Fly Fishing for BIG Brook Trout! (Appalachian Mountains)

  • In this video I went trout fishing in the wilderness for native brook trout! These little fish rarely get over 10 inches but live in some of the most beautiful areas on earth.
    I was able to catch 2 brook trout pushing 12 inches in one small fishing trip, which is pretty incredible. Fly fishing fro theses little fish often results in some frustrating days on the water, especially when you're exploring new areas.
    I hope you enjoyed this trout fishing POV video! Thanks for watching.

    Love the parachute adams and a stimulator combo. And watching you catch that last monster was epic. If you would please compile a video of best brookies you've caught and how. Because your techniques of spoting, casting, landing, presenting for a view, and releases have become beautiful in that you are my favorite of all fishing videos. Your fishing ethics are superb from setting the hook, landing, handling the fish, and releases to retrieving trash and disposing properly, and general respect for the outdoors and what you love to do. You could even make a series of brookies, brownies, rainbows, and cutthroats. You have become one of the finest fishermen out there and would appreciate the chance to cast a few with you sometime. Thank you so much for the kind words! I've been reading comments from you for a long time. Shoot me a message on Instagram or send me an email sometime. I'd be glad to get out and fish with you one day if we ever find ourselves in the same area. Thanks for the support.

    I always start off with a 7.5-foot tapered leader down to 1x. I tie on tippet sections of 2 to 3 feet until I get it down to the size I want. I start with a 3x, then a 5x or 4x, depending on which I want to fish. This will give me about a 10-foot leader with 2 feet of tippet. If I go down to a 6x, it is usually 3x to 5x to 6x. This makes a longer leader, but I believe going down to 6x requires a longer leader. So for a 6x, I will have about 12 feet of leader plus a tippet. I can make it shorter by stepping down more than 2 sizes, but typically, 2 sizes is the max. I learned to do this from old-timers who had to make their own tapered leaders. I actually like how much control it gives me.

    AMAZING video, my friend. That Brookie was a beautiful monster! I just got back from the Appalachian mountains. Only got to fish a river one day for an hour and a half. 16 strikes, 6 hookups and 5 lands later, i was on cloud 9. The largest one i landed was probably 10 to 12 inches. Cant say for sure. Wild browns and rainbows. They're cranking up there right now. Youre right about the water level, it was a tad low, but it allowed me to fish certain spots more easily than i otherwise would have. Again, awesome video man, i cant wait to get back up there.

    Pretty stout. I was always taught to stay out of the slow deep "dead" water and never let your fly line touch the water in these small mountain streams. But then you come along... Hmmm...👍💪

    Definitely keep considering taking a west v trip or multiple trips. The native fishing looks great. There’s a few streams loaded with natives here in south central pa. They don’t get very big though. Biggest I caught in one section was 9.5”. But being not even 10 min from falling springs fly only section can hold some good times. Tight lines bro. Nice video.

    I’m so jealous of the places you get to fish, only trout place within an hour of me is overfished by rednecks with power bait and the trout in it don’t reproduce they are just stocked so I almost never get to actually catch fish.

    Is a 5/6 rod good for trout

    • @frogsnacks
      @frogsnacks Рік тому

      Yes, absolutely. 5 is generally a great middle ground daily driver rod. Perfect rod to start with, you may want different sizes down the road, I'm an ultralight guy sometimes, and a heavy rod guy sometimes too, but a 5 is a perfect place to start and a great rod for doing everything with.

    John, I have a serious proposal for you for next year, Come to Northern Ontario end of may early june, and I will take you Steelhead fishing and Brookie fishing in my secret spots, My brookie Tally so far this year (last 3 weeks) is 2 16"ers 4 15"ers and 3 14"ers, I can promise you monster steelhead and monster brookies from my secret hiding spots 100% chances. I can even take you out for walleye and Northern Pike on the fly. Also we can eat any or every species you want guilt free. I live in a very remote area with very little pressure.
    We can even drive a couple hours away and hit the Nipigon monsters and Superior Coasters, they're like 5-8lbs on average

    • @hardmanfishing
      @hardmanfishing  Рік тому +2

      Yeah I need to make it up there bad. I'll work on setting something up for next year or sometimes soon-ish. Thanks for watching!

      @@hardmanfishing I'll get in touch with you before next spring, I have a house, plenty of food. I have the fish ready and waiting, I have no desire to be on camera so I'll gladly be your camera man and guide. The fishing is great all year but early spring is best because the fish are basically stacked up. But ya this area is an experience of a lifetime especially the Nipigon system. It's gotta be a bucket list thing for a brookie guy like you. I got a house, I got ATVS and canoes, most importantly I know where the big fish are haha. Late may is best time of the year.

    Try a 22in brookie...thats a monster! Nice technique man. I cant see the reason to spending a shit on on fly rods and reels when all it takes is a little patients and technique I use spinning reel ultralight ugly stick ive caught everything u can think of freshwater that is.
