False Water Cobra, The Best Pet Snake?

  • The false water cobra (Hydrodynastes gigas) is quickly becoming my favorite snake. I can thank Emily from Snake Discovery for starting this obsession. They are beautiful, intelligent, and interesting. They also get HUGE for a colubrid snake. They are somewhat venomous, but what's a little venom between friends (I say that because I have been bitten by this little guy)? So is the venomous false water cobra (note that it is a false cobra, it isn't the water that's false) the best pet snake for you?

Two years ago I didn’t even know the reptile hobby was a thing. Now I have a dream snake, and this is it. All the exotic beauty, intelligence, and hooding abilities of an actual cobra (supposedly) without the life-threatening venom. If I had the experience, space, and money for a falsey I’d be so tempted. But as it stands I have a ball python that’s already enough responsibility and I’ve realized the thought of getting a snake that’ll be twice his size doesn’t sit perfectly with me. I’ll just live vicariously through Clint and Emily! 😅

And those will probably change the more I learn, I have only had my snake for around 3 and a half years (so I am still an amateur but know the basics) , so the more I learn about snakes and different species....I can’t wait until I get fully into it!

I've been waiting for this video since you got him! I got my female hypo around the same time and she's definitely one of my favourite snakes. Can 10/10 reiterate your comment about being food oriented. She thinks literally everything is food, and every time I go past her enclosure she pops her head out from under the substrate (she burrows a lot) and pops her face by the glass whilst wearing a substrate hat to check if I have the food. If you can handle having a little bit of fear/respect for an animal and are happy to be slightly wary whilst handling and always keep an eye on them, a falsie is a great snake. Naga has never tried to bite me but I'll never handle her without at least one eye on her.

That’s awesome you got him from Kyle. I started looking for a FWC back in December and he was recommended by a bunch of people, but had just sold the last two of the previous clutch. So I’m waiting till the eggs he has now hatch and will have one shipped to me in July. One of my top 3 favorite snakes 👌

Most colubrids have an anticoagulant in the spit, even if they’re not venomous. When I’m bitten by kingsnakes it literally feels like a mosquito bite style itch. Don’t have a FWC but maybe it’s something like that? I hope because I want one badly

Loving the new studio in the reptile room, and especially loving shelby there. Never planned on getting any venomous snakes, but you just made me reconsider that hard no XD. Unfortunately, I don't have the money or room for one currently, and I definitely don't have adequate experience yet. I am getting my first pet snake today though, a ball python! (Next step after that, Mexican black king snake)

Normally I wouldn’t say something like this as it’s about a different snake, however the hog nosed snake and it’s venom was mentioned. I had a friend who was bitten by her hognose and had a horrible reaction to it. He hand and arm swelled, her skin died and peeled away, and she was left with some scaring. So it’s worth knowing that different people can have different reactions with venom, and it’s better to just be safe, and be cautious.

    I love this video!
I will mention, I have an albino corn snake - and about 4-5 minutes in the video you mentioned you didn't know of any other snake that might shake its tail against the enclosure when it does not want to be messed with. My boy of 10 years after feeding and if I open the lid too early, he will rattle his tail, mimicking a larger creature, saying that he does NOT want be messed with. I wonder how many others pick this up!
    Thank you~

Gorgeous snake! Once again you have presented both the good and bad of owning a snake in clear and easy to understand information. Well done! (off topic, but on, can you cover rosy boas someday? There is not a lot of good, clear information on them on UA-cam. They are wonderful snakes and worthy of their own little spotlight!)

YESSSS. I was just about to ask for a false water cobra video. Next request would be for you review an Asian water monitor. I know you did it in a comparison. But i think it needs it's own video since it's one of the better large monitors.

Definitely great snakes, once they calm down XD as babies at least in my experience they can be terrors. Glad you got a good one. I was actually bitten by a false water cobra and have to say my experience was much different than yours. The little bugger tagged me between the fingers and the pain the I felt for a couple of days after was quite intense. It was to the point where it hurt to spread my fingers. And as someone with giant pythons that was difficult to avoid. Glad to hear your experience was much more mild than mine was. Love the new reptile room, it looks fantastic and keep up the good work.

Clint! It would be totally rad if you could do a video on Egyptian false cobras! I’ve been trying to learn about them, and while there’s a decent amount written there aren’t many videos on them. Maybe you should do a top 5 false cobra or snakes that mimic!

I was debating on getting a Mexican black kingsnake as my first snake, then I watched your video on mbk's and I was absolutely sold. I love my baby mbk but recently I've been loving watching Shelby. I've had a bearded dragon before, but other than that and my baby kingsnake, that's all the experience I have. Maybe in a few years I'll get a false water cobra. I think this video is a sign. Nice new set too!

Yes! I’ve been waiting for more warm snake videos. I’m interested in the western hognose and the false water cobra. On another note, the only thing I would change about your set is the paludarium’s noise. I would lower the background noise. For the paludarium, I would put something active and colorful that viewers could see climbing around. Also a diurnal animal for the enclosure would work really well. A chameleon might get stressed by you talking to the camera and also from the filter’s sound. Good luck. (:

I discovered Falsies a couple of years ago and, like you, became a bit obsessed. I found Kyle on Facebook and ordered a male Falsie (Giger). Last year I also ordered an unrelated female Falsie (also from Kyle). They're exceptionally intelligent, preternaturally aware, and hands-down the most amazing snake I have owned in over 30 years of keeping. If I could only keep one species, it would be the False Water Cobra!
