usually keep really cool olive and butter house snakes in addition to the brown. Gorgeous animals!
That's my snake! ❤ I've never heard of feeding problems with these snakes though and never had issues with mine, very interesting. I would add to your information: These snakes are entirely nocturnal and like to hide, similar to ball pythons, so depending on your individual snake, it might happen that you barely ever see it. Mine likes sit in her favourite hide a lot and sticks her head out to watch me every now and then, but only really comes out maybe once a week.
I love my black african house snake. She measured 110cm on her last shed (definitely a girl!) and is almost 3 years old. Great pets, she's been fed frozen-thawed food all her life and never has any issues, although she's clever enough to know which side of the enclosure her food is usually delivered through and tends to hide below the glass haha so I use tongs as they are aggressive eaters. Great video, I hope these pets become more popular in the future, they're so hassle free, not to mention beautiful!
Greetings from Germany. I just watched the video and really enjoyed it and since I never heard of African House Snakes before I also got to know a new animal. I generally love your videos they are very entertaining and your enthusiasm about all the animals is really great, so keep up the good work Clint. P.S. Thanks to you I might get an ackie monitor this year, I already have a male frilled dragon and a female bearded dragon.
Thanks! I've loved these snakes for over 20 years, and I'm glad to see them get some attention. I asked about them in the comments of another video a couple of months ago. Happy to see them here.
Awwwww that is SOOOO sweet the way she keeps booping your nose and poking your eyes like she wants more attention! And that and OH SO sweet face! SHE OBVIOUSLY Knows and trusts you. 😚
I have received notices of Black African House Snakes. Thank you for featuring this cute snake. I keep mostly kinds of Pythons and Boas. After seeing this presentation and reading favourable comments, I am considering adding an African House Snake to my scaley family.
An African house snake was actually my first ever snake. I had a brown one though. They are so nice and personable, and the iridescence of their scales is gorgeous~
I have an albino KZN red and she is the best eater Ive ever met. They are super voracious and will eat nearly anything. They are also capable of eating larger food for their size than most other snakes. Mine is super freindly and has a great personality. She loves people, especially their faces. She loves to come up to you and boop your nose. I would absolutely recommend this snake. ( They are also really clean, I still can't figure out where my snake poops, I just have to change all of her bedding)
I didn't know snakes could "fire up" like geckos! Can other snakes do this? I want to know! I am all for a video on creatures that change their colors in this manner!
I’ve noticed my boa imperator fires up and down, and hog island boas are fairly well known for it. Don’t know about any others, but I’m sure there are more😊

I love them! My girl is amazing, she's a Togo Stripe African House Snake! They're an amazing starter snake too!!! I'm so happy they're finally getting some recognition. There's plenty of localities and morphs to choose from as well
Clint! Thank you for this video! It inspired me to get one, I finally found one I loved after searching for almost a year. He's been a dream!! He wasn't on frozen thawed but I got him switched over with ease (put it in his hide and walk away). These snakes are so underrated and just gorgeous! Would definitely recommend any of the house snakes, they're also fun to handle... not flighty and also curious.
Thanks so much for all this info! I am in the process of getting my first snake which will be a black african house snake! I can't wait for him to arrive
She is a beauty! Call her "Santana" it means "holy" in Spanish and she reminds me of Santana's music. A fusion of salsa and mambo style percussion was the heart of their sound with that amazing soaring guitar. The way she moves and dances with you is mesmerizing.
I've always been fascinated by snakes, and as I'm watching this I have a foot long black house snake with me. Unfortunately, there are too many superstitions about snakes where I'm from, and I had to hurt this little fella just so people at home can relax. But I've kept him in a box and I want to help him heal before releasing him back outside. Great tips!
I am happy to see a video on this guy. I have had mine for about 2+ years. I also have ball pythons various king and corn snakes. By far the friendliest and easiest to handle. They grip well so its more like they hold you with some support. The whole moving towards your face is a little weird to understand but if you close your eyes and let them they just kinda climb your glasses or to the top of your head which is fun and quirky. Honestly out of the more common pet snake species they strike a nice balance of both fun and easy to handle.
These little fellas can cause a whole headache in sub-Saharan Africa, when often confused with young/juvenille Black Mambas upon first encounter within populated areas... Great little Snake
i recently got an african house snake of my own a couple weeks ago! i was told “melanistic” but after seeing this video i think they might be just the black variety. they’re nearly full grown and i’ve named them Hershey bc they’re a very lovely shade of rich dark brown in the sun. i’ve been working on acclimating them to human handling and they have an excellent feeding response!
YES I've been waiting forever for an African house snake video! As far as names go, I can recommend Andromeda (like the galaxy), which is what we named our female Mexican black kingsnake. The astronomical theme fits a black or dark gray snake very well :)
Not gonna lie when I first started watching I was like who's this guy to scared to hold the reptiles lol but man your awesome!! Love this channel and how you include others!
I know this video is old so many people may not see this, but I wanted to put this out there. My first snake was a black African house snake and she is one of the coolest snakes I own to this day. She's super docile, never strikes, and eats every time.
I picked up my tiny girl two days ago. I've named her Mawu - hoping she will settle in and show interest in food soon. We find brown house snakes often in the garden but leave them in the wild. There is no reason to import wild caught snakes. Ultimate Exotics in South Africa breed and export a wide variety of morphs fyi. I think of them as a gateway snake, many of us grew up with the brown houe snake, and they were a natural first snake to have. Back then we had no heating/lights or any such things and they thrived regardless. Definitely like a miniature python.
About 3 years ago, I bought 2 wild caught Black African House snakes from someone who couldn't get the switched to frozen thawed. I couldn't be happier, they are awesome snakes. I did get them to breed once and got 10 eggs from them. Sold the babies the day I posted them. I haven't tried to breed them a 2nd time, but I may start pairing them back up. You can't ask for better snakes. I plan to get a couple more very soon.
I'm so psyched that Reach Out Reptiles is working with House Snakes. I respect them as breeders but even dwarf retics were a bit big too big for me. African House Snakes were in the running for 1st snake. Once I got a handle on caring for my Rosy Boa and more space... maybe. I prefer the red and green dudes over the black dudes though.
I used to keep pythons and boas but a disability made handling those snakes more dangerous for all involved and so I rehomed them. But I miss snakes so much and have been trying to find a good snake on the smaller side, and a male black house snake might be it.
My first and only snake is an African House Snake! He’s so cute and sweet-he’s an excellent companion. They take up little room in my small space. Males grow to be about ~2-3 ft long. I was in between getting this or a corn snake, and I was won over by the house snake’s size.

The passion in your voice is what drew me to this channel. And of course, the incredible depth of knowledge you dispense.
I keep coming back to watch this again and again.
...I now own a Black African House Snake.
Best vlog ever.
Watching Clint’s smile light up when he’s fascinated with an animal seriously makes my day. :)
my house snake is among my favorite animals in my reptile room, she's a doll and is my go to snake for introducing people to snakes.
I have been interested in the Black African House for a while now. Thank you for the video.
did more research and got a baby cb based on this recommendation.
The color on this snake reminds me of my labradorite stones. Same colors, same fire under lighting - just beautiful!
This was my first snake, they are very easy to care for. Not aggressive at all.
Thanks! I've loved these snakes for over 20 years, and I'm glad to see them get some attention. I asked about them in the comments of another video a couple of months ago. Happy to see them here.
Love watching Clint handle snakes, master at work
"Thank you, Jack."
"You're welcome!"
"Oh not you, we named the house snake 'Jack'."
Yesssss I’ve been waiting for a video on African house snakes! Clint’s videos are usually my starting point for researching a new potential pet!
After seeing this presentation and reading favourable comments, I am considering adding an African House Snake to my scaley family.
these videos never can really be long enough. stinkin rad
Big fan of their brown counterparts. I'm glad to see them in the hobby they're our first friendly snake we meet as kids
In Zimbabwe***
An African house snake was actually my first ever snake. I had a brown one though. They are so nice and personable, and the iridescence of their scales is gorgeous~
Natsu!
From the anime fairy tail he is a fire dragon and his catch phrase is " now I'm all fired up" since they fire up would be so cool
She is so tame. Adorable little noodle.
I didn't know snakes could "fire up" like geckos! Can other snakes do this? I want to know! I am all for a video on creatures that change their colors in this manner!
I’ve noticed my boa imperator fires up and down, and hog island boas are fairly well known for it. Don’t know about any others, but I’m sure there are more😊
Thank you for this! I am recieving 2 housesnakes tomorrow via FedEx! I have done my research, but was excited to find you'd covered them too!!! Great video!!
I cackled at the 50 shades of grey but I love this snake!! It is actually super adorable!
Luna because she reminds me of the night sky🌌
I love them! My girl is amazing, she's a Togo Stripe African House Snake! They're an amazing starter snake too!!! I'm so happy they're finally getting some recognition. There's plenty of localities and morphs to choose from as well
These guys are really cool, I have kept a few Boaedon species over the years. B. capensis are the easiest to keep.
Omg loved the joke at the end 😂 I enjoy watching your videos you do such a great job!
I really enjoy the love and wonder you have for everything you handle!
I have a capensis and just ordered a black house snake. So under-rated!
Great video! I suggest Uhura. :D
Great tips!
Reminds me of a garter or ribbon snake. Too cute.
Ooo I was waiting for this video a long time. Thank you!
Beautiful and (seemingly) very curious buddies.
I have a house snake myself! They’re wonderful :)
Finally I was hoping for this video!
Thank you soooo much!💚
These little fellas can cause a whole headache in sub-Saharan Africa, when often confused with young/juvenille Black Mambas upon first encounter within populated areas...
I want one or these guys sooooo much - I don't even remember where I first heard of them, but I just want one.
Love the house snake! They are so cute and wonderful animals.
I now have 8 African house snakes. Thanks Garrett!
Been waiting a long time for this video
Thank you for doing this video! Been wanting more info on these guys
I’ve been looking for one for a while and just found one today I don’t know if it’s a male or female but I’m so glad I found them!
I know this video is old so many people may not see this, but I wanted to put this out there. My first snake was a black African house snake and she is one of the coolest snakes I own to this day. She's super docile, never strikes, and eats every time.
Dobby. African house snake is basically a house elf without legs right?
Upendo = love (swahili)
She's so sweet
I love the brown african house snakes, in south africa where i live there is a lot of them, they are normally calm if you work slowly.
Well Hi There! Name ideas- Oracle, Raven, Moon Stone, Velvet, Jeannie. Love your videos!!!
Amazing first time snakes! And very underrated pets. And I recommend the name Felicia
hey Clint, new to the channel and I love how educational your content is. I've noticed that you'll also occasionally do videos about aquatics and if you're interested in the topic I'd love to see a video on the lionfish!
I love my little guy, Lucifer!!! Had him for 4.5 years now and I adore his little face. I love that you did them (since I remember putting a suggestion down months ago ;)). Call her Lilith ❤️
my fav is the judgemental shoelace my house doesn't like rodents but are okay with geckos/lizard and I got the vine snake and happy with that snake its cool my fiend loves to watch him move and I got it because of your video
