i: The lyrics for this piece are mainly taken from bracteates: golden, circular coins or amulets found in Northern Europe that date from the 4th to 7th centuries CE. They are often fitted with a decorated rim and loop, which indicates that they were meant to be worn and perhaps provide protection, fulfil wishes or for divination. The bracteates feature a very significant iconography influenced by Roman coinage. They were predominantly made from Roman gold, which was given to the North Germanic peoples as peace money. In Anoana, the listener has the chance to delve into a collection of likely encoded spells from the Migration Period and get a touch of magic from the Dark Ages. "Ægir's Gate", describes the eddies that drag ships to the bottom of the sea. Ægir / Ægi has often been described as an old man with a long white beard, and to see him standing still in the water was a bad omen, as he surfaced to drag people and ships to the bottom of the ocean. Ægirs Hjelm is described in the Poetic Edda in a stanza with a shape-shifting dragon, Fafner, whose blood is poisonous. The dragon guards a treasure and, with the help of Ægirs Hjelm's spell, is invincible. In The Galdrabók, the symbol is also described as something "you wear on your forehead, between your eyebrows"). I immediately thought "Vikings" when this opened up. After reading the comments on here, I am satisfied with my initial assumption. Beautiful, mesmerizing, artistic and once again, I've been introduced to something that I plan to dive deeper into. The Vikings intro song "If I had a Heart" - That song lived in my head, rent free, for the duration of the Vikings series. I would wake up with the song in my head. It is satisfying/exciting to watch someone give an analysis/reaction to a song that I've loved for over the years and to see the appreciation and excitement in their eyes is as close to hearing that song for the first time again. It is equally satisfying and exciting to be introduced to new music for the first time, as well. I subscribed to you for both of these reasons. Heilung has actually made a soundtrack. However, not for a movie but for the game Senua's Saga: Hellblade II. So we will probably get an additional Heilung album in the form of a soundtrack. When I saw Heilung for the first time I immediately had to think of Hellblade. The game and the music just fit perfectly.😅
Oh wow. I loved your analysis. I could see your vibes for the music, the historical base, of course the voice, the film. Best analysis of what I have seen till now. Maybe because you are Nordic. And I don't speak finnish but I love listening to you. I could listen to you for hours. ❤
I loved this reaction and your breakdown to it. this band is so very good my journey started a short time ago but I have listened to alot of thier music since finding them it was awesome to see your first time with them thanks for doing this one.
Maria Franz has been around for a decade. Apparently she had to wear antlers to finally get noticed. If you want to see her singing in English check out "The Stage" by one of her other bands, Euzen, at the 2015 Castlefest.
I have to say this. I "maybe" understand every 8th word u are saying in Finnish. I am from a small Village close to the Swiss Border. Now i have to research what Finnish and Alemannisch have in common. Accept of that. Nice reaction. Heilung will get us all. This Tones are buried in our Genes. Oh! Btw. Finnish is extremly sexy!
Thank you for sharing this. I enjoyed it a lot and learned many things from you. I love learning. For instance: I learned my first finnish word: Vaskelainen. It means in english: The most beautiful smile! ☺
Anna, you did it again! At 1:40 you get into the magical beats, so even without snd it's easy to feel the song's pulse. Another nice moment is at 1:30 where you grab your headphones the way the girl grabs her antlers. Cheers from somewhere in Scandinavia! (still on vacation). EDIT: film that comes to mind is "La Guerre Du Feu" a.k.a. "Quest For Fire" 🔥
Anna sweetie, this definitely needs to be a soundtrack for something like Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon or Vikings. Anything in that type of movie would be perfect.
@@annavaskelainen @Bob S Here is a clip where they used Heilung in the Vikings season 6 (the end part of the clip). The song is called Fylgija Ear. Couldn't think of a better match! ua-cam.com/video/RCR77XpObtw/v-deo.html
It rivets through my eyes and soul like the rivers of our existence so very long ago. ... We who are the ancient inhabitants of this earth salute this tribute to our lives . We are the earth and our primal voices call to you !

Great reaction, loved your analysis and take. Another artist you'd like is Eivør. Some of her vocal techniques on "Í Tokuni" you would find interesting. She's from the Faroe Islands. Really a nice person, met her in Boulder a couple of weeks ago
Revelation (Mood Video, 2022) This song was the first completely original song by Diana Ankudinova, she herself wrote the lyrics and composed music. Several dozen reactions (total 133 reactions), all reactionaries are shocked once again, but now not only by Diana's voice, but also by a talent that can create not cheap one-time music, but hits for all time.
I've been deeply attracted to this band since I first heard them a few months ago. You, however, have explained in no small part why. I was pretty much clueless. You also have the most informative, but not stultifyingly technical reactions of any I've heard on any piece of music. You're as much a delight to listen to as Heilung.
You are absolutely right, they have something special going on with their music, it's so beautiful and hypnotic that almost leaves (me at least) the listener in some sort of trance
I apologize that I cannot respond in your mother tongue of Finnish, but I wanted to say that Heilung ("healing") is one of my favorite groups and I greatly appreciate your reaction.
Was really glad on picking Karjankutsuhuuto from this one, awesome track and still building on new album, it requires many determined listenings to get really into. Only less than few months to see Heilung third time this year, that time with Drif -ritual and new songs, dunno how Hel Ice Hall will suite em, but gonna be a good experience nonetheless. Though the group consists the main trio, on live setup they have big bunch of extras as percussion etc players, vocalists and actors.
Thank you Anna for your reaction and little analysis to Heilung. I always love when 'vocal coach Anna' shows how certain sounds/voices are made. Since I listened to this band I'm pretty sure I must have sent you a suggestion or two to give them a listen because it's so mesmerizing and unique what they can produce with mostly human voices and 'primitive' instruments. So much so that when I first heard of this single and its album I decided that together with ordering the CD I should also finally get a decent pairs of BeyerDynamic (which after a month of backlog should be shipped to me next week 😀)
I never heard finnish before, it sounds really pretty. Not what i thought it would sound liek from having seen how they write many times. Always looked complicated to try pronounciate to me.
I would really like to see you break down Maria's technique in In Maidjan because she really expands on the techniques with her solo towards the end of that song, and I would love love loove to know how she is able to sing that segment~
Excellent review Anna of Heilung. You are correct about using this sound in a sound track for a movie or tv show. It has great placement for something ancient or tribal. First thing that came to mind was from the newer series of Game of Thrones or even something closer to you, Bordertown (excellent series BTW) Keep up the great reviews Anna.
Is it me??? Or does this sound come across as primal? It touches my soul. And I love it!!!! Great video to such a moving song. The more I hear the more I like it. Connection!
We need Heilung, Wardruna and Forndom more then ever. Heilung do the Soundtrack to Hellblade 2 Remember, that we all are brothers All people And beasts and trees And stone and wind We all descend from the one great being That was always there Before people lived and named it Before the first seed sprouted
I had the great fortune of seeing Heilung live in Asheville NC the 28th of August. The performance was awesome it was basically one long ritual. The part that goes "anoana anoana tu wa tu" was sung by another female vocalist.
Hello dear Anna : ) You make me discover the great music of Heilung and the incredible voice of Maria Franz. tHank you so much for that , what a discovery then i found another song by her name Ulvetime by songlikr band ,,, This song is so beautiful , incredible and her voice amazing . Hi Mara_S. i share a tid bit to further enhance their image. They use an instrument made of human bone. Crazy i think but it adds to their image, one of a kind for sure. I am gonna take your advice about Asaf Avidan and listen to a song or two.

@@mara_s3879 I'm so glad I intercepted your comment to Anna. Thank you. Have you heard Anna on Spotify?. I've only heard two songs on Instagram and her style is quite remarkable.
I think the soundtrack idea is good, but let’s take it one step further. I’d love to see them collaborate with the “Old Norse community” and make a movie! I’d watch it, at minimum, weekly in the theatre till it was out for purchase, I swear before the Gods.
If you love Heilung, but you'd like to explore a band that is in spirit related but more rooted in folk, you could do a lot worse than trying out Omnia. Their earlier music, culminating in the 2007 "Alive" album, is very obviously pagan folk from a Celtic base. Their later music, such as "I don't speak Human", is more eclectic and mixes in electronic elements and dubs. Both are intriguing.
i feel like its about humanity getting dislocated from nature and instead of living in harmony we grow up to fight it.. the bonfire at the end felt like the corruption in our hearts happening,
Not much of a fan of earlier songs, but I can see how the band is maturing. This is particularly a better video too. At 10 seconds in there is a quick soft sound that I found very interesting and was a nice added detail. The ending was cool. Waiting to see your comments.
This would have been a great song for something like The Revenant or The Northman, or even the classic "Stalker" The herd calling part with delay and echo(?) followed by the dry, small lullaby part These guys for sure know what they're doing This is my favourite song/composition from them followed closely by "In Madjan"
I thought of another couple of songs you could react to in the future. 😁 "You Are Not" by Young Guns and "Ghost" by Saint Asonia. Gustav and Adam (the respective singers) both have amazing voices.
Cool song and great reaction/analysis. This is probably the best Heilung song to date and as Heilung is best experienced live, I cannot wait to see it performed live. The whole album is actually quite great although I think their previous album was better. The previous album didn't have such a bangers like Anoana, but I think it was more even and had more power. With Drif I fell off the track a bit after the first 4 tracks, but I still think it is worth to listen if you have time. As for which movie Heilung's music would fit, I think it would fit any epic fantasy film that is set in primal times. Most of their songs a very theatrical, some you even cannot call songs as they are just storytelling or conversations with some background sounds like wind, animal sounds, just campfire cracking, everyday sounds of an ancient village or epic battle sounds. They can produce very effective and interesting soundscape for sure. If you enjoyed this kind of music, then I might suggest you to listen such a Siberian band as Nytt Land. I think their sound is even more primal sounding than Heilung's. BTW according to Heilung's members Heilung is pronounced as Hailung. Metal Injection did a great video named Proper Band Name Pronunciations By The Artist Themselves and luckily Heilung is the first band (ua-cam.com/video/iqMZBRmskrM/v-deo.html) And if you ever decide to check out Nytt Land, then bear in mind that their name is not pronounced like your Finnish instincts will tell you 😀
It may be a cop out, but the movie this would go best with is one that hasn't been made yet, but hopefully will someday, when I finish writing the book it would be based off of, as I currently have a project that tells the stories of Celtic mythology and its sequel will delve into Norse mythology, so either of them would really take to this song well. I know when I write them this will be one of the songs playing in my head and in my earphones. I have even already taken bits and pieces of the video and gotten very nice ideas from them for other stories as well.
First, please excuse such long comment which might better suit to a „Patreon“ than here, but seems you have none (yet). However, I’d like to express my deep thanks in a regard that - surely not only in my mind - deserves being mentioned. Probably most of us have kind of a „musical comfort zone“ even though we easily cross genre-borders. Some kinds of music do not appear often on the air-waives or may need some special „care and mood“ to actively listen, understand and appreciate than others. This song and recent „Given Up / Chester Bennington“ for example might by allocated into that category. But - again imo - that what’s so incredible with your reactions which just open doors for better understanding, giving appropriate respect and appreciation to artists and their music one might have not discovered or rather ignored otherwise. To me this makes you and your channel equally precious as your so kind attitude, that unique and charming Finnish/English combination, and the genuine empathy expressed in body-language and facial expressions. Or in short what to me is „The Anna Way“. Since I first watched reaction videos this „business“ kind of exploded into a wide quality-range. To me your channel - and community ! - belongs to the top-tier of this huge field. Thank you for broadening my musical horizon and providing so many hours of fun and informational pleasure. Stay well and happy ! P.S. NOT suggestions ! I’m aware that your time is very limited with all you do and you already get loads of requests for reactions. So, only a few songs that - perhaps - might give you a little impression of my personal likings that have meanwhile grown thanks to the „Anna Way“ reactions. Of cause you don’t have to watch ! One re-gained sad actuality recently, one is a young girl paying tribute to her late beloved Grandma, one shows a still going strong artist whom you already had on your channel, one combines a Norwegian „elf“ with a hero of my youth. Besides, in my understanding „Ei kukaan muu“ is one of the deerest examples to express family, love, friendship and caring. Again, I apologize for being to lengthy ! ua-cam.com/video/jhdFe3evXpk/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/GcAOAxQNono/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/-aPARDwf2ug/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/kJ095S0MmnA/v-deo.html

I hope you do more reactions to them in the future, definitely worth it
I hope ppl come over and vote for their songs so I can get into reacting! ❤️
@@annavaskelainen I definitely would recommend you In maidjan live and Norupo
i dont know why but i must cry if i watch this ❤
❤️
You've got to hear their song "Asja" that came out about the same time as this one. It's gorgeous and a bit intense!
Thank you for sharing this. I enjoyed it a lot and learned many things from you. I love learning. For instance: I learned my first finnish word: Vaskelainen. It means in english: The most beautiful smile! ☺
Awwww aren't you a sweetheart!!
"Quest For Fire" 🔥
... ha yes! ... I also noticed the strange visual coincidence at 0130 ... 😊 R (Australia)
Anna sweetie, this definitely needs to be a soundtrack for something like Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon or Vikings. Anything in that type of movie would be perfect.
I've learned from the comments that they used Heilung's music in the Vikings series!
@@annavaskelainen @Bob S Here is a clip where they used Heilung in the Vikings season 6 (the end part of the clip). The song is called Fylgija Ear. Couldn't think of a better match!

It rivets through my eyes and soul like the rivers of our existence so very long ago. ... We who are the ancient inhabitants of this earth salute this tribute to our lives . We are the earth and our primal voices call to you !
Once again, some beautiful words from Ron! 🥰
@@annavaskelainen thank you Anna ! It was a visually and musically heart stopping performance ! This is a group to see live ! I can imagine the feelings and emotions they exude in their performances ! Thank you for enlightening and expanding my musical horizons ! Loved it immensely ! You're the best ! 👍🤗🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️❤️❤️
Music to make you feel homesick for mother nature... I love Heilung.
Great reaction, loved your analysis and take. Another artist you'd like is Eivør. Some of her vocal techniques on "Í Tokuni" you would find interesting. She's from the Faroe Islands. Really a nice person, met her in Boulder a couple of weeks ago
Check out the live performance of Eivor singing Falling Free. ;)
Revelation (Mood Video, 2022)
This song was the first completely original song by Diana Ankudinova, she herself wrote the lyrics and composed music.
Thank you John! ❤️ happy to serve 😊
A celebration of strong women and female power/empowerment
Nice! Good insight and commentary too. Have a comment for algorithms' sake.
❤️
You are absolutely right, they have something special going on with their music, it's so beautiful and hypnotic that almost leaves (me at least) the listener in some sort of trance
Well said there!
😇
Love Heilung and this song. Amazing stuff.
a joy to see your joy in your eyes, watching this....
❤️
I'm glad I'm not the only one that gets the urge to tap on themselves when hearing this band. Just gets me further in tune with the music physically.
I'm happy to know you liked this one! And a big thumbs up for a pair of good quality headphones! Yay!
I never heard finnish before, it sounds really pretty. Not what i thought it would sound liek from having seen how they write many times. Always looked complicated to try pronounciate to me.
Never?! I'm happy you like the sound of it! 😊 It is easy to pronounce I think but the grammar can be a pain in the ass!
Such works help to remember that people are able to create beautiful and good things 👍
Congratulations, on your 30k milestone!! 🏆 I'm sure you'll hit 100k soon! Thanks for sharing with us. 👋😏
Thank you for sharing this musical trip with me brad! ❤️
A very enlightening reaction as usual - thank you very much and have a great week!
Thx! You too, have a great wknd! xx
They even mentioned your name in the chorus. Great reaction as usual!
😂❤️
Thank you!! . :) ,,, perhaps Simon and Garfunkel: 'Scarborough Fair/Canticle', 'Mrs, Robinson', 'The Boxer', or Sound of Silence.'? And!! thank-you
Oooh I hope these suggestions will get more votes!
Since the release, I have been looking forward to this reaction. Thank you for further delving into Heilung. Hope one day you try "Tenet".
Happy to serve!
I'm loving Maria's kulning calls!
there is such a great live version available and all listen the normal video...
A bit late, but I would've loved this song in The 13th Warrior.
Good choice!!
Is it me??? Or does this sound come across as primal? It touches my soul. And I love it!!!! Great video to such a moving song. The more I hear the more I like it. Connection!
Seems like a whole lot of other ppl agree with you on this too!
We need Heilung, Wardruna and Forndom more then ever.
Heilung do the Soundtrack to Hellblade 2
Remember, that we all are brothers
All people
And beasts and trees
And stone and wind
We all descend from the one great being
That was always there
Before people lived and named it
Before the first seed sprouted
I had the great fortune of seeing Heilung live in Asheville NC the 28th of August. The performance was awesome it was basically one long ritual. The part that goes "anoana anoana tu wa tu" was sung by another female vocalist.
Oh!
Amazing both vocally and visually
I find Heilung music emotionally unsettling, but in a good way.
Takes you back some 10 000 years
How about Kate Bush: Wuthering heights? I listened to this LP in local library after school, over and over again ( back in the days...) :)
These guys draw a lot of their inspiration from Hedningarna (The Heathens). For example the song "Täss'on Nainen”. Hedningarna formed back in 1989.
Very interesting song Anna.
Huge fan of Maria's and everything she does is fantastic.
😇
Hello dear Anna : ) You make me discover the great music of Heilung and the incredible voice of Maria Franz. tHank you so much for that , what a discovery then i found another song by her name Ulvetime by songlikr band ,,, This song is so beautiful , incredible and her voice amazing . I'm asking you if you can react on this song and gives the possibility same as you give me to share with everyone one of the best performance i've ever listen ... I enjoy all of your video and smile each time when you speak and by the way to pronounce every word . Thank you !
Вы Красавица!!!
Hiii Anna, first of all thanks for this instructive analysis as always☺️🙏🏼... i didn't know this group but "Anoana" is beauty that reaches the highest of levels...wow this music, these instruments create an ambient that fills your soul with such elegance
Anna, i have a request (like always hahahah😁)...Asaf Avidan! He's a incredible singer-songwritter and multi-instrumentalist. His voice has such an intense and desperate emotional charge, oooooh my...Just thinking about his voice gives me goosebumps... Not to mention the atmosphere he creates around him, is indescribable!! Only you can see it for yourself Anna. He's Genius!!
🎶Have a great week!!!🎶♥️

Hi Mara_S. i share a tid bit to further enhance their image. They use an instrument made of human bone. Crazy i think but it adds to their image, one of a kind for sure. I am gonna take your advice about Asaf Avidan and listen to a song or two.
@@daroldteitzel1649wooooow that's craaaazy!!!! Thanks for sharing that🙌🏼😁
I really hope you enjoy it and let me know what you think 😉
@@mara_s3879 Wow and 2 more wows. After the song in your link i was just staring at the screen taking in all i had just heard and had seen. I mean he screamed into his guitar,,, that's just not normal but brilliant yes. He is an exceptional guitarist and he masters all those electronics incredibly. His voice is most unique and he plays that instrument very well. I'm trying to guess the genre, Wikipedia states Indie but that no genre
And smart you are to recommend this to dear Anna. It is so unique she'll be delighted. Thank you for letting me ramble, i could go on.
@@daroldteitzel1649 Thank you so much for listening🙌🏼 a friend recommended the video to me because until that day, I only listened to this song through Spotify. I was amazed when I saw him😍. I'm glad you liked it😁 Let's hope she sees it😉
@@mara_s3879 I'm so glad I intercepted your comment to Anna.
Great analysis Anna, the song made me missing "Vikings".. Take care!!!
Ohh totally
If you love Heilung, but you'd like to explore a band that is in spirit related but more rooted in folk, you could do a lot worse than trying out Omnia. Their earlier music, culminating in the 2007 "Alive" album, is very obviously pagan folk from a Celtic base. Their later music, such as "I don't speak Human", is more eclectic and mixes in electronic elements and dubs. Both are intriguing.
We’re u a Finland 🇫🇮 princess in your past life 🙏🏻🙏🏻
i feel like its about humanity getting dislocated from nature and instead of living in harmony we grow up to fight it.. the bonfire at the end felt like the corruption in our hearts happening,
Not much of a fan of earlier songs, but I can see how the band is maturing. This is particularly a better video too. At 10 seconds in there is a quick soft sound that I found very interesting and was a nice added detail. The ending was cool. Waiting to see your comments.
This would have been a great song for something like The Revenant or The Northman, or even the classic "Stalker"
The herd calling part with delay and echo(?) followed by the dry, small lullaby part
These guys for sure know what they're doing
This is my favourite song/composition from them followed closely by "In Madjan"
Wonderful spells
Would love to hear it in Dune part 2 !!!!!
Вы милая, будете, Русской красавицей
your language sounds very beautiful
Thank you!

5:25 They actually made music for the game Senua's Saga: Hellblade II which is a second part of game based on Celtic age. And their music is also used in the Vikings series, which fits like nenä to päähän.
