Great tips, thanks. I appreciate the guidance to not overspend in the beginning, until deciding that you really want to move forward with fly fishing.

Just got into fly fishing yesterday for no other reason than to catch new species that I can’t seem to get on bait 😂 (Sonora and desert suckers mainly). Already caught a bass and some gills on a red San Juan, looking forward to some new species!

Nice man! You'll be happy you added fly fishing to the toolbox! If you get a couple bass popper flies or big grasshopper dry flies, you'll have a blast getting smaller bass to smash em on the surface! Tight lines, Porter! 🙂✌️🎣

My fly fishing tip. Never buy a cheap budget combo from a department store with the thought you can upgrade later. Exactly the opposite. You will add years to your learning curve, I did just that. A heavy, noodly rod will create bad habits and you will struggle with it and ultimately hate using it. And cheap lines are difficult to use. I've taught many people since to fly fish. I've always pounded that into them and everyone of them hated using poor quality or heavy swinging rods. You don't need to spend much, the Echo Lift is an excellent entry point. But trust me, invest in a quality line. It will make even a lower quality rod cast so much better. Reels are a different story. You do not need to buy a super expensive reel, but you should consider durability. Apparently I have a hard time with gravity and I've gone down many times. To date, I've never taken a swim, but I've crashed on limestone boulders more often than I like to think about. Beginner reels are usually plastic and have low durability. Metal reels offer more protection, and machined metal even more so. I prefer cast reels that incorporate the reel foot into the frame. My other tip is if your reel has a foot that is screwed on, take the screws out and Loc-Tite them. They will back out on their own and always when your the furthest away from your tools. And my last tip, always carry toilet paper, or at least spare socks in the truck ....

Thanks for all the tips you posted! I appreciate you taking the time to share your perspectives and experience. And the toilet paper tip.... 100% in agreement on that one!! 🙂✌️🎣

:) wonder why there are ZERO people who have fly fished their entire lives, who say "I really need to learn how to spin fish, or troll..." I honestly don't know. I've been FISHING... fly, spin, bait, lure, everything since I was old enough to hold a rod. It's all just FISHING. One method is no more complicated or difficult than the other.

Totally agreed! ...and I think those who just think their way of fishing is the best, are missing out on tools and styles of fishing that will make them even better at fishing! Thanks for watching and dropping a comment... Tight lines, man! 🙂✌️🎣
