Great video, this helped me tackle the tensioner on my GS300 even with the leaf blower blasting behind you. Id like to add to anyone doing this, it was fairly simple to remove the power steering pump to get that pesky allen head bolt on the lower drivers side. 3 14mm nuts and allowed me to loosen the bolt without fear of stripping.
There might be a chance. Although I haven’t tried it. You would have to get the old bearing out to match it up with a new bearing. However it’s not always the bearing. The spring inside can fatigue over time and not provide provide proper tension on the belt.
Just wanted to add that if you are a bit of a pro and willing to tackle the project, then the bearing in the tensioner pulley is replaceable and a common size. You'll need a vice and some big socket sizes to push out the bearing and push in a new one. This can be done if the auto-tensioner is still working correctly, but the bearing has a noise. I watched a quick pulley bearing guide video and was able to tackle it without needing to purchase a whole new tensioner.
@@HelpingHandAutoRepair well my dad looked at it when I gave it a Rev and the belt slipped towards the engine and rubbed on the metal of the tensioner. I don’t recall it being very stiff when I changed the belt a few months ago. Regardless, it looks like a quick fix, I’m gonna stick some rags in there so the screws don’t fall in the abyss. Probably needs to be done regardless

With this motor, that could likely be a failing timing belt tensioner. You can confirm this by removing the serpentine belt and then starting the engine. DISCLAIMER, please only run the the motor from completely cold when doing this and only let it run for a minute tops. You should know your answer right away.
OEM is best but if you can’t afford one right now. Nothing wrong with fixing the broken one with any parts store part. That’s what is on my buddies GS300. Been on there for about 3 years now without issues. I think his is from Orielly.

@@mikejamieson419 lol, yep you’ll have that. It is possible for the timing belt tensioner to be failing. It would be bad for that to break. There is also an idler pulley in there that could be going bad. It’s honestly very hard for me to know without being there as a noise coming from the front of the motor could be many things.
Well if you are able to take it to the mechanic, let him try and find the noise so you can avoid just throwing parts at it. If you had the timing belt done about 2 years ago, then the kit should have come with a new tensioner and a new idler pulley.

Your tensioner bolt spinning free because the tensioner thread where the bolt bolted into it round up (no more thread)- bad design by enginer using clockwise torquing the screw to release belt tension resultant in overtorque the screw wearing the thread: you need to retap new thread with right size of screw or Buy whole tensioner with pulley which it is a big job. Make sure it’s that and not the harmonic balancer. Those will fail with age and rub on the lower plastic cover as well.

Should replace the tensioner and belt.

Squeaky belt. Bearing noise when the belt is off. Free spin it and listen to what it sounds like. I understand it should turn a bit and be silent.

@richhdollazz when did you have your timing belt done last? Sometimes bad tensioners allow the belt to slap around. On the serpentine or timing belt

If it is old from normal wear, you can just replace it.

Trying to get my nephews car on the road
Is it squealing? How are you determining that it’s slipping?
Does it get to close to the pulley next to it when is bad?
The spring inside could get weak over time. Not common though. They tend to make noise or the bearing goes bad.
@@HelpingHandAutoRepair thank you it’s all fixed now 🙏🏾
Wow compare to how mine looks terrible no wonder my belt kept coming off .. my tensioner does not look black anymore lol
Same motor but the steps are different for an IS300 because the engine bay is tighter, the coolant reservoir is basically touching cover
I do my is300 exactly the same way.
Not the smartest when it comes to cars but don’t you have to do the timing when you take that belt off? Cause I have to replace mine but worried to do the timing my self
No timing belt replacement required. The timing belt is further inside under the timing covers.
Do u have a video of the noise it made?
I don’t. They can make slapping noises or ticking noises mostly.
The belt diagram should be a sticker on the front of the car on a GS
Good to know. Thanks for the video
Do you have to align it?
Align what?
@@HelpingHandAutoRepair the pulley
No. Just install the new one and that’s it
Thanks is cause mine froze so i thought I had to do some else
Would you know how to go about that?
You will probably need to cut the belt off and buy a new belt and tensioner.
Be very careful when you do this because the tensioner will want to spring back up very fast
My tensioner bolt is free spinning so I can’t get the belt off
Not sure how else you will be able to get it off. Aside from cutting the belt.
Go old school and use a crow bar.

The tensioner failed causing noise.
What is the correct torque spec?
15 ft. Lbs.

The belt routing is on the hood.
Not always. Cars get in accidents and don’t have original hoods. Stickers also wear off or get painted over.
