I hate space grey MacBooks, they started out silver so that's the only color for me. Of course I had a hard time selling my 2016 because it was silver lol
Well, I think that not putting 10th gen Intel CPUs in entry-level MacBook Pro might have been not only marketing but also financial decision. New 13" MacBook Pro using 10th gen Intel CPUs are using versions on the 10nm manufacturing node, instead of 14nm. The 10nm node from Intel was delayed a lot and thus is quite exppensive as the volume is quite small, so putting it into entry-level might have increased their price a bit too much
Apple shouldve remove the baseline 13inch option, connect the heatpipes to the cpu on the air, but kept everything on 8th gen cpus. But keep the price range the same. Cause when you look at it for the baseline 13, the doubled storage and magic keyboard is all youre paying for. And ppl who buy airs arent looking for latest gen cpus. Its a nice bonus, but not the number one priority. When you up the specs on the air it comes right up to the baseline 13’s price. So just add the cooling design from the baseline 13 to the air and its perfect. Apple makes a well cooled product that can do the tasks of average consumers and dabble into higher end tasks of those that lightly video/phot edit. For the ppl that need more specs than the baseline 13, they’ll naturally end up spending the money for the higher tier 13 pro or 16 inch. If youre looking at the baseline pro in general, then you definitely dont need the 10th gen cpu. Again its nice, but not a deal breaker for a cheap mac-which the ppl in this market want. Misfocused goal in my opinion, but apple could care less, they still making money 🤷♂️
Been waiting for you to make a video of the new 13" MacBook Pro. I'm on the fence of waiting for the 14" or getting 2020 13" just for the fact of a more reliable keyboard. Fingers crossed my 13" 2017 butterfly keyboard holds up
It’s for people who mostly want to do light video editing on a budget. That’s it. You can’t realistically game on either machine, so it doesn’t matter if the base MBP would theoretically perform better than an MBA. The base MBP actually performs worse in performance for everything else most users primarily use a MacBook for. I ran my i3 MBA with 15 chrome tabs, 3 Netflix tabs playing simultaneously on an external monitor, and hopped around several basic productivity apps. The thing never even hit 60 degrees with fans under 30%. Never slowed down a bit. Thermals are not an issue at all unless you’re trying to to play games or do video editing. The MBA is built for people who need their machine to perform like a horse on a budget. Super fast and speedy for light loads. The base MBP is for people who need their machine to perform like a mule on a budget. Slower, but steady and capable of doing heavier work loads. The $1,800+ MBP is really just for people who who want it to do both, and aren’t concerned about it being a cost effective boosts in performance. For productivity users, it’s the fastest single core machine you can get, and you’ll never run into multi-core limitations on speed. This machine will hold up for a long time. For video editors/gamers... it’s kinda just a minor upgrade over the base version if you don’t mind compromising optimal performance for the sake of portability compared to the 16 inch version.
I think that the i5, 16GB, 512GB is probably the best model for me. I don't need 4 thunderbolt ports so it's a good buy and as well as that it's a better buy than a similar spec MacBook Air with the similarly clocked i7 by a few dollars.
Realistically, they should just split their MacBook line into two things. One for single-core productivity users, and one for multi-core gamers/video editors. Right now it’s like the $1,800 MBP is actually the premium version of the MBA, and the $1,300 and $1,500 models are just budget versions of the 16inch MBP. They do video editing/gaming better than the air... but the MBA actually performs most tasks better as long as you don’t push the thermals with sustained heavy multi-core loads. It just gets confusing when you have a $1,100 MBA perform most tasks significantly better than the $1,500 MBP. People assume that a more expensive machine will perform better across the board, and end up paying more for a machine that performs worse for the tasks they actually use it for.
The issue I have is that the 10th gen processor is from the same family as the MacBook Air. I haven’t been watching these things closely in recent years but it certainly wasn’t how things were done in the past. The 16-inch model gets the H series and yet here were have the 13-inch getting a Y processor (formerly m5/m7). Admittedly, Intel’s 2020 offerings are a mess. There isn’t an Ice Lake-H series coming. Instead it’s Comet Lake-H which is a refresh of processor architecture first introduced in 2017... and that includes the now basic UHD 630 GPU. So, at least we get something more forward-looking than that. Still I feel like in the good old days, the 13-inch got access to the exact same processors as its bigger siblings. It really differentiates the 16-inch, besides the discrete GPU. So, even if they updated the 16-inch tomorrow to Comet Lake-H and called it 10th gen, it’s kinda fake 10th gen. I wouldn’t be that tempted. Honestly, you’d think Kathleen Kennedy was running Intel too these days.
Would love a comparison between the 2020 MBA's 10th gen chip and the 2020 MBP's 8th gen chip! I know that the Air's is a Y-series, but I wonder if the generation difference is seen through power efficiency or performance!!
Base might be stuck Coffee Lake because Ice Lake 10nm isn't available in the quantities Apple need (low yield), is far more expensive and requires a better cooling solution (it seems that 10nm is being pushed hard to hit the boost clocks). I don't think Apple was short changing us in this case, just doing the best they can with what Intel gives 'em.
Tim Cook: "what should we put on the new MBP?" Engineers: 'idk boss.. What about... We fix the shit we did during last years like Escape button and keyboard?" Tim cook:" sure! Just put these left-overs 8th gen Intel chips in there"
I recently got a Macbook Pro 16" and I noticed, that they smell like new Macbooks from before the Butterfly keyboard times... They really got into the Oldschool Macbook Game again. I like it. :D
it's not a minor upgrade, it's a big upgrade because for the las 4 years I was like "nah, I'm gonna upgrade when they make a model with a better keyboard"
You could also see this move as Apple keeping a more affordable MacBook Pro in the lineup, knowing that some people will always want a MacBook Pro rather than an Air, even if they don’t need the power? I agree its confusing, but if they’d ditched the two lower-end models and the starting price was 1799, they’d get criticised for that too. Are the speakers noticeably-improved over the 2019 model? Seems to be confusion as to whether they’ve changed at all.
There actually is a reason why the cheaper models have the 8th gen processors, it’s because the people who will be buying it won’t be able to tell the performance difference for the extra $100 needed for the 10th gens
Gotta be honest. The only reason I was tilting towards a macbook was because of the upgradeability. I am going to buy a mac shortly after this year. After realizing that modern macbooks have most of its components soldered, I decided to aim for a mid or early 2015 model. If Apple keeps pushing the non-upgradeable macs, I won't be purchasing any of their laptops. It ain't convenient for consumers.
You can get those new Lenovo 5 with 8 cores and 100% sRGB screen for half that. These new Ryzen chips are really ahead of intels (specially in the GPU part) Or just wait a bit for the 14" model that probably coming later this year.
Same here the only reason I don’t have a silver phone is because they were out of stock and I went with a midnight green everything else is silver only thing left space gray is my MacBook
Considering the fact that I am still sporting the early 2015 macbook pro with 128gb of storage, 8gb ram and a dual-core core i5, i think this upgrade is the one I have been looking for.
The butterfly keyboard isn’t great by any means, but after getting used to it I find it very reasonable on my 2019 15” MBP i9. Have written many long papers on it with no issues. If I found a model with the last gen butterfly keyboard and a decent discount I would definitely consider it.
256 storage standard is really nice, I actually got the 2019 base model pro a month ago, with 16 gb or ram, and the 128gb of storage really bothers me😭😭😭😭😭
I definitely think we're going to get more exciting hardware later this year. These new MacBook Pros and the iPad Pro are way too minor to be the only updates for the year.
Okay so it hardly updated from the 2019 version except for the keyboard... but to me (who's laptop is an early 2015 macbook pro) everything is completely different! Speakers? Touchbar!? Huge trackpad!!? More storage!!?? The USB-C charging port!?!?!?! Anything I'd get would essentially be a huge upgrade 😂
I ordered it just because of the keyboard and ergonomics. I wanted to buy a new MacBook Pro for a long time but butterfly keyboard was just horrible. My trustworthy MacBookPro 2014 was just enough for me and the minute I saw 2020 updated model I ordered it. Base specs with 16GB of RAM. I tried to buy Air 2020 but working on it wasn't comfortable enough because my hands are a little too big. Greetings from Poland
I tend to find whether or not something is a worthwhile "upgrade" is dependant on what device you are coming from. If you are coming from a 2019 MacBook Pro why would you be upgrading now anyway? Surely if you are coming from 3 year old hardware or older, a base 2020 MacBook Pro would be a fantastic upgrade.
This is the biggest middle finger to the customers from Apple yet. 8th Gen chips on the base model, 720p Web Cam, garbage thermals, no legacy ports but a massive hike in price.
Almost everybody cursing the new Macbook Pro especially the base model. They expected something miracle like the introduction of 14 inch that perform almost like the 16 inch. If that ever happens, like end of this year or early next year, I bet the base line price of that 14 inch would not be lower than $1800. People are in dillusion to expect a 14 inch price at a current base line 13 inch Pro. The comment section will be full of rage and hatred when the 14 inch came out because of the price. Trust me. Those "potential" 14 inch buyers are acting like they ready to buy the 14 inch anytime. But in truth, their wallet are not ready to spend more than $1800 for that.
The reason why Apple left 8th gen intel processors in the base model MacBook Pros is because their isn’t much of a performance difference between that and the 10th gen ones. So for people who don’t need that performance then you can get those laptops at a cheaper price
I don't know why apple still calls the 13" MacBook pro the specs don't seem pro to me. Quad-core i7 and no dedicated graphics card:/ the 16" deservers to be called pro up to an 8-core I9 and a dedicated graphics card
The base model 10th gen is 2129€ in Germany, that’s ridiculous for a 13“ laptop. Back in 2012 I bought my maxed out 15“ with i7, dedicated GPU and matte display for 2000€. I really want to upgrade, my favorite would be 16“ but that’s 2800€ for the base model
I got the base 2020 MacBook Pro. Its my first MacBook I ever bought and I am happy! I am not so critical on every single detail and tech savvy like that. So to me having a good performing and nice MacBook...im happy. GREAT VIDEO TOO!! Question: I am curious...IF they "updated" this MacBook again (13")...how would that go if I just bought this one? Can it be used to help pay off a new MacBook updated?

I hate space grey MacBooks, they started out silver so that's the only color for me. Of course I had a hard time selling my 2016 because it was silver lol
Do baby carrots smell differently than carrots?
Dominick Bui good question.i think the baby carrots smell less carrot-y
Apparently baby carrots are just normal carrots cut and shaved to be smaller...
They smell like regular carrots, but with a faint undertone of formula and diaper cream.
11:07 - You read my mind, Luke!
Congratulations, you deserve a like.
Well, I think that not putting 10th gen Intel CPUs in entry-level MacBook Pro might have been not only marketing but also financial decision. New 13" MacBook Pro using 10th gen Intel CPUs are using versions on the 10nm manufacturing node, instead of 14nm. The 10nm node from Intel was delayed a lot and thus is quite exppensive as the volume is quite small, so putting it into entry-level might have increased their price a bit too much
They usually only update the base 13” once every 2 years, so we probably won’t see an update in the CPU until June 2021
TechnoLadz no. The Last 2019 MB Pro released summer 2019...
i bought the refurb 2019 base model a month ago and i have no issues with it. glad i didn’t wait around for this.
Fingers crossed my 13" 2017 butterfly keyboard holds up
Armando Aquino My 2017 13in Macbook Pro’s keyboard just started having issues😖
Kristen Malick-Hatta are you going to upgrade or keyboard replacement? If you choose the keyboard replacement let me know the process! 🙏🏼
You know that the model you are referring to comes with four Thunderbolt 3 ports, right?
This is one of the only Mac reviews I have seen showing a silver model. Anyone else noticed
14 Inch MiniLED ARM is planed for next year at WWDC.
Would love a comparison between the 2020 MBA's 10th gen chip and the 2020 MBP's 8th gen chip! I know that the Air's is a Y-series, but I wonder if the generation difference is seen through power efficiency or performance!!
Francesco Osso the MacBook Air is good but it can’t sustain that much power for a long time so over all the MacBook Pro is better
I have a feeling that Apple will eventually discontinue the 2 port model.
Yes and only sell the pricier ones. Maybe with the 14 inch
A whole segment about the smell of the inside of the box is the most important part of the video to me.
Tim Cook: "what should we put on the new MBP?"
Engineers: 'idk boss.. What about... We fix the shit we did during last years like Escape button and keyboard?"
Tim cook:" sure! Just put these left-overs 8th gen Intel chips in there"
*Tim Apple
xue9999 it's both. Tim Cook is his real name though.
Christian C no
Christian C nah man he is ‘Tim Apple’, even President of the United States of America confirmed that, so...
There's a reason why 10th gen is only on the 4 port mbp 13, its PRICE. 10TH gen processors are way expensive sold by intel to apple.
There actually is a reason why the cheaper models have the 8th gen processors, it’s because the people who will be buying it won’t be able to tell the performance difference for the extra $100 needed for the 10th gens
the ram upgrade got cheaper with the base model
Its curious to see that the base model MBP 13 of beginning of 2020 ranks the Half in GeekBech that the base model MB1 and MBP with M1
You are in my head. I’m also done with space grey 🤟
Best buyer guide video I’ve watched for base MacBook pro 2020
Gotta be honest. The only reason I was tilting towards a macbook was because of the upgradeability.
I am going to buy a mac shortly after this year. After realizing that modern macbooks have most of its components soldered, I decided to aim for a mid or early 2015 model. If Apple keeps pushing the non-upgradeable macs, I won't be purchasing any of their laptops. It ain't convenient for consumers.
Nice vid, definitely interesting and I’m looking into some options but prefer the 1800$ model
You can get those new Lenovo 5 with 8 cores and 100% sRGB screen for half that. These new Ryzen chips are really ahead of intels (specially in the GPU part)
Or just wait a bit for the 14" model that probably coming later this year.
Same here the only reason I don’t have a silver phone is because they were out of stock and I went with a midnight green everything else is silver only thing left space gray is my MacBook
You're right about the baby carrot odor......recently, I got a new MacBook Air from Apple, and the box indeed smelled like baby carrots......
I will hold my 16GB 2019 macbook air and wait until 14” macbook pro come out
If you bought the air in the first place, your workload most probably wont need the 14" mbp.
lucky i got the 8 gig ram one. imma wait till they price drop the 2020 MBPs to $799-$999
Wilt You will probably have to wait for 2-3 years. Just get the 2019 13” if you don’t care about the keyboard
The 2019 keyboard is not so bad like the older ones. The 2019 is a better deal
256 storage standard is really nice, I actually got the 2019 base model pro a month ago, with 16 gb or ram, and the 128gb of storage really bothers me😭😭😭😭😭
also Im so early yay
Don’t be sad, the new 2020 one is not a big update just get a external ssd it is better
Greetings from Poland
i agree about the space grey thing that its boring now i LOVE the silver
Thanks for cracking this, most reviewers are only concerned to depict the new keyboard.
This specific model under review is barely a spec bump. The true upgrade is the 10th gen MBP 13.
I don't know why apple still calls the 13" MacBook pro
the specs don't seem pro to me.
Quad-core i7 and no dedicated graphics card:/
the 16" deservers to be called pro
up to an 8-core I9 and a dedicated graphics card
please do a thermal comparison between this and the previous 2019 and 2017 base version if possible
Finally seeing a silver review unit for the 2020 MacBook Pro
The base model 10th gen is 2129€ in Germany, that’s ridiculous for a 13“ laptop. Back in 2012 I bought my maxed out 15“ with i7, dedicated GPU and matte display for 2000€. I really want to upgrade, my favorite would be 16“ but that’s 2800€ for the base model
When you realize...the MacBook air (i5 and i7)has better graphics than the MacBook pro base model 13"...
How much extra do I have to pay for the Baby Carrot edition?
It’s a shame you’re not Uk based I recently downsized my house and the Mac collection was the first to go and I gave over 50 Mac’s away for free. Would have loved to have seen mine in your videos.
Love your vids/channel brother
