2020 MacBook Pro vs 2019, which one should you buy?
Вставка

- The 2020 MacBook Pro is here and it's a very minor update, but it does bring welcome changes such as the new Magic Keyboard and twice the ssd storage in the Cheapest base model configuration. Internally, however, it's actually the same as the 2019 version of the 13 inch MacBook Pro with a butterfly keyboard. While the new model has welcome updates, is it worth it compared to the now less expensive 2019 MacBook Pro? Today we'll compare performance benchmarks, ssd speeds, speaker quality, and microphone quality. Which one should you buy?

BTW this video was edited on the 2020 base model MacBook Pro. 4K is totally doable on this thing
Should I expect a different result from Premiere Pro?
Why didn't you compare the displays?
on apple uk a refurbished 13 macbook pro 2019 is 979 gbp atm mmmmmmmm tempted
@@mraravind1111 it's been said they are the exact same displays, absolutely no difference whatsoever
Hey, just wanted to let you know that there’s some grammar issues in the description. Love your videos!
Now that the 2020 MacBook Pro came out I can get the 2010 MacBook
mycemie ☠️
Omg hahaha, i cant even afford a Macintosh from the 1980s
Ahaha same
how embarrassing
My first laptop will be MacBook Pro 13 2020 im so excited 😆 its coming next week mines come from hongkong and i live in Philippines
Points for noticing the holes in the speaker grill and the tiny differences in the trackpad size. First time I hear this!
right, he's super in depth always!
Glad you take on the lower end MacBooks, so many other channels review and compare the higher end ones when most people are interested in the base models cause they are more affordable.
Affordable is a very loose term when talking about Apple but yeah absolutely, i’ll rather buy a ”base” MacBook and a desktop than a higher-tier MacBook.
This video cleared out all my confusion, thank you for an amazing detailed explanation
Thanks Luke, I thought I was the only one hearing a good difference in sound quality between 2019 and the 2020 version
I decided to buy the 2019, the butterfly keyboard is really good for me, fast writing and less energy to push one button. Don't listen to mainstream just go to the store and compare both before buying. For me the butterfly keyboard is really nice. And you get a four year guarantee if something happens, good deal
The convenience of having this being the first vid on my watch list😌
I own the 2019 baseline and it’s terrific. Low end video and photo editing are fine and outperform expectations.
The 1% speed increase on the 2020 is from the rounded edges on the trackpad
“cOuLd I SuRVIV3 with a butterfly keyboard.....”
Yes... yes you could.
if you have a 2019 MBP, don't even bother upgrading since you're just getting a different keyboard, but if you don't have the 2019 MBP then get the new one
what if i have the 2016
@@therockysafari4302 That depends on what you use ur macbook pro for
Of course it would be better to get the 2020 but ... the 2019 is cheaper and I think I can survive with it I mean it’s a Keyboard.. you just need to use it gently
The Rocky Safari Hello Rocky. I have a 2015 Mac Pro. Quad core I7- Probably Similar to yours. I have done bench mark tests on my old 2015 unit and the results are not even close to the entry level 2020 Mac Book pro. So it will more than likely be a big upgrade in every way if that is what you are looking for.
I wanted to upgrade, the heat problem Is solved on 2020?
Great video. I have the base 2019 13", which i purchased as an open box back in January for about $900. I was considering upgrading to the new model and maxing it out, but decided to just keep the 2019 13" and get the 16" as well. I use the 2019 13" for working on the road, or traveling...the 16" is my main powerhouse at home.
That the speakers sound slightly more bass heavy makes sense actually. The speakers itself might be the same, but the housing itself (the macbook) has changed slightly, so this has an impact on the acoustics. Having slightly larger holes and a bigger chassis can have a huge impact on audio quality. At least, I had this experience with building speakers. Great video Luke, love your content ❤️
So I just bought the 16inch yesterday and what you said in the last minute of the video solidified my purchase. I was considering maybe moving to the 2020 13 inch MBP, but I'll be sticking with this one!
been wondering about all of this. thank you!
Luke I love your videos, your reviews are incredible, and so in depth. Currently commenting via my brand new 2020 MBP that my boyfriend got me today as a gift. Finally after 9 years, I have an upgrade from my late 2011 model. Anyways, thanks for all the great videos. Love the subreddit also.
Just got a 2019 model and love it. It also has the four ports and paid the same as I would've for the 2020 base model
Your review is clean, good, and point
I love you
The details you provide are so good!
Great Video! Very informative. Exactly what i was looking for. Thank you!
I have the 2019 13 inch version since September and have no complaints at all. I don’t know why everyone is hating on the keyboard but I love it. No problems at all. I have 128gb and I am more than impressed. No glitches lagging or any problem while using 10 apps and +25 tabs at the same time. I personally also like the full touchbar with the esc. Buttons on it. would recommend the 2019 even more because of the price. Trust me you won’t see any difference which is worth 250$
Broooo exactly I love the keyboard more than this new keyboards
omg they have rounder corner and one extra roll of speaker holds? man I sold!
Very impressed by your very detailed and professional explanations and comparisons
Your videos are just excellent! Thank you
*_I love to watch the difference between macbook pro_*
_But i don't have any_
🤷♀️ 🤷♀️
faith izebizua I have a 2012 fully upgraded thanks to Luke’s videos. 300$ got it last year does everything I need it to plus some.
You not alone
Same but I have a 2019 Macbook Air
thank you for this clear info , i get it so easily ❤🙏
Thanks for this video! This comparison was extremely useful! I'm debating a similar thing myself with the 2019 MBP vs a 2020 MBA and you've helped a lot with this comparison. Now I just have to wait for a new stock of refurbished MBP to buy (up here in Canada).
so which one did you decide on?
thank you for the detailed review, i guess i will go with the 2020 macbook Pro
So, I’m finally pulling the trigger and upgrading my very tired Mid 2012 MBP which to be honest, I do web design and graphics design and that poor old guy maxed out with 16gb ram and a 500gb SSD has held up extremely well. The display (Pre Retina) is really showing it’s age now so, it’ll go into semi retirement. I decided to spend the extra money for the 2020 mainly because of the keyboard. In stating in the video “if you can live with the butterfly keyboard” you need to consider that it is a gamble. Living with that keyboard could be simply dealing with it’s feel to unexpected periods of time that your keyboard is unusable, possibly even requiring going without the machine to have the entire upper portion of the case replaced. For me that gamble made it worth spending a little extra money to avoid. Awesome comparison video btw, thank you for posting it :)
Great quality videos from you as always!
thanks brother its valid information for comparing
You could actually get a 1% difference in CPU speed from 2 models of the same year and make as well. Every chip is slightly different so 1% is within margin of error for chip-to-chip variance. If you get 10 2019 13", I'm sure some of them will also be ±1% from each other
Nice vid, keep it up!
The sound out of the speakers is massively improved on the 20, and the mics on the 20 sound significantly worse than the 19. Weirdly.
the speakers are not "massively improved" its just tuned differently. theyre the exact same speakers. I EQed my 2019 MBP with "Airfoil" app and it sounds much better.
@@apaulogize Can you describe how did you use the app tysm
Could it be the acoustics if the chassis? Isn't the mic on the body?
what a subtle way to tell you to shut up 🤔
The speakers on the 2020 $1700 are massively improved. They have a wider frequency range and built in woofers. But the $1300 model are the same speakers as 2019 models.
Luke: "certainly no one with a 2019 is gonna upgrade to a 2020"
Me, considering selling my three month old 2019 for a 2020 because Luke made me petrified of my own keyboard: "yeah.... totally" 😬
OMG! I have been looking for this comment because this is me right now. But I'm only considering buying the 2020 because have the esc button and the education discount comes with free airpods.
Love your channel ! Great video :)
Eagerly waiting for next comparison video
Thank you so much, seems like you rather get the 2020 with the upgraded SSD and better keyboard. Even for $1200 vs $1059 you're getting a new keyboard, and a new computer rather than refurbished.
Apple's refurbished is practically new though. There is no noticeable difference other than the price and box. If you blindly compared an Apple refurbished product and its brand new counterpart, there is no way you could tell a difference.
Kingofsea11 plus apple’s warranty for a year
They’re still selling brand new 2019 macbooks
Plus with the student discount you get free airpods
I'm watching this video from my new 2020 base model MacBook Pro, and I should say, it is awesome! I love that machine and I feel like I can go with that beastie boy for at least 5 years.
I just bought a near top of the line MacBook Pro today and I'm using it right now.
I would avoid the butterfly keyboards at all cost. They will get repaired if they fail, but only for a limited amount of time. If the keyboard breaks one day after the repair service expires, that MacBook will turn into a very expensive brick that can't really be fixed. I think that'll also hurt the used market, as we have now about 5 generations of Macbooks that nobody really wants to own because of the risk that the keyboard may most certainly break at some point. We unfortunately have to stick with the up to 2015 models (hopefully those without staingate) until the 2020 models become affordable in a few years.
Here in the UK I've seen people sell a 2019 256GB/8GB model for £1400. For the same price you can get a 2020 model with 256GB SSD and 16GB of RAM.
Could you link me to them?

Man y'all should do a comparison of the 2020 13" and the 2019 16" base model!
Excelent video as always! But let me ask: Why do you think the 2017 macbook pro base model (no touchbar) AND dual-core is still more expensive than the 2019 base model with touch bar and quad-core? (apple's refurbished)
Can you please make a video on " macbook pro 2017 vs 2018 vs 2019 vs 2020"
Very helpful my g.
I just bought the 2019 13 inch model today (bought one a few weeks ago as well but that one had bad battery life so I returned it and bought another one today. This one is way better on battery life). I love it. Best laptop ever. I recommend it to anyone who wants to buy a laptop. They actually only sell the 2019 models in the stores over where I live right now. Won't be getting a new one until this one dies on me or until they come out with one that has something I really want that I can't have on this laptop. Really nice laptop.
i was about to buy the base model 2020 mbp in store and i stopped last moment bcz i just realized that it is so much money to pay on a mac with upgraded keyboard (literally costs 1700$ in Norway), so i might pick up the mbp 2019 base model tomorrow instead for like 1300$. How are u liking the keyboard so far?
@@nazir.el-halabi A lot of people say they don't like the keyboard. I actually don't mind it. It's actually quite nice in my opinion. I got used to it very quick. If you do end up getting the 2019 model, enjoy it. It's really nice.
just got the MBP 19, and I'm digging it! hell could have gotten the 20 but would have to wait one month. this is the best mac replacement, which had air 2016. price was a major factor.
I would like to get one of these new 2020 MacBook Pro 13" models. I could see this replacing my 2015 MacBook Pro for editing on the go. Especially with the i7 and 32GB of RAM. (:
I love your channel man
Love my 2019 512 gig have no issues what so ever so. Never had an issue with the keyboard. It’s worth it
I got used to the Butterfly keyboard to the point where any other keyboard is too archaic.
But honestly, it took me a good 3 months to get used it. But now my typing speed is faster than it has ever been.
I thought the mic on the 2020 sounded more natural where the 2019 was a bit canned like most laptop mics
can u do a macbook pro 13” base 2017 function keys vs macbook pro 13” base 2020? or a «should u update» video?😇😇😇
2:50 pointing out the minor differences like doug demuro haha
Josh Knight I think you mean quirks and features
Just got my 2019 MBP yesterday I upgraded that from 2012 MBP and I’m fucking happy
how does the keyboard feel? thinking about picking up the base model mbp 2019
I'm about to upgrade from my 2011 mbp. I can't wait!
how was the keyboard so far? i will be getting mine in a few days. im excited to use it
@@nazir.el-halabi I have the 2017 model. I had to change the whole top case last week because the keyboard broke. However, the Apple store fix it for free thanks to the global campaign they released for changing butterfly keyboards. Now, my laptop is practically new, because they changed the battery for a brand new as well. I won't lie to you, this keyboard isn't fantastic, but it isn't that bad. If I'm honest, I still prefer the standard keyboard rather than the butterfly one, but if you go for the 2019 model, you just have to get used to it.
Bought the mbp 2019 256 gb varient so far so good.
I just LOVEE the Butterfly Keyboard man.
Hi Luke I am a student and looking for a cheap MacBook for long time use which one do you recommend and where do you think it’s safe to buy Thank you
Hope you can respond :)
I was waiting to purchase my first MacBook but was disappointed in the 2020 specs. So I just purchased a mid 2012 MacBook Pro instead. Hopefully in 2021 Apple will step up their game. Thanks to all your videos. Cheers!!
I do have to say that the 2019 looks better. There’s something about that flat keyboard and longer touchbar that just makes it look sleeker and more complete.
Yep it looks more Advanced and Futuristic than those old style keyboards
Jony Ive loves the way you think, lol. Thank goodness he no longer presides over design at Apple. Hallelujah for a keyboard that WORKS.
Agreed!
u could still get the butterfly keyboard one and use it like a mac mini or just sticks a massive air dust-tight membrane cover on top
Is it a good idea to get a 16in Macbook Pro 2019? I plan on getting it with upgraded specs.
It's great 16'
Interesting video! I just bought a Late 2019 MacBook Pro 13inch with Four Thunderbolts 3 Ports in January of this year... I didn't know they would release a new one this fast, but I get more speed with the processor. (2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5) I would liked the memory to be more than 8GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3. I got the 512GB of storage. I don't mind the keyboard! I have not had any problems with it. I use my laptop mainly for college. I had a 2011 MacBook Pro 13inch, so I'd say this was a good buy!!! I do have AppleCare+ for my new MacBook Pro for 3 years. Your thoughts? I wish you did videos on higher trend models of the 2019 vs 2020.
can you please do a comparison between the base model 2020, and the higher end 2019 model as they're pretty much the same price
It’s 2020 all the way for me. Thanks for helping me make my decision.
You are the best reviewer
Hi Luke, why do you like the 2019 more than the 2020?
Great video Luke! I'm 4 minutes in the video, does the 2020 mbp has 2 fans inside?
Luke, I love your videos! Question, what camera did you film this review with?
At least I don’t feel too bad with my 2019 Pro bought last fall. I needed one at the time and my plan was to sell it and get a new one when they came out. But with the still 8th gen cpu in the equivalent model it really feels like too much money and hassle to switch. And I still have that 4 year keyboard warranty.
by that time Apple may have their own CPU line.
yeah, first I was also kind of sad about it, but I have 4 years of keyboard warranty and by that time I should be able to replace it to a new one 🤷♂️
Took lots of saving but the performance is at least still decent 😂
I'm in the same boat. I bought my 2019 after being used for three months for $950 and I still feel satisfied with my purchase.
Yeah I bought a brand new 2019 for $1000 and I’m very happy with it :)
Arno are you facing any issues related to keyboard?
I've had the MacBook Pro 2019 for about a month and the keyboard is fine. Honestly, I like the butterfly keyboard more than the magic keyboard because it's more clicky and the feedback that you get when you type is very satisfying. And with so many online meetings the better microphone quality is great.
Vladimir Vatrai i’m about tu buy a new macbook pro and I was planning on getting the 2019 one because now its cheaper but why is everyone saying that the keyboard is bad?
DDD Alanis ITS because of the older versions like the 2016 MBP where the keys would suddenly stop working? but I have the 2019 MBP for almost 1 year and still haven’t had any issues. People are just overreacting. With this 2019 MBP keyboard version there is really nothing to be afraid of. If you just google there are significant less people who experience defective keys with the 2019 version. So again there is nothing to be afraid of. The 2019 model works great.
Hey Luke that's a nice explanation but in your honest opinion about the butterfly keyboard how do you feel so far, as I believe you must have been using it since 2015 (from its introduction day)
Thank you I needed to check the size difference for case buying and I almost made the mistake of buying the new one for my 2018
Cool vidéo
Hi Luke! Do you think the difference in speaker performance could be attributed to the new chassis' acoustics?
“Performance on average is 1% faster. But 2020 is 500 MB faster in both read and write tests.” 😄 this is exactly the marketing techniques sales people use to confuse buyers. 🤷♂️ why would you jump from percents to megabytes?
Just speculations but it’s possible that the additional 1mm of depth in the chassis allowed for a tiny bit bigger housing for the speakers, hence the slightly fuller sound. As for the mics, they are below the keyboard so maybe the new keyboard has a membrane or something that slightly muffles them a bit?
Is there any video on the difference between the 16in late 2019 MBP and the 16 2020 MBP. I kinda figure they’re exactly the same but I can’t be too sure
I prefer the sound micro of 2019
I will be using my laptop on a stand connected to dual monitors while working from home using Microsoft remote desktop to connect to a remote pc.
So which is the better purchase for this, 2020 MacBook Air 10th gen i5 quad core or 2020 MacBook Pro 8th i5 gen quad core?
When do you reckon the MacBook 16 inch will get upgraded? I’m considering purchasing a 2019 16 inch mackbook pro
I had and still use an old 2015 15 inch MBP and a 2017 13 inch MBP with the horrible butterfly.
This year I went for this combo: 16 inch MBP + 2020 MacBook Air with 16/512.
Here in Italy the 4 Thunderbolt 13 inch MBP starts from 2229 Euros. At that price point the 16 inch is a no brainer!
That's why for travel and light usage I went for an Air with 16/512.
At home and office I got a 16 inch
7th - last time I was this early going outside was considered safe.
I’m a graphic designer, on a limited budget. I have a 2017 mbp 13 base model (without Touch Bar) does it make sense to upgrade to the base 2020 mbp 13? I run adobe illustrator & photoshop among other apps in the background, Spotify UA-cam/web browser etc.
Why apple, Why?
I really love taper shape of MBA but why didn’t you push heatpipe to Macbook Air 2020?
great video! the thing that impressed the most so far about this video was you noticing the tiny little changes between the 2019 and the 2020 models regarding the speaker holes and the trackpad differences! as a designer I really appreciated your eye for detail because otherwise I would not have noticed at all! things like these make youtubers like you stand out from the crowd. going to watch a few more videos and you may have earned yourself a new subscriber! thank you for the great review!
I’m buying the 1800 on the education website this weekend, thanks for reviewing some features
Nova 29 what color?
As was mentioned, IMO the most important thing about the keyboard is reliability.
Notebook (especially MacBook) is a buy for several years. If there is something reducing the lifetime that can be avoided - better do that.
So I would go for 2020 MBP only because keyboard is slightly more reliable. (and Escape button too 😁)
Is there still a chance for a 14" version or another refresh of this model before christmas? I want to upgrade, but I don't want to rush it.
Hi , actually i wanted to ask you ,which mac should i buy ?,
i need a mac which can help me better in my music production course??
as i'm going to use software like logic pro x and external intruments ??
Weird situation about the microphones quality, I agree with your opinion on this test here, however when I watched Max Tech's video comparison the microphone of the 2020 macbook pro had a better sound than the 2019 model, maybe just a faulty unit??
Compare the 2019 MacBook Pro with the 2020 MacBook Air
I use a 2019 MBP 13 (the 8th gen i5 model but with 16 GB RAM and 250 SSD instead of the original basic model) since September of 2019. Until now, I have never seen ANY problem with the 4th gen butterfly keyboard. I type a lot (I mean: A LOT), and sometimes I have used it even for gaming. No problem at all with the keyboard. However, there was a motherboard failure with it, which was replaced by the local Apple service partner (in April of 2020). They cannot tell me that can be because of the classic thermal issues. Maybe it wasn't, but not sure.
During the Covid-19 period, I cannot compare the new scissors keyboard with the latest 4th gen butterfly. Somehow I am a fan of the very short keytravel, and never explained any problem with the touchbar Esc key.
Are both Macbooks 256 gb ssd? I have heard the ssd with more capacity run faster...
Hi Luke, nice review awsm work. I am a windows user and i am planning to buy MBP 13 base, i don't do graphic works but occasionally photoshop and video editing. But i am a full time web developer, and using multiple virtual servers. will it be good to go for 13 pro base? I am confused and scraed of investing lots of money. Please help.
What about the base 13,3” 2020 MacBook Pro model vs the 2019 16” MacBook Pro? What would you recommend? I would like to buy the 16” over the new one in order to replace my late 2013 pro.
is the macbook pro i9 still good in 2022?
Do you mind doing a comparison video between the higher tier 512gb macbook air and base model 256gb macbook air due to price being really similar
wait can you put the 2019 logic board in the 2020 case
