That's a very narrow silver lining to COVID-19. Dropping the laugh track (except from the production crew, when the comedy is unavoidable) by forcing the audience out of the studio makes the talk so much more enjoyable for me. I mean, with the exception of comedies of error, like Between Two Ferns and Gordon Keith, was this even a thing before COVID-19?
“He was late a lot, and we talked to him about it, and he was still late. And even into his late 30s he would say it was the traffic, but he left late.” Painfully relatable.
Feel like this is why the hosts always laughing at each other’s jokes regardless of how funny they actually are is an essential part of any comedic pod, basically a laugh-track/audience surrogate

Seth gave him a writing job because his marriage had fallen apart and he relapsed, and then when the stability wasn't enough to help get him back on track, he helped stage the intervention. And I think that’s as amazing as 2 people having a real conversation on Late Night TV
Mulaney wearing that coat he got from the lead singer of The Strokes after hosting SNL is like when a kid doesn't want to take off his Halloween costume. But for real, super wholesome. When are Mulaney and Seth going to start some sort of radio show together? Not podcast, radio show.
i would literally watch them talk in any circumstance. their texts? yes. drunk and making an uber driver uncomfortable? yes. them high and eating a family size bag of cheetos? yes. them whispering during christmas eve mass? you better believe it.
“Do you think about your own funeral?” When your friends start asking you a question like this in a calm way, check on them. Especially when they do talk about their life in the past tense. Better to have an awkward conversation than a miserable eulogy.
As someone who's lost 2 people close to me unexpectedly to suicide deaths, and know many other friends and family who've lost other people in their lives in the same way, it's hard for me to watch this knowing what Seth said in the interview a year later about how he had no idea at the time what John was struggling with. Seth would be so haunted by this conversation and so traumatized knowing John was basically giving him the highest flashing warning sign in the form of speaking about his own life in past tense and discussing his own funeral so much...
Just about perfect. Mulaney's request that people not sugar-coat him at his funeral reminds me of Othello's farewell to the world: "Speak of me as I am." For myself, though, it would be okay to pull a few punches.
After listening to John Mulaney on Seth Meyers's show yesterday (September 8th, 2021) where they talked about John's recent relapse/intervention, there's now clarity on the tone/topic here... like, "Do you think about your own funeral?"

If he ever sees this, John Mulaney will steal this joke, but the guilt will overwhelm him and he'll immediately tell his audience he stole it from a UA-cam comment section.
As John mentioned in this interview, Seth has very high EQ. His emotional intelligence allows him to remain genuinely connected to the people he's conversing with. He doesn't avoid genuine connection, as the vast majority of TV hosts do.
Just a guy mid-relapse asking his friend, "do you think about your own funeral?" Really, really glad that John is getting the help he needs, wishing him all the best and can't wait to see him back out there being hilarious--or whatever it is he needs to get himself in a better place

“Do you think about your own funeral?”
When your friends start asking you a question like this in a calm way, check on them.
This is like the convo you have with your friend at a sleepover at 1:45 AM
Just about perfect. Mulaney's request that people not sugar-coat him at his funeral reminds me of Othello's farewell to the world: "Speak of me as I am." For myself, though, it would be okay to pull a few punches.
